Service Partners: twinturbo SPLITTER

IMAGE: SERVICE PARTNERS

IMAGE: SERVICE PARTNERS

Insulation removal in an average-sized house requires seven to 10 vacuum bags. The new twinturbo SPLITTER eliminates bag change downtime, saving five to 10 minutes of change-out time per bag. Using the SPLITTER with the vacuum outlets, a contractor can fill bag A and then divert to bag B once bag A is complete. The device features powder-coated steel construction, 6-inch inlets/outlets, slide gates with gaskets to open/close desired port, and one handle on the top and two on the bottom that act as feet. Special introductory pricing is available now through Oct. 31, 2022.

Long-term fly control prevention

Matt Remmen

Matt Remmen

Flies are not only nuisance pests, they also can carry diseases. While baits, sprays and dusts can be effective methods for treating these pests in the short term, the key to long-term fly control is prevention. Whenever a call comes in about flies, remember to educate customers about the ways they can take ownership in the process. For example:

  • Keep the pests outside. Explain to customers that flies are always looking for ways to come inside. While it’s tempting to let in the nice weather this time of year, the way to keep flies out of the household is to keep doors shut, windows sealed and screens in place.
  • Eliminate fly-attracting odors. Whether it’s from the grill, the trash or the dog, flies are attracted to different smells. Remind customers to be vigilant about keeping the property clean both inside and outside.
  • Pay attention to the surrounding area. Oftentimes, flies will wander onto the property from nearby sources. Look beyond the immediate property for places where flies might originate, such as a farm or restaurant. If a property is near these sources, remember to explain clearly to customers that they will need to constantly remain vigilant.

Keeping the focus on our people

Scarlett Nolen

Scarlett Nolen

Keeping the focus is an important trait to have as a business. However, in a year with unprecedented inflation, unsteady gas prices, the lingering upheaval from COVID-19, the record heat, and especially the war on talent, it can be hard to do so.

So where should companies be focusing? My father, Truly David Nolen, taught “focus on what you can control and forget the rest.” This timeless advice is particularly relevant now more than ever. We are in the people business and we happen to kill bugs. Our people and the wide range of talent they bring to the table is our top focus.

Like all companies, we strive for growth, and the talent we have is key. Indicators point to the employment challenges many companies faced in the past year will diminish marginally, but it still needs to be top of mind for business leaders. Data indicates a whopping 4.3 million people quit their jobs in May. This is double the number compared to a decade ago. Moreover, there are approximately 11.3 million current job openings. Regardless of the cause, it is an employee’s market and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

Where does this leave Truly Nolen? Our three main areas of focus are recruiting, retention and the employee experience. Millennials and Gen Z make up the overwhelming majority of our current workforce. Both generations demand career growth opportunities and robust benefits.

Truly Nolen of America offers career pathing for every partner, from frontline employees to executives. This includes extensive internal trainers, training facilities and a complete online training program. We focus not only on someone’s industry skills with classes like advanced termite control strategies, but also interpersonal development with classes like “Pathway to Leadership” and “Train the Trainer.”

In addition, we consider our benefits to be beyond the typical offering. In honor of our annual wellness month, for example, we put an emphasis on mental health support. In fact, all partners enrolled in our benefits program have access to unlimited sessions for mental health support.

Going forward, we will continue to focus on the employee experience in an evolving world. We believe that companies around the world will need to realize that the employees of today have more options than ever before; therefore, the importance of training and retaining employees has arguably never been more important.

Other common flies in homes

Dr. Chuck Silcox

Dr. Chuck Silcox

While nearly everyone is all-too-familiar with the house fly, it’s not the only common and problematic fly species. For example:

  • Stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans) look very similar to house flies, but they hold their heads slightly higher and their abdomens slightly lower when they are at rest. They’re known for their painful bites, often to the lower leg or ankle areas of their hosts.
  • Slightly larger than house flies, bottle flies (Calliphora spp.), also known as blow flies, are easily recognized by their metallic blue- or green-colored bodies.
  • As their name implies, cluster flies (Pollenia spp.) often are found in large clusters on the southern side of buildings during the late summer and fall.

No matter the species, however, cultural control is the key to success. Eliminate breeding
sites by locating and eliminating the manure, decaying vegetation, or garbage in which fly larvae develop. Treatment options include applying a residual application of a pyrethroid insecticide as directed on the product label, or hanging dichlorvos-impregnated resin strips in garbage receptacles or dumpsters.

Insect light traps for fly monitoring

Stuart Mitchell

Dr. Stuart Mitchell, BCE, technical director, PestWest USA

We all despise pesky flies: No one wants the surprise of flies on their fries.

Pursuant to analyzing trends and root cause, conventional fly monitoring methods are labor-intensive and fuel-expensive. In our opinion, the future of cost-effective fly monitoring is through an insect light traps (ILTs) remote monitoring system.

Typically, an ILT system’s camera monitors flies through high-resolution images of its glue boards. Taken on either a scheduled or on-demand basis, time-lapsed glue board images allow an assessment of fly abundance, diversity and ecology. System sensors measure temperature and humidity so technicians can assess the conditions favorable to pesky fly presence.

A computer portal and phone app provide remote access to the ILT monitoring system. As a field tool, the app can provide technicians with essential field reports. Reports include an interactive map of client locations, the status of each ILT system within each location, and time-based notifications for ultraviolet (UVA) lamp and glue board replacement. It lets technicians know exactly which traps to service and which are unnecessary to service.
ILT remote monitoring can increase production revenue and lower costs. Through improved route scheduling, technicians have more time to assess and solve fly problems at their accounts. Cancellations are reduced, which increases customer satisfaction.

WorkWave announces 2023 Beyond Service User Conference keynote speaker

LOGO: WORKWAVEWorkWave announced that racing legend Rusty Wallace is its 2023 Beyond Service User Conference keynote speaker.

Wallace was the 1989 NASCAR Cup Series Champion, 1984 Rookie of the Year and 55-time Cup Series race winner. He will provide a “unique insight into driving business growth and success, and will highlight the leadership and teamwork skills needed to effectively build your business,” according to a WorkWave news release.

Wallace’s keynote will take place on Jan. 10 from 8:30 a.m., with a VIP meet-and-greet to follow. WorkWave CEO David Giannetto will be kicking off this year’s conference with a keynote presentation on Monday, Jan. 9, from 8:30-10:30 a.m., where he will be joined by other WorkWave executives to discuss the successes the company has experienced in 2022, and its future vision for 2023 and beyond.

“I am thrilled to be joining the WorkWave family at the 2023 Beyond Service User Conference to help its critical customer base of field service professionals build and grow their businesses so they can position themselves for future success,” Wallace said in the news release.

For 16 straight seasons, Wallace won at least one race in NASCAR’s Cup Series, marking the third-longest such streak in history. At the time of his retirement in 2005, Wallace’s 55 victories marked the eighth-best all-time total, and his nearly 20,000 laps led ranked seventh all-time. Wallace is often credited as being one of the catalysts behind the mainstream appeal the sport enjoys today. Currently, Wallace serves as lead analyst for MRN Radio — “the Voice of NASCAR” — where he is heard on more than 700 affiliates nationwide, as well as on Sirius XM Radio.

Wallace is also active in other business pursuits. In 2005, he became the first NASCAR driver in recent history to design a professional racing facility when he inked the plans for the 7/8-mile Iowa Speedway. The facility opened to rave reviews and has hosted rounds of the NASCAR Xfinity Series, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and the Indycar Series. Wallace is also the principal stakeholder in the Rusty Wallace Automotive Group, a collection of eight automotive dealerships located in eastern Tennessee.

This year’s User Conference will be held Jan. 8-11, 2023, at the Hilton Orlando in Florida. Rodent Awareness Week will be Oct. 16-22

IMAGE: NPMA

The Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA), which serves as the public outreach arm of the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), is educating homeowners during Rodent Awareness Week, taking place Oct. 16-22, 2022.

As the pest control industry gears up for seasonal influx of rodent infestations with cooler weather approaching, the PPMA is trying to raise public awareness about these pests and the harm they can cause.

This annual event, recognized by Chase’s Calendar of Events, aims to teach homeowners about rodent infestations and how they can prevent infestations.

“Rodents are known to seek out shelter during the fall and winter, which makes this the perfect time for homeowners to implement prevention measures,” said PPMA Executive Director Cindy Mannes. “We encourage fellow industry members to join us in educating the public about the dangers of rodent infestations. It’s our responsibility to use our expert insight and compelling visuals to recommend prevention tips, share information about the diseases rodents can carry and emphasize the importance of working with a pest control professional.”

In honor of Rodent Awareness Week, PPMA will launch media relations efforts and strategic social media initiatives across Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, TikTok and YouTube, including captivating content from PPMA’s Out of Sight. Pest control companies can join in by including #RodentAwarenessWeek on social media channels when sharing content about these pests.

Mainframe subscribers will also have access to an exclusive Rodent Awareness Week toolkit. These downloadable assets include a customizable press release, social media content, logos and headers, media training documents and high-resolution photography and video assets. This toolkit is designed with industry marketing needs in mind, so companies can use these materials in their own promotional efforts with customers.

Insects get in on the art at Iranian museum

Performance art is one thing, but a group of silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) took it to the next level when they infiltrated a framed piece of artwork at a museum in Iran.

Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran, Iran, issued an apology and temporarily closed to handle a pest infestation.

Concerns were raised after footage of insects moving across a world-famous work spread widely on social media.

A video went viral earlier this week showing two paper-eating silverfish squirming under the glass frame of a 1978 industrial photograph by German photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher.

The sighting of the wingless, pearl gray pests “provoked shock and disgust on social media,” according to the Times of Israel.

Insects, which may attack and eat away at paintings, pose a serious threat to the American and European minimalist masterpieces now for the first time on display at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art since the 1979 Islamic Revolution ousted Iran’s Western-backed monarchy.

The museum apologized to the public on Wednesday, insisting that the “proper maintenance” of its prized works “is of the utmost concern to all of us.”

As soon as the infestation became apparent, a news release said, experts rushed to the museum and carefully cleaned the exhibited artworks.

The insects did not damage the Becher photograph or any other pieces. However, the museum said it would close for two days so pest management professionals (PMPs) could handle the problem.

Ebadreza Eslami Koulaei, the museum’s manager, told Iran’s semiofficial ISNA news agency that experts were closely monitoring the works, because “when you see one insect, you should predict maybe there are more.”

“When works are taken out from their boxes to be brought to galleries, there is a possibility such incidents happen,” he said.

Many of the renowned contemporary Western works on display had been hidden in the museum vault for decades. Iran’s Shiite clerics, who came to power in 1979, packed away the art to avoid offending Islamic values and catering to Western sensibilities.

Iran’s Western-backed shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and his wife, the former Empress Farah Pahlavi, had built the museum and acquired the multibillion-dollar collection during the oil boom of the late 1970s.

The collection, which includes cubist, surrealist, impressionist and even pop art, has gradually resurfaced in recent years as some cultural restrictions eased in the Islamic Republic.

Good sanitation crucial to control flying insects

Brian Mount

Brian Mount

As with all pest issues, flying insects should be properly identified prior to attempting to gain control. Different flying insects typically prefer different breeding habitats and feed on different sources of food. Most filth flies, for example, prefer rotting plants or meats as foods or breeding sites.

Proper food storage is key, especially for stored product pests (SPP). Any open food items should be stored in sealed containers.

Overall, good sanitation is crucial to gaining and maintaining control of flying insects. Make sure that any trash containers are properly located and sealed shut with tight-fitting lids and are sound, with no entry/exit points for flies. Trash containers also should be located as far as possible from entry doors or windows. Maintain drains by regularly cleaning them, to ensure organic materials can’t build up within.

One last point is to ensure entry doors are maintained to exclude flies; they should properly shut and have intact seals.

Fuel-friendly fleet options

Because prices at the pump continue to rise this season, we asked around to see how the increase was influencing fleet purchasing decisions for pest management professionals (PMPs). Want to continue the conversation? Drop us a line at pmpeditor@northcoastmedia.net.

Selena Bira, co-owner of Advanced Pest Solutions, Litchfield, Maine, recently purchased this electric bicycle to use while cloverleafing in a 50-mile radius. “I also plan to use it on island jobs,” she says. To that end, at press time she was in the process of adding a cart so she could carry more equipment, and placing the company logo on both the bike and cart.

PHOTO: KEITH ROMER

PHOTO: KEITH ROMER

Keith Romer, owner of Layton, Utah-based All PRO Pest Control, pre-ordered his Ford Maverick XL hybrid in August 2021, and it arrived in May. “It’s my favorite company vehicle ever,” he says, noting he traded in a 2021 pickup that was getting about 17 mpg — and got $5,000 over what he paid when turning it in because of the vehicle industry’s demand for inventory. “What’s awesome is that Ford doesn’t require any money down to be on the list,” Romer adds. “From what I understand from my dealer, they’re opening the list again in August for the 2023 model.” Look closely for his logo on this truck: Romer says he prefers the “clean look” of a small company logo under the side mirror because “I never seemed to get much business from my big logo, so I thought, maybe if people have to look harder to see it, they’ll remember it better.”

PHOTO: DANIELLE CAREY

PHOTO: DANIELLE CAREY

Danielle Carey, owner of Moreno Valley, Calif.-based Carey Pest Management, found that just going from a six-cylinder truck to a four-cylinder turbo Chevrolet Silverado saves on fuel, while actually being a larger vehicle. She averages about 380 miles per tank with city driving, and nearly 450 on the highway. “I bought a full-size truck because I feel safer on the road, especially with the way people are driving nowadays,” she explains. “The Silverado is a full double cab, so I have more space inside the truck. I love the storage bins that are underneath the seats in the back that are hidden away, but give me great space to store my tools. Plus: bigger truck, larger ‘billboard’!”

PHOTO: MICHAEL ROMERO

PHOTO: MICHAEL ROMERO

Michael Romero, owner of Washington Pest Control, Kent, Wash., loves his 2022 Ford Maverick hybrid. He likes the size of this truck for getting around in Seattle and other urban markets. Plus, he says, it was just a smart move cost-wise: “I’m averaging 44 mpg with it.”

PHOTO: WES YARBOUGH

PHOTO: WES YARBOUGH

Wes Yarbrough, owner of Fair Oaks, Calif.-based IC Pests, is old-school with his 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche E85. He points to several benefits: “The Avalanche comes standard with a covered bed, and having the extra seats and storage is handy when needed. E85 fuel mileage is slightly lower than running unleaded, but with fuel prices as they are, I’ve come out ahead. Also, I love that the truck is streamlined and uncluttered, containing all I need without adding on a shell, storage box or ladder rack.”

PHOTO: SETH CHEEVER

PHOTO: SETH CHEEVER

Seth Cheever, owner of Over-A-Cheever Pest in North Port, Fla., says he’s averaging 600 to 700 miles between fill-ups on his 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid. “The Mavericks weren’t out yet, and I needed something that gave me better fuel economy while towing,” he explains, referring to the trailer that contains his termite and wildlife gear.

PMPs’ roads are paved with regulations

Jerry Schappert

Jerry Schappert

One of my all-time favorite shows to watch was Seinfeld, billed as a “show about nothing.” In one episode, Kramer — one of the crazy characters — adopted a road, and of course he took it to the extreme in a funny way. Kramer looked at his stretch of road and decided the lanes were too restrictive, too cumbersome. He wanted everybody to be free on his road and have no restrictions. So, in classic Kramer style, he repainted the lines. Instead of four lanes, there were only two extra-wide lanes. Kramer was very proud of his work, but as you can imagine, drivers were confused with too much freedom and little direction. Chaos ensued, and the episode was hilarious.

RULES SERVE A PURPOSE

Years ago, I was told Florida was pretty much a wide-open road for pest control service. Anybody and everybody who wanted to could get in the game, as rules and regulations were not at all what they are today.

For example, it was not too long ago when some unscrupulous folks were riding around with magnetic signs on their vehicles so that at one stop they were Jerry’s Bug Stopper. At the next stop, they were Jerry the Appliance Doc after simply switching the magnets. These folks were hard to find and prosecute, if and when they were even reported to authorities. Unfortunately, they preyed on senior citizens, which put the pest control industry in a bad light.

Because of them, it’s a rule today for all pest control applicators in Florida to have the company name either painted on or attached to their vehicles with permanent stickers. Although it seems like a silly rule, it has its purpose.

For the most part, I don’t believe the pest control industry is overly burdened with a lot of unnecessary regulations. There are a few, but with so many new products, environmental concerns, and even new species of insects, there must be new rules. Regulations do a good job of keeping industry standards high and maintaining a sense of order and balance while helping to protect the public. Rules weed out the bad apples, which is what we all want.

DON’T OVERDO IT

Still, I wonder when enough is enough. Today, there’s no shortage of rules, laws, directives, county ordinances and the like. Everything is regulated, from the number of continuing education unit hours we need, to who can and cannot use a fogger.

While I agree that without rules, the pest control industry would be the Wild West, do I really need a two-hour class on fertilizer when I’m already certified to provide lawn care? Or because I’m the certified operator in charge and I’ve trained someone in wood-destroying organism inspections, is a notary necessary to vouch for them? Well, these are regulations, so they must be followed.

On the other hand, I would not mind if the “owners” of the road we are on got out a little paint and erased a few of those lines.

Tips from the Pest Cemetery crew

“Regulation won’t help. Integrity is what is needed. Do the right thing, even if no one is watching. Treat people as you should. Always respect your employees. Customers need honesty and integrity, not dollars to value your attitude.”
— Andrea Edwards, Account Manager, EnviroPest, an Anticimex Company, Loveland, Colo.

“If you have a knowledgeable regulator in your area, they can truly be an asset. But if you have one with no background in the industry, it can be a severe hindrance.”
— Buddy Herring, Owner, Summit Pest Solutions, Mills River, N.C.

“I do not feel we are overregulated in Georgia. The structural pest control commission just needs to make sure the work is performed correctly. This protects the consumer. As pest management professionals, this is what we should strive for as well.”
— Marty Jones, ACE, Co-owner, Prestige Pest Control, Pooler, Ga.

“Regulations have a place in any business that deals with anything that could cause harm to people, pets and the environment. The key is being involved with an active association.”
— Scott Burnett, Owner, AAA Termite and Pest Control, Germantown, Tenn.

Allergy Technologies donates to Philadelphia police district

Allergy Technologies President Joseph Latino presented Philadelphia’s third police district with a $10,000 check as National Night Out’s primary sponsor. PHOTO: ALLERGY TECHNOLOGIES

On Aug. 2, Allergy Technologies’ Affordable Housing Control and Prevention Program (ATAHC) sponsored National Night Out in Philadelphia, Pa. The bed bug mattress liner manufacturing company is based in nearby Ambler, Pa.

The event is considered America’s Night Out Against Crime that generates support for and participation in local anti-crime programs.

National Night Out brings neighbors and law enforcement together to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnership; and deliver a message that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back against crime.

At National Night Out, Allergy Technologies President Joseph Latino presented Philadelphia’s third police district with a $10,000 check as the event’s primary sponsor.

The ATAHC program (pronounced “attack”)  was founded in 2020. It is different from other approaches by incorporating an initial facility-wide remediation, which lowers the bed bug population. This status is sustained by the installation of long-acting preventive measures property-wide. Early detection and prompt intervention determine the program’s success. There is also an emphasis on continuing education for both staff and residents.

Since then, Allergy Technologies and the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) have launched a preventive program to keep bed bugs out of the city’s public housing developments. PHA was awarded a $15 million, five-year contract to implement ATAHC in 6,000 residential units throughout Philadelphia, Pa. The program was approved based on the success of the pilot program that was launched in the city in 2020.

Allergy Technologies will initially provide education for staff and residents as part of ATAHC’s implementation. In the pilot program, ATAHC was proven to cut bed bug incidents by over 99 percent in affordable housing communities over two years, with a goal of achieving zero bed bug infestations.

Keeping fly infestations under control

Dr. Jamel Sandidge

Dr. Jamel Sandidge

Fly problems can get out of control quickly if the source of the infestation is not found. In commercial kitchens, improper sanitation of just one area, drain or spill may be the initial population source — but it can be extremely difficult to find all infested areas after populations have spread.

One of the best ways to solve small fly issues is to understand four primary levels of filth and decay, to identify which small flies are associated with each level:

  • Level 1. Moth/Drain flies: Gelatinous biofilms, with recent deposits in drains, ice machines, etc.
  • Level 2. Red-eyed fruit flies: Early decay, such as fermenting fruits and vegetables; spills and decaying organic matter; fermenting liquids; mop water; etc.
  • Level 3. Dark-eyed fruit flies: More advanced decay, with organic materials in a further stage of rot. Examples include food particles
in drains and cracks, under floor tiles, in recycling bins and beer stations, etc.
  •  Level 4. Phorid flies: This is late-stage decay, with such conditions as garbage residue, sewage, rotten food, mulch, dead animals, and feces. However, phorids are unique because they infest a wide range of decay levels and breeding materials.

For small fly success, find and eliminate breeding sites through sanitation, and apply products that attack the larval stages by contaminating their food supply. Use an IGR to stop the breeding cycle.

The tangled web of well-intended laws

Greg Baumann

Greg Baumann

The pest management industry always has been front and center of cutting-edge science. In the heyday of research support, the state governments had a significant investment in agricultural, forestry, land use, pest management and import research. Through it, regulatory agencies were put in place to make sure science was used in every realm, from gas mileage to imported foods.

As state budgets shrink, however, it is all too frequent for research programs to be reduced or eliminated, thus giving legislatures free reign to make more prescriptive scientific judgements. When this happens, there can be far-reaching consequences.

NOTABLE RULING

Recently, California’s Third Appellate Court made headlines when it ruled that certain bees legally can be considered fish, and are protected species under the California Endangered Species Act. Of course, the decision led to lots of jokes — and maybe more than a few comments about the judges. The decisions certainly didn’t do much to make people feel the courts are evidence-based and intelligent. Of course, today’s news is communicated by social media and without adequate information, so the ruling became a joke, albeit a legal ruling.

The truth is that the California Endangered Species Act sets definitions of areas that the California Fish and Game Commission (the Commission) may designate as endangered under the law. In the original 1969 law, there was clear authority to name certain “invertebrates” as endangered fish, and all were within the scope of species living in or dependent on water.

In 2019, the Commission designated four species of bees as endangered and thus subject to the protections of the California Endangered Species Act. A group of agricultural groups sued the Commission, arguing the definition of “invertebrate” does not include bees or any other invertebrate that is not related to water and certainly should not be under the definition of a fish. While this sounds logical and reasonable, it is a matter of detail. The law never specifically excluded invertebrates not related to water. Technically, if a mosquito abatement district is successfully controlling mosquito populations, the Commission might step in and declare mosquitoes endangered and thus deserve protection.

TAKEAWAYS FOR PMPS

The lessons for our industry are several-fold. First, any science deserves complete attention, not just a sloppy summary on social media. Dig for the whole story if it affects our industry.
Second, scientific conclusions by legislation rarely serve in the public’s best interest, as the legislatures commonly are short on science. Most legislators supporting protecting invertebrate wildlife in streams never dreamed that what they were supporting would be twisted into a broader definition so far as to designate bees as fish. Even mosquitoes might have a better chance of being designated a fish in California if logic were in play. After all, many species need freestanding water, but even that one won’t pass the public opinion test.

To me, this bending of the law by the Commission is a perfect example of misusing science to obtain goals that are illogical to the taxpayer and will cost the consumer in higher prices for certain food commodities.

As an industry, this illustrates the value of always being involved in the legislative process, and watching for interpretations that might be considered counter to the science. While protecting bees might be a good idea, and might even be scientifically justified, the science and credibility were lost in this case.

Each day, questionable science affects all of us. At least we can rest assured that pest management companies, manufacturers, distributors and trade associations are working each day to protect the industry as we protect food, health, property, and the living and working environments. It is up to all of us, though, as to whether science will be honored or misused.
