The professional pest control industry increased total service revenue by 4.3 percent in 2019 over 2018, according to Specialty Consultants. The Jacksonville, Fla.-based firm reports that the United States has more than 19,000 structural pest control firms that generated an estimated $9.359 billion in total service revenue, vs. $8.971 billion measured in 2018.
The company’s latest report, A Strategic Analysis of the U.S. Structural Pest Control Industry, goes on to point out that the percentage increase this past year was more than twice the 2019 U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increase of 2.1 percent.
According to a Specialty Consultants press release, the 2019 season market report is the 20th edition of A Strategic Analysis of the U.S. Structural Pest Control Industry. Eight hundred owners or managers of pest control companies were surveyed for this study. The syndicated market report is available for purchase only by subscription, sold in its entirety. Other findings found in the release include:
- Recurring revenue in 2019 accounted for 81.6 percent of the residential pest control service revenue.
- More than 1.1 million post-construction termite treatments were completed in 2019, although Specialty Consultants Partner Rich Kalik notes that he and his team “expect that number to fall below 1 million in 2020” because of the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affecting real-estate transactions.
- Similarly, Kalik notes, with many restaurants, stores and other commercial accounts suspending service during the pandemic, Specialty Consultants predicts that the total industry revenue could decline by as much as $1 billion in 2020.
- However, Specialty Consultants predicts that the “residential service sector may be spared somewhat, as pest control operators shift to offering exterior services as they implement ‘social distancing’ from homeowners.”
“In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, in our 2020 industry survey, we’ll be asking PMPs about their disinfecting and viricide service offerings, and measuring the revenue generated from those services,” Kalik said.
