Why culture is crucial to your pest control business

Culture is the backbone of any organization. It shapes how employees interact, how decisions are made, and how successful the company becomes. A well-defined company culture creates unity and purpose, ensuring everyone works toward the same goals.

Many business owners believe they have a strong company culture because they promote values like being “family-oriented” or “showing integrity.” While these are great ideals, culture goes beyond words. It must be clearly defined, reinforced and actively lived by everyone in the company.

One of the biggest mistakes a business can make is assuming it has a strong culture without actually defining its core values. When asked, many owners struggle to articulate their values — and as a result, their employees don’t know what they are. If leadership doesn’t define the company’s culture, employees will, and it may not align with what’s best for the business.

I learned this firsthand when managing five branches. Three locations had strong performance, high employee retention and exceeded goals. The other two struggled with turnover, low morale and missed targets. The difference was in culture. The high-performing locations followed a culture I had intentionally built, while the struggling ones had developed their own, ineffective cultures. Once I realized this, I made changes — including shifting people — to unify all five locations under the same culture, leading to better results across the board.

Defining your core values

Core values should be clear, actionable and easy to remember. They serve as a guide for decision-making, hiring, training and customer service.

To define your core values:

  1. Identify what truly matters. Beyond profitability, what principles drive your business?
  2. Keep it simple. Use the acronym CARE: Communicate, Assist, Respect, Educate.
  3. Make them actionable. Values should be reflected in daily behaviors.
  4. Limit the list. Stick to three to seven values to keep them manageable.

The power of a strong culture

A strong company culture leads to engaged, motivated and high-performing teams. It reduces turnover, enhances customer experience and makes scaling the business easier. Without a defined and reinforced culture, a company risks inconsistency and inefficiency.

Business owners must go beyond generic statements and commit to defining, living and reinforcing core values. The entire company benefits when everyone in the organization knows, believes in and follows the same cultural principles.

Reinforcing culture

Defining culture is only the first step; reinforcing it is what makes it stick. Here’s how:

1. Lead by example. Culture starts at the top. Owners and managers must consistently demonstrate core values. If leadership doesn’t embody the culture, employees won’t either.

2. Communicate core values regularly. There are several ways to do this, including:

    • Display them in the office, on your website and in employee handbooks.
    • Reference them in meetings, reviews and daily operations.
    • Share stories of employees who exemplify these values.

3. Integrate core values into hiring and onboarding. Hire based on culture fit. Ask candidates about their values and how they align with yours. Train new hires on the company’s culture and expectations from Day One.

4. Hold employees accountable. Core values should be measurable expectations. Provide feedback based on these standards and take corrective action if employees act against them.
Recognize and reward culture champions. Positive reinforcement strengthens culture. Acknowledge employees who live the company values through shoutouts, awards and incentives.
