The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) will host 2024 Legislative Day from March 10-12 in Washington, D.C.

This annual event provides an opportunity to meet with legislators and Capitol Hill staff to share the vital role pest management plays in protecting public health, food and property. Legislative Day enables pest management professionals (PMPs) to present a united front with their peers from across the country to ensure pesticide preemption is passed at a federal level so only state-wide agencies, and not localities can regulate the sale and use of pesticides. PMPs’ efforts will bring forth the change needed to effectively serve customers and communities through the safest and most consistent approach to pest management.

Also during Legislative Day, the NPMA aims to grow its political action committee, PestPAC, which is bipartisan and bicameral. The NPMA said it prides itself on contributing to members of Congress who have a track record of demonstrated support for the pest control industry. Contributions to PestPAC will be given to members of Congress who understand and appreciate what the thousands of PMPs across the country do to support public health and property, the NPMA said.

For more information on the event, visit the NPMA Legislative Day website. Registration for the event is now available.

Select Insurance: Coast-to-Coast Coverage

SELECT INSURANCE AGENCY

SELECT INSURANCE AGENCY

Select Insurance Agency now offers pest management professionals insurance in 45 states coast to coast. It also offers a wide variety of general liability, auto fleets, umbrella liability, workers compensation and cyber-liability to protect your business, as well as employment practices liability insurance (EPLI) policies to protect employers. More than 40 percent of all employment practices claims are brought against firms with fewer than 100 employees, and your general liability policy will not cover such claims. In addition to employment claims arising from wage and hour/overtime, discrimination, wrongful termination, and sexual harassment, COVID-19 has put employers at increased risk for employment practices lawsuits. Consider employees working from home, childcare issues, layoffs, quarantine and infection. Select can help.

About Select Insurance

Select Agency is a family-owned business that has provided insurance to thousands of businesses for more than 25 years. Select’s size is an asset, because the company can better manage accounts, enhance response time, and provide clients with direct access to the people they’ve come to know.

The owners of Select, Phillis MacDonald and her son, Frank MacDonald, have maintained a policy that stipulates every customer receives personal attention and policies that provide coverage for their unique risks. The representatives of Select interview their customers before developing insurance plans because, as the MacDonalds say, “Not every carrier is right for every customer.”

While Select Insurance provides the attention of a small company, its team is licensed to provide coverage in most U.S. states, coast-to-coast. Select provides coverage for thousands of domestic customers, and the company is a licensed agent for many “A” rated carriers.

Think like a rodent on your next mouse hunt

Actor Christopher Walken has played some unforgettable roles in his career. But in my humble pest control opinion, his best (and most educational) performance was as “Caeser, the Exterminator” in the movie “Mousehunt.”

This 1997 comedy classic follows two brothers who are trying to rid their recently inherited mansion of a crafty house mouse. When the brothers realize they may be in over their heads, they turn to pest management professional (PMP) Caeser and his expertise to save the day. Hilarity ensues.

I’m not saying Caeser did everything right as a PMP in this movie, but:

  • He showed up on time and well prepared.
  • He conducted a thorough inspection and took meticulous notes.
  • He collected evidence and identified his pest.
  • He even set client expectations.

Caeser’s best teaching moment, though, came when he explained to his client that “to catch a mouse, you have to think like a mouse.” I wonder whether Walken realized he was quoting Pest Management Professional Hall of Famer Dr. Austin Frishman, BCE-Emeritus, with that line?

The next time it feels like sly rodents are evading your control methods, try the following:

  • Re-inspect to ensure you didn’t miss an entry point, exploited food source, or other conducive condition.
  • Bait unset traps and let them sit for a few days to give apprehensive, older adults time to adjust to them.
  • Check your device location and placement to ensure each one is positioned in the most appropriate — which is not always the most convenient — site.
  • Lastly, if rodents have a preferred food source on the property, this could serve as the ideal attractant for traps and other devices.
