We asked Pest Management Professional’s columnists and editorial advisory board members to share what a technician should do now to one day move into a management role. Here are some of their responses from our October 2024 print edition.

Greg Baumann: “Think carefully and decide whether you like being a technician, which is a respected role in itself. Only go into management if you feel you can lead others to provide the same service you provide. Then, express an interest to your manager for guidance.”

Foster Brusca: “Start taking on more responsibility in your current role. Volunteer to mentor new technicians, lead small projects, or assist in training sessions. Building leadership experience early with these small steps will help you gain confidence and prepare you for the next level in your pest control career.”

Doug Foster: “The best way to move into a management role is to develop and improve your leadership and communication skills. Look for ways to make your boss’ job easier and to take things off his or her plate.”

Dan Gordon, CPA: “Understand how profit is made in our industry. Know your numbers.”

Dr. Faith Oi: “Besides developing technical competencies, learn people skills and how to run a business.”

Kurt Scherzinger, ACE: “Show your employer you are trying to better yourself. Start reading, listening to podcasts, watching YouTube videos on leadership and making the transition so when the time comes, you can demonstrate you are ready.”

Mark Sheperdigian, BCE: “Pay attention to the details. Service every device every time. Make complete, accurate documentation your trademark, and take the time to clearly record your findings and recommendations. In short order, you will be numbered among the best technicians — and on the short list for a promotion.”

Sheri Spencer Bachman, ACE: “Start being a leader, helping where help is needed. That gets you noticed and increases your likelihood of a promotion. Many employees say they are ‘not getting paid to do it,’ so they aren’t going to help until they get paid for it. That lack of team attitude doesn’t usually get them where they want to be.”
