Inspecting where stinging insects are located

As the weather gets warmer, we can expect an inevitable increase in stinging insect calls. This is a great source of additional income for companies and technicians. When approaching these calls, it is important to remember the wide variety of stinging insects and the important roles they play in our environment and lives.

Most stinging insects are beneficial. For this reason, the first step should always be proper identification, followed by a thorough inspection. The inspection will help you determine where the insects are located and why they are on the property.

Trying to control foraging insects is a difficult task and can lead to unhappy customers and unnecessary callbacks. Communicate to customers that many species appear intimidating or aggressive but are extremely beneficial. Many species aid in pollinating trees, plants and gardens. They also help control other, less-desirable pests on the property. Cicada killers, bumble bees and carpenter bees (when not nesting in the structure) rarely are aggressive and account for only a small portion of annual stings.

At a time when people are increasingly concerned about beneficial insects, it’s important to practice caution when applying products around pollinators to ensure that our crops, fruits, vegetables and flowers are continuously pollinated. Remember: When treating for stinging insects, only treat areas where problem insects are present, avoiding flowering plants, bushes and trees.
