AAC Distributing: XclusionPro Super Sealant Ultra Clear Cold Weather Formula

IMAGE: AAC DISTRIBUTING

IMAGE: AAC DISTRIBUTING

Made in the USA, new XclusionPro Super Sealant Ultra Clear Cold Weather Formula was designed specifically with exclusion work of large insects, as well as rodents and other wildlife, in mind. It offers a short skim time and is paintable. The sealant works best under 55 degrees Fahrenheit, and even performs well in freezing temperatures. It is available as 30 tubes per case, and 24 cases per pallet.

About AAC Distributing

AAC Distributing was founded in December 2016 by the Siri family as a distribution company specializing in American-made products for the wildlife control industry. The Siri family owned and operated a wildlife removal company for many years. During that time, AAC Distributing was formed due to offer high quality, durable and effective exclusion products. Armed with the knowledge of an experienced wildlife control operator (WCOS), Tony Siri fabricated a product to keep animals, bats, birds and insects out of the ridge vent of homes without obstructing proper airflow. This product, now known as RIDGE-GUARD, is considered by many WCOs to be a “game changer” for exclusion work. Since then, the Siri family and their trusted team members have developed their XclusionPro line, which includes XclusionPro XP, XclusionPro XL, XclusionPro BVG, XclusionPro FVG, XclusionPro LVG, XclusionPro FAD, XclusionPro SignWrap, XclusionPro Super Sealant, and many more custom solutions and products.

The AAC Distributing team continues to research and develop new and innovative products that will solve structural problems for WCOs and pest management professionals (PMPs). In addition, they focus on educating and training business owners across the nation on exclusion work and sales techniques.

Treating multi-queen species infestations

Greg Pettis

Greg Pettis

As a pest management professional (PMP), I can remember back in the mid-1990s when multi-queen ant colonies became more of a problem in the northeastern U.S. Not understanding the complexity of these types of ants, it is easy to experience the phenomenon of colony fracturing, or “budding.” Already-complex infestations can worsen overnight when treated with repellents indoors.

Instead, we must think in 3D with multi-queen species infestations, such as Argentine (Linepithema humile), pharaoh and many carpenter ant species. Keep in mind they can be made up of several satellite colonies that are a part of a greater super colony, where about 5 percent of them “visit the cousins” on a regular basis.

Back in the day with multi-queen colony infestations, we often got away with just treating the areas where ants were sighted indoors. It was a matter of out of sight, out of mind. But unless we address all the colonies and all the entry points, the game continues. With colonies almost always originating outside, applications to the foundation and even the yard should be considered.

Stop ants in attics

Chris White

Chris White

The attic provides an ideal environment for ants — thanks to its secluded nature, ample food sources and suitable nesting sites.

One of the top issues in attic infestations is that ants are known to damage insulation materials by tunneling through them or using them as nesting material. To stop these invaders, it’s important to understand the species in your area and apply exclusion to anywhere they are known to get in. It’s also important to treat potential access areas with a suitable residual insecticide, such as boric acid.

Treat ants with non-repellent pesticides

Andy Linares

Andy Linares, President/Founder, Bug Off Pest Control Center

All the data points to the fact that ants are the No. 1 economic pest in the United States. But that’s not the case in certain markets, like the New York City Metropolitan area, where the German cockroach is still king.

Still, ant pressure has been building here for years and new species have taken hold. Once upon a time, all we basically had to deal with were pavement ants, pharaoh ants and carpenter ants. Now, OHA and ghost ants (Tapinoma melanocephalum) have joined those species as common pests — with the white-footed ant (Technomyrmex difficilis) also popping up periodically. As a result, PMPs have had to improve their skills and elevate their knowledge of this remarkable pest.

Most of these new species are tramp ants with a predisposition to bud. That makes them formidable foes because they can have multiple queens, broad food preferences and a great variety of nesting choices.

My ant advice, regardless of locale? Be generous with your bait and focus on the use of non-repellent pesticides. Also, educate your clients. Ask them not to take it upon themselves to spray on their own; encourage them to remove all food and water options and allow the foraging ants go on their way undisturbed. After all, you want to ensure the ants get back safely to their nests so that they can share the meal you prepared for them.

Driven: Rebranded platform

IMAGE: DRIVEN

IMAGE: DRIVEN

Driven is the new name for Pest IQ, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that initially marketed only to the pest control industry, as it was founded by pest management professionals. In December 2023, however, it officially changed its name and expanded to other home service industries, including electrical, plumbing, landscaping and more. Driven integrates data from all pest control software into individualized dashboards that empower every team member with real-time updates of key performance metrics.

About Driven

The company is a Provo, Utah-based startup that raised a $600,000 pre-seed round from Startup Ignition Ventures. Industry veterans Adam Weber (CEO) and James Sullivan (COO) founded Fulcrum Pest Control in 2014, selling it in December 2022 to focus on their startup. They launched in August 2023 with 15 users, and today have more than 400 users of Drive. As Weber told TechBuzz, a Utah technology news media outlet, about their expanded industry focus and name change, “With early feedback from customers, we realized that the purpose of what we do is so much bigger. At our core, we want to drive people to be better, companies to do better, and leaders to know more. Driven embodies our vision perfectly.”

In an earlier TechBuzz article, Weber explained Drive’s benefits to service companies: “In our research, the real [return on investment, or] ROI we are seeing from customers is on the performance side of things. When employees have that data right in front of them about how they’re performing relative to how they should perform, we are seeing their performance dramatically increase. They can see if they are on target for where they are supposed to be. And if not, they can change things and see where they can improve.”

Bring customers in on treatment plans

Mel Whitson, Senior Field Technical Service Manager, Zoƫcon Professional Products

Mel Whitson, Senior Field Technical Service Manager, Zoƫcon Professional Products

There’s always more than meets the eye when it comes to ants. Once you’ve seen a few, there are more on the way. That’s why ants are such a common culprit for callbacks and reinfestations.

When dealing with ants, bring the customer in on your treatment plan. When customers are informed on best practices for integrated pest management (IPM), not only will it make treatment more effective — it will make future problems less likely. Two big tips to share with customers include:

  • Keep spaces clean and free from clutter, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Make sure the perimeter is sealed, and that there aren’t any small gaps in windows or doorways.

Keeping a close eye on kitchen spaces and areas ants will be attracted to is also vital for early detection. Remember, ants are seeking the same things we are during the winter months: food, warmth and shelter. Sharing “tips and tricks” with your customers is the best way to ensure your plan of attack is effective.

Make these goals your priority this year

Illustration: JuSun / iStock / Getty Images Plus / Getty Images

Illustration: JuSun / iStock / Getty Images Plus / Getty Images

As a member of Pest Management Professional’s Editorial Advisory Board, I was asked: What should pest management professionals (PMPs) prioritize in 2024? (Editor’s Note: Check out additional responses from other board members.)

For me, it’s the same things I have prioritized for each of the past 34 years. Here are my Top 2:

1. Build your recurring services business

Growing the base of repetitive customers tops my list. One-time business may do some good things for you and your business, but those good things are only good today. When you are making your budgeted numbers based on one-time services, you bring in revenue without growing your customer base.

Whether you are performing maintenance services quarterly, bi-monthly or monthly, these customers become part of your “family” and begin filling your schedule in months to come. This gives stability for you and your income needs, as well as for the employees you have or will hire.

Making hires when your business has a large portion of customers that will not repeat is precarious for you, for your employees, and for your business. If you can show a potential employee that your repetitive customer base already has services to be performed in the future months, they will feel like working with you is worth a shot.

Whether you are focused on residential or commercial accounts, every customer should be offered a recurring service. If they only want a one-time service, you need to consider whether it is worth it.

If you have never looked into other types of businesses and how they are valued, you will know that our “not-very-sexy” service business becomes the sexiest thing going if it gets sold to an interested buyer.

2. Build your equity in real estate

Another thing I focus on is the office. Sure, when you first start a business, you are probably working out of your home. My
dad did, and I did, too. But sooner or later you need a real office
and location.

Renting a location also is something you might do at first. But as soon as you can, try to rent from the best landlord you will ever find: you.

Spend some time in your market area looking for a possible location for you to purchase to serve as your company’s headquarters. Now in doing this, when I say you act as the landlord, I would strongly recommend you have another entity — not your business — to own properties.

Dennis Jenkins

Dennis Jenkins

For example, we have an entity called TEAM ABC, which owns properties from which ABC Home and Commercial Services of DFW Inc. rents. Basically, the rent money goes from the pest control company to the real estate entity to the bank to pay off the loan.

When you blink, time will have flown by. You will be thinking of retirement, and your real estate loan will be paid off. Now you own an asset that can either be sold or provide your family with a monthly income.

Paying rent to someone else is a seemingly wasted opportunity for you and your family. I have tried to time my retirement to coincide with when the loans on real estate are paid off. My plan is to pass the business onto the next generation and live on the rent for the real estate from which they are running the business.

In my mind, repetitive business is the best way to build a pest control business — and real estate is the best way to build a retirement.

Carpenter ants are challenging pests; a thorough approach is necessary when trying to manage them in an outdoor setting. The following general guidelines provide insight on treatment methods that have proven successful for carpenter ant control:

  • Read and follow the product label. A review of labels will allow selection of a product labeled for all possible and appropriate applications.
  • Treat carpenter ant trails around doors, windows and other places where they have been observed or are expected to forage.
  • For the best results, locate and treat carpenter ant nests. Apply a perimeter treatment using either a low- or high-application volume, depending on the situation. Higher labeled dilutions and/or application volumes as well as more frequent applications may be necessary when treating concrete surfaces.
  • Treat non-porous surfaces only in areas protected from rainfall and spray from irrigation sprinklers.
  • Treat the trunks of trees that have carpenter ant trails or upon which the ants are foraging. Thoroughly wet the bark from the base of the tree to as high as possible on the trunk.
  • Treat porous surfaces and vegetation with relatively high-volume applications that ensure thorough coverage while avoiding runoff.
  • To protect firewood from carpenter ants, treat the soil beneath where the firewood will be stacked. Do not treat the firewood directly.

Kness Pest Defense: Snap-E Color Options

IMAGE: KNESS PEST DEFENSE

IMAGE: KNESS PEST DEFENSE

When it comes to selling a quality product that resonates with customers, pest management professionals (PMPs) understand the importance of connecting with a brand; and so do the experts at Kness Pest Defense, a pest control products manufacturer based in Albia, Iowa. The longstanding pest products company, which is celebrating 100 years of innovation in 2024, offers its Snap-E Mousetrap product in various colors. Through the company’s distribution network, PMPs can purchase Snap-E traps that best match their brand’s colors. Color examples include but are not limited to green, blue, gray, and more.

Snap-E mousetraps are escape-proof, with an innovative design that ensures you’ll never touch another mouse. The mechanism is smart; the materials are rugged. Snap-E mousetraps are sanitary, easy to use and made to last. Use them to catch invading rodents year after year.

Steel and durable ABS plastic make them tough. Smart engineering — including a large trip paddle and strike bar — makes them work every time.

Kness Pest Defense’s philanthropic efforts have led the company to develop a line of pink Snap-E traps to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness efforts. The team also created and donated limited-edition patriotic red-white-and-blue traps to help raise funds for an Albia-area Welcome Home Soldier Monument.

“While the majority of Kness Snap-E Mousetraps are produced in classic black, there are a lot of PMPs that take advantage of this private labeling opportunity,” says Kness General Manager Dan Crew. “We love seeing how excited customers get when they realize they can order various colors to coincide with their brand.”

In addition to the trap color, customers can also choose from a white or yellow striker bar. Snap-E trap color examples can be viewed on the company’s website.

Prepare for future obstacles

Kim Kelley-Tunis, ACE, BCE, PCQI

Kim Kelley-Tunis, ACE, BCE, PCQI

Happy New Year! January is an important time to identify those obstacles that hampered your success in the past, and to look toward the processes that will help you be more successful in the future. Ant control doesn’t have to be a challenge if you prepare now.

Take time to take care of the little things now, such as:

  • Ensuring you have identified those ants you most commonly deal with.
  • Noting the environments in which you find them most frequently.
  • Confirming you have access to those products most suited for them.

Being proactive in this regard can make a huge difference in your ant account success rate.

It’s also important to begin providing critical training to your team on your ant control processes so they can begin working when that first call arrives in the office. Ensure every team member is equipped with the proper tools needed — such as flashlights, probes and moisture meters — so they can find those elusive nests that may be hidden within customers’ homes.

Preparing now, when ant activity may be at its slowest, will pay dividends to your bottom line later in the year.

Skyhawk: Trapmate Passive Infrared Motion Sensor

IMAGE: SKYHAWK

IMAGE: SKYHAWK

Skyhawk is introducing the latest member of its Trapmate family of electronic remote monitoring (ERM) products for pest and wildlife control.

The new Trapmate Passive Infrared Motion Sensor, optimized for use with multi-catch traps, uses a passive infrared (PIR) detector to sense the changes in temperature that rodents create when inside of a trap.

The PIR Motion Sensor was specifically engineered for accuracy, to reduce almost to zero the risk of false positive alerts.

With this launch, Trapmate now offers multiple options for remote trap monitoring:

  • PIR Motion Sensor: Ideal for multi-catch traps
  • Dual Vibration/Magnet Sensor: Ideal for snap traps and larger cage trap deployments
  • Kiwi: Designed for single cage trap deployments

The two sensors work in combination with the battery-powered Trapmate Hubs, which can monitor hundreds of traps each. The Kiwi is a standalone device.

With Trapmate, you can add monitoring to all of your existing gear, saving you money vs. other ERM systems which require you to buy special traps. Our sensors use replaceable batteries, so you never need to replace the sensor. Plus, our Hubs are economically price.

All of this combines to make Trapmate a powerful ERM system with a low lifetime cost of ownership.

Skyhawk adapters make attaching sensors to your traps a simple and quick process.

About Skyhawk

Based in Derry, N.H., Skyhawk is the Internet of Things (IoT) business unit of PICA Product Development (PPD), part of the PICA Group, a leading electronics manufacturer that for more than 30 years has helped technology leaders to bring a variety of innovative products to market.

Skyhawk has developed in its PRIoT platform the IoT industry’s only fully battery-powered connectivity solution. PRIoT combines long-range radio frequency connections to sensors, a cellular backhaul to the cloud, and a full suite of backend and applications software for sensor and gateway management.

Portable, easy to deploy and able to operate for years on off-the-shelf batteries, Skyhawk PRIoT enables new types of data collection solutions which haven’t been possible on other IoT platforms, such as the Skyhawk Trapmate electronic remote trap monitoring product line.

Where to apply baits in the winter

Matt Remmen

Matt Remmen

Baits are valuable in the wintertime, when temperatures drop and precipitation increases. Ants often cluster together in the colony, so apply baits as close as possible to nest sites and adjacent to any visible ant trails. From there, ants will collect the bait and share it with the colony.

One of the key benefits of using a bait is that a sufficient amount will lead to cross-feeding and exposure back to the queen(s) and brood in the nest sites. This will provide the greatest possible reduction of the ant population.

Note that communication with customers is key when applying baits. Customers may be used to seeing technicians apply sprays, and they might see increased activity initially. It’s important to tell them how the process works to ease any concerns. An appropriately chosen and applied bait can help control an entire colony over time, as baits draw increased activity before the AI works to eliminate the colony.

Varying dietary preferences among ants

Andrew Fisher

Andrew Fisher, BCE, PHE

Different ant species exhibit distinct behaviors and preferences; thus, selecting a bait that targets their specific needs can significantly enhance the success of the treatment. When deciding on the most suitable ant bait for a job, first consider whether the bait is sugar- or protein-based. Different ant species and even specific colonies may have varying dietary preferences.

Next, consider the active ingredient (AI) and how quickly it will take effect. Some AIs work quickly, whereas others may require more time to target the ant colony. Understanding the speed of action can help manage expectations and determine the optimal bait for your specific situation.

Lastly, consider the hygroscopic qualities of your bait, which refers to how readily it attracts water from its surroundings. It is important to assess whether it can withstand exposure to moisture and remain effective when placed outdoors, particularly in areas prone to rain or high humidity.

Aprehend: Free Bed Bug Lead Generator

IMAGE: APREHEND

IMAGE: APREHEND

The popular Aprehend Professional Locator map lets home and property owners interested in Aprehend service for their bed bug infestations — and for preventing infestations — find pest management professionals (PMPs) near them. Check it out at Aprehend.com/map, then contact the Aprehend Team to get your company listed – free for all Aprehend professionals!

How does Aprehend work? Beauveria is a natural, fungal disease of insects; it infects an insect by direct contact, and does not need to be eaten to initiate an infection. Aprehend contains the conidia of Beauveria; these microscopic “seeds” readily attach to the insect cuticle, or “skin.” Once attached, the conidia germinate and penetrate directly through the cuticle and gain access to the insect’s blood system. Once there, the fungus grows inside the insect, using the blood as a food source. Very soon, the insect becomes sick and dies from the fungal infection. In bed bugs, the process takes between three and seven days.

The long-lasting residual action of Aprehend remains active for up to three months, and ensures that any bed bugs introduced will pick up the spores and die before establishing an infestation. A quarterly proactive contract provides property managers with peace of mind, and costs less in the long run than attempting reactive treatments once bed bugs have become firmly established in a property.

About Aprehend

Aprehend is manufactured by ConidioTec, a privately held company based in Centre Hall, Pa. Its initial product, Aprehend, was launched in 2017 based on technology licensed from Pennsylvania State University. Aprehend is now sold throughout the U.S. and Canada and is increasingly relied upon for challenging infestations in residences, multi-unit housing, rental properties, long-term care facilities and commercial properties.

New Truly Nolen franchise is a family affair

Truly Nolen Pest Control recently opened a new office in South Daytona, Fla.

The franchise is co-owned by franchisees Terrance Parker and Terrell Rainey, who are also brothers. On Jan. 9, Parker and Rainey hosted the Daytona Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce on-site for an official ribbon cutting welcoming them to the neighborhood. Their region goes from Palm Coast to the north all the way down to Oak Hill to the south.

Parker recently finished 12 years as a service tech manager at Truly Nolen’s Tampa Commercial service office. He left in November to open his own franchise with Rainey.

“I have always enjoyed working for Truly Nolen because it is a family-owned company, and they treat their employees as family,” Parker said in the news release. “When I decided I wanted to be my own boss while maintaining my connection to the company, I spoke with my brother and we decided to give extra meaning to family-owned through our new franchise.”

Parker is a graduate of nearby Bethune-Cookman University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a background with the music program. He is also a deacon in his church and often plays drums there.

PHOTO: TRULY NOLEN

From left: Terrance Parker, Lance Washington and Terrell Rainey holding scissors post-cut. PHOTO: TRULY NOLEN

Meanwhile, Rainey is a retired Army veteran with four combat tours under his belt and earned a bachelor’s degree in homeland security and investigations from Florida Memorial University in Miami. He is presently working on his master’s degree in cybersecurity. In his spare time, Rainey loves to cook, watch sporting events, and play 2K basketball with his children.

“With Terrance’s 12 years of pest control experience and my financial analysis background, we figured this would be a great opportunity to open our own business,” Rainey said. “It will also allow us to give back to the local community in our own special way.”

Lance Washington, director of domestic franchising for Truly Nolen, said the pair went through training recently at the company’s East Coast Operations Center in Orlando. He is pleased to have them as part of the company’s family.

“Terrance and Terrell were fantastic to work with during training, and the two of them complement each other perfectly,” Washington said. “Their desire to help their community any way they can should help him in Daytona Beach and throughout Volusia County and up into south Flagler County in the years to come.”

Appeal to shifting food preferences of ants

Dr. Cisse Spragins

Dr. Cisse Spragins, founder and CEO, Rockwell Labs

The nutritional needs of most ant colonies change throughout the year. In spring, ants focus on colony reproduction and growth. To fuel the developing brood, ants forage for food sources with proteins and fats. In mid-summer and fall, after colonies have produced the eggs needed for the year, their preferences shift to carbohydrates/sugar, which are more efficient food sources.

A boric acid granular perimeter bait with protein, sugar and fat is a great choice for a quarterly program — to appeal to the shifting food preference needs of most ant species throughout the year.

Gel bait is a good add-on to perimeter bait for active infestations. To target the best gel, proper identification will help. For example, unlike most common pest ant species, pharaoh (Monomorium pharaonis) and pavement ants (Tetramorium immigrans) feed on proteins and fats year-round. Accurate identification will help PMPs select the gel bait that will work best to control the infestation.

PCO Bookkeepers & M&A Specialists: PCO Customer Pricing Analysis

Please Fill Out The Following Fields.Implementing a price increase is one of the quickest ways to improve the profitability of a pest control company. However, if your price increases are handled hastily or improperly, they could backfire — increasing customer attrition and negatively affecting your bottom line.

The PCO Customer Pricing Analysis is designed to help pest management professionals institute targeted price increases rather than blanket, fixed-rate increases to their entire customer bases. With this service, the PCO Bookkeepers & M&A Specialists (PCO) team analyzes all active, recurring customers and considers time spent on callbacks and re-treatments. This offering also includes the calculation of an optimized hourly rate that’s tailored to your company and factors in market conditions, company goals, the cost structure of your business and more. PCO walks Customer Pricing Analysis clients through a break-even assessment to identify an optimal hourly rate target in line with your company’s needs.

What’s the potential return on investment? On average, the PCO Customer Pricing Analysis has found 20 percent of a pest control company’s customers are priced below the appropriate hourly rate, and has identified $98,000 to $855,000 in potential additional revenue from mispriced customers.

The PCO Customer Pricing Analysis is available to current PCO Bookkeepers & M&A Specialists’ accounting and bookkeeping clients and as a standalone offering.

About PCO Bookkeepers & M&A Specialists

PCO M&A Specialists was started in 2012 by Daniel Gordon, CPA, managing and founding member of PCO Bookkeepers, which was started in 2000. As the market warmed, two clients approached Gordon and told him that they no longer needed PCO Bookkeepers’ services. When the clients were asked why, they gave the same reply: “You guys did such a good job that we received an offer to sell our company, and we accepted the offer.” Well, why wouldn’t you tell us as your accountant and trusted advisor? Answer: We signed a non-disclosure agreement, or NDA, and couldn’t tell you.” Gordon, who is also Pest Management Professional magazine’s financial columnist, decided then and there to start PCO M&A Specialists as a result. Having owned and sold a pest control firm and earning a degree in accounting and a CPA certificate, it made perfect sense for him to continue in the pest vertical.

Envu divests Rodent Monitoring System to Woodstream

Woodstream and EnvuEnvu announced the divestment of its Rodent Monitoring System (RMS) to Woodstream Corp., a global manufacturer of rodent and animal control products.

Featuring the latest Internet of Things (IoT) and sensor-based technology, the proprietary RMS is a wireless network of high-tech sensors that, when added to rodent traps, displays data from each monitor on a central RMS portal. With its integrated data-analysis software, the innovative platform allows pest control operators and facility managers to monitor facilities more efficiently for rodents and track trends that might indicate a persistent issue. By retrofitting traditional rodent traps with the RMS system, pest control operators eliminate the need to manually check each trap — a task that can be very time-consuming in larger facilities.

Envu has an existing partnership with Woodstream, whose Victor brand rodent traps pair well with the Envu RMS. Through a two-year collaboration, Woodstream’s VLINK devices are already integrated with the RMS software platform.

“As a focused environmental science leader that’s dedicated to 360-degree innovation, Envu is committed to developing forward-thinking solutions in a variety of forms,” Mark Schneid, Envu head of commercial operations, North America, said in the news release. “We are proud to have developed the RMS in response to an industry and customer need; today, we’re equally proud to pass the baton to a partner and leader in rodent control to continue to evolve and build upon this important digital platform.”

The Woodstream leadership team said in the news release that this acquisition will help round out its portfolio of connected rodent control devices.

“By combining the RMS sensor technology and supporting platform with our best-in-class devices and infrastructure Woodstream can offer our customers an end-to-end fully integrated rodent monitoring system,” said Ashley Brown, Woodstream vice president, Victor. “The real-time data the system provides will help keep facilities safe and rodent-free in a more strategic, efficient and sustainable way.”

The two organizations will work together over the next 90 days to shift the operational business from Envu to Woodstream.

Treating ants in the winter

Dr. Ryan Neff

Dr. Ryan Neff, West Coast Technical Field Specialist, MGK

For much of the U.S., the winter season means ant activity is declining. But for some regions, winter brings an unexpected increase in ant calls. While many non-native ants hunker down to wait out the winter, some native species, like odorous house ants (Tapinoma sessile, or OHA), can pop up inside homes. During the warmer months, treatment typically involves locating exterior satellite colonies followed by some combination of liquid residual treatments and baiting. However, in the winter, these satellite colonies often contract into single colonies inside wall voids, attics, subfloors and other areas inside structures to escape the cold.

Controlling OHA in these situations can be difficult, especially when customers only see a few ants here and there. To make matters worse, customers often will self-treat or wipe up foraging ants and their pheromone trails. This makes it more difficult to locate colonies.

Pre-baiting with syrup or honey can aid in locating the colony, although it’s a tough sell to get customers to do this. Once colonies are located, you can use a variety of treatment methods to eliminate them. Dusting, liquid residuals applied with compressed air sprayers or aerosol-generating machines, aerosols, or baits can be effective, depending on the situation.

Thermal Acoustical Pest Control (TAP) Insulation was created in 2001 by industry visionaries as the ideal fusion of two value propositions important to homeowners: pest control and energy-efficient insulation. Based on environmentally responsible cellulose insulation, this premium insulation product would save consumers money through superior energy efficiency and help protect their home against a myriad of common pests, including ants, cockroaches and termites.

While energy costs were skyrocketing for consumers, pest management companies were losing employees in the fall and winter due to the seasonality of the industry. Seemingly unrelated, the new TAP Pest Control Insulation represented a major opportunity for household energy efficiency at the consumer level and valued employee retention for pest management companies.

The result would be the “greenest of the green” — an insulation made up of almost 90 percent recycled paper, that would also eliminate pests from gaining access to homes through attics, crawlspaces and wall voids.
