The best defense against red imported fire ants is a strong offense

When battling red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta, or RIFA), the best defense is a strong offense.

RIFA is an invasive species from South America. The ants thrive across the Southern United States and will attack suddenly by stinging repeatedly when threatened. These stings can cause itchy welts, pain and even severe allergic reactions in animals and humans.

We recommend a granular treatment as your best line of attack. If you are within range of RIFA — and it spreads a little more each year — inspect your customers’ properties in the spring and fall after a substantial rain for the emergence of RIFA mounds. Determine the number and location of mounds and begin your treatment as soon as possible.

If few mounds are present, you can use targeted granular treatments. However, if multiple mounds are discovered, we recommend applying a granular treatment to the entire yard or property. Establishing an effective treatment perimeter will destroy the colony and the queen, and protect your customers from the risk of RIFA invasions.
