Like most pest management professionals, I run across a lot of interesting infestations. Recently, I was in a residential basement in northeast Ohio for an ant call. Where the basement wall meets the first-floor living space, there’s a drop ceiling. During my inspection, I removed the panels, then the insulation in the pockets. Sure enough, I found an ant nest — lots of acrobat ants (Crematogaster spp.) pouring out everywhere. The foundation had leaks, making moisture plentiful for the colony.
It was a great find, and something that only took a little time to look for. This acrobat ants infestation really confirms my belief that being a “pest guy” is not always about spraying stuff all over, it’s about looking and exploring where there may be issues. It’s also about explaining to your customers what to look for, and how they can help in the future, so things don’t have to be so hard the next time.
I love what I do, and I love helping customers — and teaching them how to help me, help them.
