Industry up 17.4 percent in May 2022, per Blair/PCO M&A Specialists index

LOGO: PCO M&A SPECIALISTS

The William Blair/PCO M&A Specialists Pest Index is a proprietary index of the monthly sales for 140 different U.S. pest control companies across 30 states. For May 2022, the total U.S. pest index increased 17.4 percent year-over-year.

Per a news release, this is showing a strong acceleration from the slowdown in April. On a sequential basis, the index increased 2.8 percent from April. This index includes recurring and nonrecurring revenue for residential pest, commercial pest and termite. It does not include residential door-to-door companies.

“We believe the slowdown in April was primarily due to a slow start to the spring season (i.e., colder weather),” William Blair Equity Researcher Tim Mulrooney said in the news release. “However, based on recent conversations with pest control operators, the warmer weather picked up in early May, which likely contributed to strong lead generation as the month progressed. In addition, we suspect more aggressive price increases over the last several months also contributed to the stronger result in May.”

PCO M&A Specialists Managing Member Dan Gordon, CPA, noted in the news release, “If the aggressive price increases we see are taken out of the equation, we are still seeing good industry growth as we see the overall economy slow.”Gordon is also is also Pest Management Professional magazine’s financial columnist.

The Residential Pest Index increased 18 percent year-over-year and 4 percent on a sequential basis. The Commercial Pest Index increased 20 percent year-over-year and 2 percent on a sequential basis. The Wood Destroying (Termite) Index increased 12 percent year-over-year and 1 percent on a sequential basis. The Bed Bug Index increased 20 percent year-over-year and 8 percent on a sequential basis.

Mentorship can be a key difference maker in your career path

Scarlett Nolen

Scarlett Nolen

The foundation of career pathing is having a mentor — or, more specifically, mentors. The importance of mentorship can be a key difference between success and failure. So many of the greats had mentors — Mark Zuckerberg had Steve Jobs, Oprah and Maya Angelou, Plato and Socrates, The Karate Kid and Mr. Miyagi — the list goes on! Mentors come in different forms and can service different purposes. Anthony Tjan, author of Good People: The Only Leadership Decision That Really Matters, describes five distinct types of mentors:

1. The Master of Craft, as the name implies, is depicted as the guru, the sensei, the Yoda, if you will. We can all identify these people early in our careers. Often they are our boss’s boss’s boss — or perhaps an ACE in the pest control industry. For me, this person was my father, Truly David Nolen, who was brilliant beyond measure. Although as wise as he was, and as much knowledge as he acquired throughout his life, he never stopped learning, which made him a master mentor.

2. The Champion of Your Cause is your hype person. This mentor will talk you up to others and connect you with great resources, but also will give it to you straight. Chris Maher, VP of Commercial Operations, and a Truly Nolen partner for the past 40 years, is my champion mentor.

3. The Co-Pilot is the mentor that you can bounce any idea off of or share your thoughts with on a particular project. This mentor is someone you stick around with after the Zoom call is over and share your unfiltered thoughts. I have quite a few Co-Pilots, but Lance Washington, director of franchising and acquisitions, is one worth noting. Washington is a great mentor because he often has an alternative perspective. I think it is wildly valuable to surround yourself with people that can challenge you to grow.

4. The Anchor Mentor is often someone outside of your workspace that grounds you. They are a sounding board beyond specific career goals. This person might be a pastor, rabbi, spouse, coach or family member. I found mine, Bill Dillard, in a leadership group for CEOs called Vistage. He is just as much as a Master Mentor as he is an Anchor Mentor. Dillard often reminds me of my father, in that he has really lived a full life with many great business triumphs, but he always comes back to the core of what is important and how to truly “win” at the game of life.

5. Lastly, the Reverse Mentor is the one that often goes unnoticed. This type of mentor often comes from a younger generation than yourself. In fact, this may even be someone who you are mentoring, and it is up to you to learn from them. Emily Cruz is that person for me. Emily and I have very different backgrounds, but I have found we have so much in common through our industry. She started her pest control career answering phones, then ran our El Paso branch and is now overseeing four locations in Texas and New Mexico. She is someone that is absolutely a force and teaches me to push myself outside my comfort zone. She is a great Reverse Mentor because she is not shy to share her fresh perspective, which is critical to our success as a company.

To grow in the pest control industry, or any facet of life, you should surround yourself with many mentors — one will likely not suffice. As illustrated above, mentors come in different forms and you need to diversify your mentorship board to seek your full potential. If you find yourself in a room full of people that you are done learning from, it is time to change rooms.

Orkin hosted two blood drives in Los Angeles, Calif., and Atlanta, Ga., which aligned with its annual Top 50 Mosquito Cities List.

Orkin’s Top 50 Mosquito Cities list ranks metro areas by the number of mosquito customers served from April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022. The list includes both residential and commercial mosquito treatments.

Los Angeles landed the No. 1 spot this year with Atlanta at No. 5.

Between both blood drives, Orkin collected 59 units of blood, which will directly impact the lives of up to 177 patients as they battle cancer, receive a transfusion for a blood disorder or undergo surgery.

  • Los Angeles (Tuesday, June 7): 32 units donated; eight first-time donors
  • Atlanta (Wednesday, June 22): 27 units donated; 11 first-time donors

In addition to blood donation, Orkin is donating $150,000 to the Red Cross this year.

As part of the annual Mosquitoes Don’t Deserve a Drop campaign, Orkin’s SleevesUp program is also inviting the public to pledge to donate blood to the Red Cross, an initiative that Orkin employees are also prioritizing this mosquito season. This option allows the public to pledge to donate blood in your area, on your own time.

People can sign up to donate through Aug. 31, 2022.

ServiceTitan acquires Schedule Engine

LOGOS: SERVICETITAN AND SCHEDULE ENGINE

ServiceTitan, the parent company of FieldRoutes and ServicePro, has acquired Schedule Engine, a provider of online booking for home and commercial services.

The acquisition will bolster ServiceTitan’s suite of technology solutions and increase investment in Schedule Engine’s technology and products.

“Booking an appointment is one of the most important interactions a service business has with its customers, and the trades industry is already seeing a significant increase in jobs being booked online,” according to a news release. Schedule Engine’s technology is designed to make the experience fast, simple and effective.

“Just like ServiceTitan, Schedule Engine was born out of a desire to solve the problems that hardworking tradespeople face every single day,” said Ara Mahdessian, CEO and co-founder of ServiceTitan. “Online scheduling technology is a ‘must-have’ for any trades business looking to deliver a modern and seamless customer experience, and Schedule Engine has built by far the most advanced and intuitive solution we’ve seen to date. We’re thrilled to partner with Vincent and the Schedule Engine team to advance our mission of equipping contractors with the technology they deserve.”

Founded in 2016 by Austin Haller as a solution for his father’s contracting business, Schedule Engine provides a comprehensive customer solution for trade businesses.

Schedule Engine enables service providers to deliver the seamless experience that end-consumers have come to expect, including fully integrated online booking technology, automated customer messaging and remote technician video diagnosis. The company also provides contractors with better information earlier in the booking process to increase both efficiency and profitability in the field.

“Schedule Engine and ServiceTitan share a mission to bring the best and most advanced technology available to the trades industry,” said Vincent Payen, CEO of Schedule Engine. “Our scheduling technology gives contractors the tools they need to never miss a job and their customers the ability to easily schedule an appointment at any time through our online booking tool, live chat, or by simply picking up the phone. We’re also equipping trade businesses with powerful analytics that simplify the entire booking process and optimize jobs. I can’t wait to see what the Schedule Engine and ServiceTitan teams are able to accomplish together.”

Payen will be reporting directly to Connor Theilmann, who was recently promoted to chief business officer of ServiceTitan.

According to a recent survey conducted by ServiceTitan, a majority of home service providers believe that more than 30 percent of their jobs will be booked through an online scheduling tool over the next three years, and more than two-thirds of home service providers plan on investing in online booking technology within the next year.

BASF: Termidor SC Termiticide/Insecticide

IMAGE: BASF

IMAGE: BASF

Termidor SC Termiticide/Insecticide takes advantage of the social behavior of ants and the transfer effect to directly affect the colony. As ants pass through areas treated with the non-repellent insecticide, they can pick up a lethal dose that is transferred when they return to the colony, controlling the queen(s) and eliminating the colony. Termidor SC Termiticide/Insecticide has low water solubility, low odor, and won’t damage water-safe surfaces, the company says. Its easy-to-use formulation is suitable for all low-pressure power, backpack, hand-held sprayers and foamers.

Attendees went wild for Wildlife Expo 2022

PHOTO: NWCOA

WCOs Jon Ciske and Mark Prusaitis not only gave a presentation on metal exclusion (pictured), but later helped attendees try their hand at metal-bending techniques in the vendor room. PHOTO: NWCOA

In February, the National Wildlife Control Operators Association (NWCOA) and the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) jointly presented Wildlife Expo 2022 in Orlando, Fla. After missing 2021’s event due to travel restrictions and other health orders, I’m happy to report this year’s event was a success. A low number of cancellations and a high number of walk-in registrations were very pleasant surprises, with attendance at a little under 500. A huge thanks goes to all attendees, vendors and presenters, as well as platinum sponsors Wildlife Control Supplies and AAC Distributing.

The Wildlife Expo is a training event for pest management professionals (PMPs) and wildlife control operators (WCOs), featuring three days of a la carte-style certified training and two days of presentations by operators providing wildlife, rodent and bird control. It is a must-attend event for providers, as well as those thinking of providing such services to clients.

Day One kicked off with a keynote presented by Timothy Madere of Louisiana’s City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board. He explained the organization’s work with rodent control during the COVID-19 pandemic, detailing rodent movements and predation among rat species. A real eye-opener was the discussion about Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) predation on roof rats (R. rattus) on glue boards.

PHOTO: NWCOA

Dan Glock, owner of All Out Bird Control, Fort Wayne, Ind., displays the latest firearms technologies at Wildlife Expo 2022. PHOTO: NWCOA

Day Two featured a keynote delivered by Baltimore, Md.-based lawyer Rabbi Shmuel Simenowitz. With working knowledge of pest and wildlife control, Simenowitz can take a legal issue presentation and weave it into a place where it is entertaining and has you wondering whether he has gone off topic — only to have him bring it back to a conclusion that has you understanding and appreciating legal ramifications.

Other Wildlife Expo presentations focused on removal techniques, business building, advertising and product usage. Several of them offered continuing education units (CEUs).

A particular highlight of the event was when Jon Ciske with New Jersey Pest Control and Mark Prusaitis of Wildman Pest Solutions led a presentation on metal exclusion of wildlife. They featured hands-on metal break usage and provided detailed exclusion techniques.

The vendor room was packed with providers of products and services to both PMPs and WCOs, many of which offered attendee-only specials. It was a hotbed of activity.

Wildlife Expo 2023 is set for Feb. 7-9 at the Marriott Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes. Certified training will be available two days before and one day after. Visit NWCOA.com for updates.

USDA leads Beenome100 project to map bee genomes

PHOTO: UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

Franklin’s bumble bee PHOTO: USDA

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Services is leading a project dubbed “Beenome100” to produce high-quality maps of the genomes of at least 100 bee species.

The project will capture the diversity of bees in the U.S. and represent each of the major bee taxonomic groups in this country.

Per a news release, there are about “4,000 native bee species in this country, from the giant, colorful Sonoran bumble bee to the 0.08-inch solitary bee Perdita minima. There are also more than 55 non-native been species, some of which are agriculturally essential such as the European honey bee and the alfalfa leaf cutter bee.”

Once a genome is mapped, the data becomes publicly available for scientists to work on the next step: linking functions to specific genes. The data is housed in the “i5k Workspace@NAL,” an online “toolshed” at ARS’ National Agricultural Library, which allows scientists from many organizations to work cooperatively on bioinformatics.

There are many reasons why having these genomic maps covering the taxonomic diversity of bees are useful tools, added entomologist Dr. Michael Branstetter with the ARS Pollinating Insect-Biology, Management, Systematics Research Unit in Logan, Utah. Dr. Branstetter recently returned from a bee collecting trip in southern Arizona, bringing back as many 80 species that have been frozen, some of which will have their genome sequenced to become part of the Beenome100 library.

“It can be difficult to ID bees in the field, especially the tiny species. When endangered bee species are present, we need to be cautious about collecting too many individuals in our efforts to survey for them, and this risk is likely growing,” Dr. Branstetter said. “But with their genome documented, flowers may be able to be swabbed for the DNA of bees that have visited, and this information could be used to non-destructively monitor species.”

One species this is being tried out on is the Franklin’s bumble bee, which hasn’t been seen in a decade in its tiny range in southern Oregon and northern California. Its genome was mapped from museum specimens. If the system works and matching bee DNA is found in a flower swab, that would be documented proof of finding a particular bee like this one without taking a specimen from the wild.

In the bigger picture, the bee genomes will help provide a better understanding of how bees as a whole fit into the world, and how they vary and change with their environment — from the evolution of specialization between bee species and particular flowers to the impact of non-native bee species.

“Take the threatened Mojave poppy bee, a quarter-inch-long desert bee native to parts of Utah, Nevada and California, where it is a very important specialist pollinator of the endangered Las Vegas bearpoppy and the dwarf bearclaw poppy. And it belongs to a taxonomic family that hasn’t ever been sequenced for genomics,” Dr. Branstetter said.

He hopes that knowing more about its genes will make the genetic basis for this specialist trait and how it evolved clearer.

On this most recent collecting trip in Arizona, Dr. Branstetter was especially after an unusual type of bee to add to the Beenome library: parasite cuckoo bees, a group of solitary bee species that reproduce by laying their eggs in other bee’s nests.

Parasite cuckoo bees are supposed to be rather rare.

“We found not just one or two, they were abundant. We found specimens of parasite bees from three different genera,” he said.

That may be some of the most important information to come from the Beenome100 Project, said Dr. Branstetter, “Information that will teach us more about what bees we really have in our environment and how better to conserve the bees we have.”

Align your team to meet your company objectives

Photo: patpitchaya/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty images

Photo: patpitchaya/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty images

As PCO Bookkeepers has grown from a few number-crunching accountants into an industry resource, with dozens of team members providing accounting, data analytics and technology enabled scorecard reporting, we’ve experienced the same issues that many of our pest management clients experience in terms of aligning our team to live our mission, practice our core values, and win together.

To move us forward, a few years ago my partner Anthony Pepe attended a program at Harvard
Business School. It was led by management guru Dr. Robert Kaplan, co-author of The Balanced Scorecard: Translating Strategy into Action. Dr. Kaplan drove home the point that not only do you need a strategy, you need to share it with your team to maximize company performance. Otherwise, you have a bunch of people who come to work, punch a clock, and collect a paycheck.

Dr. Kaplan recommends creating a Strategy Statement. It should be 50 words or fewer, and include your:

  • Objective (number of clients, desired revenue figure, number of routes, etc.).
  • Scope of business (the types of business you will or will not pursue, to create boundaries for your team).
  • Advantage over your competitors (a specific expertise, such as knowledge to perform your service for high-end food processors).

Once you’ve defined and shared your strategy, the next step is to execute it. This is accomplished through a Strategy Map, which provides a framework for managers and employees to follow. The four components of a business Strategy Map are:

  1. Financial perspective, which describes the outcomes of the strategy in financial terms, such as revenue, profitability or other financial ratios.
  2. Customer perspective, which outlines your target client’s value — maybe it’s quality or innovation.
  3. Internal process perspective, which names several essential processes that are expected to have the greatest impact on your business strategy.
  4. Learning and growth perspective, which identifies the intangible assets (jobs, systems and climate) that are most important to your strategy.

CREATE A SCORECARD

Dan Gordon, CPA

The Balanced Scorecard is how you translate strategy into action. It connects the Strategy Map to measures, targets and initiatives. Having balance provides longer-term stability. It makes a company less susceptible to competitive and market changes.

For example, from a financial perspective, a pest control company may set goals around — and measure — profitability and revenue. In the customer quadrant, pest control companies may establish indicators around client surveys like cancellations, referrals or a Net Promoter Score.  When it comes to internal processes, companies may measure route efficiency, windshield time or customer response times.

Finally, for learning and growth, a pest control firm may track and measure continuing education units (CEUs) or other employee training endeavors.

All of these indicators are monitored with actuals vs. targets. Ideally, managers always can see how they’re doing in these four areas on a monthly, quarterly and/or annual basis.

USE ACCURATE DATA

PCO Bookkeepers has had tremendous success implementing the Balanced Scorecard approach. If you are thinking of implementing a Balanced Scorecard initiative, the most important aspect, once all the groundwork is complete, is data consistency and accuracy. People must trust the system. The data all comes from your routing, accounting and other sources, and must be reported accurately so there is no doubt about the numbers used.

The set of Plodia/Trogoderma/Lasioderma (PTL) Multi-Species Bullet Lures (IL-108-10) features Insect Limited’s signature, synthetically designed and laboratory-produced pheromone Bullet Lures that attract Indianmeal moths, Mediterranean flour moths, almond moths, tobacco moths, warehouse beetles, cigarette beetles and other food moth species with a controlled release of pheromone over three months. Male moths and beetles are attracted to the lure and are readily stuck in the glue when paired with a sticky trap trapping system. These lures can then tell you whether moths are present, where they are coming from and whether the control measures you have taken are working.

Scientists suggest RIFA can be controlled by virus

A new study suggests that Solenopsis invicta virus 3 (SINV-3) can be used as a natural way to control red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta, or RIFA)  colonies.

Invasive species of fire ant reached North America in the 1930s from Argentina and spread fast in southern states of the US, currently costing  $6 billion a year in economic damage, according to ZME Science. While the solution so far has been pesticides, a study is now suggesting using a virus to tackle the problem.

Researchers reported a sevenfold decrease in the number and size of RIFA nests after being exposed to the virus.

“We’re quite pleased that it contributes to the natural control of [red imported] fire ants,” Dr. Steven Valles, the lead author of the study and researcher at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, told The Washington Post. “It’s important to continue to release things that will naturally control the ant to give it more ecological balance with the native ants so that they can compete.”

The virus is naturally present in the U.S., but its prevalence is low and infrequent.

Prior to the study, viruses have been used as biocontrol agents against some pests, but never against ants. To date, only SINV-3 has been proven in the lab to cause mortality at a level sufficient enough to act as a biocontrol agent against fire ants.

Researchers focused solely on RIFA, which occupies 150 million hectares from Florida to California and is responsible for damages to crops and livestock. The virus was effective at clearing out the RIFA, according to the study.

Would you try to use the SINV-3 virus as a way to control RIFA colonies? Tell us in an email at pmpeditor@northcoastmedia.net.

CSI parent company to self-produce indoxacarb

IMAGES: CONTROL SOLUTIONS INC.

IMAGES: CONTROL SOLUTIONS INC.

ADAMA, parent company of Pasadena, Texas-based Control Solutions Inc. (CSI), has begun the in-house production of indoxacarb, a key insecticide active ingredient. This is part of ADAMA’s new proprietary synthesis process, providing a building block for its differentiated formulations.

Producing this complex molecule with an innovative, cost-effective process is expected to improve ADAMA’s supply chain performance while opening access to a global market of approximately $200 million in indoxacarb sales as of 2021.

ADAMA has launched a number of mixtures and formulations based on indoxacarb, which deliver significant pest control in a variety of affected crop and countries as well as for pest professionals.

“With its vast global market potential, we identified indoxacarb as a key building block for ADAMA’s future differentiated product pipeline,” said Elad Shabtai, EVP Global Operations at ADAMA. “This new in-house production capability of indoxacarb is expected to improve the Company’s control over the availability, quality and cost of this important active ingredient. Moreover, our indoxacarb formulations deliver powerful solutions, thus combining our AI cost position with superior product features on the formulation side”

ADAMA is targeting more than 15 countries with its self-produced indoxacarb, including leading markets in the USA, Brazil and India. It is a key active ingredient for various insecticides, including ADAMA’s products Plethora (India, Brazil), Plemax (Australia, South Africa) and Doxem (U.S.).

In addition to the potential sales of indoxacarb, ADAMA expects to expand the production and sales of its proprietary active ingredient, novaluron, due to increased demand, given that these two active ingredients are paired together in formulations to provide a highly effective solution against chewing pests in their early stages of development.

Taking the sting out of a painful job hazard

PHOTO: SCHOPEN PEST SOLUTIONS

Pete Schopen with technician (and half-bee-suit model) Justin Gutierrez. PHOTO: SCHOPEN PEST SOLUTIONS

In 1987, during my first summer of pest control, I set out to tackle my first-ever bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) nest. My 18-year-old self would be treating sans personal protective equipment (PPE), because my dad, Pete Sr., didn’t believe in wearing it. He was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army, so he was old-school and hard-core.

I loaded up my 40-foot ladder, bulb duster and 1-foot copper extension, and jumped in my truck. As I was driving out of the parking lot, Dad gave me some advice: “Stick the extension in the main hole on the nest, give the bulb duster a firm squeeze, and then get the heck out of there.”

He added, “Don’t admire your handiwork. Just leave.”

As I approached the customer’s barn, I could see the nest at the peak. It was over 30 feet up
and huge. But I was young and dumb, and with Dad’s advice echoing in my head, I began to climb the ladder.

When I reached the nest, a couple of hornets greeted me by buzzing my head. Otherwise, my ascent was pretty uneventful. I shook my bulb duster, enjoying the familiar rattle inside (I always put two pennies in my bulb duster to sift the powder). I jabbed the foot-long extension into the hornet nest and let it rip!

Pete Schopen

Pete Schopen, owner
and founder, Schopen Pest Solutions

Despite Dad’s warning about not admiring my handiwork, I tried looking inside the nest because nothing was happening. So, I blasted it again. As I pulled out my duster, the nest started to vibrate. It was almost like watching a cartoon as they started flying out of the nest, most of them gray from the dust. I was mesmerized — and that was my downfall.
The first sting on my arm woke me up out of the trance. The second sting made me aware that I was a complete fool and in deep trouble.

Luckily, I realized I was 30 feet up in the air, and slowly started to climb back down the ladder. Two stings later, I said an equivalent of “forget this” and did a fireman slide down the ladder (wrapped my feet around the ladder’s frame and slid). It sounded like hail falling on my baseball cap, there were so many hornets dive-bombing me.

I hit the ground hard, rolled to my right side and sprinted to the truck on two sprained ankles. Even in my truck, the hornets were bouncing off of my windshield.

LEARNING FROM EXPERIENCE

I commemorate that day by hosting the annual “Schopen Pest Solutions Wasp Dead Pool.” The Dead Pool is to promote safety, and to have some fun with my staff. Individually, we pick the first person we think will get stung that summer. During our April End-of-the-Month Training meeting, I hand out sheets with every employee’s name on the list. I give odds on who I think will get stung first. Techs, billing people, sales staff, customer service representatives (CSRs), managers are all on the list. I’m on there, too. Whether people get stung on the job or at home matters not. The only thing that is important is who gets stung first.

The rules are simple. More than one person can pick the same unlucky individual, but you cannot pick yourself. Whatever the odds are for the person who gets stung first is the cash value of the gift card that I will present to the winner(s) at our next company meeting.

For example, my wife, Tami, is 100-1 odds. Yes, even the Queen is fair game. If she gets stung before everyone else, everyone who picked her name gets a $100 gift card.

By contrast, Bradley’s odds are 20-1. That’s because he’s a new technician, and I expect him to get stung this summer. The payoff for him is just $20, but on the other hand, the chance of him getting nailed first is pretty high.

Believe it or not, this is a great way to promote wearing PPE. None of the techs wants to get stung, but sometimes they get in a hurry and don’t put on their bee suits. Because nobody wants to be the first summertime victim, though, they are very good about putting on their equipment.

EXTRA PRECAUTIONS TO CONSIDER

Bee suits aren’t the only way to stay safe on the job, of course:

  • Lay off the cologne or perfume. There are conflicting studies on whether this is a real threat, but why announce your presence?
  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves. If you are still using dust for yellowjacket jobs, they can smell the product and will follow the trail back to your hands.
  • Some PPE is better than none. A half-bee suit is just the top, with a very comfortable mask and hoodie. I still advise wearing thick gloves. But even a face shield, gloves and coveralls can do the trick.

If you have any questions about our Wasp Dead Pool, feel free to call me or shoot me an email. Remember, it is for fun. No gambling is taking place, because I am picking the odds and handing out the prizes. Email me at pete@schopenpest.com with your craziest stinging insect story. I’d love to hear from you.

About Liphatech

With U.S. headquarters based in Milwaukee, Wis., Liphatech is a worldwide manufacturer of pest control products. It is considered to be the developer of three of the industry’s active ingredients: chlorophacinone, bromadiolone and difethialone. The company was founded in France in 1946 io develop anticoagulants for the treatment of heart patients. It developed chlorophacinone in the 1960s and branded it as Rozol, a family of products that includes grain and pelleted products for field and structural use, and a tracking powder for use in and around structures. In the 1970s, Liphatech developed bromadiolone, its original second-generation rodenticide active ingredient.

The innovations continued with the opening of its U.S. facility in 1987. Research there and in Europe resulted in the discovery of difethialone during the late 1980s, with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registration as an active ingredient in 1995. Its most recent innovation is the development of soft bait rodenticides.

Use ancient insight to control stubborn pharaoh ants

Photo: courtesy of, and copyrighted by, Gene White, pmimages@earthlink.net

Photo: courtesy of, and copyrighted by, Gene White, pmimages@earthlink.net

When pest management professionals (PMPs) think of stubborn pests, one of the first names that comes to mind is the pharaoh ant (Monomorium pharaonis).

However, the most recognizable pharaoh in history wasn’t named. Although popular depictions* of the Exodus story identify Ramesses II as the antagonist, the Hebrew scriptures omit the pharaoh’s name.

In the story of Exodus, the pharaoh’s “heart was hardened” at least five times, resulting in
10 plagues brought upon Egypt. This stubborn behavior has theological implications that won’t be explored here, but suffice to say that it took some extraordinary effort, including multiple pest plagues, before the Israelites could escape from slavery in Egypt. Let’s explore two pest control lessons that can be learned from this story:

1. Unlike the unnamed pharaoh of the Bible, identify your pest. Because of the pharaoh ant’s predilection for budding when exposed to repellent insecticides, proper identification is a requirement. By determining exactly which pest ant is infesting the structure, a comprehensive management program can be developed based on its biology and behavior.

2. Pharaoh ant infestations can be stubborn, often requiring multiple callbacks to get satisfactory control. In most parts of the country, pharaoh ant nests will be found indoors due to the species’ temperature requirements. Based on this information, technicians sometimes limit their treatment to the indoor areas of the account. But despite their indoor nesting preference, pharaoh ants will eagerly forage outside to find food during warm weather. Because infestations often are comprised of multiple small colonies, apply numerous small bait placements — according to label instructions — both inside and out.

It may have taken 10 plagues to get through to the pharaoh of Exodus, but with some extra knowledge, it shouldn’t take 10 callbacks to rid your client’s building of stubborn pharaoh ants.

*See The Ten Commandments (Paramount Pictures, 1956), directed by Cecil B. DeMille and starring Charlton Heston, or The Prince of Egypt (DreamWorks Pictures, 1998), an animated adaptation of the movie.
