CenterOak Partners acquires Palmetto Exterminators

LOGO: PALMETTO EXTERMINATORSCenterOak Partners, a Dallas, Texas-based private equity firm, announced that it completed a majority recapitalization of Palmetto Exterminators. The transaction closed on Sept. 30.

Palmetto Exterminators is an independent pest control company providing general pest, recurring termite and mosquito control services.

As part of the transaction, the selling family will continue to have an equity interest in the company and the current senior team will continue to lead Palmetto following CenterOak’s investment. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 1960, Palmetto is headquartered in Charleston, S.C., and provides pest control services to residential and commercial customers in the Carolinas and Georgia. Palmetto differentiates itself through its 60-year history of high-quality customer care and commitment to technician training. The company currently operates eight branches and plans to grow organically and through add-on acquisitions.

CenterOak Partners is a private equity firm with a focus on making control-oriented investments in middle market companies organized or operating in the United States.  The firm specializes in three key industry sectors: industrial growth, consumer and business services.

“Palmetto is a great fit with CenterOak’s focus on investing in family-owned businesses in growing, non-discretionary end markets,” said Jason Sutherland, co-managing partner of CenterOak. “As the first institutional investor of a second-generation family-owned and -operated business, we were attracted by the opportunity to leverage CenterOak’s recent relevant investment experience in the residential services sector. Palmetto has a long track record of growth, and we look forward to supporting the company’s next stage of expansion, both organically and through acquisitions.”

LR Tullius represented and acted as exclusive financial advisor to Palmetto Exterminators on the transaction.

Spiders: What a tangled web they leave

PHOTO: MARK SHEPERDIGIAN

After many failed attempts, this cellar spider has found a productive spot for a web. PHOTO: MARK SHEPERDIGIAN

Spiders are the stuff of nightmares for many clients, and they figure heavily in the demand for pest management services.

Spiders that spin webs to catch their prey only want one thing: dinner. Webs are built in locations that are likely to catch prey, but that doesn’t always happen. If you have done a good job of eliminating insects from a home, you may be left with a lot of hungry spiders.
Unlike many of our insect pests, spiders can get along fine with very few prey items. Some spiders are known to eat their webs and “recycle” the proteins for future webs. Some simply abandon the webs and build again elsewhere.

WONDROUS WEBS

The spiders common to houses may leave a sad trail of unproductive webs as they search for better locations. Male spiders of some species build webs for temporary use before they go off in search of females. Young spiders may build a web that catches nothing and serves as a quiet place to die. If you are observant, you may find a small web with the carcass of a very skinny spider. These situations leave you with many webs, but no spiders to kill. An application of the most effective products might eliminate future spiders, but it won’t improve the current situation.
In garages and on the exterior, spiders may gather around the lights where prey are plentiful. These spiders have their own hazards, as mud daubers (Sceliphron caementarium) and spider wasps (Pompilidae) will hunt them. Webs left abandoned can build up quickly in these areas.

A CRITICAL STEP

We are so often hyper-focused on control that it can be hard to think past knockdown and elimination. Still, using a web brush to remove the webs leaves the very result homeowners wanted in the first place. When you do this, it is vital that you use a separate brush for the exterior. A brush used outside becomes a paintbrush when used inside, and the clients won’t appreciate the new color. Also, take the webs down first and then apply any insecticides, so you don’t end up putting the web brush into the wet insecticide, leaving visible smears.

Taking down webs may seem like nothing more than a garnish to the main course of eliminating the spiders, but it plays a much bigger role in client satisfaction. Webs can last for a long time after spiders are gone, and every day the client has to stare at them is an opportunity to wonder whether another pest control provider could do a better job. Additionally, if clients cancel their service, they will see webs building up again — and they may rethink their decision to cancel.

In other words, make web removal inside and out a critical part of your spider control for improved client satisfaction.

Atlanta, Ga.-based Arrow Exterminators recently hosted the company’s top-performing sales professionals and management team members at its annual Premier Club and Circle of Diamonds event at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach Resort & Club in Dana Point, Calif.

The celebration started with special dinners on Wednesday night for qualifying management team members and the President’s Club, an exclusive segment of the Premier Club who achieve even higher goals than their colleagues.

Attendees enjoyed exploring Dana Point as well as many local activities, including whale watching, touring local art museums, shopping, golfing, fishing and more. On Friday evening, Arrow Exterminators held an awards reception and banquet on the grand lawn at the Waldorf Astoria to recognize and celebrate the successes of the individual award recipients.

“It was a great honor to be able to recognize Arrow’s top-producing sales professionals and our incredible leadership team at this year’s Premier Club and Circle of Diamonds trip,” said Emily Thomas Kendrick, Arrow Exterminators’ CEO. “These rock stars played a critical role in Arrow achieving the milestone of $345 million in revenue this year, and this was a great opportunity to thank them for their hard work and commitment to excellence.”

Added Joe Thomas, chairman of the board and a Pest Management Professional Hall of Famer (Class of 2009), “We have the best sales and management teams in our industry, and I can’t think of a better destination than Dana Point to show our appreciation for their hard work and incredible success.”

Arrow Exterminators also opened a new office in Callahan, Fla., to better serve the communities of Nassau County, including Fernandina, Hilliard, Jacksonville, and Yulee, Fla.

This new office will help accommodate recent growth and will provide career advancement opportunities for Arrow team members.

The creation of the North Jacksonville office is a direct result of the outstanding growth of the Fernandina office, one of Arrow’s larger service centers in northeast Florida. This will be Arrow’s 46th office in the state of Florida and will represent its 166th office in the United States overall.

“The Arrow Family of Brands’ presence has greatly increased in the Jacksonville, Fernandina, and Ponte Vedra markets since the merger with Nader’s Pest Raiders in 2010 and has continued to flourish,” Thomas Kendrick said.

Consistent with Arrow’s other offices in the area, this new office will operate underneath the Nader’s Pest Raiders brand.
