When we develop supplier roundups for a specific category in the magazine, one of my favorite things is to learn what our various industry experts think about the future of the given segment.
This month, which focuses on trends people are seeing in the termite and other wood-destroying organism (WDO) category, does not disappoint. From focusing on the customer experience to developing more targeted and preventive products, industry research and development seems to be on a good path for termite control in 2020 and beyond.
Online, I recently learned about a technology that is in the very early stages. As reported on Sourceable.net, Wageningen University & Research doctoral student Aurélie Féat experimented with various biocoatings that can be applied to buildings to make the surface slippery and cause small insects to slide off. While her research, supported by paint manufacturer AkzoNobel, focused on ants, the article noted that it could have implications for termites trailing into structures as well.
Will our industry be offering specialized house painting services in the not-so-distant future? Only time will tell.
