Basic safety tips when using disinfectant or sanitizer

Noel McCarthy is a staff writer at Sterifab.com.

Noel McCarthy is a staff writer at Sterifab.com.

Disinfecting and sanitizing a home, office or retail space is not just a good way to “de-bug” a place, it also can help prevent the spread of disease-spreading pathogens. Remember, sanitizers and disinfectants are different from each other: Sanitizers kill bacteria on surfaces, but do not kill viruses. Disinfectants kill viruses.

That said, there are some basic safety steps you should take whenever you use any kind of disinfectant or sanitizer, including:

  • Wear eye protection and disposable gloves when you are spraying disinfectants or sanitizers. Discard the used gloves appropriately after use.
  • Ensure the account’s workspace has adequate ventilation while you are disinfecting or sanitizing. It also is important that you store all your chemicals — disinfectants and sanitizers included — in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. Never store them close together or with flammable materials.
  • If you are spraying hard surfaces (wood, tile, etc.), use enough disinfectant or sanitizer so they remain wet. Allow surfaces to dry naturally, as opposed to using a dryer. Doing so guarantees that all the germs are eliminated.

Top 10 MyPMP.net stories of 2022

Photo: sinseeho/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Photo: sinseeho/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

This year seems to have flown by, and it seems like I just wrote the roundup for 2021. But that’s not the case. I once again asked Pest Management Professional (PMP) Digital Editor Ellen Wagner to put our top stories of this year into a list. The results are below, with a bit of color commentary from me:

10. Bayer’s Environmental Science Professional to become Envu: This long-awaited development became reality just days before the National Pest Management Association’s (NPMA’s) PestWorld event in Boston, Mass., in November. The timing allowed the new company to answer questions from customers in-person on the show floor, and reassure them that the people and products were going to remain the same — that the new status only means it will be able to do more research and bring new technologies to market that much faster.

9. Rate your rat knowledge: Our monthly “Tech Test” feature has long been a hit with readers, and evidently, our January 2022 edition on rodents struck a particular chord. Check out all of our “Tech Test” features to-date here.

8. The patron saints of PMPs, pests: What started as a lark for St. Patrick’s Day actually ended up being a deep dive on which Catholic saints are tied to aspects of pest management. It’s personally one of my favorite stories of the year.

7. Do spiders dream? This interesting study found that not only do jumping spiders dream, but while “asleep,” they can distinguish between what is a gentle breeze vs. a vibration on the web from the intruder.

6. Is the ERC an IRS audit waiting to happen? Our financial columnist, Dan Gordon, CPA, explains the risk if you took advantage of the Employee Retention Credit (ERC).

5. IN MEMORIAM: Gene White, BCE: The industry lost a good man in September, an entomologist and talented photographer who was the life of any party, a knowledgeable colleague, an engaging presenter, a loyal friend and by all accounts an amazing husband, father and grandfather. We were lucky enough to have Gene attend the PMP Growth Summit in March, and interviewed him (as we did all attendees) for some pearls of wisdom. A video compilation of his responses is here.

4. Cedarwood oil found to repel ticks: In the study, the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) in particular was just as repelled by the oil as it was by DEET. It will be interesting to see if new products emerge for the professional pest control market that makes use of this repellent feature.

3. Rentokil/Terminix merger expected to close Oct. 12: It’s no surprise that what many consider to be the biggest industry story of 2022 made our Top 10. In fact, I’m just a bit taken aback it ranks No. 3, not No. 1. I suppose that’s because it was a long time in coming, having been first announced in December 2021.

2. EPA seeks public comment on proposed rodenticide updates: This is a story that just broke last month, although again, we’ve been reporting on the steps that led the EPA to this point for a while. It wouldn’t surprise me if this becomes the top story of 2023; I hope that the industry is ready to fight to ensure that professional use is kept intact and not burdened with extraneous restrictions.

1. Study: Bed bugs produce large amounts of histamine: This story set records for clicks (and comments from a lot of consumers). We’d rather be the media outlet of choice for pest management professionals, but having a study confirm an allergic reaction ability from Cimex lectularius seemed to strike a nerve with the public, too. Again, time will tell what the results of this story will have on how PMPs treat for bed bugs in the months and years to come.

Use the right equipment for the right job

Anna Berry

Anna Berry, technical director at B&G

In disinfection, it’s important to use the right equipment for the right job. Your formulation will dictate whether surface disinfection (spray) or space disinfection (fog) is appropriate. Surface disinfection requires dwell time, where the formulation appears “wet.” By contrast, space disinfection treats the surrounding air.

The droplet size a fogger is advertised and set for refers to the average size of all droplets produced within its plume. Larger droplets are heavier and drop out of the air faster; smaller droplets are lighter and travel farther distances. This causes the end of the plume to have smaller droplet sizes compared to the beginning of the plume. Factor in the plume size, or throw, of your fogger for space disinfection. Know which droplet size you’re aiming for, and how far within the machine’s plume you’ll achieve said size.

For space disinfection, research shows that positively charged electrostatic (ES) fogging prevents small droplets from aggregating into larger heavier particles. This prevents your fog from inadvertently becoming a heavier spray. Research also suggests that ES foggers allow particles to curve around surfaces, such as handrails, for hard-to-reach areas.

For the most effective treatment, of course, always follow the formulation label and equipment manufacturer’s directions.

What is a good company policy on receiving holiday gifts and tips from customers?

Photo: Prostock-Studio/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Photo: Prostock-Studio/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

We asked Pest Management Professional’s columnists and editorial advisory board members to name essentials to keep in work vehicles. Here are some of the experts’ responses from our November 2022 print edition.

Please take a minute to answer our latest one-question poll on this topic and let us know how you promote disinfecting and sanitizing services: Reader poll: What is a good company policy on receiving holiday gifts and tips from customers?

PMP’s Editorial Advisory Board and Regular Contributors

Jerry Schappert, ACE: “Our policy is if they appreciate us, they are generous. We have no issues with our technicians getting gifts or tips. My most unusual tip was a Green Bay Packers jean jacket. They are my favorite team, and it’s a really cool jacket!”

Dennis Jenkins: “Our policy has always been to politely refuse the gift, but if the customer is insistent, to graciously accept it. We also let our customers know that we collect toys for underprivileged children to be donated at a local food bank. They also let customers know that they get a ticket for a chance for cash prizes for each gift they collect. This allows us to do something nice for children in need and allows customers to show appreciation.”

We have been doing this for over 20 years. It was really challenging during the pandemic, but our folks came through and we delivered over 2,000 toys to Christian Community Action (a local community service for folks in need). We also partner with over 150 charitable organizations by donating pest control services and a few by partnering at a deeper level. The program is called Anteater Advocates, and my wife Jennifer runs it as the Anteater Advocate Coordinator. We track the value of the services we donate and the annual value is just over $360K.”

Michael Broder: “We do not have restrictions on employees accepting gifts. It is so hard to come up with meaningful gifts to give our customers, so one great move we’ve begun is making charitable donations in our customers’ names. This has been a win-win for everyone.”

Doug Foster: “We don’t have a written guideline on tips or gifts, but I’m delighted when any member of our team is rewarded by our customers and clients. I feel that anything that’s not illegal is acceptable.”

“We have been given some cool gifts over the years — tickets, liquor, candy, baked goods — but the sweetest and most memorable are from an older lady who has handmade Christmas ornaments for every one of our staff for the past nine years. Her face lights up each year when she brings them in!”

Paul Hardy: “The issue is the possibility of incurring taxes on gifts. Check with your financial team about tax regulations in your market. As for my most unusual tip? One year, we were given a dog!”

Pest Management Systems, Inc. (PMi) received the Outstanding Business in Philanthropy Award for the Association of Fundraising Professionals – Triad Chapter.

The company was nominated by the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro, the Greensboro Science Center and AuthoraCare Collective.

Part of the PMi team went to the awards ceremony, held on Nov. 21. Billy and Laurie Tesh received the award on behalf of PMi and were also both recipients of the Spirit of Philanthropy Award and were recognized at the event for their personal and professional contributions.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals wrote about the company: “Pest Management Systems, Inc (PMI) is a homegrown, locally owned company whose founder, Billy Tesh, believes in sharing his business success with his community. Since founding the company in 1984, Billy has immersed his family and employees in a culture of philanthropy through partnerships with various organizations. PMI employees volunteer with Habitat build sites, host food drives and coat drives, and participate in 5ks to benefit the neighborhoods where their business is located. Since 1987 when Habitat Greensboro opened, PMI has provided at no charge the termite pre-treatments for every new Habitat home, which to date is over 500 homes! Billy’s daughter Julie has taken up the mantle of philanthropic leadership. Julie Tesh has become one of the Greensboro community’s most sought-after volunteer event chairs. Every day, Billy, Julie, and all the employees show that PMI Cares.”

Billy Tesh, president of PMi and Pest Management Professional Hall of Famer (Class of 2017), added, “To have been given this accolade for philanthropy has given us so much joy. It has been a privilege of ours to give back to such notable causes for over three decades now. Giving personally of our time through events and our sponsorships, has been so rewarding to see the lives touched and the awareness that is raised for these organizations. The work these organizations do to make a difference each day gives us more motivation to continue to give back to them and help the impact reach further. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with all the volunteers that care so much about these causes and what it does for our community. We love that these are relationships we will continue to partner with for years to come and build them up for all the good they all do for so many.”

Tips for help with ‘Clean Working’

Matt Remmen

Matt Remmen

There’s no denying that it’s important to clean up pests, but equally important is protecting yourself and leaving a worksite in as good, or even better condition than you found it. It is important to maintain personal hygiene, keep the site clean, and avoid cross-contamination between client sites.

Following a few simple steps can help with “Clean Working”:

  1. The most important thing is to use the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect yourself and clients. No customer wants you to drag remnants of the last job, stuck to your shirt and shoes, into their homes.
  2. When using gloves, make sure you use the right type and the proper techniques to dispose of them. Here is a good example of glove disposal techniques: Depts.ttu.edu/ehs/academicsafety/posters/glove-removal.pdf.
  3. Keep a few clean shirts in your vehicle. If you soil a shirt, change before your next appointment to maintain a professional appearance.
  4. Clean up the site before you leave. If you’ve had to move furniture or disturb the client’s belongings, make sure you put things back the way they were. Also, remove dead rodents, insects, rodent feces or other pest waste, all of which have their own set of best practices.

Clean working is almost as important as pest control to maintain and preserve a professional reputation, and to sustain best practices for personal and customer site health.

COVID-19 reveals PMPs are ready to disinfect and sanitize

Dr. Jamel Sandidge, BCE

Dr. Jamel Sandidge, BCE

COVID-19 revealed a major asset: Pest management professionals (PMPs) are ready, willing and able to help protect the public from disease transmission and emerging threats. For many companies, disinfecting and sanitizing services have become part of their normal procedures. Disinfection is an essential component after wildlife removal, rodent services, cockroach cleanouts, and drain services for small flies. It works to protect both PMPs and the public from the many diseases pests may carry or spread.

As PMPs, some of our many goals are to anticipate and prevent infestations, limit damage and economic impact, and improve health and safety. Preventing the contamination of food, feed, contact surfaces, air and water is an essential component to safeguarding public health. Consider the following:

  • Cleaning physically removes germs from surfaces, but may not kill germs.
  • Sanitizing significantly reduces the number of germs on surfaces (by up to 99.9 percent) to safer levels.
  • Sanitizers kill most, but not all bacteria; they do not destroy viruses.
  • Disinfecting kills or inactivates virtually all microbes — including fungi and viruses — on hard surfaces (up to 99.999 percent).
  • For proper disinfection, treated surfaces must remain visibly wet for a recommended period per label instructions (usually 10 minutes).

Benefits of offering cleaning and disinfection to customers

Dr. Cisse Spragins

Dr. Cisse Spragins, founder and CEO, Rockwell Labs

Disinfection has become top of mind for the past few years, with many pest management professionals (PMPs) embracing the opportunity to provide these services. The term sanitation generally means cleaning, which is removal of debris from surfaces. Bio Sanitation is a term that Rockwell coined to refer to cleaning using beneficial microbes to digest organic debris.

General cleaning products are not registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The agency does, however, register antimicrobial products labeled to kill harmful bacteria and viruses. Sanitizers are generally milder, and are required by the EPA to kill 99.9 percent of bacteria on surfaces. Disinfectants are stronger and can be harsher. The EPA requires that they kill 99.999 percent of both viruses and bacteria
on surfaces.

Sanitizers and disinfectants are often not cleaning products, meaning they aren’t designed to remove debris. In some cases, they may not work well in the presence of debris, so cleaning the surface first may be required. Both cleaning and disinfection are beneficial services that PMPs can offer, with the former also helping to remove conducive conditions for insects and rodents.

Lastly, the term biocide can be used for pesticides of all types, although in the U.S., it is more commonly used for antimicrobials specifically.

Get bed bugs to check out, permanently

Photo: onurdongel/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Every hotel guest brings in a risk of a new bed bug infestation along with their luggage, to varying degrees. Photo: onurdongel/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Question: I am having trouble eliminating bed bugs in a luxury hotel. We seem to get rid of them, but then they show up again. What am I missing?
— Being Undeterred, Gathering Good Information Necessary for Greatness

Answer: Thank you for the question, BUGGING. I know that answering a question with more questions can be frustrating, but as I sit here at my desk, I’m not sure what you’re missing.

The first question is, are you inspecting and treating the structure — meaning the wall voids as well as the interior of the room and the furnishings within? Bed bugs often can be found just inside electrical and other utility outlets, and behind or under baseboards. Many times, there is a substantial gap between the bottom of the wall surface and the floor, which is hidden by baseboards. However, usually there is enough room for bed bugs to crawl between the floor covering and the baseboards in commercial establishments.

The next question would be, have you been thoroughly inspecting any adjoining rooms? I have been in hotels that have had reports of activity in one room, but have activity in a room right next door without any reports of bites or sightings. It may seem overly aggressive; however, when you get repeat calls for the same problem, you have to investigate every possibility with an assumption of equal probability. That certainly doesn’t mean you start applying pesticides indiscriminately, it just means you need to thoroughly inspect more areas.

Dan Baldwin

Dan Baldwin, BCE, CCFS, CP-FS, REHS/RS

Another factor to consider is how the housekeeping operation works in the hotel. I recall one hotel that frequently had bed bug issues at the two rooms at the end of the hallway. These rooms were across from one another; they were not adjoining rooms. There was nothing particularly special about these rooms, other than their location in the hotel. It turned out that one member of the housekeeping team would collect the dirty linens from the rooms in one cart, while other members cleaned and prepped the rooms. The collection cart then sat at the end of the hallway while they finished everything up.

Human activity usually is at the root of bed bug issues, so we have to understand what consistent human activities occur in the hotel.

Once you have looked at all the parts of the structure that touch one another, and have a good understanding of how the staff works in the hotel, you have to take a look at your treatment protocols. This is not to say that you have to question the materials you are using. Rather, you have to evaluate how, where and why you use them. Without inspecting the hotel myself, I certainly can’t tell you which treatment approach or what materials would be most appropriate. But I would suggest that you think about all the structural components and furnishings in the room and ask yourself, “Is the treatment method I am using likely to kill all the bed bugs in and around this area?” In other words, are the bed bugs that might be in the room that you don’t see likely to come in contact with your treated surfaces? Is it the right formulation for the surface?

And, saving the best for last, are you leaving bed bugs behind? Hopefully, you are using an appropriate vacuum cleaner to physically remove bed bugs, as it’s a great tool for most insect pests. A strong vacuum with a crack-and-crevice tool can remove bugs and eggs you didn’t see. Removing insects and eggs from the environment is a vital component of an effective pest management program.

Reflecting on 3 years as a columnist

Greg Baumann

Greg Baumann

Every trade journal has a responsibility to readers to be dynamic, changing to encourage fresh content, looks, feel and value. Pest Management Professional (PMP) is a great publication going back to 1933.

While on staff at the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), I would periodically use my lunch break to read old original copies of Exterminators Log, the forerunner of today’s PMP. The NPMA’s library held a vast collection going all the way back to the first issue. It was striking how the industry has changed, yet some problems we face today were faced back in 1933 as well. Staffing challenges, product efficacy, safety and even gas prices all were mentioned in some of the oldest issues.

SHARING EXPERIENCES

I was invited by PMP staff to pick up a column called “Conversation Piece,” which interviewed pests. The goal was not to be just fictional, but share some little-known facts about common pests that readers can use to educate customers and market services, as well as maybe get a laugh or two. Opposite months were more serious with “Baumann’s Vantage Point,” where current topics were addressed — from Safety Data Sheet revisions to COVID to regulatory issues outside of the normal path of the industry. While I had written columns for PMP periodically in the past, these new columns were novel and fun.

When asked to write these columns by PMP staff, I jumped at the chance, as I enjoy writing and love to share experiences with the industry. All of us sharing with one another creates a stronger industry. There was never a shortage of topics for either column.

While we expected this experience to go one year, we now are finishing year three of both columns. It is now time to retire these columns and pave a way for other creative industry leaders to contribute to PMP.
I still plan to write some special features for the magazine, but I also believe that after three years, it is time for other viewpoints. This allows me to focus on industry-related activities, including some recent appointments to leadership in organizations in Washington, D.C., as well as one of my proudest appointments, which is to the Advisory Council of the Atlantic Legal Foundation. In these roles, not only will the company I work for be represented, but they will open doors to ensure the interests of our industry are addressed.

EMBRACING NEW RESPONSIBILITIES

I want to express my appreciation to Melissa McCoy, who helped edit my columns and make the drafts better prior to sending to PMP. The kindness and professionalism of the PMP staff during these past three years must be acknowledged with appreciation. Finally, thanks to the readers who took the time to contact me with such enthusiasm regarding the columns. It also was gratifying how many people at PestWorld in October approached me to say that they enjoy the columns. While these columns will end, PMP’s content as it gears up for its 90th anniversary will be very exciting indeed.

This is not a goodbye to the industry at all, but rather an eye on new responsibilities that are very intriguing. Keeping one’s mind sharp with creative activities is a good thing, because it leads to new and creative ideas on the job.

Pest management is a great industry. We wonder how the original contributors of the nearly century-old Exterminators Log would see us today. Likely, they would appreciate such a modern and professional industry, one that sometimes still has to address challenges that they also faced.

With that, until we meet again, “so long and thanks for all the fish.” Look it up.

Build your brand identity

Photo: ABC Home & Commercial Services

The ABC Anteater logo is a common sight at local sports fields. Photo: ABC Home & Commercial Services

Pest Management Professional asks its columnists and editorial advisory board members every month for responses to its “Question of the Month.” You can see this month’s section on p. 10. The November issue’s question, though — “What’s a good way to give your brand identity more exposure in your community?” — really made me take inventory of all the good ideas I’ve implemented at my company, as well as what I’ve seen work for several of my colleagues. Shockingly, I had more to say about this than just a couple of sentences, so the editors encouraged me to put forth more of my thoughts on the topic here.

BEST FOOT FORWARD

Start building your identity by marking your truck with your brand. I love seeing trucks that are well marked and clean at all times. This, coupled with the way you drive (courtesy counts), will make an impression on your customers and their neighbors. Be sure to park at each customer’s house in a manner that the neighbors will see.

Your personal appearance makes a difference, too. Wearing a clean uniform with company name and logo, and being clean-cut and presentable — no visible tattoos, for example — will make everyone love having you in their homes and give them good stories to tell their neighbors. Of course, if you have grown to working in an office as opposed to your home, make sure you have as big of a sign as you can. Ensure that the grounds of the office are well maintained so that everyone notices you. Put flowers in landscaping beds to draw the eye.

Dennis Jenkins

Dennis Jenkins

With vehicle and self/headquarters taken care of, the third part of the professional branding trifecta is your website. Get it registered with Google. Your location is important, because when people search for pest control, Google normally adds “near me.” If you are not registered by location, your company will not show up. You also can mark a service area if you want to service areas outside of “near me.”

BIG IMPACT ON A SMALL BUDGET

There are numerous ways to spend small amounts of money to get your name out there. Two big ones are:

1. Sponsoring youth sports in your area. While times have changed and prices have increased, this is still a great way to put your name out there. It is also a really good way to help your community.

First, make sure your company name is on all team uniforms. Also, inquire as to what level of sponsorship includes a sign on the field. Some signs may be banners put up for games, whereas in other cases you might be able to get a permanent sign on the field. (This has been my experience with baseball sponsorships especially.)

We have long sponsored teams in soccer and baseball. Eventually, we grew to be able to get signs hung in several local high school gymnasiums and on football field scoreboards that are there year-round.

2. Donating services to those in need. Begin with your church or a local charity that will give you exposure. Ask whether you can at least be introduced to the leadership, so your story of generosity begins to spread. To expand from there, look at local charities and donate your service there, being sure to ask for exposure and that all people who work there or are served there will see your name — such as on a plaque with your company name on it as they walk in.

If the charity has a marketing contact, work with them to send a news release about the donation to get both the charity’s name and yours out into the public. I realize there are many people out there who prefer to donate anonymously, which is fine to do as well. But keep in mind that many customers and employees like to be associated with companies that give generously. It shows your company has integrity and compassion, and can perhaps lead others to be more generous with their time, talent and treasure, as well.

As you grow, you can add more traditional advertising such as web pay-per-clicks (PPC), or radio or TV, assuming these platforms work in your markets.

NYC hires PMP as ‘rat czar’

Photo: Katie Dobies/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Photo: Katie Dobies/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Ernie Schicchi has been hired as New York City’s “rat czar” to deal with the overridden population of rats in the city.

Mayor Eric Adams posted the job on Dec. 1 for the role also known as the citywide director of rodent mitigation.

Schicchi has spent 27 years in pest control and focused on rats for the last 15 years. The bad news for humans, the 50-year-old from Freehold, N.J., told The New York Post, is that “rats are very smart, very resourceful and they learn very quickly.”

As to why they are raging more than ever in New York City, Schicchi, co-owner of Alternative Pest Control in Brooklyn, blames the pandemic.

“When COVID hit and restaurants closed, garbage stopped being set out and rats lost food sources,” he said. “So they fed off of garbage in residential neighborhoods. Now that restaurants are open again, they [eat] from both.”

The job posting from the mayor’s office promised a paycheck of between $120,000 and $170,000 and listed key skills and background in urban planning, project management, or government work as requirements, according to Meaww. The rodent population has increased over the years and it has become a daunting task to control the rats.

Here are five insights Schicchi gave The New York Post about rats:

1. Rats go where humans won’t. While rats are similar to humans in body makeup, with matching internal organs and a skeleton, they lack one of our primary fears.

“Rats do not get claustrophobic,” Schicchi told The New York Post. “They enter very small spaces and are comfortable.”

They also thrive in places that we avoid.

2. Rats follow the food.

“The key to any rat’s life is establishing a consistent food source,” said Schicchi. “They do not scavenge.”

So when these rodents find a good spot for feeding, they stay put. Even worse, they keep populating.

“When you have a rat family and the pups become teenagers, they get kicked out by the dominant male. The dominant male will continue fathering litters — female rats usually give birth to around five babies every 21 days — and keep the offspring alive as long as there is enough food to go around,” Schicchi said. “If there isn’t, the mother or father bites the babies and kills the litter to prevent a shortage of food. They have no issues about being around their dead offspring — or eating them if need be.”

As much as rats love food, they hate bleach. Schicchi’s advice: “Spray the inside and outside of your garbage bag with bleach. The scent tells them it is poisonous. They can’t regurgitate and need to be careful of what they eat. Rats will not chew through bleach covered bags and will leave to find fresh food sources.”

3. Rats learn fast and communicate well. Rats acquire information via smell. “When rats urinate, they communicate,” said Schicchi. “Smells tell them who is sick, who is old, who is in heat. It’s laid out via pheromones. That is why you get rid of rats one day and a new group moves in the next day. They smell the pheromones from the previous rats, see no activity and figure that the spot is up for grabs.”

Schicchi told the Post that he shuts down communication channels by spraying Bac-A-Zap, a product manufactured by Nisus that eliminates strong odors.

More difficult to control is the way in which rats learn to survive. “Set out a bait station, load it with poison and rats in need of food may go there. Dominant rats will watch them. They will take note of what happens to the other rats. If rats eat from the bait station and get sick or die, the dominant rats avoid it.”

One work-around, Schicchi added, is to change up the bait: “I go from oil- to flour- to grain-base on a week to weekly basis. And to entice the smarter rats, I’ll add their droppings.”

4. Rats can chew through almost anything.

“Their teeth are rated between steel and iron,” said Schicchi. “They can chew through concrete.”

The good news is that they probably will not chew through human skin: “In a rat’s mind, almost everything is predatory; they deal with us cautiously and will not attack.”

Still, they can penetrate most barriers. One brownstone owner in Brooklyn who hired Schicchi said she had rats “living between our front steps, the floor of our garden level and the basement. Schicchi saw the grease marks of where they were traveling. He went into the basement ceiling and sealed off entry points with steel mesh. Finally he laid down pieces of plastic. If they were disturbed, it would mean the rats were somehow getting around the mesh.”

There is good reason why rats don’t mess with wire mesh, he said: “If rats try chewing through it, it cuts up their mouths. They also can’t chew through copper wire mesh and diamond mesh steel. Aluminum and alloy, both of those they can chew through. Regular old chicken wire? Forget about it. They go right through chicken wire.”

5. NYC is fighting a losing battle.

“New York City will not win,” Schicchi said of the war being waged against the rodents. “Too much has to happen everywhere at once. The rats are going to win.”

Create cleaning and disinfecting protocols for customers

Casey Prewitt

Casey Prewitt

When we as an industry were asked to protect our customers from an invisible threat, we developed cleaning protocols, safety protocols and applied products we have never purchased before. Two years later, most of us have settled back into our normal revenue-generating pest control — while missing out on implementing those same cleaning procedures into our pest prevention programs.

Take the common pests we deal with daily: rodents, cockroaches and flies. Each is distinctly different in makeup, but all three thrive on unclean conditions and leave the areas they occupy unsanitary. When fine-tuning your integrated pest management (IPM) procedures, develop cleaning and disinfecting protocols for your customers. This is a great opportunity for generating new revenue. More importantly, you are making your job easier to control pest problems when they occur.

Cleaning and disinfecting work areas, storage areas and drain systems help eliminate harborage areas, ultimately helping to prevent future pest challenges.

Before eliminating cleaning and disinfecting protocols from your program, explore how keeping them on could boost your revenue and success.

Terminix Service celebrates 75th anniversary

LOGO: TERMINIX SERVICE

This fall, Columbia, S.C.-based Terminix Service, a family-owned and -operated business, marked its 75th anniversary.

While the company and pest control industry have evolved over the past seven decades, Terminix Service credits its founding principles as the primary drivers for its continued success.

“In 1947, my grandfather founded this company around several key principles, and those remain the central focus of how we do business today,” said Lex Knox, Terminix Service chairman and CEO and a 50-year employee. “We’ve maintained a primary commitment to delivering quality service to exceed our customers’ expectations, and that’s made possible by recruiting, continually training, and retaining the best team possible. And our dedication to enhancing the communities where we work has allowed us to have a meaningful impact across our service area.”

Terminix Service’s business has grown significantly since 1947. The company now covers western North Carolina and the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), a trading and marketing region spanning 14 counties in Georgia and seven in South Carolina. It is also has customers throughout South Carolina. Overall, it serves more than 250,000 customers from 56 branch locations.

“Our industry has seen tremendous change over the last 75 years, and I’m proud of how we’ve evolved to meet the needs of both our customers and employees,” said Tommy Fortson, vice chairman. “Investments in technology, operations, and most importantly our people, is a commitment we made early on and continue today.”

In 2019, Terminix Service debuted a new corporate office and leadership center to further its commitment to industry-leading training for onboarding and continuing education supporting personal and professional development. The company also continued its focus on industry-leading service with adding a 4,200-square-foot training house to provide field employees with hands-on, technical training starting the first week of employment. With more than 1,100 employees – nearly half of whom have been with the company for more than five years – Terminix Service is regularly recognized by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and Business NC Magazine as a top employer and best place to work.

“At its core, Terminix Service, Inc. is a family business, and our culture and commitment to training enables us to deliver the best quality service to our customers,” said Rion Cobb, vice president of human services. “Reaching this milestone and growing our business over the past 75 years wouldn’t be possible without the support and dedication of our extended family of employees. We thank them for their commitment to our company and the customers we serve.”

With a mission to provide services that protect and enhance the living and working environments of its customers and communities, Terminix Service’s impact has never stopped there. Over the years, Terminix Service has invested in local communities through partnerships with Habitat for Humanity, The American Red Cross, animal advocacy groups, and more, as well as sponsorships at Clemson University and the University of South Carolina. The company also maintains a leadership commitment within the pest control industry and signified this support through a $1 million gift to launch the Urban Entomology Initiative at Clemson University.

“Building meaningful connections within our industry and the communities we serve has been a part of our company values since 1947,” said Scott Fortson, president. “We’re extremely fortunate to be in a position to give back to the community and remain committed to making an impact throughout our service area as we continue to grow as a business.”

NaturZone donates $10K to Feeding Tampa Bay

LOGO: NATURZONE

In November, Sarasota, Fla.-based NaturZone Pest Control donated $10,000 for the third consecutive year to Feeding Tampa Bay, a local organization whose goal is for the city to be hunger-free by 2025. Its mission is to not only distribute food, but to train and develop skills for individuals with barriers to employment. Its FRESHforce program offers participants three job tracks: culinary school, logistics training and truck driving: “We endeavor to move people beyond the vicious cycle of hunger, educating them and offering skills they need to unlock their path to self-sufficiency.”

“We want to give back to those in need, and our partnership with Feeding Tampa Bay seemed like the perfect fit,” NaturZone Managing Partner Andrew Longfellow said in a news release. “We are impressed that 98 cents of every dollar donated goes to helping those in need. And between recovering from the pandemic and Hurricane Ian, people are in more need than ever.”

NaturZone President Doug Longfellow agrees, telling Pest Management Professional, “Our main motivation for picking this charity is that nothing is more fundamental that feeding people. We appreciate that FTB also has programs to help with the underlying issues with food insecurity, such as job training, mental health help and other programs to lift people out of poverty.
