Leading With a Servant Heart: Restoring a Hoarder’s Home

Hoarding cleanup is not an easy task, and it is best done by restoration professionals who have the expertise and equipment to perform the job efficiently and safely. By no means was this particular case the worst I have seen in my tenure, but the timeline from the property management company was tight, so we needed to get to work quickly and efficiently,” Ben Doebler writes.

Hiring in a Challenging Market: The Power of Non-Traditional Benefits

Does your mission inspire people to come to work? Does the vision tell people where you want the business to go? Are your core values really the guiding principles that the business uses to manage internal and external relationships? Beyond these, and as an alternative to simply paying significantly higher wages to outbid the competition, elements to consider in creating the differentiation, that uniqueness, are non-traditional benefits.

NPMA plans for in-person Legislative Day 2022

IMAGE: NPMA

National Pest Management Association (NPMA) members will climb Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. on March 13-15 for Legislative Day 2022.

NPMA members will meet with members of Congress advocate for regulatory and legislative issues important to the professional pest management industry.

Every day, Congressional members are bombarded with requests to support or oppose legislation. Individuals, organizations and entire industries are fighting for or against laws impacting their business or personal lives, which can cause issues in the pest management industry to be overlooked.

Legislative Day is a chance for people in the pest management industry to bring attention to changes in existing existing laws and regulations that can possibly have a significant impact on pest management businesses.

It is a chance for lawmakers to know, hear and respond to the concerns brought by the NPMA.

Legislative Day 2022 will take place at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C. For event registration and to reserve a hotel room, visit the NPMA website.

BACK IN PERSON

The groups will meet in person after an online-only version last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year, NPMA members discussed the issues via virtual meetings with their state representatives. The NPMA partnered with software provider Soapbox to create meeting schedules and to provide an easy-to-use platform to coordinate talking points and contact information.

At the first Legislative Day in 1988, a very small group met in Virginia and heard about issues affecting the industry in Washington, D.C., followed by a visit to Capitol Hill to promote the industry, PMP columnist  Greg Baumann wrote in his February “Vantage Point” column.

“Early attendees set the stage for what is now one of the most important and exciting industry events of the year,” Baumann said in his column. “While its main purpose is to bring awareness of the industry to members of Congress, Legislative Day has evolved into an event that has something for everyone.”

AMCA updates best practices IPM manual with Culex information

IMAGE: AMCAThe Sacramento, Calif.-based American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) recently published an update to its Best Practices for Integrated Mosquito Management manual. It now includes new information on managing Culex species and reducing arbovirus transmission.

“A significant part of AMCA’s mission is to provide leadership and education to mosquito control professionals protecting public health,” AMCA President Dr. Mark Breidenbaugh noted in a news release. “I’m very excited about this manual because it is an ever-evolving document, which allows it to continually modernize as our technology progresses — thus, continuing to be relevant and useful to our stakeholders with both established and developing programs across the country.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded the update to help AMCA create publicly available resources dedicated to addressing the growing threat posed by vector-borne disease and train the nation’s vector control workforce.

“CDC is committed to reducing illness and death from vector-borne diseases,” Dr. Roxanne Connelly, Chief Entomologist, CDC’s Division of Vector-Borne Diseases, said in the news release. “This includes ensuring local professionals have the tools they need to implement science-based approaches to mosquito control. Public health requires collaboration at many levels, and we’re happy to partner with AMCA to get this important resource out.”

The AMCA notes that factors such as insecticide resistance, climate change, and expanding urban environments increase the threat posed by mosquitoes and other vectors, such as ticks, to public health.

Culex mosquitoes can spread West Nile virus (WNV) and other arboviruses to people that cause death and disease. Currently, we are seeing a spike in WNV-positive mosquito pools and
human disease cases in several parts of the U.S.,” AMCA Technical Advisor David Brown said in the news release. “The updated manual provides information addressing how to perform surveillance and best manage these mosquitoes, while minimizing the impact on the environment.”

A previous update to the manual focused on yellow fever (Aedes aegypti) and Asian tiger (A. albopictus) mosquitoes, two other species that can threaten public health. With the new information on managing Culex mosquitoes, the manual provides best management practices for controlling most of the disease-causing mosquitoes in the U.S.

The updated, 105-page manual can be viewed and downloaded online as a PDF here.

Schenectady, N.Y.-based Thomas Pest Services was recently named one of the Best Places to Work through the Albany Business Review.

During the transition from 2020 to 2021, Thomas Pest Services embarked on a journey called “Entrepreneurial Operating System” (EOS), which helped the company redefine its goals and shape its vision. EOS helped make it apparent that the company team was becoming even closer and working as a well-oiled machine.

As many companies have during the pandemic, Thomas Pest Services also struggled to attract and obtain new talent. Thomas has demonstrated significant growth since the pandemic started, and they needed more support to deliver product to the customers. The company increased its base hourly wage, redeveloped job descriptions, and really explored additional offerings to include in the total hiring package. These changes, and the collaboration among the leadership team helped them to reach their hiring goals.

2021 New York Pest Expo

With a tongue-in-cheek theme of “(R)Evolution,” Andy Linares, owner of Bug Off Pest Control Center in New York City, was the master of ceremonies for the 18th edition of the New York Pest Expo (NYPE).

The event took place Nov. 12, as it is a NYPE tradition to host it near Veterans Day. It was once again held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Fort Lee (N.J.) – George Washington Bridge. Qualifying attendees received state licensing credits in categories 7A, 7F and 8.

Linares told Pest Management Professional (PMP) he was thrilled to have attendees able to gather again in-person, after the pandemic forced the 2020 edition of the NYPE to morph into a series of small-scale seminars at Bug Off’s headquarters in Manhattan. Still, he noted, “We were able to bring people together in-person even then, because we took safety precautions like limiting attendees, masking and social distancing. I believe we learn better in person, together.”

Planning for the 2022 edition of NYPE already is underway. It is scheduled to take place at the DoubleTree on Nov. 10, Linares said. Learn more about NYPE’s past (and future) online at BugOffPCCenter.com/pest-management-new-york-pest-expo.

IN MEMORIAM: Dr. Edward Osborne Wilson

Dr. Wilson published Tales of the Ant World in 2020, sharing stories about his encounters with ants from his boyhood in Alabama to his research trip to the Brazilian rainforest.

Dr. Wilson published Tales of the Ant World in 2020, sharing stories about his encounters with ants from his boyhood in Alabama to his research trip to the Brazilian rainforest.

American biologist and naturalist Dr. Edward Osborne “E.O.” Wilson died Dec. 26 at the age of 92. Because of his many contributions to the scientific community’s understanding of animals and biodiversity over his long career, he was dubbed “Darwin’s Natural Heir” and, because of his interest in myrmecology in particular, “the Ant Man.”

According to a statement released Dec. 28 by the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation:

Born June 10, 1929 in Birmingham, Alabama, “Ed” grew up in “America’s Amazon,” the Mobile-Tensaw delta, as well as Washington, D.C. At a young age, he cultivated his love for nature among the marshes and bottomland forests of Alabama and in Washington D.C.’s Rock Creek Park. Educated at University of Alabama and later Harvard University, he received his Ph.D. in entomology in 1955 and participated in expeditions to Cuba, Mexico, the South Pacific, Australia, Fiji, Sri Lanka and later, Mozambique. In the 1960s, he partnered with mathematician and ecologist Robert MacArthur in developing the theory of species equilibrium, which led to Wilson and MacArthur’s book The Theory of Island Biogeography, now a standard ecology text and the basis for the scientific principle of “half-earth.” He won his first Pulitzer Prize in 1978 for On Human Nature, which dealt with the role of biology in the evolution of human culture, and a second in general nonfiction in 1990 for The Ants, co-written with Bert Hölldobler. He officially retired in 1996…

Dr. Wilson was Honorary Curator in Entomology and University Research Professor Emeritus at Harvard University, Chairman of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation Board of Advisors, and Chairman of the Half-Earth Council. He is widely recognized as one of the foremost naturalists in both science and literature, as well as a synthesizer in works stretching from pure biology across to the social sciences and humanities. Dr. Wilson was the author of over 30 books and forewords, over 430 scientific papers, and recipient of over a hundred awards including the U.S. National Medal of Science, the Crafoord Prize and the International Prize of Biology of Japan; and in letters, two Pulitzer Prizes in non-fiction, the Nonino and Serono Prizes of Italy and COSMOS Prize of Japan.

In his long career, Dr. Wilson transformed his field of research — the behavior of ants — and applied his scientific perspective and experience to illuminate the human circumstance, including human origins, human nature and human interactions. Dr. Wilson has also been a pioneer in spearheading efforts to preserve and protect the biodiversity of earth.

Dr. Wilson is acknowledged as the creator of two scientific disciplines (island biogeography and sociobiology), three unifying concepts for science and the humanities jointly (biophilia, biodiversity studies, and consilience) and two major advances in global biodiversity conservation (the Encyclopedia of Life and Half-Earth)…

Dr. Wilson’s last lecture, “Ecosystems & the Harmony of Nature,” was presented in conversation with Sir David Attenborough and Sir Tim Smit at Half-Earth Day® 2021 in October. Wilson’s authorized biography, SCIENTIST, E.O. Wilson: A Life in Nature by Richard Rhodes, was published in November…

Dr. Wilson is preceded in death by his wife, Irene K, Wilson. He is survived by his daughter, Catherine I. Cargill, and her husband, John. A tribute to Dr. Wilson’s life is planned for 2022. Memorial details are to be announced.

Industry Happenings

Scarlett Nolen

Scarlett Nolen

As we wrap up 2021, we have much to reflect on. Beyond the pest control industry, we have all navigated vaccination, supply chain challenges, and the Great Resignation causing employment shortages across nearly all industries. Within our industry, some of the largest acquisitions we have seen have rounded out the year. In case you missed it, the buzz is Rollins acquired seven Hulett Environmental locations and Rentokil Initial acquired Terminix with a $6.7 billion evaluation. The industry is dividing into two fragments: large, often publicly traded companies, and small, family-owned companies. Each party has its benefits.

Many pest management professionals (PMPs) are asking what this means for their own careers. For those that are a part of the acquisition, they might be considering how their immediate employment might change. For those in the industry, this could create a great opportunity. As Rentokil expands as a seemingly monopolizing conglomerate, this can open opportunities for the “little guys.”

While large companies often have extensive resources, brand recognition, and financial flexibility, small companies have perhaps undervalued advantages as well. Small companies have the advantages of being nimble and adaptive faster. Most notably, small companies embrace technology. I like to think of Truly Nolen as a “small-big” company. We have the resources, trainers, facilities and department specialists that provide robust support and stability. Concurrently, we also have a small-business, family feel, with open doors at all levels in the company.

I am often asked whether Truly Nolen will join the acquisition club. My quick answer: I will buy, not sell. While I intend to continue to welcome companies that complement my business, like our recent acquisition of Eliminex in Phoenix, Ariz., selling is not on the menu for Truly Nolen. I think selling makes sense for specific fiscal goals or if someone is ready to hang their hat up and does not have a legacy plan. As a third-generation PMP, I am committed to continue being a family-owned company.

I enthusiastically greet a new year for all PMPs. It is the perfect time to gain perspective for all the possibilities to come in 2022. I wish all my colleagues a healthy and successful year.

NPMA addresses vaccine ETS

Photo: Bill Oxford/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Photo: Bill Oxford/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

On Nov. 4, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) released an emergency temporary standard (ETS) on vaccines and testing. On Nov. 12, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a motion that halts enforcement “until further court order.” On Nov. 16, all cases were consolidated in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. On Nov. 17, OSHA halted implementation and enforcement pending litigation. The OSHA rule has not been withdrawn, and if court cases are unsuccessful, the deadlines listed below likely would be updated. Companies should consider how they will comply with the ETS if the stay is lifted (it was not at press time). The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) also released a separate ETS covering those who work at or service healthcare facilities, regardless of company size. This rule has not been stayed. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) staff reviewed the rules and wrote a breakdown of key provisions of both policies.

The following is from the NPMA’s Nov. 5 email to members:

When does the OSHA ETS go into effect? For those choosing the masking option, Dec. 5, 2021. The OSHA ETS goes into effect fully on Jan. 4, 2022.

Whom does the OSHA ETS cover? The rule covers anyone who either holds a federal contract and/or has more than 100 employees. The 100-employee size is per company, not per location.

What are the vaccine requirements for my company? Covered employers must create and enforce a written COVID-19 policy that either requires:

  1. All employees to be fully vaccinated effective Jan. 4, 2022, or
  2. All unvaccinated employees to submit to specific types of weekly testing and wear a mask beginning Dec. 5, 2021.

What does “fully vaccinated” mean? Employees must have received either two doses of Moderna/Pfizer or one dose of Johnson & Johnson at least two weeks prior to the effective date of Jan. 4. Should an individual receive one shot of one vaccine and a second shot of a different vaccine, then the second shot must have been administered 21 days prior to Jan. 4.

What does my company need to report to OSHA? A work-related COVID fatality must be reported to OSHA within eight hours of the employer learning of it. A work-related COVID hospitalization must be reported to OSHA within 24 hours of the employer learning of it.

What if I live in a state that has prohibited a vaccine mandate and/or mask wearing? OSHA standards preempt state rules, except in states that have their own OSHA-approved workplace agencies. Those state agencies (which OSHA monitors) are required to enact a rule that is at least as effective as the OSHA rule, effectively making OSHA rules the law of the land.

Going gangbusters on goals

PHOTO: PETE SCHOPEN

Behold one of Schopen Pest Solutions’ advertising billboards, a goal accomplished in 2021. PHOTO: PETE SCHOPEN

This fall, I attended a Paul Bello Workshop in Clearwater, Fla. I got the chance to hang out with pest pros like Seth Garber (Pest Daily), Alan Feuer (Preventive Pest Control) and David Poplin (Legion Pest Management). It was a great meeting, with dozens of successful people from all over the country. I always learn a lot at such events, and attending them motivates me to complete some projects underway at Schopen Pest Solutions.

One topic Paul brought up was “goals.” Many people talk about goals, but fail to see them through to the end. I never quit on my goals, but I do get sidetracked with other projects. I always preach to my employees about setting one-, three- and five-year goals because it is easier and more fun to work at a place that establishes benchmarks for success.

For example, our call center people need to try for 40-plus phone calls per day. Our in-house salespeople need to get to $2,000 per day. Our customer service advocates (CSAs) need to help our techs reach $1,200 in daily production. Our techs strive to earn their Illinois and Wisconsin certificates.

Pete Schopen

Pete Schopen, owner
and founder, Schopen Pest Solution

I have set many goals over the years. My first goal was to hit 25 percent yearly growth, which we’ve accomplished. My second goal was $8 million in revenue by my 20th year in business; we are ahead of that goal and should hit $8.1 million in our 19th year. We also successfully purchased a building; are able to offer health insurance to employees; and created a paid holidays policy.

But there have been failed goals, too. Those include not having a commercial sales team in place yet, not having a Wisconsin office up and running, and not having guaranteed days off for my techs.

To close out 2021, I revisited my end-of-year columns for 2019 and 2020 to see what my goals were each year, and compared them to our upcoming 2022 goals. Here we go:

2019 goals for 2020

  • Crack $2.5 million: Yes.
  • Promote a technician to branch manager: Yes.
  • Promote an employee to quality control director: Yes.
  • Replace our roof: Yes, to the tune of $125,000.
  • Create a better and more professional training manual: Kind of. We completed one I like, but it is a work in progress.
  • Open a Wisconsin office: No.
  • Watch my son graduate from The College of Wooster in Ohio: No, the pandemic crushed that dream — although he did graduate with two degrees.

2020 goals for 2021

  • Break $3.2 million: It’s looking good as I type this, although the final stats will be out next month.
  • Stay healthy: So far, so good.
  • Open a Wisconsin office: Denied again.
  • Create a sales team: Kind of. We have a great inside sales team and a wonderful call center started, but we are still missing a commercial sales team.
  • Split my corporate office from my McHenry branch: Almost. On Nov. 29, I closed on a new building to house my corporate team. Unfortunately, we are not moved in yet.
  • Create a working budget: Yes.
  • Create key performance indicators (KPIs) for office staff: Yes. Branch Manager Chris Baumann and I have stats in place for our CSAs and salespeople.
  • Purchase outdoor billboard advertising: Yes.
  • Celebrate our 15-year anniversary: Yes. It has been fun promoting the milestone, interviewing our clients, creating cool swag for my staff and family, and posting a timeline in the office.

2022 goals

  • Open a Wisconsin office: I seriously want to make this happen.
  • Create a sales team: See above.
  • Hit $4 million in revenue.
  • Hire a full-time HR person.
  • Promote three of our techs to team leaders (supervisors).
  • Begin management training for qualified CSAs, techs and supervisors.

Happy holidays and Happy New Year to all of my pest control friends and families. Every year, I mention a few people, so “Ho-Ho-Ho” to Heather Gooch, Diane Sofranec, Marty Whitford, Josh Alpert, Pete La Quaglia, Alan Feuer, Marty Jones and family, Paul and Mary Ann Bello, Fred Willey, Joel Miller and family, the Chitwoods, Bill and Angie Richter, Marlin Voss, Jeff Caudill, David Guyon, Paul Alley, Joe Goodell, the Thorntons, Bill Dyra, my awesome staff, my lovely Queen Tami and my two incredibly successful sons, Caleb and Trey. You are all God’s blessings to me, and I appreciate each and every one of you.

Anticoagulant Rodenticide Task Force

The Anticoagulant Rodenticide Task Force (ARTF) held its first combined virtual/in-person meeting at PestWorld 2021, after months of virtual meetings. Its goal is to support the registrations of anticoagulant rodenticides through joint advocacy, research and education.

“During our PestWorld meeting, we worked on our stewardship program for rodenticides: an in-depth educational video in modules, with best practices for applicators to follow that focus on minimizing risk to nontarget animals,” says Katie Swift, ARTF chair and senior manager of governmental affairs for Milwaukee, Wis.-based Liphatech.

Nine companies are members:

  • Bell Laboratories
  • Central Garden & Pet Co. (parent company of Zoëcon)
  • Liphatech
  • Neogen
  • PelGar International
  • Scimetrics
  • Unichem
  • VM Products
  • Wilco Distributors

Several industry experts are collaborating with the group, including consultant Chelle Hartzer, BCE, PCQI, 360 Pest and Food Safety Consulting; Dr. Claudia Riegel, a director of the City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite, and Rodent Control Board; Dr. Niamh Quinn, of the University of California Cooperative Extension, South Coast Research and Extension Center; and Pest Management Professional (PMP) Hall of Famer (Class of 2008) and rodentologist Dr. Bobby Corrigan.

“This stewardship program is particularly important to the EPA and the California Department of Pesticide Regulation for maintaining the uses of rodenticides, and the agencies will be providing feedback on the content,” Swift tells PMP. “Obtaining their final approval for the program and coordinating its distribution to applicators is one of the Task Force’s top priorities for 2022.”

Black Ownership Matters

Black Ownership Matters (BOM), an organization founded in 2020, hosted two events at PestWorld 2021 on Nov. 4: an inaugural reception with the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and an After-Hours Mixer. BOM was created to help promote Black ownership of pest control companies and advancement in the industry by providing financial guidance, business resources, employee development, mentorship and community support.

Executive Director Ashley Clark said BOM was proud to offer — in partnership with the NPMA — four black-owned business owners complimentary full registration packages to PestWorld.

Pi Chi Omega

Pi Chi Omega, the pest control industry’s fraternity, held its semi-annual membership meeting at PestWorld on Nov. 2.

In 2021, 14 new members joined the 415-member-strong organization. Members include entomologists, pest management professionals, manufacturers, consultants, researchers, professors, students, and others dedicated to the technical side of structural pest control.
New this year is a Junior Entomologist Program promoted at Pi Chi Omega’s PestWorld booth. It was created by entomologists and can be used by anyone who would like to share the organization’s passion for entomology. Visit PiChiOmega.org for details on how to use the program presentations, complete with speaker notes.

In other news, three awards were presented:

  • Dr. Austin Frishman, PMP Hall of Famer (Class of 2002), received the Award of Achievement.
  • John Adams, Adams Pest Control, received the Generosity Award for expanding scholarships to more students. He donated $50,000 for a perpetual scholarship in honor of the late industry advocate Norm Ehmann, a member of the PMP Hall of Fame (Class of 1999).
  • The authors and contributors of the book The Biology and Management of the German Cockroach who are Pi Chi Omega members received the Publications of Professional Services Award. They included all three of the authors — Drs. Michael Rust (PMP Hall of Fame Class of 2007), Chow-Yang Lee and Changlu Wang — and eight of the 11 contributors, including PMP Hall of Fame Class of 2019 members Judy Black, BCE, and Dr. Dini Miller; as well as Drs. Coby Schal, Mike Scharf and Ed Vargo.

Pi Chi Omega also held its informal Raise the Bar get-together on Nov. 4. “It always gives us a chance to introduce prospective members to our fraternity and encourage them to join,” said Executive Director Andrea Coron. “We picked up about 20 new-member nominations during PestWorld.”

5 questions with Carmine Marchionda

Carmine Marchionda

Carmine Marchionda

Horizon Pest Control was founded in 1970 by Bernard Holst Jr. This fall, the company took the unprecedented step of installing a president outside the Holst family — and the pest control industry. Having Certified Public Manager Carmine Marchionda at the helm leaves CEO Bernie Holst III free to focus on growth initiatives for the Midland Park, N.J.-based firm. We caught up with Marchionda to see how the company plans to continue on its path to success.

1. What attracted you to Horizon Pest Control, and the structural pest management industry overall?

I have devoted the past 30-plus years serving as an executive of healthcare, government and nonprofit human service organizations. I met Bernie through Vistage, an international executive and peer coaching group. I was immediately impressed with Horizon’s business model, strong family culture and his vision for the company’s future. The alignment of my professional, family and business values with those of Horizon and the Holst family made the decision to join their team an easy one.

2. Horizon has reported an 8 percent to 10 percent growth rate since 2017, and has a goal of more than doubling revenue by 2026. What are its plans for achieving that?

We are focused on continuing strong relationships with customers and where appropriate, expanding our market reach and our service offerings. Internally, we continue to look at ways in which we can develop and empower our staff so they can better support clients and teammates. We also focus on creating a scalable infrastructure — ensuring our “family feel” and company values stay intact, no matter what. We believe our company culture is a big key to our success, and is why we have been voted one of the “Top Workplaces in New Jersey” by our staff two years in a row, as tallied by NJ.com.

3. Horizon did not experience significant staff attrition during the pandemic. What contributed to this?

While some employees left for personal reasons during the peak of COVID-19, we did not downsize our team in any way. It has been a challenge at times; however, it always has been our intention to stay fully staffed and keep everyone gainfully employed. We attribute this to employees and candidates recognizing that we invest in our people. And the stats speak for themselves: Nearly 80 percent of our senior leadership started out as front-line employees. Our average employee tenure is seven years, and 17 employees have been with us for 20 years or more.

4. When you say “invest in our people” — would you please give us examples?

In addition to extensive initial and ongoing training, we track several key performance indicators (KPIs) in all three departments: sales, production and client care. At the end of the year, top performers are recognized and rewarded. A few of the KPIs we measure include route values, total sales dollars for the year, and most phone calls taken in the office. The rewards vary based on categories, and include $300 gift cards, big-screen TVs, GoPro cameras, Apple Watches, sound bars, tablets and more. These are awarded at an annual event, where the entire team is brought together. We eat, hang out, share some of the goals and objectives for the upcoming season, and let the team know how much they are appreciated. We also have held monthly contests, which typically are broken out by department.

5. In addition to valuing employees, why is it important to partner with the community?

I know firsthand the value and importance of community partnerships, collaborations and the support of local businesses in strengthening mission-based services. We will continue to be an active part of the communities we serve, and give back with our time and financial support when we can. The people who know us well trust us, and we want to continue to actively reach out to build that trust with the folks who are new to our brand. This is not an effort limited to upper management, either; our goal is to involve our entire team in helping our communities, identifying new team members with the same passions, and being on the lookout for potential business partners with the same mindset.
