When thinking about bed bugs, our minds often jump to homes and hotel rooms. However, libraries can be surprisingly susceptible to infestations. With patrons spending extended periods among books and furniture, the risk of bed bugs hitching a ride is very real.
Books are frequently read in bed and easily can become unexpected carriers, with bed bugs taking harborage inside their bindings. This makes the likelihood of them returning to the library higher than one might assume.
At public, private and school libraries, regular pest inspections are crucial. Pay close attention to potential hiding spots such as furniture, carpets, rugs and computer stations. Inspecting bookshelves can be particularly challenging. Bed bugs often hide in the bindings, so look for signs like fecal spots, stains and shed skins on top of the books.
When it comes to treating libraries, extra caution is necessary because of the presence of children and regular visitors. Many libraries use small heat pods to treat books without causing any damage.
