Smithereen Pest Management Services, through its company-wide volunteer program Smithereen SELECT, is helping support frontline hospital workers during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. The Chicago, Ill.-based firm partnered with local businesses McWethy’s Tavern in Romeoville, Ill., and Bartolini’s Restaurant in Midlothian, Ill. to deliver box meals to their hospital customers treating COVID-19 patients. Hospitals in the first phase included:
- Amita Health Adventist Medical Center Bolingbrook
- Amita Health Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale
- Amita Health St. Joseph Medical Center
- OSF Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Evergreen Park
Smithereen donated more than 100 meals in the first weeks of April 2020, and plans on a second stage of meal delivery for customers not only in Illinois, but in Kansas and Missouri. The company itself was founded in 1888 and has fourth-generation family owners. It offers both commercial and residential services in seven states, including Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas.
The Smithereen SELECT program was founded in 2001, and the acronym stands for “Smithereen/Environment/Life/Education/Community/Teamwork.” Its mission is to organize and focus Smithereen’s employees toward causes that mirror the company’s values.
According to the company, “Smithereen has developed charitable opportunities for all employees, with many non-profit organizations that provide various community services such as healthcare, housing, and environmental improvements in the communities it serves.
“The SELECT program is a training ground for not only employees to sharpen their customer service skills, but also for all levels of employees to work together in partnership. These are opportunities to advance their ability to work as a team, as well as to become better service leaders and improve our communities.”
