Apply nonrepellent insecticides to avoid repellency issues

Dr. Jason Meyers

Dr. Jason Meyers

BASF

Pyrethroids can cause a “flushing,” or repellency response from German cockroaches (Blattella germanica). Residual pyrethroid applications could be repellent for long periods, depending on the surface. These behaviors easily can go unnoticed by technicians initially but become apparent with repeated callbacks and treatments.

If repelled, the cockroaches will become determined to find new foraging routes to food and water sources — and avoid particular pyrethroid-treated areas.

Additionally, using repellent materials near bait deposits could deter or prevent cockroaches from feeding on the bait and could be at least as important as direct contamination of bait deposits. Instead, we want to increase the probability that cockroaches will walk or stay on a treated surface to be exposed to a lethal dose.

To avoid repellency issues and reduce callbacks, we recommend applying nonrepellent insecticides that kill, rather than repel, the population.

CSI: Fuse Cockroach Gel Bait

IMAGE: CSI
IMAGE: CSI

Control Solutions Inc. (CSI), a leader in innovative pest management solutions, introduces Fuse Cockroach Gel Bait, the latest addition to CSI’s Bait Solutions line. This proprietary, combination gel bait is truly a killer combination with two active ingredients, abamectin and fipronil.

Fuse Cockroach Gel Bait is highly attractive and palatable to cockroaches and retains moisture with limited dripping in high heat climates, like commercial kitchens. This bait matrix has undergone rigorous scientific testing at major university and third-party laboratories.

The all-in-one combination of fipronil and abamectin active ingredients in Fuse Cockroach Gel Bait combats bait-averse cockroaches and can provide excellent control against even the most difficult infestations. It is designed to work on heavy infestations, cockroach cleanouts, and for long-term maintenance with extended control.

This bait is also a good resistance management tool for pest management professionals (PMPs) looking for a new and effective gel bait option. Research has shown there is little resistance to abamectin in cockroach populations (Lee et. al, 2022), so you get the added benefit of resistance management with the powerful action of fipronil.

You can focus your Fuse Cockroach Gel Bait applications in areas of presumed and current cockroach activity. Common hotspots include cracks and crevices around pipes, faucets, inside cabinets, and behind and underneath appliances. Apply the gel bait in small round spots or in a thin bead (line). For easy application underneath items and appliances, a bead of bait can be placed on a piece of wax paper and slid underneath hard-to-reach areas. The amount of bait applied can be adjusted depending on the level of infestation and the goal for the service (cockroach cleanouts or maintenance).

Fuse Cockroach Gel Bait is highly effective against both small and large cockroaches, as well as stored product pests. This bait starts killing cockroaches and reducing populations within the first day of application and provides continued control up to six months. It also kills cockroaches by both ingestion and contact, so you can kill the cockroaches you see — and the ones you don’t.

About Control Solutions Inc.

Founded in Pasadena, Texas, Control Solutions Inc. (CSI) is a mid-sized, U.S.-based specialty chemical manufacturer with a long-standing tradition of providing effective and economical solutions to customers in the pest control, turf and ornamental, consumer products and professional animal health care markets. CSI leverages its position as a subsidiary of the ADAMA Group, one of the world’s largest agricultural chemical companies, to access a wide range of active ingredients and offer an extensive product portfolio.

The company can actually trace its roots to 1958, when President and CEO Mark Boyd’s father, Richard, purchased a small pest control company in Pasadena and founded Ford’s Pest Control. By 1960, Richard Boyd launched Ford’s Chemical to formulate and sell pest control solutions to colleagues and the public. In 1976, he merged the two businesses into Ford’s Chemical and Service. Diversify your plan of attack to combat German cockroaches

Dr. Cisse Spragins

Dr. Cisse Spragins

Rockwell Labs

Various techniques and products often are necessary to implement a successful cockroach control program. Gel baits, granular baits and dusts can help diversify your plan of attack.

Gel baits are the primary go-to solution for German cockroach management, but bait aversion can occur if there is long-term use of the same or similar bait. Rotating between at least two different gel baits can prevent bait aversion.

When choosing a bait, the quality and diversity of attractants are as important as the AI. Granular baits offer a different bait matrix and are ideal for large cockroaches — but they also can add value and diversity to a German cockroach control program. Granular baits work well outdoors but also can be applied indoors in cracks, crevices, voids and non-living areas where cockroaches have been seen.

Dusts are a valuable and economical tool that can round out your program and provide long-lasting control. For relatively dry areas, amorphous silica dust is ideal. The dust clings to pests and causes rapid dehydration and death by contact.

In areas with chronic dampness, boric acid dust is a great option. It can be applied to areas with organic build-up, effectively turning the cockroaches’ food source into a pesticidal bait.

Understand the biology of German cockroaches to achieve effective control

Tommy Powell

Tommy Powell

MGK

Understanding the biology of any pest is the key to effective control. That is especially true when dealing with German cockroaches. When trying to control a population of German cockroaches, it is important to recognize that most of the population is likely comprised of nymphs. You can control adults, especially males, easily. Nymphs are much harder to control because they don’t forage far from their harborage area.

My general rule when using any bait product or liquid application is to apply that product within three feet of all harborage areas in the account. This means you’ll need to conduct a thorough inspection and identify as many harborage areas as you can. Usually, that means getting down on your hands and knees to get under objects in the account. I also recommend a good pair of kneepads.

I have a saying: “If you didn’t get dirty during your inspection, you probably didn’t do it right.”

7 things to consider to help improve your cockroach control

Heather Patterson

Heather Patterson

Control Solutions Inc.

Not getting the results you were expecting after a cockroach service? Cockroach control can be tricky, so it may be important to reassess the situation.

Seven things to consider

  1. Effective material placement. Place products in areas where the cockroaches are active and seeking harborage to increase the likelihood of exposure, contact and interception.
  2. Insecticide resistance management. Cockroaches can develop resistance to various insecticides. Rotating products with different active ingredients (AIs) and modes of action (MOA) is recommended.
  3. Look for hidden infestations. Cockroaches often hide in hard-to-reach places that may not have been initially treated. Inspect these areas, such as under appliances or in wall voids, during subsequent visits.
  4. Avoid overapplication. Refrain from excessive use of dusts or other products that can repel cockroaches or push them to untreated areas.
  5. Inspect for conducive conditions. Look for issues in the environment that could challenge your management strategies, such as accessibility to competing food sources, leaks or moisture problems, excessive clutter, or entry points from neighboring units with infestations.
  6. Employ an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Target cockroaches at different stages and areas by using various methods, including gel baits, dry flowables, insect growth regulators (IGRs), residual sprays and glue boards.
  7. Monitor activity. Use sticky traps to gauge activity before and after treatments. This helps identify persistent hotspots.

The researchers’ rendering of what the amber-preserved wasp might have looked like. IMAGES: QUONG WU

Scientists working in Kachin, Myanmar, have discovered a previously unknown wasp species preserved in 99-million-year-old Kachin amber, boasting an abdomen unlike any seen before. The wasp’s rear end exhibits a rounded abdominal apparatus with hairy bristles, reminiscent of a Venus flytrap.

Sixteen adult female wasps were found, allowing researchers to classify them as a new species, Sirenobethylus charybdis. According to a article on ScienceAlert.com, the researchers note that “the rounded abdominal apparatus, combined with the setae along the edges, is reminiscent of a Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula), a carnivorous plant using two opposing specialized leaves to capture insect prey.”

Possible parasitic behavior

The researchers, led by Qiong Wu from Capital Normal University in Beijing, China, theorize the wasp was a koinobiont parasite, laying eggs inside live hosts. Its unusual abdomen likely functioned to capture and restrain prey during egg-laying. The paddle-shaped structure, lined with hairy bristles (setae), suggests a grasping, jaw-like function. Trigger hairs may have allowed the wasp to lie in wait and quickly capture passing prey. The lack of male specimens, however, limited the team’s understanding of the grasper’s full function.

“Many modern koinobiont wasps target slow-moving hosts like caterpillars and fly larvae to house their burgeoning offspring,” Science Alert points out. “This newly described wasp’s grasping rear end would have broadened its options in this regard, allowing it to trap otherwise speedy hosts for long enough to inject eggs into their bodies.”

The research is published online in BMC Biology.

Add-on services: What PMPs can offer or enhance this year

GRAPHIC: PMP STAFF

GRAPHIC: PMP STAFF

We asked Pest Management Professional’s columnists and editorial advisory board members for some good options for add-on services that PMPs can start offering or enhancing this year. Here are some of their responses from our March 2025 print edition.

Michael Broder

Michael Broder

Greg Baumann: “Rather than quickly picking an add-on service, decide whether your current techs will handle the new business. If you are a 14-stop-per-day company, the time spent will have to be quick. If you want to add specialized staff, you become more flexible. Only then should you pick an add-on service.”

Michael Broder: “Provide a detailed inspection and audit to report on all potential pest-conducive conditions. This can help prevent future pest issues as the weather warms up.”

Foster Brusca: “Offering additional services that regularly bring a service technician inside the home can enhance service value and strengthen long-term customer relationships. Add-ons like pheromone and bed bug monitoring are excellent upsell opportunities that any technician can confidently present to their existing customers, boosting service effectiveness and customer retention.”

Dr. Faith Oi

Dr. Faith Oi

Dr. Faith Oi: “I recommend exclusion for rodents and other pest issues.”

Glen Ramsey: “Minor exclusion work. Door sweeps, sealing around entry points, and screening crawlspace vents are easy entries into a new revenue stream with little upfront cost or training.”

Sheri Spencer Bachman, ACE: “When considering an add-on service for your pest control company, it’s crucial to weigh the pros and cons — especially when deciding between recurring and non-recurring services. Recurring services contribute to predictable revenue and business growth, whereas non-recurring services can bring in additional income but may not support long-term scalability.”

Desiree Straubinger, BCE

Desiree Straubinger, BCE

Desiree Straubinger, BCE: “Mosquito, flea and tick treatments are a great way to add additional revenue to an existing contract. You’re already visiting the home or business, so no additional drive time is required.”

Dennis Jenkins: “While most everyone in the pest control industry offers rodent control, doing exclusion work is not quite as common. Using baits and traps is a great way to reduce rodent populations, but in some cases the rodent population will build again as rodents invade again. For example, some folks live near open fields or near lakes, and the rodent pressure is almost constant. In those cases, excluding the rodents using various barriers, and closing entry points is a great service to offer customers. It is also a great service when the pest pressure slows in the late fall and winter. Exclusion takes materials and skills that may be somewhat different depending on the area of the country you live in, but you can learn those skills and add this service to your current offerings. Also, if you are new to dealing with fire ants and they are in your service area, it is a two-step process: treat the mounds and treat the grounds. This is very easy to add to regular services and increases the average dollars per stop, which makes it a better paying job for both your technician and your company. An interesting fact for those who are new to fire ants is fire ants bite and sting, which is why they are so painful!”

The Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA), which serves as the public outreach arm of the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), will recognize National Pest Management Month in April.

“National Pest Management Month provides an opportunity for the industry to lead the conversation on why professional pest control matters,” said Dr. Jim Fredericks, BCE, executive director of PPMA. “This is a chance for companies nationwide to work together and amplify our collective efforts, ensuring the public understands the immeasurable impact of proper pest management in keeping our communities safe and healthy.”

A spotlight on the importance of pest management

  • Research conducted in 2024 by the NPMA found that 60 percent of Americans say having a pest-free home is important to them.
  • Studies also show that many citizens remain unaware of the serious health and structural threats posed by pests.

BASF: Termidor Foam

IMAGE: BASF
IMAGE: BASF
For 25 years, the Termidor brand has helped pest control companies successfully deliver on their promises of termite-free structures for their customers. This includes Termidor Foam termiticide/insecticide, which has the same great efficacy in a convenient, ready-to-use foam formulation that controls subterranean and drywood termites as well as carpenter ants. Its exclusive formulation offers excellent control and coverage with thick, strong cell walls that studies have shown will stay intact up to six times longer than other foam termiticides.

And, with a 30:1 expansion ratio, Termidor Foam generates up to 5 gallons of foam per can. Use Termidor Foam in wall voids on the interior, where the attached hose applicator comes in handy for treating tight spaces. Spray it outdoors on decks, fencing, wooden retaining walls or other non-structural elements, including trees and shrubs. Termidor Foam is an easy, effective add-on when a targeted spot treatment is needed and, when paired with Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations, delivers fast control and colony elimination of above-ground termites.

BASF offers a comprehensive portfolio of pest control solutions for the most demanding pest management professionals. Whether your specific area is residential, commercial, pre-construction, or post-construction, BASF has the products with a proven track record.

New and improved Flight Control Max bird repellent targets Canada geese (Branta canadensis). When birds eat or forage through treated turf, they experience an intense but harmless digestive irritation. Flight Control Max is odorless, non-toxic and long-lasting. It is waterproof once it dries and will not wash away with rain or irrigation.

Pest Index January 2025 update: Industry growth slows to 9 percent

Logo: PCO Bookkeepers & M&A SpecialistsThe total U.S. William Blair/PCO M&A Specialists Pest Index increased 9 percent year-over-year in January 2025, decelerating from December’s 11 percent result. The January result is slightly below the long-term average pest index growth rate of 10 percent.

“Based on commentary from several regional operators, we believe weather may have negatively affected January performance in some markets,” said William Blair Equity Researcher Tim Mulrooney. “On a sequential basis, the index increased 4 percent from January, which is in line with normal seasonal trends.”

Dan Gordon, CPA, managing member of PCO Bookkeepers & M&A Specialists and Pest Management Professional’s financial columnist, added, “The January result reflects continued resiliency in our market. It will be interesting to see if economic news in subsequent months changes anything. In any case, we know the pest control industry is consistent over the long haul.”

The month’s results by segment include:

  • Residential Pest Index increased 10 percent year-over-year.
  • Commercial Pest Index increased 10 percent year-over-year.
  • Termite Index increased 5 percent year-over year.
  • Bed Bug Index increased 12 percent year-over-year.
  • Mosquito Index decreased 1 percent year-over-year.

Bird-X: Outdoor Laser II

IMAGE: BIRD-X
IMAGE: BIRD-X

New Outdoor Laser II is a cutting-edge deterrent system that projects dynamic patterns in red and green wavelengths to deter diurnal and nocturnal birds. These captivating light displays cover an expansive area of up to 4,000 square feet, making the system an ideal solution for a wide range of commercial and industrial applications. The unit has programmable operation intervals of two, four, six and eight hours, allowing users to create schedules that prevent birds from becoming accustomed to the deterrent.

About Bird-X

Bird-X started as a small idea in 1964, starting with a Bird Lite (today known as the Bird Strobe Light) that was being sold to deter birds from commercial areas.

In the beginning, Bird-X was a single-employee business that was entirely operated by Richard Seid. The company spent the first 28 years selling innovative bird control products via trade publications. Readers responded to the ads in these publications and Bird-X sold bird control products directly to the end user.

In 1992, his son, Joe Seid, joined the family business as the company’s 10th employee and strategically expanded sales channels. This was the start of a major growth period for the company. Throughout years of a dedicated online presence, combined with a knowledgeable team of bird control sales specialists, Bird-X has become a time-tested leader in the bird control industry.

Now, Bird-X supplies a growing product line of more than 400 humane bird control solutions used in more than 60 countries around the world. The company employs a seasoned staff — 20 percent of whom have been a part of the company for more than 25 years and have directly contributed to the tremendous growth and success.
