Asking direct questions to best treat mosquitoes

Asking your customers concise and direct questions regarding their mosquito problems can save you time and money, as well as help guide inspections, treatments and recommendations for control. For example:

1. What time of the day are you and family members being bitten? Most mosquito species bite primarily at dusk or in the early evening but some, such as the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) and others, bite primarily during the daytime. If the latter is the case, breeding likely is happening on the customer’s property or on adjacent properties in natural or artificial containers like tree holes, clogged gutters, etc. If biting is primarily during the evening, the likely culprits are Culex or Anopheles species.
2. Are you bitten primarily inside the house or outside? If it’s the latter, where in the yard does most of the biting occur? Culex pipiens, a foul-water breeder, also is known as the house mosquito because, well, it is very good at entering buildings to feed. If most of the bites occur in the house, look for some water on the property that is high in organic content — an abandoned pool, wheelbarrow, etc. If customers are bitten only when they wander into certain parts of their yard, concentrate your efforts on any vegetation and/or resting sites such as under decks and sheds in that particular part of the yard.
