If you’re not using training videos to educate your team of employees, you might be 30 years behind the times.
In a December 1990 issue of Pest Control magazine, now Pest Management Professional (PMP), Dr. Austin Frishman suggested videos can be used as effective training tools for technicians: Before running a video, point out ahead to the trainees what they should be looking for. Then quiz them afterward.
Dr. Frishman, a PMP Hall of Famer (Class of 2002), suggested some dos and don’ts for getting the most value from a training video: Never show a video to your employees without first previewing it yourself. The content might contradict company policy, may be boring, or may not pertain to what you wanted to cover.
Don’t underestimate the value of the atmosphere, Dr. Frishman said: Provide the viewers with comfortable chairs, and pads and pens to take notes. To facilitate writing, either have tables set up in the room or have clipboards available.
Dr. Frishman noted that training videos can be valuable for the whole office, including administrative staff and salespeople: This gives everyone in the company an idea what the others are learning.
Today, employees are 75 percent more likely to watch a video than read documents, emails or web articles, according to Forrester Research. Resources available today make creating or viewing videos easy.
Can’t find training videos that fit with your company culture? Dr. Frishman suggested creating your own: A simple objective can become a 5-minute video. Try one, you will like it.
