Good ways to build recurring revenue

We asked Pest Management Professional’s columnists and editorial advisory board members to share good ways to build recurring revenue. Here are some of the experts’ responses from our February 2022 print edition.

Please take a minute to answer our latest one-question poll on this topic and let us know how you promote disinfecting and sanitizing services: Reader poll: Good ways to build revenue.

PMP’s Editorial Advisory Board and Regular Contributors

Dan Baldwin

Dan Baldwin, BCE, CCFS, CP-FS

Dan Baldwin, BCE, CCFS, CP-FS: “Transition your business relationships from transactional to partnership, even in the residential market. Don’t think of your customer visits as ‘stops’; rather, they are opportunities to help provide a healthier, pest-free environment. Think about what your customers need, and then think about the services your company provides. It’s all about fulfilling our industry’s basic function: Protecting the customer’s environment.”

Greg Baumann: “Keeping customers is the easiest way: Provide the best service, and go beyond the competition to keep those customers.”

Judy Black, BCE: “Focus on educating your ‘one-time’ customers on your professional skills and knowledge of pest pressures in your area. This will enable you to focus them on the value of proactive inspections and possible proactive applications — meaning an ongoing service is needed.”

Dan Gordon, CPA: “It’s a mindset. Make sure all of your team buys into it and pitches it whenever the opportunity arises.”

Jerry Schappert

Jerry Schappert

Jerry Schappert, ACE: “Things as simple as remembering a birthday or anniversary will endear you to your customers. A card or even a discount for that month’s visit goes a long way.”

Pete Schopen: “Make sure the same tech goes to the home each time. Customers like seeing the same face for every visit, and will accept a regular maintenance program more readily if they know that ‘their guy’ is coming.”

Foster Brusca: “Embrace technology. This all starts with having a good customer relationship management (CRM) software program that can manage your customers’ services and invoicing correctly. Next, schedule price increases for all current customers who are paying the below-market rate for your services, and then schedule price increases at least every three to four years. After that, get as many customers as possible on auto-pay by credit card or electronic fund transfer (EFT). This will help eliminate long-term bad debt, and will provide a steady revenue stream.”

Dr. Faith Oi

Dr. Faith Oi

Doug Foster: “Convert existing one-time customers to a quarterly or three-season program. Our customers already know, like and trust us, so it’s relatively easy to do. We also offer discounts if we bundle services like termite, mosquito and general pest control.”

Dr. Faith Oi: “Respond to customer needs in a timely fashion, and build a reputation for problem-solving. We are not the regulatory agency in our state, but we help our PMPs navigate the exam and renewal system. I’m not 100 percent, but I try to respond to industry inquiries within 48 hours.”

Focus bed bug control on prevention

Joseph Latino

Joseph Latino

The Benjamin Franklin quote “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” speaks to the power of preventive behavior, and is incredibly relevant with bed bugs. Bed bug control strategies focusing on prevention as a central principle has proven to be an indispensable and essential approach for pest management professionals (PMPs) serving numerous industries.

Our own company offers a family of programs for affordable housing, other multi-occupant dwellings, hospitality, and senior care facilities that involve working collaboratively with management, residents, staff, and PMPs to offer multifaceted, facility-wide, preventive-centric approaches to long-term control and prevention of public health pests, including bed bugs. Over a two-year period, our affordable housing program has reduced bed bug reintroductions by more than 99 percent, while delivering 40 percent operational savings to property management.

The reality is the present landscape of bed bugs is worsening, and responding reactively is simply not enough. Bed bug prevention is good business.

Protecting upholstery from bed bugs

Andrea Hancock

Andrea Hancock

Bed bugs easily hide in upholstery. In fact, according to a University of Kentucky survey, bed bugs can be more prevalent in couches and chairs than in mattresses: 22.6 percent vs. 22.4 percent. They are second only to box springs (34.6 percent).

Applying a zippered furniture encasement during a bed bug treatment program not only saves your customer from the heavy replacement cost, but also provides a quick and thorough way to eliminate the spread of bed bugs. It also immediately provides a safe place for your customer.

Ensure the encasement is fully laminated and bite-proof to protect customers from any trapped bed bugs that are left behind. This will allow peace of mind for the total surface being used.

With upholstery furniture being the third-most popular hiding spot for bed bugs, and one of the most difficult items to treat, adapting quick and effective protocols to capture and kill these pests keeps everyone resting easy.

Wildlife Control Supplies: Batcone & Pro-Cone

BatconeBatcone and Pro-Cone provide bat removal and exclusion for residential and commercial properties. Diverse shapes with optional flanges make them adaptable to any surface or application, the company says. The Batcone is designed for bat exclusion, while the Pro-Cone Multi-Use Professional Wildlife Excluder is designed for multiple species, including bats, sparrows, starlings, red squirrels, flying squirrels, rats and mice. Based on gravity and biomechanics of the animals themselves: When the Batcone or Pro-Cone is positioned properly in a downward angle, with nothing to “grab” onto, it is impossible for animals to re-enter the cone, thanks to the hard plastic surface.

5 questions with India Unseld

India Unseld

India Unseld

Did your pest management firm have “launch an outreach program” on its New Year’s resolution list for 2022, but not yet scratch it off? If you just don’t know where to begin, read on for how one company implemented and maintains several initiatives that benefit the many communities it serves. Guarantee Pest Control in Bowling Green, Ky., and its Blankenship and Sons Pest Control branch office in Adolphus, Ky., keeps its team busy offering quality service and community outreach. We caught up with India Unseld, secretary and marketing manager of Guarantee Pest Control, who also serves as its chief outreach coordinator.

1. India, you focus on outreach programs for Guarantee Pest Control, while your counterpart, Ashley Pardue, does the same at Blankenship and Sons. How did this start?

About eight years ago, company President Jimmy Blankenship recruited me to expand the program. We’ve done everything from donating more than 12,000 boxes of cereal to local schools for a breakfast program to helping to collect Christmas presents for kids who were affected by the tornado that came through Bowling Green on Dec. 17. Ashley and I collaborate on some projects, whereas on others we work independently. She recently spearheaded a fundraiser to buy equipment for local police and ambulance services, for example.

2. You’re probably inundated with requests from all over the community. How do you and the team decide which projects to take on?

Of course we want to help everyone and be involved in everything that we can. However, we usually look for events and opportunities that benefit children.

3. How does the team balance the work that goes into volunteering and staffing these projects, with delivering quality pest control service to customers?

We like to say we always get our work done before we play! But personally, I’ve worked after-hours or on weekends several times so the “business” work is done before a big event. If we approach these projects as a team, though, they don’t take much time away from work.

4. Even with pandemic-related constraints, you and the team do so much. Have you experienced any challenges in seeing projects through to fruition?

Surprisingly, no. We were able to continue to do what we planned, for the most part. The only event we missed was Trunk or Treat in October 2020. Otherwise, we continue to follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and just keep going. Our community still showed up during our cereal drive in December, for example, and we surpass our goals every year.

5. What advice do you have for other pest control firms that want to help their local communities? Should they put an employee officially in charge of community outreach like Guarantee has, for example?

That certainly helps! But we want everyone to know you don’t have to be wealthy to make a difference in your community. Small donations add up to big accomplishments. Even if you can’t give financially, just show up and be present. I promise, you can always find a way to serve.

Using resin strips to treat bed bugs

Dr. Chuck Silcox

Dr. Chuck Silcox

Pest management professionals often are confronted with bed bug-infested electronic devices of residential customers. Treating these devices is challenging for a number of reasons, including the desire for them to be chemical-free at the end of the treatment, achieving control in difficult-to-access harborages, and concern for the safe treatment of sensitive electronic devices.

Dichlorvos-impregnated resin strips provide continuous release of the active ingredient, which moves as a vapor in the confined treatment space. Think of the strips as releasing a vapor that is quickly degraded in the environment, but in the interim, it travels by air in the confined space to contact and kill bed bugs.

Bed bug-infested devices may be placed in a plastic bag, container or room, which is then treated with the strips for a minimum of seven days. At the end of the treatment time, the items must be aired out for at least two hours before being returned to use. Recent cooperative research with Hewlett Packard has confirmed that electronic devices can be safely treated with dichlorvos-impregnated resin strips.

Tips for customers to avoid bed bugs

John-Michael Kibrick

John-Michael Kibrick

People often don’t take the threat of bed bugs very seriously — until they have them. By that point, drastic measures usually are required. One of the most common questions asked of pest management professionals is, “How can we avoid getting bed bugs ever again?” To conclude your work properly and offer customers a little extra added value, give them the following tips:

  • Check regularly for bed bugs. Caught early enough, it’s possible that a full-blown infestation can be prevented.
  • Avoid used and antique items like furniture and books. If it’s a must, check for bed bugs before purchase.
  • Vacuum regularly. This includes underneath furniture and in other spots that might easily be overlooked.
  • Seal unnecessary bed bug entry points. This includes piping holes and where electrical wires enter.
  • Keep on top of household maintenance. This includes keeping clutter to a minimum and repairing or removing peeling wallpaper, for example.

Use NPMA bed bugs guidelines to treat bed bugs

PHOTO: NISUS CORPORATION

Harry Bryan, manages mid-south territory, Nisus Corporation

When I discuss bed bugs, I often reference the National Pest Management Association’s (NPMA’s) Bed Bug Best Management Practices, online at PestWorld.org/all-things-bed-bugs/best-practices. These guidelines can help you educate your customers. In fact, start by educating customers about preparing the area for your service by cleaning and organizing, because clutter will hinder the effectiveness of the service.

Expect a second visit, and incorporate it into your cost of service. Give strict expectations, because heavy infestations require more labor and potentially more technicians. If you think this is the case, make sure you reflect it in the price of your service.
Include the following in your service agreement:

Schedule and completion of services.

  • Expectation of re-infestation.
  • Areas to be treated.
  • Customers’ responsibilities.
  • Exemptions and exclusions.

Make sure the service agreement is clear and well written. Most customers are frightened about bed bugs, so by calming them, you gain a better chance of cooperation.

Last but not least, always incorporate customer education: The more they are educated, the more comfortable they will be.

Study find certain colors attract mosquitoes

Photo: dimarik/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Photo: dimarik/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

A new study published in Nature Communications found that the colors people wear can play a role in how attractive they are to mosquitoes.

Researchers from the University of Washington tracked the behavior of female yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti)  mosquitoes when they were given different types of visual and scent cues. The mosquitoes were put into small test chambers and exposed them to different things, such as a colored dot or a person’s hand.

Mosquitoes find food by detecting carbon dioxide from a person’s breath, which prompts them to scan for certain colors and visual patterns that could indicate food.

Where there was no odor in the rest chambers, mosquitoes ignored the  colored dot, not matter what color it was. When researchers sprayed carbon dioxide in the chamber, however, the mosquitoes were most attracted to the colors red, orange, black and cyan (a blue-green shade). Dot colors that the mosquitoes ignored were green, blue and purple.

The study did not say why mosquitoes were attracted to certain colors. However, a theory is that red is one of the shades mosquitoes see when looking at human skin, according to Yahoo Life.

“When light interacts with human skin, regardless of skin pigmentation, it reflects a reddish color,” Dr. Nancy Troyano, a board-certified entomologist and director of operations education and training with Ehrlich Pest Control, told Yahoo Life. “Therefore the color red may be one of several cues that mosquitoes use to help them to locate their host.”

It can also be assumed mosquitoes are attracted the color red since it is the color of blood, but Timothy Best, ACE, BCE, technical manager at Terminix, told Yahoo Life that it’s “unlikely.”

As for the colors of orange, black and cyan, those colors tend to be darker, which mosquitoes like, Best said.

“Light colors are perceived as a threat to mosquitoes, which is why many species avoid biting in direct sunlight,” Best said.

Although mosquitoes are attracted to certain colors, the researchers said, it doesn’t mean to avoid wearing certain colors during mosquito season.

Mosquitoes are attracted to people for a combination of several factors, including sweat, carbon dioxide, heat and visual cues. However, if going to an area with lots of mosquitoes, people should stick to lighter colors.

“Dark colors stand out to mosquitoes, whereas light colors blend in,” Best told Yahoo Life. “People should consider lighter colors as an additional means of possibly reducing bites.”

Growth merits another building

PHOTO: PETE SCHOPEN

The new building that the Schopen Pest Solutions’ corporate team will call home. PHOTO: PETE SCHOPEN

To borrow a line from the recently freed Britney Spears: “Oops… I did it again!”

I bought another building.

Four years ago, we outgrew a rental property in Lakemoor, Ill., so we purchased an 8,000-square-foot building for our trucks and 12 employees. Fast-forward 48 months, with nearly three times as many employees, and we outgrew another building. Therefore, I started looking for a place to house my corporate team and free up some much-needed space in our McHenry, Ill., office.

ROOM TO GROW

Pete Schopen

Pete Schopen, owner
and founder, Schopen Pest Solution

Because we grow our company at a 25 percent clip year after year, I am anticipating adding at least eight additional employees this year: six techs, one office staffer and a full-time human resources person. That will push us past 40 employees. We could never comfortably fit that many people into our current location, so last summer, I started looking for a solution to my overcrowding problem.

In October, we almost bought at an auction a 12,000-square-foot building on two acres. It was a gorgeous building, and it was cheap: It sold for $179,000. But the thought of renovating and maintaining a building that big was intimidating. Also, I love my current building, and I didn’t want to transfer my entire staff to another structure. Therefore, I compromised and bought a smaller, 2,600-square-foot building to use for our corporate team, and I will leave most of our other staff members at our current location.

There is an interesting problem in American business right now, and I’m not talking about my disastrous decision to buy Digital World Acquisition Corp. stock. According to a Gallup News poll, 25 percent of the American workforce is still working from home full-time, and another
20 percent are only coming into the office part-time. Thus, commercial real estate isn’t in demand and is much easier to get than residential properties. With fewer people renting commercial buildings, owners are forced to sell — but not at the prices they want. I used this to my advantage and snagged a decent property for $30,000 less than the asking price.

PURCHASING DECISIONS

If you haven’t bought a building before, there are several factors to consider, including:

  • Location, location, location. While it’s true that we don’t have a lot of foot traffic in pest control, it still is beneficial to be in a high-profile spot. Our current location nabs us 30,000 vehicles per day at the corner of Highway 120 and Route 31. Our new location will garner us another 20,000 passersby every day on Highway 120. That’s a lot of people seeing a big, beautiful Schopen Pest Solutions sign!
  • Initial deposit. In most cases, you need to put down at least 20 percent toward the purchase price. For my new building, I needed a $47,000 cashier’s check at closing.
  • Building inspection. Just like a home inspection, you need to hire a professional to look at the structure and find the “warts” and hidden issues that could potentially cause problems. When my inspector looked at the building, he was concerned about the roof. We currently are saving up the $15,000 to $20,000 that a new roof will cost.
  • Improvements and renovations. When I bought our first building, an abandoned grocery store, I knew it was going to be a large undertaking. I bought the building for $250,000, but we completely gutted the structure. Renovations cost us another $269,000. I took out a Small Business Association loan for the building, and a second loan from my bank for the improvements.
  • Neighbors and traffic. I want a high-traffic area so people see my Schopen Pest Solutions signage, but I don’t want a location where I’ll be putting my techs at risk. At my Route 31 location, it is difficult to turn left and go north. But there is a back street we use to avoid the congestion. On Highway 120, we will be sitting on a four-lane highway that has easy access going east or west.
  • Commercial real estate as a solid investment. Someday, if I retire, my wife and I can keep our properties and use them for rentals. With more than 70 rental units in his portfolio, Charles Evans of Evans Pest Control in Philadelphia, Pa., is a big believer in buying property. Charles told me he has a five-year rule: “I want to get my money back within five years.” The 40-year-old pest management professional (PMP) loves to buy inexpensive properties, rent them out for a few years, and then sell them at a profit. But Charles warns investors that they need to be patient. He says, “When people invest in real estate, they’ve got to understand it is a long-term investment, and that they won’t be millionaires overnight.” He and his wife have done very well for themselves, and he encourages other PMPs to do the same thing.

As you read this, I’m working with my contractor on replacing all the flooring and light fixtures, and tearing down a wall to open up some kitchen space. We also are repainting the interior walls and doors. Within the next two to three weeks, we will install our computers, and should be able to move our corporate people over to their new digs.

If everything goes well, I won’t be singing Britney Spears. I’ll be singing Mötley Crüe: “I’m on my way, home sweet home!”

Sprayers to use when treating bed bugs

Casey Prewitt, Neogen

Casey Prewitt, Sales Manager, Professional Pest Management, Neogen

Treatment options and application equipment are some of the most crucial decisions that must be made for success against bed bug infestations. From small, non-pressurized sprayers to electrostatic equipment, each has its own place within the treatment process.

Electrostatic sprayers have brought a new excitement to chemical applications and, as more real-world testing occurs, have proven to bring new life to many chemicals. These sprayers create negatively charged droplets, which are attracted to the positive charged surfaces but repel each other, forcing them to spread over surfaces.

Electrically charged particles allow chemical applications to reach hard-to-access areas, provide more even coverage to surfaces and, in some cases, use less product during treatment.

Be careful when investing in new equipment, though: Not all sprayers are equal in quality and what they can do.

The biggest danger in pest control

Photo: Claudiad/E+/Getty Images

Photo: Claudiad/E+/Getty Images

What is the biggest danger we face in pest control? Slips and falls? Chemical exposure? Dog bites?
Actually, the biggest danger we face is vehicle accidents. There are so many distractions from driving that constantly take our eyes and attention off the road in front of us, that this is where the worst accidents in the pest control industry happen.

Checking a driving record, and confirming the ability to drive a manual transmission or pull a trailer (if we are going to ask a new hire to do that), are about the only effort most of us make when putting an employee in a truck and on the road. The worst thing is, when assigning an employee a company truck, many of us also issue them a company cell phone and expect them to answer a call — even while driving.

UNFORGETTABLE ACCIDENT

We are blessed because in our company, we have not had a driving incident that has ended someone’s life. I did, however, have an incident where I was the first on the scene of an accident that ended someone’s life.

I was traveling on a highway between cities, and a Mercury Marquis had been keeping pace with me. I noticed the driver was texting and on the phone the entire time she was driving. She pulled ahead of me and when we crested a hill, she plowed into the back of an 18-wheeler tanker truck.

I was the first person on the scene. The front of her car was totally smashed, and the windshield was shattered. I got to the driver’s door, and she was alive. Her hands and face were bleeding horribly, and I was trying to open her door to get her out. The door would not open, so I went to the passenger side to see if I could get to her that way. As I leaned across the passenger seat, which was folded forward, I noticed there was a blanket across the seat. When I pulled back the blanket, I saw the driver’s mother under it. Her face was split, and she was dead.

Right then, EMS and the fire department arrived and used the Jaws of Life to open the driver’s door and pull her out. I will never forget being at the scene of this accident and what I saw. The driver of the 18-wheeler said he had been traveling alongside the Mercury Marquis for over 400 miles, and that the driver was texting the entire time.

STRICT POLICIES

This accident and many other, more minor incidents that my team and I have experienced is why we instituted strong policies on driving. We require all drivers to sign several driving agreements, which range from policies on distracted driving to clean vehicles, to tobacco and cigarettes and e-cigarettes, to number of traffic violations and accidents and driving complaints. We have separate agreements called “Drop the Phone” and “Double the Distance” that all drivers must sign.

For accidents that are “at-fault,” we require the driver to pay $1,000 of the insurance deductible. All of these agreements have the teeth of termination at the end of the escalation. We have terminated a number of employees due to these policies, and while I wish them well, I do not regret them separating from our company.

While these policies have been effective to some degree, we still have too many accidents. Now, we send our drivers, those who are new and anyone who was involved in an accident or received a driving complaint, to a driving school that will train them in accident-avoidance skills in the truck they have been assigned.

It is our hope that increasing skills (over time, because it is very expensive), in addition to the policies and the actions we take to terminate bad drivers, will be even more effective in drastically reducing accidents and injuries.

Commit to customers for long-term success

Mark Lanford

Mark Lanford

Bed bugs are one of my favorite training topics to discuss. Every company has its own bed bug elimination strategy, and unique strategies generally lead to lively banter. That’s why I’ll start a bed bug presentation by encouraging shared experiences. Operators love to show photos of the really bad infestations they encounter. Some pest management professionals (PMPs) employ steam; some use dry heat; some use chemicals or fumigants. Others use a combination approach. Many PMPs also require customers to buy mattress and box spring covers.

The one common theme from all of these shared experiences, however, is that PMPs must have a commitment from customers to be successful long-term. Every operator should provide customers with a detailed pretreatment checkoff list, one that outlines their responsibilities in this epic battle. The treatment’s success always depends on customer cooperation. Do not attempt to treat the dwelling until all of the checklist items are satisfied. It’s a team effort and you, as a PMP, are leading the charge to victory.

Tips to identify bed bugs

Mel Whitson, Senior Field Technical Service Manager, Zoëcon Professional Products

Mel Whitson, Senior Field Technical Service Manager, Zoëcon Professional Products

Whether they’re in a home, office or hotel, bed bugs are a major pain. It also can be challenging to identify a bed bug infestation in its early stages. Bed bug bites can resemble bites from a range of different insects. It’s crucial to catch an infestation early, before the job becomes more time-consuming and costly, and before bed bugs have a chance to spread to other locations. Keep in mind the following:

  • Check cracks and crevices, especially in the seams and tags of mattresses or cushions.
  • Take a smell test: Adult bed bugs produce a musty-sweet smell.
  • Adults are long, brown and flat — or balloon-shaped and reddish-brown if recently fed.
  • Bed bugs can leave rusty-colored spots on bed sheets.
  • Bed bug eggs are very small, about the size of a head of a straight pin.

Let customers know that taking precautions against bed bugs can save them a lot of headaches down the line. Simple things, like inspecting second-hand furniture for bed bugs before bringing it into the house, or checking the luggage rack in hotels to prevent unwanted carry-ons, can make a huge difference.

Consider infestation before treating

David Newfang

David Newfang, ACE

For many of us during childhood, bed bugs were merely a bedtime rhyme. However, over the past 20 years, they have made an expansive return. Bed bugs can hide in the tiniest cracks and crevices in infested rooms, and not just directly on beds or seating. This makes thoroughness of inspection and treatment a must.

Consider the infestation levels, pressure and nature of the account (degree of clutter, etc.) to determine the treatment procedure(s). Preparation procedures for specific treatment must be performed properly, or the treatment could fail.

Communicate with the client about follow-up services, as well as the probability of re-infestation and the steps to prevent it. Continue to monitor the jobsite until the desired result is achieved. In accounts with a high likelihood of re-infestation, apply preventive treatment with an appropriately labeled silica dust to help mitigate any new bed bugs brought into the area.

Kingfish employee helps passengers in car accident

Michael Parrish helped a Florida Highway Patrol officer remove two people from a car that flipped on the highway. PHOTO: KINGFISH PEST CONTROL

An employee of Kingfish Pest Control, based in Jacksonville, Fla., witnessed a car accident on Feb. 14 and was able to use some of his termite tools to help the passengers.

Michael Parrish, who has been a service manager at Kingfish Pest Control for about a year, witnessed a rollover car accident in the Jacksonville area. A Jeep lost control going about 75 miles per hour, and rolled about five times before coming to a rest.

Parrish assisted a Florida Highway Patrol officer in rescuing the two passengers from the vehicle.

Parrish told Pest Management Professional that he used a pick mattock, similar to a pick axe, to help open the car doors to get the passengers out. The passengers only had minor injuries from the accident.

In a Facebook post about the incident, Parrish wrote that both passengers had their seat belts on, and reminded everyone that seat belts can save lives.

In October 2021, Parrish also helped track down the owner of a lost wallet.

About Kingfish Pest Control

Owned by Kristin Lunsford and her husband, Brian, a second-generation pest management professional, Kingfish’s mission is “to provide high-quality pest control services at competitive prices using the newest technology and training to create exceptional value for our customers. Prenolepis imparis: Winter ant

Photo: Heather Broccard-Bell/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Photo: Heather Broccard-Bell/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Also known as false honey ants or false honeypot ants, winter ants are widely distributed throughout the United States. The shiny, monomorphic workers vary in color from light to dark brown, and are about 1/8 to 1/6 of an inch long. They are not usually troublesome in homes, and spend most of their time close to the ground. However, they will invade homes in search of any type of sweet, bread or meat.

These ants typically nest in damp, clay soils in well-shaded areas. Coarse earthen pellets usually surround the nest entrance. They also may nest under slabs, and emerge through cracks or expansion joints to forage indoors and become a nuisance.

Within the nest, certain workers are fed large quantities of sugary liquids by other workers who forage; these liquids are stored in the greatly distended abdomens of the “honey pot” ants, and regurgitated to other colony members as required.

2021 reader poll responses

Photo: fatido/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

For years, Pest Management Professional (PMP) magazine has done monthly online polls as a way to get interesting tidbits and tips from readers. Some have even turned into story ideas! One thing is for certain: Our staff is never disappointed when we open the response pages.

PMP received a wide variety of responses to our reader polls throughout 2021.

The same is posed to our columnists and PMP Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) members each month in print, to get their responses. The answers that don’t fit on the “Question of the Month” page for the print edition are always included in the online version. For example, what follow are some of our most recent polls, with a link to the contributor/EAB responses — and a few of our favorite reader responses, too:

April: What is the most challenging aspect of mosquito control, and how do you overcome it?

  • PMP Contributor/EAB responses
  • “The weather! You can’t control it. Set expectations very early.”
  • “Customers have unrealistic expectations. They want to sit outside at sunset and not see a mosquito. We’re honest about what spraying can accomplish in their yard during peak mosquito activity.”
  • “Outside circumstances getting in the way of customer satisfaction. Sometimes, the populations in an area just get too high, and our customers are driven inside at dawn and dusk.”
  • “Lack of foliage on properties (to treat). Use products that have a repellent mode of action, in conjunction with insect growth regulator (IGR) traps.”

May: How do you effectively promote disinfecting and sanitizing services?

June: Why should someone consider a career in the professional pest control industry?

  • PMP Contributor/EAB responses

July: How do you set your company apart from competitors?

  • PMP Contributor/EAB responses

  • “No ‘lock ins.’ Free follow ups for 14 days.”
  • “It is our team! We tend to set the bar a little higher in our area (vs. similar-sized businesses) with the incredible people we have and our processes. We strive, daily, to be the ‘gold standard’ of what professional pest management is.
  • “We’re nice to them. Ninety-nine percent of our business is from word of mouth, from customers who generally just like us as people.”
  • “Training.”
  • “With a designated service date and the same tech!”

August: What is an overlooked survey question pest control firms should ask customers?

September: Does your company offer pest control apprenticeships? Why or why not?

  • PMP Contributor/EAB responses
  • “No, because I am not aware enough of liability protections, how it would best fit into our structure, or any other obligations it would require of us.”
  • “No we don’t. In New York, the regulating agency demands notarized documentation for each individual service by both a certified applicator and the apprentice for at least 40 hours of total work. This means a company must record as many as 75 individually notarized documents for an apprentice.”
  • “Yes, we provide summer apprenticeships for both high school- and college-aged young folks. We need their work energy, and they get work learning in return. We pay them for this work, but they do not receive employee benefits.

October: What’s a critical piece of advice to give a commercial customer with cockroaches?

  • “’Help me to help you. I need you to improve the sanitation situation, while I eliminate the cockroach problem.’  Either way, I will eliminate the problem.”
  • “Sanitation.”
  • “Clean the place.”
  • “Please stop throwing away glue traps. They monitor for the areas that need most treatment.”
  • “Regular servicing. Don’t treat once and forget about it till it becomes a problem again.”

  • “Inspect all incoming shipments.”
  • “Get started with the basics. Make sure all entries are in good working order and well sealed (thresholds, weatherstripping aren’t damaged). If there’s poor trash storage or other harborage sites, clean them up! That’s an immediate and easy fix to start getting things on the right track.”
  • “Improve sanitation practices, and reduce moisture on the floors.”
  • “Keep the kitchen, storage, dining and other areas super-clean, and check each shipment when it comes in, preferably outside. Hire a good pest management company that uses integrated pest management, common sense and new techniques and practices.”

  • PMP Contributor/EAB responses
  • “Stink bugs. They are everywhere.”
  • “Consolidation and acquisitions.”
  • “Talent recruitment to deliver services for our growing industry.”
  • “Data and interpretation of them.”
  • “Climate change and what the pest control industry can do to reduce its carbon footprint.”
  • “I believe environmentally friendly alternative baits and sustainability of pest control using more natural means will become a large topic of interest. The reason I say this is because of the abuse of insecticides and rodenticides from over-the-counter products by consumers makes it difficult for professionals to combat the pests, plus the inadvertent damage to the environment they cause through improper use.”
