Tick Awareness Week, taking place this year May 10-16, is the time for pest management professionals (PMPs) to educate their customers about the risks associated with ticks.
The inaugural education campaign is promoted by the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA), which serves as the public outreach arm of the National Pest Management Association (NPMA).
According to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), human cases of Lyme disease are more common in the U.S. than previously thought at an estimated 476,000 per year — a 44 percent increase compared to the previous annual estimate of roughly 329,000.
The PPMA encourages pest management professionals and industry members to join the cause by launching media relations campaigns, including devoting their company social media pages to ticks throughout the week and using the hashtag #TickAwarenes on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
“With Americans eager to finally get outdoors, it’s crucial for pest control companies to encourage public vigilance against ticks,” Cindy Mannes, executive director of the PPMA, said in a news release. “As we head into warmer months where tick populations are particularly prevalent, we encourage all pest control companies to join the cause to help educate consumers on the dangers associated with ticks and the steps they can take to ensure their property is properly protects to help safeguard themselves and their loved ones from tick-related health threats.”
The PPMA will also be unveiling a new consumer campaign: TickTalk. The campaign will kick off during Tick Awareness Week with a comprehensive digital and media relations plan as well as a new microsite.
An exclusive toolkit is available for download on PPMAMainframe.org, a digital marketing hub containing hundreds of custom and professionally designed marketing materials and assets pest control companies can use to promote their businesses.
The Tick Awareness Week kit contains a customizable press release, suggested social media content, Tick Awareness Week logos, high resolution photography, media training documents and a list of video content that can be directly embedded on a company’s website.
