Keep an eye on bird flu risk

As we continue to emerge from a two-year-plus pandemic, society is rightfully weary of public health precautions and warnings. Still, in recent weeks, reports are coming in from all over the United States regarding highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), aka “bird flu.”

To be clear, at press time there are no reports of the virus transferring from birds to humans. However, if you count among your customers any poultry farms, processing facilities, zoos or other accounts where birds are present, take care to not step on droppings, as walking in contaminated shoes can increase the potential spread among the flock.

On the other hand, the valid concern over bird flu means your bird management and prevention services are more in demand. Similarly, residential customers raising chickens or ducks in their backyards may become more interested in protecting their flocks from additional threats, like mosquitoes and rodents.

Stay current with the latest information on the bird flu risks so you can speak authoritatively and factually with customers who may have questions about the situation. In addition, if you’re not offering bird management services, now is the time to reconsider your options.
