PMP Industry Insiders establishes peer groups

PMP Industry InsidersThe PMP Industry Insiders has established peer groups, because of its momentum from nearly 150 podcast episodes in three years with hundreds of thousands of listens.

The PMP Industry Insiders Peer Groups are facilitated by pest control industry veteran David Billingsly, ACE, president of the Billingsly Group, a coaching and consulting firm founded in 2022.

“We looked long and hard at how we could expand our peer group offerings, and we decided to step up our game,” said Dan Gordon, CPA, co-host and co-founder of PMP Industry Insiders and managing member of PCO Bookkeepers & M&A Specialists. “We are thrilled to partner with David. His deep industry knowledge and leadership experience are a huge asset, and we know he’ll excel as a peer group facilitator.”

With a background in retail management, Billingsly entered the pest control industry in 2006 at Washington D.C.-based American Pest. He was named president in 2017, shortly after American Pest was acquired by Anticimex. In 2021, he became Anticimex’s western regional president. Over his six years at Anticimex, David was part of over 20 merger and acquisition transactions and integrations, which grew American Pest and Anticimex’s western region to nearly $50 million in revenue. Billingsly is also a long-time member of the Associated Pest group, he has served on numerous National Pest Management Association and Copesan committees and is an Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE).

“We’re excited to bring David on board to expand the reach of the PMP Industry Insiders Peer Groups,” said Donnie Shelton, co-host and co-founder of PMP Industry Insiders and president of Triangle Home Services. “If you’re serious about improving your business and you’re open to feedback, there’s no better forum than a peer group.”

The PMP Industry Insiders Peer Groups connect like-minded business leaders to share experiences and hold one another accountable so they can achieve their goals. PMP Industry Insiders seeks owners and managers of pest control and lawn care companies who are serious about growth. Peer groups typically meet twice a year in person and communicate via videoconference and project management software in between.

Local transmission of malaria makes a comeback in the U.S.

Malaria cases in the United States have been in the news lately. What’s new this time is Florida and Texas reported the local transmission of malaria, meaning residents did not pick up the illness while travelling out of the country. Each year, about 2,000 cases of the disease are reported in the United States by people returning from trips overseas, USA Today reports.

Pest management professionals (PMPs) may remember reports of Zika virus and West Nile virus outbreaks several years ago. At that time, these mosquito-borne illnesses were a concern for customers.

As a PMP, you may hear questions about malaria from concerned existing or prospective customers. Be sure to share the facts with your customers; don’t scare them. Professional mosquito control, as well as the use of insect repellents with DEET, will help curtail bites from all mosquitoes.

For facts about malaria, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) websites. You will find information about disease symptoms, tips on prevention, and treatment options.

Malaria is transmitted by an infected female Anopheles mosquito. The CDC says people with malaria often experience a variety of symptoms, including fever, chills, and flu-like illness. Fortunately, the disease is curable if diagnosed and treated promptly. Anyone can get malaria, but it is not contagious.

Eight cases of malaria were reported so far this year: seven in Florida and one in Texas. The Florida Department of Health and the Texas Department of State Health Services are raising public awareness, taking steps toward additional mosquito control measures, and watching for additional cases. For example, the Florida Department of Health website features a downloadable mosquito control flyer that illustrates how to stay mosquito-free.

IMAGE: FLORIDA HEALTH

IMAGE: FLORIDA HEALTH

Once prevalent in the United States, “the country was declared free of malaria as a significant public health problem” in 1949, the CDC reports. That’s because in 1947, the National Malaria Eradication Program, a cooperative consisting of state and local health agencies from 13 southeastern states and the Communicable Disease Center of the U. S. Public Health Service, took steps to rid these areas of mosquitoes. The program accomplished this feat by applying DDT inside homes, removing mosquito breeding sites, improving drainage and spraying insecticides from aircraft in areas where malaria was prevalent.

Malaria is one of the most severe public health problems worldwide, and it is the leading cause of death in many countries. The “United to Beat Malaria” campaign, which is funded by the United Nations Foundation, is looking for partners, advocates and ambassadors to fight malaria. Those interested can offer financial support; raise awareness in their communities, speak to legislators; and provide advertising space on company websites to help focus attention on this issue. For more information, check out Dan Baldwin’s column about supporting “United to Beat Malaria.”

Tips to control spiders

Matt Remmen

Matt Remmen

Most spiders are harmless and play an important role in controlling the insect population. However, they can be a nuisance pest, reproducing quickly and leaving cobwebs in hard-to-reach areas. They also might cause anxiety for homeowners, leading to calls and complaints. Most spider species prefer to live outdoors and feast on insects. When they make their way indoors, they are typically looking for prey or coming inside for warmth when the temperature drops outside.

Following are a few best practices to follow to control spiders:

  • Control the perimeter. Spiders are predators, so keeping their prey outdoors is key to control. Apply comprehensive perimeter controls for general insect control.
  • Search for webs. Use a cobweb brush to remove webbing from hard-to-reach places. This will put physiological stress on the spiders and displace nesting sites.
  • Keep the indoors clean. Talk to customers about the importance of removing clutter and reducing humidity to ensure the property is as inhospitable as possible for this pest. Regular vacuuming and sweeping also will remove spiders and their webs.

Perimeter treatments for arthropods

Dr. Chuck Silcox

Dr. Chuck Silcox

Pyrethroid product labels have evolved to effectively restrict the total application volume that may be used to treat the exterior of a structure. A brief review of common label language will act as a reminder of the methods that may be employed for perimeter treatments.

Applications may be made to the side of a building up to a maximum height of 3 feet above grade. Treatment may be applied to the underside of eaves, soffits, doors and windows, providing they are permanently protected from rainfall by a covering, overhang, awning or other structure. Applications around potential pest entry points into buildings are limited to a surface band that cannot exceed 1 inch in width. Building surfaces may not be treated if they are directly above an impervious surface, drainage or other condition that could result in runoff into storm drains, drainage ditches, gutters or surface waters.

Excessive moisture attracts arthropods

Dr. Jamel Sandidge, BCE

Dr. Jamel Sandidge, BCE

One thing that all arthropod pests have in common is their constant quest for water. While some pest species meet their moisture requirements from the food they consume or hosts they feed upon, most arthropod pests depend on moisture gradients and microclimates to survive.

Integrated pest management (IPM) practices directed toward reducing conducive conditions, modifying the environment, and eliminating moist microclimates can greatly improve your success. Help your customers understand that documenting and repairing issues with crawlspace and attic ventilation, poor foundation drainage, clogged gutters, landscaping or overwatering issues, and even excessive condensation, will help prevent small issues from becoming major pest infestations.

Excessive moisture can cause baits to mold or decay rapidly, prevent the transfer of residual pesticides onto pests, wash away liquid treatments, and eliminate the effectiveness of pesticide dusts. Whether your problem is ticks in the yard, cockroaches in the kitchen, wood-boring beetles in the crawlspace, or snails, slugs, earwigs or ants around the foundation, remember that excessive moisture is the enemy.

FMC to host September First Friday webinar

Kim Woodland

Kim Woodland

FMC True Champions will host its next First Friday Continuing Education Unit (CEU) webinar on Sept. 8 at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.

“ABC’s of Pest Control” is a one-hour CEU providing an overview of the numerous pest issues that residential and commercial customers bring to professional pest management companies.

Kim Woodland, director of training and education at ABC Home and Commercial Services, San Antonio, Texas, will host the webinar.

She will discuss how professionals can provide an integrated pest management (IPM) solution to provide long-term results for these issues, while providing low-impact results to unwanted pests in and around the country.

Woodland attended Texas A&M University in College Station, where she earned a bachelor of arts in biology and an master of science in entomology with an emphasis on urban and structural entomology. In 2004, she began her career at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Dallas as an extension program specialist for Urban IPM. Her main research focus was on the red imported fire ant, but she also studied other landscape and ornamental insect pests such as thrips, grub worms and Florida wax scales.

In July 2011, Woodland decided to leave Texas AgriLife Extension in order to move closer to her family in New Braunfels, Texas. She accepted the bed bug manager position with ABC Home and Commercial Services in San Antonio. In 2017, her role at ABC Home and Commercial Services changed to being the educational coordinator with an emphasis on training all new pest and lawn technicians. In 2023, she was promoted to the director of training and education. Woodland says she enjoys her challenging role at ABC as she works closely with the licensed specialists and customers, all while reducing the number of urban pests in central and south Texas.

FMC True Champions have an opportunity to earn CEUs in selected states. At press time, eligible CEU approved states include include Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Fall pest invader guide, 2023 edition

Photo: genxtek/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Photo: genxtek/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

With the shift in seasons comes an unwelcome guest: fall-invading pests. These pesky intruders seek warmth and shelter in our living spaces, causing annoyance and potential health concerns. Drawing from insights shared in earlier publications (El Damir, 2022), this guide offers practical tips for understanding, preventing, and dealing with these seasonal invaders.

Spotting the culprits

As temperatures drop, various pests migrate indoors. Common fall invaders include boxelder bugs (Boisea trivittata), with black bodies and red stripes; cluster flies (Polleniidae), recognizable by their gray color and yellow thorax hairs; and harlequin beetles (Harmonia axyridis, also known as multicolored Asian lady beetles), with distinct “M” or “W” markings at the back of the head. Western conifer seed bugs (Leptoglossus occidentalis), brown with white V-shaped markings, also join the party, along with brown marmorated stink bugs (Halyomorpha halys) with shield-shaped body and brown mottling, clover mites (Bryobia praetiosa), with its unique elongated first pair of legs, reddish or greenish coloration, and sparsely arranged featherlike plates on the abdomen, foreign grain beetles (Ahasverus advena)recognized by the presence of a slight projection or knob on each front corner of the pronotum, and the gravid /mated females of yellowjackets and paper wasps (Vespidae) (yellowjackets tend to have a more robust and stocky body shape, while paper wasps have a more elongated and slender body with longer legs and a more distinct waist between the thorax and abdomen (El Damir, 2022).

Effective prevention

Taking action is key. Seal entry points, replace worn sweeps, and reinforce doors. Applying insecticides with knockdown power to sunny sides of buildings deters pests from getting indoors (El Damir, 2022).

Thoroughness matters

Coverage matters when using pesticides. The careful application eliminates hiding spots. Focus on high entryways like rooflines, favored by cluster flies. Treating potential entry points and under eaves strengthens your defense (El Damir, 2022).

Insecticide application

Follow label instructions and choose insecticides carefully. Opt for long-lasting solutions with knockdown effects to keep pests out (El Damir, 2022). The flexible application covers resting and entry areas of fall-invading pests.

Setting expectations

Communication with customers is vital. After treatment, dead insects may be present and insecticides might take time to work. Live insects could linger due to various factors, but treatment will eventually eliminate them. (El Damir, 2022).

Understanding insecticides

Insecticides work differently – some act fast, while others take time. Applying them at the right time and ensuring proper coverage, especially at entry points, is crucial. Heavy rains and warm sunny days might require a follow-up treatment (El Damir, 2022).

Conclusion

Be proactive against fall-invading pests. Prompt action, careful application of pesticides, and clear communication are your allies (El Damir, 2022). By embracing these insights, homeowners and professionals can enjoy a pest-free fall season.

Aptive launches ‘Pest Neighborhood Activity’ Map

This new innovation allows Aptive to craft proactive pest control solutions for every account.

“The Pest Neighborhood Activity showcases Aptive’s commitment to continuous innovation,” Leonard Carder, COO of Aptive Enivornmental, said in the news release. “As a tech-focused company, our proprietary algorithm equips our team with the information needed to proactively prepare and protect customers’ homes.”

NPMA seeks donations for Maui wildfire relief

IMAGE: NPMA

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) is accepting donations to help those affected by the Maui, Hawaii, wildfires.

According to the news release, the NPMA “extends its deepest sympathies and heartfelt solidarity to the people of Hawaii in the wake of the catastrophic Maui wildfires. Our thoughts are with those affected by this devastating event, and we stand united with the community during this challenging time.”

Donations can be made to those in need through the Hawai’i Community Foundation for the Maui Strong Fund.

NPMA has reached out to its members in Hawaii along with the Hawaii Pest Control Association.

“Once NPMA has a good sense of conditions on the ground and how the pest control industry can be most impactful, NPMA will be sharing additional information on how members can best assist those in need ahead of PestWorld 2023,” the association said in the news release. “There is currently no impact to PestWorld 2023, or its affiliated events. NPMA will continue to monitor the situation, and updates will be provided accordingly.”

There is currently no impact to PestWorld 2023, or its affiliated events. NPMA will continue to monitor the situation, and updates will be provided accordingly.

Last week, the NPMA worked alongside the Hawaii Pest Control Association (HPCA) to address a proposed travel restriction into West Maui that would have potentially prohibited pest management professionals from working on that side of the island.

On Aug. 14, the County of Maui proposed a placard system that would require anyone to provide proof of employment and/or residence in West Maui to travel to that side of the island. On Aug. 15, NPMA and HPCA sent letters to the mayor of Maui, the administrator of the Maui emergency management services and the governor’s representative on the island. On the night of Aug. 15, the governor released a statement allowing for travel to resume normally with a curfew at 10 p.m.

Controlling arthropods, preventing reproduction

Dr. Stan Cope

Dr. Stan Cope

House centipedes (Scutigera coleoptrata), common occupants of structures, can be frightening, as they have long legs, run fast, and look nasty. These arthropods’ looks are deceiving, as they are harmless. They do not survive harsh winters outdoors but will readily reproduce in heated structures.

Female house centipedes may live for many years, producing up to 150 offspring. Centipedes inhabit dark, damp locations during the day under concrete slabs, in floor drains, inside cement block walls, within cardboard boxes, etc. They emerge at night to look for a tasty meal. Preferred cuisine includes silverfish, firebrats, carpet beetle larvae, spiders and cockroaches. If you see house centipedes frequently, it may indicate an abundance of prey available, which may pose a greater pest control issue than the centipedes themselves.

The first step in control is to reduce or eliminate the food sources. This can be easily done by putting sticky trap monitors around the house to determine what the centipedes might be feeding on. Next is harborage reduction, or eliminating the necessary hiding places. Reducing the humidity also will help. As a last resort, insecticidal sprays and dusts can be applied according to label directions.

PPMA launches ‘Do Not Disturb’ video project

IMAGE: PPMA

IMAGE: PPMA

The Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA) introduced its latest video project called, Do Not Disturb, to show the public just how easy it is to accidentally disturb stinging or biting insects.

Wasps, yellowjackets and hornets are a common nuisance at cookouts in late summer and early fall as populations are at their peak. PPMA is taking this time to not only remind consumers about the threats posed by stinging insects, but to also equip them with easy-to-follow tips to minimize their risks of pest stings or bites.

“While most people are likely aware of stinging insects’ defense mechanisms, many may not realize how little of effort is required to solicit a reaction from these pests,” said Dr. Jim Fredericks, BCE, executive director of PPMA. “Our mission with the production of Do Not Disturb is to demonstrate just how easy it is to accidentally disturb a stinging or biting insect colony, and the lengths that these pests will go to in order to protect themselves as a result.”

Jim Fredericks

Jim Fredericks

Each of the three Do Not Disturb episodes is designed to keep viewers on the edge of their seats as they watch how these insects can react when an outside force disrupts their nest. Even better, viewers will leave each episode with actionable steps they can take to avoid encountering these pests at all costs.

New episodes can be found on DoNotDisturb.pestworld.org and @PestWorld social media channels.

About the PPMA

The Professional Pest Management Alliance  was founded in 1997 to grow, promote and defend the pest management industry. For more than 25 years, PPMA has served as the voice of the industry and continues to proactively provide the public with information and education on the value of professional pest management through its media relations, public service announcement, advertising and online communications programs it conducts on behalf of the National Pest Management Association.

Inspect interior and exterior of homes

Shelley Long

Shelley Long

As we all know, every good spider control service starts with a comprehensive inspection of the property to identify the species and assess the extent of the infestation. Inspect not only the exterior of the home, but also the interior, including basements, attics and garages.

In addition, a thorough treatment always should include removing the cobwebs and eggs from the exterior of the property, paying special attention to outdoor lighting. We suggest using a multi-level cobweb brush in conjunction with an all-natural dust. This will help prevent spiders from moving back into those areas. Use a separate cobweb brush that is free from chemicals and debris to remove spider webs and eggs from basements and garages.

Educate clients on how to reduce clutter and seal gaps and cracks. This will help prevent future infestations and can be offered as an add-on service.

Finally, outdoor liquid insecticide treatment will help control spiders’ food sources, reducing the likelihood of a spider reinfestation.

Mattress Safe hires Western region sales representative

Adam Reed

Adam Reed

Mattress Safe recently hired Adam Reed as an independent outside sales representative for the Western region.

He will be covering California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico and Hawaii. Reed will also serve portions of Central America, such as Costa Rica and Panama.

Reed is a graduate of the University of Maryland. He has a strong sales background in distribution and manufacturing. Reed has committed over nine years of service time in the pest control industry, with his most recent experience on the manufacturing side, working with AMGAURD Environmental as a regional sales manager, where he oversaw the South-Central region of the United States during his two years with the organization.

“Mattress Safe is pleased to have Adam Reed as our new independent sales representative for the Western Region,” Will Poston, president and CEO of Mattress Safe, said in the news release. “He brings a world of knowledge and expertise to the industry. Please welcome him as he brings our products to enhance and fulfill the bedding protection needs for your bed bug treatment application.”

Rockwell Labs also appointed Reed as a new member of its technical sales team. He is the representative for the Western Region, which includes California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska and Hawaii.

About Mattress Safe

In 2004, Andrea Poston Hancock, VP of Mattress Safe, wanted the right mattress protector to protect memory foam mattresses that did not require professional cleaning. After researching fabrics to protect memory foam and other mattress types, Hancock and her parents decided to create the company to sell the mattress protectors.

Mattress Safe has now grown from a small company, stocking product in a home garage, to a multi-million dollar corporation with over 27,000 sq. ft. office/warehouse space. The company offers solutions for the control of bed bugsdust mitesbacteriaincontinence and bed wetting.
