For the past 25 years, Talstar Professional insecticide has been an industry standard, effectively providing long-lasting control over ants, termites, cockroaches and more than 70 other pests with one of the broadest labels of any pest control product on the market. Its active ingredient, bifenthrin, was developed by FMC, and has become the blueprint for other companies trying to replicate the long-lasting power and success of Talstar Professional.

But, you just can’t beat the original.

In addition to its wide range of control and efficacy that have stood the test of time, and allowed it to remain the top choice for many pest management professionals (PMPs), Talstar features a water-based formulation for non-irritating application. It contains no odors or plant-dissolving substances and leaves behind no residues or phytotoxicity. Once it has dried, the only evidence that Talstar has been sprayed at all is its powerful insect control, the company says.

These low-impact applications also make Talstar one of the most flexible products on the market, and it is approved for use in nearly every application. Labeled use sites include both indoors and out, even in commercial settings, industrial buildings and food-handling spaces. With more than two decades of providing PMPs with the ultimate pest control solution, Talstar Professional is a proven choice for a wide-reaching, long-lasting, adaptable insecticide.

As a former technician, I’ve encountered numerous instances of active cockroach infestations within residential settings. Addressing such issues requires a systematic approach.

Identification is the first crucial step in an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Through meticulous monitoring, document both live and dead cockroaches, as well as the presence of fecal matter. This sets a threshold for your action plan, so you can then move on to treatment and prevention.

The most important preventive step in cockroach IPM is cleanliness and sanitation. Remove all food and debris from affected areas of harborage and use a vacuum with HEPA filtration to remove dead cockroaches and their castings. Follow up with a thorough cleaning, using environmentally friendly cleaning solutions. This will reveal otherwise hidden points of entry or moisture sources, which can be repaired or simply filled with caulking. Clean and dry trash cans, and move them away from food sources.

After appropriate treatment, use glue boards to monitor progress during follow-up visits.

Dusts can be excellent tools for cockroach control. Both boric acid and silica dusts, for example, are odorless and non-repellent and will not interfere with baits. Boric acid is the best option in damp areas like commercial kitchens and needs to be ingested to kill.

Self-grooming insects such as cockroaches pick up the dust when walking through it and ingest it when grooming.

Boric acid dust that is super-fine milled will stick to insects. When applied to areas with organic build-up, it effectively turns the gunk into “bait” upon which cockroaches (and small flies) feed and die.

Silica dust kills by contact, causing rapid dehydration and death. It’s an ideal choice for areas that aren’t washed down regularly, such as multi-family and residential accounts.

Both types of dust are mineral-based, so they don’t break down. They are effective until physically removed.

Abamectin is a unique active ingredient, despite being a long-standing tool in pest management. Derived from a soil microorganism (Streptomyces avermitilis), it functions as a broad-spectrum nerve toxin. When formulated into dry flowable bait, it can reduce exposure to non-target insects.

As a dry flowable bait, abamectin can be effective against ants, cockroaches and other crawling insects. The beauty of the formulation is that it allows the product to penetrate deep harborage sites.

Cockroaches have two ways of interacting with abamectin-based dry flowable formulations: they either directly consume the bait, or the fine particles will cling to their bodies as they crawl through a treatment. Later, as they preen themselves, cockroaches will ingest the bait. It’s essential to note that dry flowable baits are not insecticidal dusts, so review the label and apply in accordance with the label instructions.

To set yourself up for success in 2024, you need a plan. On a recent Pest Posse TV live stream — a monthly segment I host with The Pest Posse Co-owner Culley Christensen — guest Casey Lewis, CEO of Rhino Digital Media, discussed a marketing plan spreadsheet he developed specifically for pest control companies.

This spreadsheet serves as a comprehensive blueprint for both the marketing agency and the pest control company, facilitating the clarification of goals, strategies and budget allocation. Through annual discussions about objectives and required resources, the spreadsheet offers a structured approach to collaboration and accountability. It enables the tracking of progress, identification of areas for adjustment, and a focus on business development rather than solely on operational tasks.

Lewis emphasized the significance of setting clear goals for effective planning and execution, as well as the necessity of defining revenue targets with precision and understanding how they translate into actionable steps.

Hitting sales goals

Pest control companies must concentrate on generating new revenue streams and maintain consistency in their sales efforts throughout the year, especially considering seasonal fluctuations in demand. Understanding the average customer value and conversion rates is crucial for achieving sales goals. Lewis underscored the importance of thoroughly assessing all leads, even those outside your immediate service area, to enhance conversion rates and optimize marketing endeavors. Other points we discussed include:

A comprehensive marketing plan and budget are indispensable.

It’s crucial to track sales and marketing efforts accurately to gauge success.

Implementing mechanisms to manage and measure marketing endeavors, rather than relying solely on intuition, is essential.

Monitoring progress

Lewis also brought up several points about the importance of both ongoing training and evaluating sales processes. This is the checks-and-balances process to ensure what you’re implementing is working. He also advised:

A strategic, long-term commitment to marketing is necessary, including budgeting funds for marketing activities.

Try using tools such as Google Locker Studio to monitor leads, sales and return on investment (ROI). Doing so can provide insights into the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns.

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) announced March 8 that a Lincoln County man died of plague after being hospitalized for the disease.

The case is the first human case of bubonic plague in New Mexico since 2021 and the first death since 2020.

Plague is a bacterial disease of rodents and is generally spread to humans through the bites of infected fleas. It can also spread by direct contact with infected animals, including rodents, wildlife and pets. Dogs and cats that are allowed to roam and hunt can bring infected fleas from dead rodents back into the home, putting household members at risk.

NMDOH staff is conducting outreach to area residents. An environmental assessment will also be conducted in the community to look for ongoing risk.

The last human plague case in the state was a Torrance County resident in 2021. In 2020, there were four human plague cases: one in Santa Fe County, two in Torrance County and one fatal case in Rio Arriba County.

Much of the population doesn’t know that the plague involved rodents and fleas, that Hanta involves rodents, and just think about how a few years ago, Zika was the lead story…until Covid.

Thanks in no small part to the efforts of pest prevention professionals and public agencies, much of the population lives in areas that are far from natural reservoirs of organisms that cause serious illnesses, but that doesn’t mean that the hazards don’t exist, it just means the risk of encountering one of these reservoirs is relatively small for most people.

Just because the North American reservoirs are small and isolated, however, doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Neither does it mean that a pest-borne illness isn’t always one series of interactions from becoming a public health crisis.

No, you really shouldn’t deliver that message to your customers, there’s no need for scare tactics. What you should do, however, is be mindful of the hazards. But as professionals, we’re guilty of forgetting, or perhaps minimizing the association between pest activity and disease.

When we perform a service to eliminate a German cockroach infestation, do we recommend clean up and santization services? When rodents or other wildlife pests are involved? Do we always wear the proper PPE, recommend clean up and sanitization? What about flea control services after a rodent infestation? Sanitizing after a rodent service? Gosh I hope so. I guess that brings us right back to the plague, doesn’t it?

There is a background level of plague in the U.S., with an average of seven cases per year. New Mexico, from where this latest case originates, has the highest number of cases, with over 250 cases from 1970 to 2020.

The underlying message is that, although we are fortunate to live where vector borne illnesses are rare, the potential for encountering pathogens exists; we need to be mindful of that while serving the needs of our customers.

WorkWave, a leading provider of software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions that support every stage of a service business’s life cycle, has announced its strategic partnerships with Wisetack*, which offers pay-over-time for home services, and global embedded financing platform YouLend**. The company notes that these partnerships “will complement the already comprehensive financial services offered by WorkWave, giving their customers the ability to offer even more flexible payment options to end customers, while also giving WorkWave customers more flexible financing options that they can use internally, to help their business grow, when capital needs arise.”

Wisetack is a leader in embedded pay-over-time options for in-person services. Through this partnership, WorkWave customers will be able to use Wisetack to offer their end customers flexible, pay-over-time financing options for larger purchases. This offering fits the needs of a budget-conscious buyer who wants or needs the service performed, but cannot afford a sudden large ticket purchase. This also benefits the service provider because it allows them to perform these larger ticket services that would otherwise not be sellable, or would be delayed, fueling their growth.

YouLend is a leading global embedded finance platform. Businesses often need cash quickly to cover unexpected expenses or take advantage of business opportunities. However, they may lack the credit history, collateral or time it takes to qualify for traditional bank lending. WorkWave’s partnership with YouLend will provide its customers quick and easy access to the additional capital buying power they need to make the most of these opportunities, combined with flexible repayment options.

WorkWave initially announced its financial services suite of solutions in April 2022, and has since seen a 40 percent increase in payments volumes since then. In addition to the new capital lending and pay-over-time solutions, the financial services product suite includes credit cards, payment processing and more.

Offers range from 0-35.9% APR based on creditworthiness. No other financing charges or participation fees. Rollins management has called for another strong year of organic growth in 2024, supported by pricing of 3 percent to 4 percent and continued strength in residential recurring revenue.”

When treating cockroaches, the simple addition of an insect growth regulator (IGR) can make a big difference. IGRs break the life cycle of the cockroach. If resistance to adulticides is already in the population, IGRs will add another mode of action to help combat that resistance.

Adult cockroaches that enter a location treated with an IGR can become sterilized, and juveniles that encounter an IGR may not be able to develop properly.

Every infestation starts small, then grows into a serious problem. If a reintroduction happens, stopping that population from reproducing in the first place with an IGR can save you a headache later.

IGRs can be tank-mixed with adulticides as liquid residual applications, or fogged. You also can find baits and aerosols with IGRs included.

The legislative issue at the forefront this year is pesticide preemption, which those in the pest control industry hope will be included in the next Farm Bill, a package of legislation primarily related to agriculture, food and farming. That’s because pesticide preemption would prevent localities from regulating pesticides, and instead ensure agencies with scientific expertise are tasked with evaluating whether a product is safe and effective. Oversight of pest control would be handled jointly by each state’s lead agency and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). If pesticide preemption is included in the next Farm Bill, it would reinforce the exclusive authority of states to regulate the sale, distribution and use of pesticides. Currently, Alaska, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Nevada do not have state-wide pesticide preemption laws.

Premier sponsor for Legislative Day is FMC. Strategic and key partners are Arrow Exterminators, BASF, Corteva Agriscience, Envu, MGK, Syngenta, Rentokil Terminix, Rollins and WorkWave. Sponsors are Control Solutions Inc., Douglas Products, FieldRoutes and Target Specialty Products.

Marcus Richardson

In the early 2000s, I was helping my dad and brothers grow Mid Central Pest Control in Algonquin, Ill. To stay current and fresh, we started experimenting with new products and services.

One of our ideas was bird control service inside billboard signage. We teamed up with a company that invented a bird repellent that could be rolled with a paint brush or sprayed on. We were getting good money for each sign, but we had to teach our techs how to climb 100 feet or more up in the air to do this work.

Because I would never ask my employees to do something I wasn’t willing to do, I was the first person to slap on a harness and climb. It was scarier than asking for ketchup at a Chicago hot dog stand.

I admire entrepreneurs who seek opportunities and think of creative ways to make the nearly impossible happen — and Marcus Richardson tops this list. The former chemist turned pest pro is our latest “Start-Up Stories” participant.

Growing accounts

Richardson started Finally Pest Control, based in Fishers, Ind., in 2017. He has been growing it steadily by focusing on government contracts and municipalities.

Richardson loves commercial accounts, but doesn’t shy away from residential. He has five techs, three part-time office workers, and two subcontractors. Our 2024 goal is for him to finish over $500,000 and increase his recurring residential customer base.
What makes Richardson different is that, immediately after starting his company, he went after government bids. He was fearless, jumping into the fray even though the contracts usually went to much larger companies.

Richardson’s first attempt at landing a government contract was a Veterans Administration hospital; his quote ended up being too high and he didn’t have enough experience. His second attempt was a state-wide bid. He landed the gig, but soon realized his pricing was too low. He hired two people to help him fulfill the contract, and then he went to work on perfecting his sales skills with government bids.

Before too long, Richardson and his team were traveling all over the Hoosier State, servicing state parks, prisons, Departments of Administration, Departments of Transportation, state troopers’ headquarters, technical schools, housing authorities, and more. The more people he met at these facilities, the more his company’s name spread throughout Indiana.

As with anything else, though, there are pluses and minuses involved with government work:

Plus: Being a minority-owned business helps Finally Pest Control land some contracts.

Plus: Municipalities tend to be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. jobs, which is good for work/life balance.

Minus: Government accounts can be less forgiving than residential accounts if something goes wrong.

Minus: Service providers must maintain a certain level of insurance to be able to work on-site at a government account.

Plus and minus: Government agencies can enforce certain requirements on pest control companies. For example, Finally Pest Control became QualityPro-certified because it is required for many government jobs. On the other hand, Richardson can market the extra certification as a selling point for all accounts.

Plus and minus: While government agencies always pay, they can be slow to do so. There are certain times of the year when payments merely trickle in, especially January and July at the end of the fiscal year(s).

Setting goals

Despite Finally Pest Control’s incredible success in commercial accounts and government jobs, Richardson would like to shift toward a more balanced resume. “We are currently 70 percent government/commercial, but I would like to move that down to 60 percent, so all of my eggs aren’t in one basket,” he explains.

That is an area that he and I will work on in 2024. More residential clients and more technicians will help condense his routes. In 2023, his road warrior techs averaged 55,000 miles on each of their vehicles. Tightening the residential routes will greatly reduce his liability and risk with employees on the road.

Richardson notes he gets a lot of support from his Christian faith, his parents, and his wife, Janicia, who has a business management background. One thing she couldn’t advise him on recently, however, was when he inadvertently got locked inside a prison account.

“I was in the middle of my service and a fight broke out,” Richardson recalls. Was he scared? “No, I was in a secure area and the lockdown only lasted for 30 minutes.”

Well, I think I will stick with chasing pigeons and climbing up 100-foot billboards. Richardson can handle the stool pigeons!

Four flavors are available: Vanilla, Apple, Amaretto, and Peanut Butter. They have been specially formulated to meet the behaviorial characteristics of rats while avoiding triggering rats’ neophobic tendencies. They are also attractive to mice, as well. Each 35-gram tube features its own plunger and cap, but can be used in most gel guns — including PelGar’s own Black Bait Gun — for ease of application. The gels are available in boxes of four, either mixed or single flavor. The product made its debut Feb. 28 exclusively at the Pest Management Professional Growth Summit in Orlando, Fla.

Bob Williamson

I decided about 15 years ago to hire someone to mow my lawn. This was after many years of operating under the delusion that mowing my own lawn was good therapy. The cost was $30 per mow for my half-acre home in suburban Philadelphia, Pa. I quickly gave away all my mowing equipment and enjoyed coming home from work to a nicely mowed lawn. My mowing guy held his price for the next 10 years.

That was until five years ago when he increased my price to $40 per mow – a 33 percent price increase! My neighbors were furious and many left for another provider, despite years of reliable, responsive and timely service. Some neighbors, who switched to avoid paying more, were unhappy when their new provider would miss weeks and not respond to their calls or texts.

Expecting the customer to appreciate the past 5 or 10 years of no price increase is both naïve and worse – it is unprofitable. Raising your prices needs to be like eating your vegetables: You may not always enjoy it but you do it routinely to live a happier and healthier life.

Then why do so many companies fail to raise prices every year? The short answer is that raising your price is hard.

Why is the practice of annual price increases (APIs) difficult? Here are five reasons why many companies fall short:

1. Daily beatdowns from customers and staff.

This can be a one-sided emotional assault on front-line staff. While the complaints about price are typically few – they are routine with no support for the holding price. Statistically, about 20 percent of customers complain about price no matter what. You can’t expect the same people to stay the course on routine price increases.

2. Competition that offers a lower price.

Like No. 1 above you will only ever hear about cheaper competition. Your best sales happen because they are confident in the value you provide. Dealing with hard-core price shoppers is a race to the bottom. Sell with execution and convenience.

3. Distractions with staffing issues are all-consuming.

Managers spend so much time and energy with their staff. Avoiding any hard decisions on raising the price is kicking the can down the road with great loss to the business.

4. Saving money elsewhere to maintain net income.

This is a worse logic. To maintain net income, you need to get the money from somewhere. Whether it is vehicles, advertising, or reduced employee benefits, your business will suffer.

5. Not letting the CFO, controller or accountant make the decision.

Using my lawn mowing example above, had my guy raised the price 3 percent every year, he would have received an additional $1,600 over the same period – an 18 percent increase. Plus, I would still be paying about $40 per mow in year 10. Your person in this role would be making an easy decision without all the distractions you are facing.

This is the easiest approach to staying on track. Following the discipline of API will allow you to grow and prosper.

About Liphatech

With U.S. headquarters based in Milwaukee, Wis., Liphatech is a worldwide manufacturer of pest control products. It is considered to be the developer of three of the industry’s active ingredients: chlorophacinone, bromadiolone and difethialone. The company was founded in France in 1946 io develop anticoagulants for the treatment of heart patients. It developed chlorophacinone in the 1960s and branded it as Rozol, a family of products that includes grain and pelleted products for field and structural use, and a tracking powder for use in and around structures. In the 1970s, Liphatech developed bromadiolone, its original second-generation rodenticide active ingredient.

The innovations continued with the opening of its U.S. facility in 1987. Research there and in Europe resulted in the discovery of difethialone during the late 1980s, with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registration as an active ingredient in 1995.

With the combined power of three active ingredients with different modes of action, including two insect growth regulators (IGRs), Advion Trio is designed to deliver more complete control of tough cockroach infestations.

Bell Laboratories’ new, trademarked CAD3ET All-Weather BLOX combines palatability and weatherability to eliminate rodent infestations wherever they are. Containing the active ingredient cholecalciferol, or vitamin D3 , the 20-gram BLOX is designed to be effective against anticoagulant-resistant rats and mice. Its multiple edges appeal to a rodent’s desire to gnaw, and a hole in the center of the BLOX allows technicians to place it on bait securing rods in tamper-resistant bait stations. This new D3 formulation is durable, weatherable, and resists mold and moisture, so it can be used indoors and out.

Senior Vice President of Global Sales Patrick Lynch says CAD3ET shows Bell Labs’ commitment to providing the pest control industry with the widest breadth of rodenticide options.

“CAD3ET is another step toward ensuring Bell has an option to fit the customer’s need for effective rodent control, no matter the regulatory environment or rodent problems a pest management professional might face,” Lynch said.

CAD3ET All-Weather BLOX is available in an 18-pound pail. It is made in the USA.
