Diversify your plan of attack to combat German cockroaches

Various techniques and products often are necessary to implement a successful cockroach control program. Gel baits, granular baits and dusts can help diversify your plan of attack.

Gel baits are the primary go-to solution for German cockroach management, but bait aversion can occur if there is long-term use of the same or similar bait. Rotating between at least two different gel baits can prevent bait aversion.

When choosing a bait, the quality and diversity of attractants are as important as the AI. Granular baits offer a different bait matrix and are ideal for large cockroaches — but they also can add value and diversity to a German cockroach control program. Granular baits work well outdoors but also can be applied indoors in cracks, crevices, voids and non-living areas where cockroaches have been seen.

Dusts are a valuable and economical tool that can round out your program and provide long-lasting control. For relatively dry areas, amorphous silica dust is ideal. The dust clings to pests and causes rapid dehydration and death by contact.

In areas with chronic dampness, boric acid dust is a great option. It can be applied to areas with organic build-up, effectively turning the cockroaches’ food source into a pesticidal bait.
