April is recognized as National Pest Management Month, and has been observed by the industry for more than 40 years.

The Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA), which serves as the public outreach arm for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), takes the month of April to encourage and educate homeowners and businesses about the essential role of professional pest control. The month-long observance is designed to honor the pest management industry’s vital role in protecting public health and property, as well the nation’s food supply, from pest-related diseases and threats.

“In the midst of a global pandemic, now, more than ever, our industry needs to speak in one strong and unified voice to advocate for the essential services we provide in protecting all that our communities hold dear — from our families to our homes, from the food we eat to the medical facilities playing such a critical role in the fight against COVID-19,” said Cindy Mannes, executive director of the PPMA. “There is no doubt that pest control joins other essential industries in the front lines of ensuring our communities have what they need during this global pandemic, and our work as PPMA is currently laser-focused in communicating this critical role at this important time.”

While many Americans are following stay-at-home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic, the PPMA has reminded the public that insects and rodents will not abide by social distancing measures, and home and business owners will need help from PMPs in controlling infestations.

The PPMA will focus on public outreach efforts this month to share the value of working with a licensed pest management professional (PMP) and pest control’s essential role.

“While we are always glad to honor the industry during National Pest Management Month, it’s more important than ever that the industry approaches this honor with sensitivity and respect, given the current pandemic,” Mannes said. “We  will recognize and reinforce the essential services we provide, but we don’t have any excuse for marketing in a tone-deaf manner that doesn’t recognize the severity of the global reality.”

PMPs and industry members are encouraged to use social media to share information during National Pest Management Month using the hashtag #NPMM in posts.

An exclusive toolkit full of marketing materials is available to PMPs who are mainframe subscribers on PPMAMainframe.org.
