What to know before removing birds

Removing birds from a building always is difficult, but there are a few things you should keep in mind as you go about your task. Remember that many bird species are protected by local, state and/or federal law and cannot be killed. If in doubt, talk to your local wildlife organization(s) before you start work. Three more tips to review:

1. Find out what is attracting the birds. It could be birdbaths, fountains, easily accessible food sources (such as bird feeders), or even open garbage bins. Nip the problem in the bud by removing these temptations, if possible.

2. Remove any nests you find, unless they contain eggs or chicks. These you would leave undisturbed until they leave the nest, which will be soon enough. This applies to all species, even unprotected ones.

3. Use a respirator and gloves when you throw away nesting materials. They can harbor various disease and viruses.
