Dangerous Signs of Mold Allergies in Children and What You Need to Do About It

Dangerous Mold Allergies

Mold allergy is a common problem that affects millions of people across the globe, particularly children. However, adults are also susceptible to mold allergy. Mold is simply a fungus that grows rapidly in thousands and requires water and warmth to grow and multiply. Research studies have shown that at least one in every three children is allergic to mold. Some of the signs and symptoms of identifying mold allergy in children include:

Respiratory problems

If your child is exposed to mold spores, he/she develops respiratory problems that are closely related to those attributed to seasonal allergies. Common respiratory problems of mold allergy include a runny nose, sneezing, and irritated eyes. Your child may also suffer from coughing and throat irritation among other problems.

When respiratory problems from mold allergy are not treated, the problems can escalate to severe illnesses such as asthma and lung infections. These problems pose a real danger and threat to the health of the child and can even result in death, in extreme cases.

Idiopathic pulmonary hemorrhage

Idiopathic Pulmonary Hemorrhage (IPH) is a severe lung condition that is predominantly present in children with serious mold allergy. IPH is characterized by acute lung bleeding that easily leads to respiratory distress when not treated in early stages. This symptom is mainly common in children with continuous mold infection for long.

It is worth noting that IPH may take longer to manifest itself and as such, it may not be noticed until very late. Due to this, it is important to take your child for regular check up in case you suspect there is mold infection in your home or place of residence.

Congestion and itchy nose

Mold allergy mostly affects the respiratory tract and therefore, most of the allergies’ symptoms are seen in this tract. For children with mold allergy, nose itchiness and congestion are common signs. When your child inhales mold spores, they cause irritations and itchiness on the internal surface of the nose. With long mold exposure, the itchiness may become too severe and cause great discomfort.

On the other hand, congestion complicates breathing making it hard for your child to breathe normally and without any difficulties whatsoever. Although congestion can go away with time, it is advisable to seek medical attention if your child is experiencing persistent nose itchiness and congestion.

There are a lot other signs and symptoms of mold allergy in children. These allergies may be similar or different from one child to the other. Most of these symptoms only last for as long as your child is exposed to mold. However, in some children, the symptoms may still continue even after mold removal and result in severe respiratory conditions like asthma.

Mold allergy signs, symptoms, and indications are used as a basis for diagnosis and positive identification of the condition. Severe mold allergies are mostly common in children and adults exposed to a large amount of mold in residential and occupational settings.

Common mold locations

The easiest and most efficient way to address mold allergies is by identifying the places where this fungus is growing around the home or place of work. Generally, molds grow in nearly all areas, both in indoor and outdoor spaces. They grow all year round and do not have a particular season for growth. Humid and warm conditions encourage mold growth.

In indoor spaces, mold grows in spaces where there is a high amount of humidity such as in bathrooms or basements. In outdoor spaces, this fungus grows in damp areas or in places where vegetation and leaves are decomposing. It is also common to see mold growth in air conditioners, humidifiers, carpets, mattresses, trash cans, and also in the kitchen.

Other areas where mold concentrations are likely to be high include farms, saunas, construction areas, summer cottages, flower shops, antique shops, and greenhouses. Children with a high susceptibility to mold allergies should avoid areas with high concentrations of this fungus.

Mold prevention

The most practical way of preventing mold is by controlling moisture. Even though it is nearly impossible to completely prevent mold growth, there are a number of ways through which you can reduce the likelihood of mold growth at home. These include:

Fixing plumbing leaks to eliminate moisture build-up in places such as kitchen, bathrooms, basements and in humidifiers. This helps in ensuring that accumulation and build up of humidity in living quarters is eliminated and thus preventing your child from suffering from mold allergies.

Ensure good airflow in the house particularly in the basement, bathroom, and kitchen. You can use exhaust fans to aerate indoor spaces thereby enhancing the flow of fresh and dry air.

Mold removal

The ultimate way of preventing mold allergies in your children is through mold removal. The removal of mold at home is hugely dependent on the amount of mold to be removed. You can remove small moldy patches (not exceeding 9 square feet) by your own. However, for large amounts of mold, it is important to hire a professional mold removal service provider.

When you identify signs of mold growth in your home, you necessarily need not have the mold tested. This is because there is no type of mold that is safe to children or any other class of people thereof. As such, you can contract a mold removal service to clean and get rid of mold from your home. These experts are not only knowledgeable in mold removal but also have the right set of equipment needed for removing mold.

How to exercise caution over mold allergies in children

Before renting or buying a home, it is important to have it tested for mold growth. This analysis and testing go a long way in averting a possible mold exposure to your children. It is always important to ensure that even when removing mold from your premises, future mold growth should be completely prevented.

The best thing about mold allergies in children is that they are not permanent conditions. These allergic reactions stop after removing your child’s exposure to mold. If your child experiences signs of mold allergies that do not seem to stop even after mold removal, it is necessary to seek medical attention.

How to Handle Moisture in Your Conservatory

An Unhealthy Environment

Damp is not only something that can cause issues with the walls, windowsills, door frames and damp – it can also be very bad for your health. The National Health Service have noted that babies, children and elderly people are the ones who are most at risk from damp. However, living in a polluted environment can cause serious health problems for anybody, it is therefore very important that you try to get rid of damp as early as possible.

What Causes Damp

The main causes of damp and mould are often caused by there being excess moisture in the atmosphere. In a conservatory there can be a number of reasons for there being high levels of water vapour, primarily condensation. This condensation builds as a result of hot air cooling and leaving water droplets behind which collect together and cause wetness. It is therefore vital to wipe any excess moisture with a cloth to wipe away the water. There can also be a number of other causes for damp occurring in your home, this can be down to leaky pipes, drains, cracks, or un-levelled roofing. It is therefore important to keep a check on any of these problems.

If that isn’t done, then water can drip onto your furniture and other appliances, which can
cause mould to form.

How to Prevent Damp

As is the case with a number of things, preventing the damp is much better than having to find a cure. There are numerous ways you can do this. As mentioned before, you want to try and wipe or mop any excess moisture before it begins to settle in your home. The other option is to open up your doors and windows to allow any hot air that may have gathered in your conservatory to escape – this can prevent the condensation from forming in the first place.

The other option can be to purchase a dehumidifier which is a machine which is designed to pull moisture out of the air and store the water droplets in a tank system. This is arguably the easiest way to prevent damp from ruining your conservatory.

Protecting Your Furniture from Damp

Just as it is important to take the relevant steps to prevent damp from spreading on your walls and windows, it is also vital that you take the correct steps in treating the furniture in your conservatory too. It is important that you are careful with this though as a lot of rattan and cane furniture can be damaged if it is not handled correctly. So if you do find any mould or grime on your furniture, you should scrub it with a damp cloth – whilst being careful not to scratch or crack it.

Treating and Getting Rid of the Damp

Sometimes, we cannot be lucky enough for these tips to remove and clear your conservatory of damp. This is where the help of some specialists may be required, these are people that will able to let you know exactly what is causing the damp and they will know the exact steps you should take to remove it for good.

How to Identify and Deal with Bathroom Mould

A Moisture Trap

If you’ve never seen mould in your bathroom, you’re either a truly fastidious cleaner or you’re simply not looking hard enough. It’s one of the most common cleaning problems in the house. This is because the bathroom often provides the ideal conditions for mould to grow – much of the time there is warm, humid air and lots of moisture in a small space with little ventilation, and this is the best way for mould to grow.

Sometimes mould is misidentified simply as a build-up of dirt or a stain, so it’s worth knowing exactly how to spot mould and what you should do about it if you find it. Here, contributor Mike James worked with The Bathroom Discount Centre to determine the most common causes of mould, how you can treat it but also perhaps more importantly, how to stop the mould from developing in the first place.

Common causes of bathroom mould

As a rule, mould occurs when moisture is able to build up over a period of time. Commonly you will see lingering moisture build up in a bathroom simply as a result of humid air or even just from water splashes from a shower or bath. One problem is when shower heads are jetting water in strange directions (usually as a result of not being cleaned properly) – this can lead to water hitting parts of the bathroom that are not really designed to deal with his level of moisture, or are hidden from view.

Mould can also be the result of leaks and issues with plumbing. So if you are finding mould in unexplained places, it may be that you have a leak somewhere that is causing a small amount of moisture to be released.

Is bathroom mould dangerous?

The truth is that while mould may be a very unwelcome addition to your bathroom, the vast majority of types of mould are not dangerous. However, this may not be the case for people with a weakened immune system, with asthma, babies and the elderly, as even standard mould can be a real irritant.

It’s also worth noting that there are some very rare forms of mould that can cause serious health problems, even for fit and healthy people. Often referred to as ‘black mould’, these substances can cause flu-like symptoms and even other ussies such as dizziness, skin rashes and fungal infections. However, these forms of mould are very rarely seen – even those many kinds of mould are black in colour, they are not especially dangerous.

Preventing the development of mould

Undoubtedly the best way to deal with mould is to not allow it to develop at all. As we already, mentioned, bathrooms present ideal conditions for mould to develop so this may be easier said than done, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t take simple steps to help ensure that mould has a tougher time than usual.

The first thing to note is that if you want to prevent mould you need to allow for as much ventilation as possible, especially when you have a bath or shower. Open a window or use a ventilation fan whilst you shower or bathe and leave it open or on for at least half an hour afterwards. If you have a regular problem with mould and don’t have a ventilation fan, you should certainly look at having one installed.

You should also use a mildew-resistant shower curtain and wash it frequently, along with any bathroom rugs. Finally, make sure there are no places for mould to grow that you can’t see. For example, mould often grows behind bottles of shampoo and other bathroom paraphernalia.

How to get rid of mould

Generally as long as the mould infestation isn’t huge, you should be able to deal with it fairly easily. First you should start by simply cleaning the affected area with a substance that kills mould. Diluted vinegar is an effective way to eliminate mould on a non-porous surface. If the mould has seeped into caulking, it may be necessary to remove this and replace it.

However, if mould is widespread and is growing from the walls or insulation then it may be time to call in professional help to get the issue sorted. The more serious the mould problem, the more likely you are to develop health problems, so this is something that you really need to deal with as soon as possible.

5 Ways To Protect Your Home During The Rain Season

Rain Season and Mold

While winter may not see constant rain day in, day out, it’s nevertheless a challenging time of year for hill-bound households. Without the proper precautions and planning, your home may be susceptible to various rain-related problems – including mold.

Not only is it unsightly, mold’s effects run deeper than the aesthetic: mold has been known to cause irritated throats, congestion, coughing, eye discomfort, and skin issues. In some rare cases, it can even lead to infections in people suffering from serious problems with their immune system.

You want to protect yourself and your family from any frustrating smells or health concerns as much as you possibly can – and we’re going to help you!

Here are our five tips for protecting your home during the upcoming rainy season:

Dry Dampness Without Delay

As mold thrives on moisture, you have to be quick to tackle any signs of dampness. Wet areas, created by rain seeping through a hole in your ceiling or down into your basement, should be addressed as soon as possible. If you just leave them to dry by themselves, you could endanger yourself, your property’s structural integrity, and your family.

Hire, or buy, a dehumidifier, and open your windows from time to time to allow moisture to escape. Obviously, you may be unable to do this in pouring rain, so take the opportunity whenever it presents itself. Also, if you see condensation forming anywhere, wipe it down immediately.

Identify Problem Zones Before the Rainy Season Starts

While you can’t make your entire home resistant to mold, you can search your property to identify the most vulnerable spots.

Pay attention to every room. Have you noticed dampness forming in your basement in past rain seasons? Have you found condensation on your bedroom window but failed to wipe it down? Have you spotted a drip from an overhead pipe?

Any and all of these can lead to dampness and, ultimately, mold. Take care to address such issues with effective moisture control before the season begins.

Never Underestimate Good Ventilation

Earlier, we mentioned opening your window once in a while, to help stave off damp and combat mold. However, you can reduce your risks even further by effective ventilation.

Every home has appliances that create moisture (such as stoves, driers etc.), but it’s important to make sure these are being vented outdoors rather than running up to your attic, allowing the moisture to escape. This may appear a little more difficult to set up, but there’s a wealth of information on doing so out there.

Inspect Your Roof Gutters

If it’s been a while since you had your roof gutters inspected, be sure to rectify this before the start of rain season.

Your gutters may well have been damaged without your realizing, and lead to leaks over the coming months. Either examine them yourself (taking great care and proper precautions), or hire a professional to do so on your behalf.

This is one of the most effective moisture control techniques.

Buy a Moisture Meter to Monitor Your Humidity Levels

A moisture meter is one of your best tools against mold.

With one of these devices, you will be able to keep an eye on your humidity levels and address the cause of dampness as soon as possible. How will you know when to take moisture control action? According to the EPA, levels should be kept at between 30 and 60 percent – anything over this in your home, and you should pay attention to potential condensation, leaking pipes, or damp patches on walls.

You can find these at most hardware stores or online.

Don’t let yourself panic about mold: just follow the above tips and take effective action to keep dampness within your home to a minimum.

5 Steps to Avoid Bathroom Condensation

Stop the Condensation

Condensation is an issue for every bathroom – it’s a humid environment where moisture is released into the air in an indoor environment by something as simple as taking a shower or a hot bath. Condensation forms when the hot steam meets cold air and surfaces, forming droplets on windows, mirrors and every hard surface. The hotter the water vapour, the more moisture the air can hold and the more condensation will be deposited on cold surfaces.

But condensation is not merely a case of having to demist mirrors and windows. In addition to being a nuisance, it can also cause all sorts of problems, from peeling wallpaper to unsightly mould stains. Mould spores love nothing more than warm, damp environments where they will thrive, wreaking havoc in your bathroom… if you let them.

Obviously, you won’t be able to change the essential function of your bathroom, but there are some simple and effective steps you can take to dramatically reduce condensation in your bathroom, for everyone’s sake – and here are 5 advised by Mike James, who worked with the Bathroom Discount Centre on this steamy issue:

Ventilation

The first, basic step to reducing the harmful effects of condensation is to increase ventilation in the room to keep the airflow up and the moisture content down. Open a window when you’re running a bath or having a shower, and air the room well when you’ve finished.
Interestingly, double glazed windows offer extra protection as the inside pane is warmer than the outside pane. Single glazed windows, by contrast, attract more condensation.

You may think that opening the bathroom door may also be helpful, but you’d be wrong. All you’re doing is spreading the steamy air to other rooms, increasing the risk of the harmful effects of condensation there.

Finally, make sure that the shower door or curtain is left open after use so that the inside of the shower cubicle gets a decent airing too.

Clean and dry surfaces

Do ensure that your bathroom surfaces are kept clean and dry when the bathroom is not in use. This goes for baths, showers and washbasins as well as windows, mirrors and tiles. It may seem counterintuitive, but it’s important to discourage the moist environment in which mould can thrive.

If any black spots do appear around your bath, shower or washbasin as a result of too much condensation, use a solution of bleach and water to eliminate them as soon as you can, and prevent your bathroom from becoming a breeding ground for mould.

Extractor Fans

Every bathroom should have a fully operational extractor fan. Even if there is an outside window in the room, bathroom fans are non-negotiable. Ideally, install one that comes on automatically with the bathroom light or when you switch on the shower. If that’s not possible, at least keep the fan switch next to the light switch, so you won’t forget to turn it on.

It really cannot be stressed enough that not having/using a bathroom fan is a recipe for future disaster. And don’t forget to check your fan regularly, so that dust and dirt build-ups can’t impede the operational efficiency of the fan.

Dehumidifiers

A dehumidifier is a clever gadget that takes moisture from the air and collects it as water. They’re not cheap and not pretty, and are perhaps not a long-term solution to the problem, but having a dehumidifier running while you have a hot bath or steam shower will certainly lead to a big reduction in condensation. It’s a thought.

Warming up bathroom surfaces

Cold hard surfaces such as tiled areas, floors and mirrors are most likely to attract condensation. However, warming up these surfaces will help, as it reduces the contrast between hot and cold and therefore leads to less condensation.

Underfloor heating can help in this regard, as can demistable mirrors that are fitted with heat pads to keep the glass surface warm automatically.
