Mold and Mildew in the Home
Mold and mildew do not only represent a big esthetic issue. They can also be very troublesome for your health. That being said, we need to be serious when dealing with this issue.
In fact, mold is one of the most common instigators of respiratory diseases ranging from common cough to bronchitis and asthma. On top of that, mold is one of the top 3 allergens.
Luckily, there are a few solutions. Here are 6 good (and cheap) ways to get rid of mold.
Let’s check them out!
Vinegar
Believe it or not, vinegar is one of the best ways to eliminate mold. On top of that, you can easily apply it. Put vinegar in a spray water bottle and sprinkle it on mold. Leave it for a couple of hours. Given that vinegar has rather strong smell, you can also add a couple of drops of essential oil. I would recommend lemon given that it has similar acidity and is strong enough to mask the small of vinegar. At the same time, lemon is mild enough so that it doesn’t have a negative impact on people with respiratory problems.
Hydrogen peroxide
You will need 3% hydrogen peroxide and a plastic sprinkling bottle. Again, you need to put hydrogen in a bottle and start applying on critical spots. Make sure to leave it for an hour or two and then, you can simply wipe it off.
Baking soda
Baking soda is another product which has various home uses. Given that it is a great substance for cleaning, you can also use it against mold too. It provides best results when mixed with vinegar or water. I would recommend mixing it with vinegar in order to get the double effect.
Grapefruit seeds
Only a few people actually use grapefruit seeds. But, it turns out that this method is as strong (or even stronger) than vinegar and baking soda. Fill up a sprinkler with water. After that, add 20 drops of grapefruit extract. Shake the bottle to mix everything up. Liquid should be sprinkled all over mold. Unlike vinegar, there is no need to wipe it off later on.
Borax
Borax is a natural cleaner and a great solution for mold. In most cases, homeowners use it as an insecticide. First of all, you should vacuum the mold from the wall. After that, apply borax on a brush and start scrubbing. Make sure not to spread mold even further. When using a brush, there is a threat that mold spores will spread around increasing the initial area. So, use inward strokes. When you finish scrubbing, wipe the borax and leave it to dry.
Ammonia
Although a very good way to remove mold, ammonia can be quite volatile. Do not mix ammonia with bleach and make sure to use clear ammonia instead of cloudy one. Put it in a spray bottle, apply on mold and then, scrub the area. Ammonia should be left for a couple of hours. Open the windows so that the air clears because it has quite a strong odor.
Most of these products are easy to get. In fact, you probably have baking soda and vinegar in your house.
There is no need to buy fancy products as you have a simple and cheap solution nearby.
