The IT group at Rollins Inc., Atlanta, Ga., was recognized for their partnership with PowerMyLearning. Rollins IT won the Volunteer of the Year Award for their service to the group in 2019.
Since 2017, Rollins has worked with PowerMyLearning, a non-profit organization that provides used, donated computers and learning software to disadvantaged middle school children.
“Our Rollins group is so fortunate to be part of PowerMyLearning, and we are incredibly proud to serve alongside them,” said Kelly Solomon, director of IT Services at Rollins. “The real reward is watching a student receive their very own laptop. Their excitement is contagious and their enthusiasm to learn with technology is palpable.”
Rollins donates the company’s end-of-life equipment to the Atlanta chapter of PowerMyLearning. Donations include around 1,000 desktop computers and 500 laptops each year, in addition to any personal devices that employees want to donate.
PowerMyLearning refurbishes donated equipment that students can use, and recycles the rest. The Rollins IT employees volunteer with the group to refurbish and restore the devices several times each year. In addition, they help support computer-use education for children’s parents during Saturday and evening training sessions.
The group of about 45 employees has already scheduled three sessions through May 2020.
“Not only does PowerMyLearning empower the education of young people in low-income communities, but they also build strong teams with corporations like ours. The PowerMyLearning staff works hard to make sure the volunteer experience is comfortable for all skillsets and is worth the investment in time,” said Lee Crump, CIO at Rollins. “Who knew cleaning and testing equipment could be so much fun? We really enjoy the time we get to spend working with them, the students and the parents.”
