College group goes on ‘rat safari’ with Dr. Bobby Corrigan

Earlier this month, we learned that a group of Clinton, N.Y.-based Hamilton College students, enrolled in the “Hamilton in New York City” program, went on a New York City rat safari with noted rodentologist and PMP Hall of Famer Dr. Bobby Corrigan (Class of 2008).

“Hamilton in New York City combines an internship with academic experience and is unique in its attempt to encompass a wide range of perspectives on globalization,” a web page for the program explains. “Students spend four days a week as interns in a firm or organization for one credit. They attend weekly seminars one morning and evening for two credits and complete an independent project for one credit. Typically either the independent project or a seminar or both may receive concentration credit in the discipline or program of the director. Special arrangements for receiving concentration credit may be possible between the NYC Program and the department or program of a student’s concentration.”

According to an online news article by student participant Isha Parkhi, “We started our safari at 8 p.m. — that’s when the rats start foraging the city for food. We visited a subway station, several parks, specifically Columbus Park which at one time had over 200 rat burrows. Corrigan pointed out the factors that make a location favorable to rats, and we saw a decent number coming out of burrows, sliding into sewer openings, and scurrying out from under piles of garbage bags.”

Parkhi noted that the group was joined by Matt Combs, a 2013 Hamilton grad “who is now a graduate student in biology at Fordham University; Corrigan is his thesis advisor.”

We’re thrilled to hear Bobby spread the word on the importance of rodent control in urban areas, and hopefully opened some eyes as to the importance of sanitation and other preventive methods to keep rats out of people’s daily lives. Mentioning the esteemed Dr. Corrigan is a nice segue, too, for us to remind you to check out our upcoming June issue, which includes an overview of his illustrious career (and current projects) in our “A Look Back” feature.

Recognize the top 3 signs of ‘bug season burnout’

burnout PHOTO: ISTOCK.COM/OLM26250

PHOTO: ISTOCK.COM/OLM26250

What is good for the bottom line is not always ideal for the pest management technician in the field. Running a route this time of year, with repeatable 10- to 12-hour days, is stressful. There comes a time every season when pest assassins just want it to end — meet bug season burnout.

Burnout is a mental and physical response to an extended period of stress, resulting in lack of motivation, decreased job performance and increased irritability. Here are three warning signs of seasonal burnout, and how to avoid it.

1. Physical changes

SOURCE: LINKEDIN

SOURCE: LINKEDIN, Bit.ly/2v9oGMr

The first sign of burnout typically is physical. Symptoms include a tight and sore neck, headaches, perpetual exhaustion and stomach pains. While occasional exhaustion and sore muscles come with the territory, when they become consistent, serious note should be taken. Moreover, when those physical pains are accompanied by negative thoughts about the route or the client, burning out becomes a real concern.

How to combat it: Get more sleep! It is easier said than done because stress can keep people awake, and seasonal hours are long. But adequate rest is essential to getting your body back on track. If your schedule allows, take a 20-minute break between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for a power nap, when the body naturally wants to recharge. My favorite napping place as a technician was under a tree in a city park.

2. Attitude changes

An often-contrived positive attitude is common in the service industry. It’s certainly found within pest control — we put on our “happy faces” and suppress our irritation with redundant questions or difficult clients. But burnout often leads to increased irritability, depersonalization and a lack of motivation in the field. Burnout ultimately can affect your job performance

physically, by being too tired to get a job done, and emotionally, by being too worn out to even care.

How to combat it: Take time just for you. Engage in your hobby. Go on a day hike or fishing trip. Do something that brings you peace and happiness. You maintain your 1-gallon sprayer, don’t you? You rinse it and clean its filter. You must take time for personal maintenance as well. If you don’t, it may just be you springing a leak at a client’s home.

3. Apathy

In the field, pest assassins often have little control over their schedules. The office receives the call, routes the tech and assures the client of an arrival time. During the busy season, this continuous instability and inconsistency in a technician’s schedule increases the risk of burning out. Inflexible schedules, constant changes and long hours can leave technicians feeling trapped, and increases the likelihood of unhealthy coping through apathy.

How to combat it: Look for ways to add more control to your daily schedule. Take 10 to 15 minutes each morning before heading to your first stop, and outline a few goals to accomplish. By assigning and accomplishing a self-determined goal, you can regain a sense of control.

Your goals can be simple, such as:

  • Hand out 25 door hangers.
  • Read five articles in Pest Management Professional magazine between stops.
  • Finish two self-improvement podcasts.

Seasonal burnout is a real and present threat to pest management technicians. Self-vigilance, as well as a considerate manager, can help reduce the effects of seasonal burnout on a company’s staff this year, and will produce a more effective pest assassination team.

Use residual products to keep mosquitoes away

As temperatures start to rise, so does the threat of mosquitoes. With recent flooding in the Midwest and the remaining snow packs up north that will rapidly melt in the coming weeks, the standing water equates to strong mosquito pressure for many regions this spring.

When customers trust you with this service, it’s not enough to just knock mosquitoes down; look for products with a long residual and wash-off resistance to help keep these nuisance — and public health — pests away until your next service.

NCPMA hosts reception for policymakers

The North Carolina Pest Management Association (NCPMA) hosted a reception at the North Carolina Museum of History for state representatives on May 22.

Over 40 NCPMA members and close to 30 members of the legislature registered to attend. NCPMA members were able to mingle with elected officials and make personal connections, helping to put a face to our industry.

While this is the first reception the organization held at the museum, the association has hosted a legislative meet and greet in Raleigh, N.C., each year. This year’s event was an example of a new and unique way for a state association to reach out and interact with policymakers.

Founded in 1952, the NCPMA provides its members and the general public up-to-date pest management information. Since its inception, the organization has grown to include more than 280 member companies and over 3,000 cardholding members. NCPMA offers continuing education classes and year-round technical and management courses through the Pest Control Technician School and regional workshops.

The Pest Control Technician School is held annually. The 2019 event, in its 69th year, was held in January and attracted nearly 1,000 pest management professionals from across the state for education, training and networking.

IMAGE: SYNGENTA

The SecureChoice Tick Assurance Program from Syngenta can help reduce outdoor tick populations around customers’ properties on a 90-day treatment cycle. It features Demand CS insecticide, which is formulated with the power of proprietary iCAP technology. Unique microcapsules in iCAP technology are designed to be picked up by ticks as they crawl over treated surfaces to help control them on contact. Smaller microcaps release the active ingredient quickly for immediate control, while larger microcaps release the active ingredient later for residual control that can last for up to 90 days.

5 questions with Chris Poehlmann

PHOTO: ZOE SMITH

Chris Poehlmann creates Termitats that showcase the behavior of Pacific dampwood termites, which are large and easy to observe. PHOTO: ZOE SMITH

This month, we ask Chris Poehlmann, developer of the Termitat, a tabletop-sized termite habitat, to explain how he came to develop a device that showcases termite behavior. The experienced designer and fabricator of interactive museum exhibits created the name Termitat from the words termite and habitat. His past work includes projects using live animals, with a specialty in social insects.

1. How did you get the idea to display termites doing what they do best?

I was contracted as a museum exhibit professional to come up with exhibits of social insects appropriate for a natural history museum in California. After my work with ants, bees and termites, I was particularly drawn to the fascinating story of the termite and its marvelous evolutionary path to becoming one of the most successful organisms on Earth.

2. What species of termite do you use?

My research into finding the best termite to use for exhibition led me to the Pacific dampwood termite (Zootermopsis angusticollis). This species is a good exhibit animal because it is large, it lives in the wood it consumes and it does not need contact with soil. And, importantly and conveniently, I have them in abundance in a forest near where I live in northern California.

3The design lets you see termite activity, but can the termites escape?

The Termitat’s tightly fitting case design uses 0.25-inch-thick acrylic, a plastic injection molded ring and security screws. It has yet to be broken open in normal use. Anyway, a small colony group released most likely traumatically in a non-forest location would not be able to establish themselves individually or as a group. Any individual termites on their own and away from their colony would perish. Plus, if your house has the same conditions as a damp, decaying forest log, you have other more serious problems to deal with.

4. The accompanying booklet and website contain plenty of information about termites, so we have to ask: Why the interest in termites?

There are amazing stories to discover among the millions of plants and animals on this planet. One of the most incredible is the tale of the termites. Often ignored due to their unfortunate misrepresentation as “just a pest,” these complex and evolved insects are incredibly fascinating to observe and have important lessons to teach us. Termites and humans are both highly social species, but unlike us, termites have remained in balance with the Earth’s complex ecosystems.

Besides being just fascinating to watch, they have many lessons to pass on. As scientists, architects and even robotics engineers study these amazing creatures, they are discovering how sophisticated termite adaptations are and the instrumental part these insects play in Earth’s ecology. Termites are the 200-million-year-old master recyclers of the Earth’s carbon who also share a social behavior system similar to ours.

5. How are pest management professionals (PMPs) using the Termitat?

Many PMPs pursue continuing education and purchase them because of their own curiosity and interest in these insects that are so central to their careers and services they offer. Additionally, the Termitat’s role in helping them educate their customers can lead to increased sales and customer loyalty.

NWCOA seeks new management team

NWCOA logo

The National Wildlife Control Operators Association (NWCOA) is undertaking a strategic search for a new management team, after a nearly six-year tenure with Cooper Coron & Associates (CCA) as its association management company.

“With professional service, expert management vision and a very personal touch, CCA has helped bring NWCOA from a small trade association with 450 members to a nationally recognized authority on wildlife control training and industry development with 900 members,” says Charles Holt, NWCOA president, in a press release.

Andrea and Kristin Coron, principals with CCA, began their work with NWCOA in August 2013. In the ensuing time, the Corons learned a lot about the wildlife control industry and worked their way into the heart of the organization.

“NWCOA’s sharp growth has really increased the management needs beyond the capacity of our company,” explains Andrea Coron, CCA president and NWCOA executive director, in a press release. “It has been hugely rewarding to work with the great people who lead and those who are members of NWCOA. We will really miss this organization. We are very proud of the role that we’ve played in NWCOA’s growth over the last 5.75 years.”

In addition to membership growth, NWCOA has experienced growth in its training department in both the number of certification courses available and the frequency of their presentation. With the hiring of Gregg Schumaker as training coordinator, three new courses have been developed, and the organization has quadrupled the number of training events it provides.

“The financial stability and strength cultivated under the watchful eye of CCA’s financial management has positioned NWCOA to capitalize on the momentum built over the last three years and continue the exponential growth in our training opportunities,” comments Chris Lunn, NWCOA treasurer, in a press release.

A request for proposals outlining the management needs has been published and is available here. Proposals from either individuals or association management companies are being reviewed now. The review will continue until an appropriate candidate is found. For more information, please call the executive office at 540-374-5600.

Timing is key for mosquito control, contracts

Dr. Reid Ipser, Director of Technical Services, Nisus Corp.

Dr. Reid Ipser, Director of Technical Services, Nisus Corp.

Mosquitoes tend to be the most active in the early morning and early evening. In fact, during a warm summer night, biting females can emerge in droves. Spray the underside of bushes and shrubs in late morning. If your customer has a misting system, have it timed to spray in the early morning and late afternoon.

Populations can resurge more quickly than expected, so try to eliminate breeding areas such as standing water bird baths. For mosquito contracts, expect to visit the property at least every two to three weeks. Mosquito work can be good as an ad hoc add-on service; however, for year-long service, writing a separate service agreement is a good idea.

World Pest Day to be held in June

Logo: World Pest DayJune 6 is World Pest Day, a multinational event established to raise awareness among the public, government and media about the work that pest management professionals (PMPs) do on a daily basis to ensure public health and safety.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) is joining PMPs across the world in recognition and celebration of the impact the industry has on our everyday lives and well-being.

“Public health officials attribute the good quality of life we have today to three things, one of them being better pest control,” says NPMA CEO Dominique Stumpf, CAE, CMP. “Pests are much more than just a household nuisance, capable of transmitting sometimes fatal diseases and causing significant property damage if left unchecked. We strongly encourage homeowners to work with qualified pest control professionals to prevent and protect against pests.”

In addition to working with a professional pest control company, NPMA recommends communicating the following tips to homeowners, to better prepare the home against invading pests:

  • Eliminate sources of standing water around the house, including birdbaths and in clogged gutters to help reduce biting mosquito populations.
  • Seal any cracks on the outside of the home with a silicone-based caulk, including entry points for utilities and pipes.
  • Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around the foundation and windows.
  • Keep tree branches and shrubbery well-trimmed and away from the house. Overhanging branches can act as highways into the home.
  • Repair fascia and rotted roof shingles.
  • Keep mulch at least 15 inches from the foundation.
  • Keep basements, attics, and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.
  • Store garbage in sealed containers and dispose of it regularly.
  • Avoid leaving pet food out in dishes for long periods of time.

World Pest Day was established in 2017 and is co-sponsored by the NPMA and Orkin.

(The addition of the Zone Defense insecticide to help prevent damage to and infestation of the insulation by certain insect species does not confer insecticide protection outside of the Supreme Plus insulation. Use of this chemically treated insulation does not substitute for an approved termiticide product to control subterranean termites, which may be required by some states.) Sentricon’s Deader Than Dead Tour kicked off in March and has wrapped up its 2019 run.

Beginning during the National Pest Management Association’s (NPMA’s) Termite Awareness Week, the Sentricon Deader Than Dead Tour traveled across the country for the second year in a row, crossing 22 states. NPMA estimates termite damage costs U.S. homeowners $5 billion each year, so the Deader Than Dead Tour team hit the road to show homeowners how to best protect themselves from harm.

The six-week tour educated homeowners on the importance of preventive termite control and the value the Sentricon system provides. Featuring the “Coroner’s Caddy” — a 17-foot hearse outfitted with a 7-foot dead termite replica on its roof — the tour visited 12 cities during peak termite swarm season.

Stops on the Deader Than Dead Tour included:

Follow along with the Coroner’s Caddy and the Deader Than Dead Tour to learn more. Visit the official site for the Sentricon System Deader Than Dead Tour and follow the Sentricon system on Facebook and Twitter for post-tour updates.
