Were you one of the millions of viewers who tuned in to the Super Bowl Sunday night? Did you catch the commercial that featured pest control?
No? Maybe you blinked…
The ad for Quibi, a new mobile streaming subscription service, featured bank robbers wearing animal masks waiting for a getaway car that never comes. “I’ll be there in a Quibi,” the tardy driver tells his impatient pals as he sits in a van marked “Pest Control 855-247-4559.” He’s watching a show on, you guessed it, Quibi.
So, what exactly is Quibi?
The name is shorthand for “quick bites,” according to Business Insider. The service, which will stream newly created programs four to 10 minutes in length, will launch April 6. The ad-free version will set you back $7.99 a month; opt to see the ads and the price drops to $4.99 a month. The target audience is 25- to 35-year-olds.
Quibi founders Jeffrey Katzenberg — co-founder of the DreamWorks movie studio — and Meg Whitman — former CEO of eBay and Hewlett Packard Enterprise — intend to post quality programming created by top Hollywood producers and social media influencers. Chrissy Teigen, Kendall Jenner, Steven Spielberg and Antoine Fuqua are among those who have signed on to develop content.
The ad even promoted programming slated for Quibi, as Chance the Rapper chanted “Megan Thee Stallion got Punk’d” in the video one of the robbers waiting for a ride watched. This is sort of an ad within the ad, as Chance is set to host a reboot of the series that pulled pranks on celebrities and first aired on MTV from 2003 to 2007. In fact, if you’re tempted to call that number on the pest control van, you will discover you just got Punk’d.
