The federal government is taking a couple of steps to address the threat mosquitoes pose.

The Vector-Borne Disease Network is working with policymakers to help reduce the risk of the diseases and viruses spread by mosquitoes. Formed in May, the group is comprised of professional associations — including the National Pest Management Association — scientific and medical societies, and advocacy groups.

The Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act was signed into law in June. It is designed to address public health emergencies, such as those caused by mosquito-borne diseases.

Mosquitoes pose a threat to every person in the United States, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports all 50 states have had at least one case of West Nile virus within the past seven years alone. Additional mosquito-borne viruses and diseases include, among others, chikungunya, dengue, malaria and yellow fever.

We are fortunate our industry, and the federal government, are putting some much-needed muscle into the fight against the deadliest animal in the world.
