Why so many PMPs are selling today

These days, it seems like pest management professionals (PMPs) are selling their businesses left and right. But why?

The simple answer is that the current market has created an unusually attractive opportunity for owners who have spent years building valuable companies.

Private equity has transformed the pest control landscape. There are now more than 40 private equity firms actively involved in the space, either directly or through pest control platforms and strategic investments. These firms are looking for companies with high earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), along with profitability, recurring revenue, strong customer retention, solid leadership teams, quality employees and opportunities for continued growth. Professional pest control checks many of those boxes, and it is exactly what investors are looking for.

But the opportunity isn’t limited to private equity. Strategic buyers and larger pest management companies also are actively looking to expand their geographic footprints, add density to existing markets and acquire well-run businesses. The result is a highly competitive environment for quality pest control companies.

A seller’s market

For owners, this creates something that doesn’t happen often: multiple motivated buyers competing for the same business. In the current market, the advantage goes to the sellers of “best-in-class” businesses.

That competition can translate into strong valuations and attractive deal structures. More importantly, it gives owners choices. Rather than simply asking, “Who will buy my company?” owners can ask, “Which buyer is the best fit for my goals, my employees, my customers and my family?”

Timing is also important. Many pest control company owners have spent decades building their businesses. They have endured economic cycles, employee and labor challenges, regulatory changes, competition, and the everyday demands of running a service company. Eventually, there comes a point when the question changes from “How do I continue to build this company?” to “What do I want the next chapter of my life to look like?”

Selling doesn’t necessarily mean walking away, unless you want it to be exactly that. But it also can mean taking some money off the table while continuing to grow with a larger organization.

For many sellers, it’s about realizing that the amount their business is valued at on the market now may not be at the same level five or 10 years from now.

Regardless of the reasons, selling can reduce the stress of running the business while ensuring employees and customers are still taken care of.

Where to start

For owners who have been thinking about selling, however, now is the time to explore the opportunity. You don’t have to commit to a transaction, but it’s good to understand what your company could be worth and what options are available.

As former owners of a pest control company and brokers specializing in the pest control industry, we see firsthand how much work goes into building a successful company. Our job is to help owners understand that value, identify qualified buyers, create competition and negotiate the best possible outcome.

You built your company. You deserve to know what the market would pay for it.

If you’ve been wondering whether this might be the right time to sell, don’t wait until the market tells you. Start the conversation, understand your options and decide from a position of strength.

FACT: Markets change. Interest rates change. Buyer appetites change. Private equity strategies evolve. The extraordinary level of buyer interest we are seeing right now should not be taken for granted.
