The First Aerosol Spray with Two Adulticides & Two IGRs!

Doxem® NXT is a broad-spectrum insecticide with four active ingredients and four unique modes of action.  Doxem NXT should be the first choice for rotational pest management programs. PMPs can now apply indoxacarb in an entirely new way – as an aerosol! With a flexible label that includes food handling uses, Doxem NXT is a premium ready-to-use solution for most pest problems. Since it’s formulated with no repellent active ingredients, this aerosol product is compatible with other non-repellent applications, including baits. Additionally, it effectively kills many listed pests on contact while leaving behind a residual.

Allergy Technologies presents at NAHRO National Conference

Joseph Latino, president of Allergy Technologies, led a panel discussion for affordable housing leaders at the national Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) National Conference and Exhibition. PHOTO: ALLERGY TECHNOLOGIES

Allergy Technologies President Joseph Latino led a panel discussion for affordable housing leaders at the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) National Conference and Exhibition in San Diego on Sept. 22.

Titled “Bed Bug Prevention and Control in Affordable Housing,” the panel included two pest management professionals; the president of a Philadelphia, Pa., affordable housing resident association; and a property manager; as well as a member of Philadelphia’s City Council who was participating virtually.

The discussion focused on the launch of Allergy Technologies Affordable Housing Control (ATAHC). ATAHC is a collaborative, proactive and facility-wide approach to bed bug prevention and control in affordable housing that has reduced bed bug incidents to near-zero levels in a 480-unit housing complex over a 30-month period.

“This turnkey strategy for the prevention and control of bed bugs in affordable housing was extremely well received, particularly because it not only saves time and money for those in affordable housing communities, ATAHC also improves ‘Quality of Life’ for residents and staff in the industry,” Latino said.

ATAHC and Prevention Program incorporated an initial facility-wide screening and subsequent treatment of infested residential units, immediately lowering the bed bug population. The installation of long-acting preventive measures property-wide ensures that the bed bug population stays under control.

The program was approved based on the success of a pilot program that was launched in the city in 2020.

Allergy Technologies will initially provide education for staff and residents as part of ATAHC’s implementation. In the pilot program, ATAHC was proven to cut bed bug incidents by over 99 percent in affordable housing communities over two years, with a goal of achieving zero bed bug infestations.

ATAHC was designed by Allergy Technologies to be an affordable and sustainable model of control and prevention of bed bugs in affordable housing. This first-of-its-kind pilot program launched has yielded results:

  • Greater than 99 percent of residential units had no bed bug reintroductions.
  • Facility managers realized a bed bug-related expense reduction of more than 40 percent.

Rentokil Terminix announced a donation of $200,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The donation commemorates the merger of the two pest control companies, Rentokil and Terminix, to form Rentokil Terminix in North America.

The check presentation event took place at the Terminix headquarters in Memphis, Tenn. It was led by executive leaders Andy Ransom, CEO of Rentokil Initial; Brett Ponton, CEO of Rentokil Terminix in North America; and John Myers, CEO of U.S. Pest Control. Richard C. Shadyac Jr., president and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, was present to accept the donation for St. Jude.

“We are so thankful for the support of Rentokil Terminix in the lifesaving mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,” Shadyac said in the news release. “This donation will help fuel St. Jude’s ongoing $12.9 billion strategic plan that grows investment in global childhood cancer research and care, all from right here in the great city we both call home.”

“We are delighted to make this donation to the children and families of St. Jude on behalf of our colleagues around North America,” Ponton said. “This donation is just another example of why our newly combined company makes so much sense. Each of our organizations were, and are now, even more committed to giving back to the communities where we live and work.”

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital accepts children from all 50 states and around the world. Thanks to generous donors, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food so they can focus on helping their child live. The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.

“I can’t think of a better way to kick off our exciting future than celebrating this core value we all share,” Ponton added. “We look forward to many more years of partnership with St. Jude and serving this cause.”

House flies not welcome at beer, malt manufacturing plants

Photo: Dr. Gerald Wegner, BCE-Emeritus

Photo: Dr. Gerald Wegner, BCE-Emeritus

In a manufacturing plant for beer and a neighboring plant for malt beverages, near Jaipur, Rajsathan, India, we had a house fly (Musca domestica) problem that was increasing at both sites daily. We have fewer chemical options than our pest management professional (PMP) counterparts in the U.S., and a particularly rainy spring this year made the problem worse. What’s more, in 2022 we were beginning to see resistance in some of the products we had historically been using with success.

Product rotation among different chemical classes helped with the resistance issue, but the sheer number of flies at these plants meant we had to double down on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This meant we could no longer ignore a major breeding source: byproduct waste that was dumped to “sun dry” in sludge beds and manure pits between the two plants. We worked with both clients to construct a structure around this waste area, so that flies no longer had unfettered access from pits to plants. Other IPM measures we implemented to crash the house fly population this year included:

  • A thorough steam cleaning of harborage areas, including unattended areas that previously were overlooked by the clients.
  • Mixing (per label standards) a malt base attractant with an adulticide spray.
  • Fly traps baited with sugar and malt extract, which produced great results.
  • Fly traps baited with pheromone, placed specifically to attract the flies away from the plants and other target areas.
  • Working with the clients to maintain, replace and/or install additional insect light traps (ILTs), plastic strip curtains and air curtains in production areas.

By adopting this more strongly integrated approach, the fly numbers went down considerably. We would still like to see more research and more options come to fruition for PMPs when faced with such accounts. But we are happy to report that even with what’s available on the market today, a little more time and effort spent at the account led to success.

I am very grateful to Gagan Malhotra, Syngenta India; Dr. Avinash Shulke, Pestomatic Control; Ujjwal Kumar, UPL Ltd.; Jitendra Khtri, A to Z Pest Control; Viren Merchant, Pest Control AMB; L.P. Nayak, Pest Control Expert; and Savin Chaturvedi for their support and consultation in conducting the case study and finding the solutions.

Third-quarter 2022 reader poll responses

Photo: Jezperklauzen/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Photo: Jezperklauzen/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

Since we last compiled Pest Management Professional (PMP) magazine poll results, we have received some excellent insights from readers in our monthly polls.

We also pose the same questions to our columnists and PMP editorial advisory board (EAB) members each month in print, to get their responses. The answers that don’t fit on the “Question of the Month” page for the print edition are always included in the online version. For example, what follow are some of our most recent polls, with a link to the contributor/EAB responses — and with a few of our favorite reader responses, too. Responses were edited for clarity.

July: What’s your favorite ant inspection tip?

  • PMP Contributor/EAB responses
  • “I like baits. Better than spraying. They find it and in turn it breaks down the nest.”
  • “Follow their trail. If you watch for a few minutes, those workers will ‘take you to their leader.’ Even if your ID skills are lacking, you can easily see which species you’re dealing with by looking at the nest.”
  • “Disperse grains of rice, or some other small pieces of food to foraging ants. Then, after they pick up a food piece, track them to the nest location. This works great on carpenter ants.”
  • “Know the time and place your ant forages most actively before deciding the treatment protocol for a job.”
  • “On a new account — or on that ‘I saw another ant’ problem account — make an initial trip around the structure baiting with sugar-based and protein-based baits. When you are done, go around the house again inspecting your baits. Add more bait where needed, and gather clues to where the ants are nesting. The protein bait particles will be moving in the direction of the nests (ants don’t eat solid food). With the sugar-based bait, the ‘full-bellied’ ants will point the way home also!”

August: What’s a good business tip when it comes to bed bug services?

  • PMP Contributor/EAB responses
  • “Make certain the prep work was done thoroughly.”
  • “Don’t be cheap.”
  • “Thorough application of chemicals is key. Use alternatives like heat treatment to enhance your professional image.”
  • “Stress the importance of preparation to customers. If you stress prep, and it is done sufficiently before every service, a bed bug job turns into big profit, for little time spent on location.”
  • “Find a company that employs K9s for inspections. Inspect at least two times a year.”
  • “Make sure you are identifying them correctly, then start the appropriate treatment.”
  • “Set appropriate expectations!”
  • “We tell customers, ‘Don’t panic, call us and relax because we can help. You can help by vacuuming all the places where you see them!’”
  • “We tell customers, ‘Do not put your luggage in the floor, bed or furniture in a hotel room. The best thing to do is hang it up. If you’re not able to hang it, do not leave your suitcase unzipped while in the room.’”
  • “Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. It greatly reduces callbacks.”

September: What advice do you give customers when providing tick control services?

  • PMP Contributor/EAB responses
  • “Even with multiple levels of control, you still need to check yourself, your kids, and your pets for ticks. Removing ticks promptly is the only certain way to avoid tick-borne diseases.”
  • “We always go with using many of the quality residual products available on the market, to protect our customers from getting Lyme disease.”

Getem Services celebrates 100 years

PHOTO: GETEM SERVICES

Norfolk, Va.-based Getem Services celebrates 100 years of service.

Founded in 1922, Luther Church, Sr. was inspired to start his own business serving the Norfolk community and beyond. When first found, Norfolk was a Navy town and Portsmouth, Va., sat across the Elizabeth River, while the cities of Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Suffolk, Va., did not exist.

Since that time, Getem Services has seen the Great Depression, World War II, Equal Rights, a man on the moon and many other history-making events, according to Getem Services’ website. The region has also grown well past a population of 1.5 million people.

The Getem Services family is soon to be led by the fourth generation of the Church family.

When the company first started 100 years ago, Getem Manufacturing specialized in the production of pesticides and cleaning products. Today, Getem Services serves homes and businesses across all of Hampton Roads for pest control and management. As its website notes, “its products and services have stayed on the cutting edge as they provide the best science has to offer to safely protect homes and health from pests.”

Third-generation owner Charlie Church has become well known in Hampton Roads as a community pillar and philanthropist. He has supported Old Dominion Athletics, numerous youth sports leagues and other charitable efforts. Charlie Church is a past-president and current board member of the Virginia Pest Management Association (VPMA), and he’s a member of the Virginia Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services as appointed by the governor. Charlie’s board service has also extended to Towne Bank and the Blocker YMCA in downtown Norfolk.

Charlie’s son Chaz and daughter Carley Church, both graduates of James Madison University, are deeply involved in the family business. Chaz and Carley are routinely in the field servicing clients for Getem Services, and they both have a hand in running the business side of the operation as well.

“It’s good for them to know all sides of the operation before they take over the business full-time as the fourth generation of ownership,” Charlie Church said in a news release detailing the company’s centennial.

6 initiatives to strengthen company culture

Bobby Jenkins

Bobby Jenkins, president of ABC Home & Commercial Services in Austin, Texas.

The saying goes “culture eats strategy for breakfast,” and I completely agree with that philosophy. Without the proper winning culture in any organization, regardless of how wonderful the strategy, success is difficult.

At ABC, like many companies in our industry, we prioritize our culture of being a family business. We aspire for everyone to immediately feel they are part of the ABC family, and are loved and valued.

MAKING CONNECTIONS

It’s very important for everyone to feel connected to the company and to one another. I firmly believe that the better we know one another, the better we will work together, and the more likely people are to stay with the company. Here are just six of the ways we foster this environment:

1. Help for new hires — Through our Anteater Buddy System, longtime employees sign up to be “buddies” to our new hires. They are not their managers, supervisors or trainers, they are just someone who makes the new person feel welcomed and part of the family. The buddies check in with each other on a regular basis and build a relationship. ABC is a pretty big organization, but we really want new people to feel connected and cared about.

2. Breakfast with the bosses — Another program we have is Breakfast with Bobby and Matt. This is probably the best valued half-hour we do. A couple of times a week, we invite six to eight employees from different departments in for breakfast tacos, fruit and juice with me and company VP Matt Burns. We sit around the conference table and share where we are from; information about our families, hobbies and interests; and just about anything else we want to share with the group. No business is discussed, just personal sharing so we can hopefully get to know one another better.

3. Weekly meetings — Every week, our leadership hosts a meeting that is filmed and then viewed by small groups and teams. We share weekly updates on revenue, review safety information, show a brief educational segment and share any important announcements. In addition, we have a “Meet the Anteaters” segment where we film two or three employees who simply tell a little about themselves. I love this program, and I believe it helps us to get to know one another a bit better. Some of our people are just hilarious, and very creative in telling everyone about themselves.

4. Special-interest clubs — Over the past five or six years, we’ve formed a variety of Anteater Clubs. These clubs have proven to be very popular for people to take on fun activities with their co-workers. We have a book club, adventure club, travel club, softball club, music club, brewery club, finance club, and hunting and fishing clubs. Of course, in Texas, the mother of all clubs is the BBQ club! All of the groups do a great job of fostering relationships and are lots of fun. The BBQ club is absolutely amazing, and the entire company often benefits from their endeavors.

5. Community service — One of the most important and valuable ways we foster and build culture and relationships is when we work together doing philanthropic work. This is a big part of our culture and what ABC is all about. When our folks are out in the community doing volunteer work together, it’s just magic. The bonding that takes place when we work together helping others is a statement about the kind of people we are. Some of our volunteer activities include the Heart Walk, bicycle rides for various charities, United Way, working to support organizations that prevent homelessness, working in food kitchens and pantries, and helping at the annual ABC Kite Festival.

6. Caring for the homeless — One charity activity we are all involved in is the assembly and distribution of ABC Care Bags. Each month, our office staff sets up an assembly line to fill resealable storage bags with toiletries, snacks, water and socks. These are distributed by our field staff to less fortunate folks on the street corners. This is a very simple and meaningful way for all of us to help others.

More than 100 golfers, volunteers and supporters with the North Carolina Pest Management Association (NCPMA) gathered on Oct. 5 at the Crooked Tree Golf Course in Brown Summit, N.C., for a charity golf tournament.

The tournament, dubbed “The 2022 Big Cup,” raised more than $10,000 to benefit NCPMA charities and the NCPMA Extension Program Endowment in honor Mike Waldvogel.

This was the inaugural year for the charity golf event designed to raise funds for various charities, including the NCPMA Extension Program Endowment in Honor of Dr. Mike Waldvogel at North Carolina State University (NCSU).

The Endowment supports the ongoing work of NCSU, focusing on supporting positions that directly contribute to the education of the pest management industry. Waldvogel is a retired Extension Associate Professor and Extension Specialist at NCSU’s Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology.

There were 27 golf teams and 19 sponsors, led by title sponsor Syngenta, raised more than $10,000.

“We are thrilled with the results of our first ever charity golf tournament,” said tournament director Kyle Franklin, who is a manufacturer representative for BASF Professional & Specialty Solutions, based out of Research Triangle Park. “The Crooked Tree Golf Course was a fantastic partner for this event, and we thank them for their hospitality and phenomenal course.”

NCPMA president Marie Horner, vice president of government affairs for Arrow Exterminators, added, “The Bug Cup allowed pest control professionals from across the state to come together to network and have fun while also contributing to a great cause.”

About the NCPMA

Founded in 1952, the North Carolina Pest Management Association (NCPMA) is the trade association representing the professional pest management industry in North Carolina. NCPMA promotes the continued cooperation and success of all pest management businesses in North Carolina.  NCPMA is the only statewide association dedicated to representing and educating North Carolina’s pest management professionals.

The new and improved TermidorHome.com educates customers on the benefits of a Termidor liquid treatment, while the all-new TrelonaHome.com details the benefits of the Trelona ATBS termite baiting system. Both websites focus on three key topics: the threat of termite infestations and why termite control is needed; specifics about BASF treatment options; and the importance of hiring a pest management professional to protect their homes.

Tips for tick control services

istock.com/Goldfinch4ever

We asked Pest Management Professional’s columnists and editorial advisory board members to give tips for tick control services. Here are some of the experts’ responses from our September 2022 print edition.

Please take a minute to answer our latest one-question poll on this topic and let us know how you promote disinfecting and sanitizing services: Reader poll: What advice do you give customers when providing tick control services?

PMP’s Editorial Advisory Board and Regular Contributors

Greg Baumann

Greg Baumann

Greg Baumann:“Keep vigilant year-round. A first frost isn’t going to make it suddenly stop, and we’ve seen tick activity in cold weather.”

Judy Black, BCE: “Don’t encourage wildlife to frequent your property. For example, bird feeders can attract more than birds. I also would reassure customers they have made a great choice to protect their property from ticks. The disease potential and consequences are real.”

Jerry Schappert, ACE: “The American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) is the most common tick we encounter, and they tend to stay close to the host. Keeping a keen eye on pet bedding, as well as using a vacuum, helps tremendously.”

Pete Schopen: “Keep your landscape trimmed back.”

Michael Broder: “Make sure to save any ticks you remove from your body in case your doctor needs to test them for potential diseases.”

Paul Hardy

Paul Hardy

Paul Hardy: “Ticks start outside, unless they are carried inside as hitchhikers. They are there basically because of wildlife. So, the best solution is to contact your wildlife professional for assistance. Wildlife is not standard pest control; it requires different licensing and education.”

Dr. Faith Oi: “Keep pets clean-cut during the summer and conduct regular tick checks on them, even indoor-only pets. It’s not uncommon for a human to bring them into the home, and when they fall off a shoe or clothing, they end up on the cat.”

Desiree Staubinger, BCE: “Keep pets clean-cut during the summer and conduct regular tick checks on them, even indoor-only pets. It’s not uncommon for a human to bring them into the home, and when they fall off a shoe or clothing, they end up on the cat.”

Business tips when it comes to bed bug services

One benefit of group living among bed bugs might be a favorable microenvironment. Photo courtesy of, and copyrighted by, Gene White, pmimages@earthlink.net

We asked Pest Management Professional’s columnists and editorial advisory board members to name business tips for bed bug services. Here are some of the experts’ responses from our August 2022 print edition.

Please take a minute to answer our latest one-question poll on this topic and let us know how you promote disinfecting and sanitizing services: Reader poll: What’s a good business tip when it comes to bed bug services?

PMP’s Editorial Advisory Board and Regular Contributors

Greg Baumann: “No matter how you perform service, show that it is about expertise. Teach your customer about bed bugs, and how and why you will perform the service.”

Judy Black, BCE:Charge appropriately for your time. Bed bug jobs require a lot of detailed inspection, treatment, and in some cases, preparation work. They can’t be done ‘fast.’ If you don’t value your time, your customers won’t, either.”

Jerry Schappert, ACE: “I’m not as young as I used to be, and today’s bed configurations are a lot heavier and awkward to flip. Consider making bed bug work a two-person job, which of course may affect your pricing.”

Michael Broder: “For bed bug services in multi-family housing and hotels, think of it more as an ongoing service program rather than a one-time treatment. Educate customers on realistic, ongoing challenges.”

Pete Schopen: “Have a standard operating procedure in place and stick to it. In the end, it will result in fewer callbacks and will help clients eradicate the bed bugs more quickly. Coaching compassion also helps your employees understand the client’s level of anxiety.”

Dr. Faith Oi:Don’t overpromise. Consider the extent of the infestation. One size does not fit all.”

Foster Brusca:Document, document and document, because if it is not documented, it did not happen. You really need to be documenting all bed bug inspections that are performed, especially when you are working at a multi-unit dwelling. You also need to provide a written bed bug service program and have the customer sign off on it, regardless of whether they approve or deny your program.”

Kurt Scherzinger, ACE:Be thorough and make sure you check every last crack or crevice, as doing so will help prevent callbacks.”

Doug Foster:Charge enough for your work. Many companies feel like they have to sell every job or keep their competitors from getting the work by pricing bed bug jobs cheap. It’s tough work; price accordingly.”

Highly trained salespeople make the best first impression

PHOTO: PETE SCHOPEN

Schopen Pest Solutions’ Sales Super Stars who handle inside sales are, from left, Justin Gutierrez, Jessica Baumann, Kimm Navarette, Stephen Fillmore, Jennifer Hargrove and Sean Rorig. PHOTO: PETE SCHOPEN

In June 2016, one of my techs, Phil, had to have complete reconstructive knee surgery.

After the successful procedure, he confided in me that he was concerned about the day-to-day pounding his good knee and reconstructed knee would take, crawling in tight spaces and attics. He just didn’t want to do it anymore. He still wanted to work for us in the office. I wasn’t opposed to that, but I only had nine employees at the time and I already had an office person.

As if on cue, my customer service representative (CSR) told me the next day she was having trouble keeping up with the routes and phones. I was still doing most of the sales, but the office phones rang a lot with reschedules and questions. So, I approached Phil about becoming our first-ever inside salesperson. His job would be to answer the phones, call back canceled clients and help mail our sales brochures.

SUPER SALESPEOPLE

Fast-forward to July 2022, and Schopen Pest Solutions now has five inside salespeople (or Sales Super Stars, as we call them) and a sales director. Many companies would call this a “call center,” but my people hate that term. Most of the phone calls do come through my sales team, and they take a lot of pressure off our client service advocates (CSAs).

Our Sales Super Stars do a lot:

  • Respond to Thumbtack and Home Advisor leads.
  • Follow up with Thumbtack and Home Advisor leads until they tell us to stop or they get a restraining order from a judge.
  • Respond to “chat leads” through our website.
  • Answer phone calls from Google+Local inquiries.
  • Answer phone calls from referrals.
  • Answer phone calls from clients with general questions.
  • Handle tons of data entry.
  • Attend weekly meetings with me.
  • Attend end-of-the-month training meetings.
  • Mail sales brochures to new clients who didn’t sign up for our quarterly programs.
  • Mail end-of-the-season renewal letters to our seasonal clients.
  • Call seasonal clients to convince them to renew.
  • Mail letters to former customers’ homes with new owners.

When a customer or potential client calls our offices, the phones only ring to our sales team and my desk (which, yeah, I know, basically makes us a call center). After the fourth ring, the phones ring to every person in the company. We have 22 phone lines for our two offices (and 50 cell phones, one for each employee in the company). Our salespeople are in our corporate office with my general manager, director of operations, billing director and me.

TRAIN FOR SUCCESS

Phil eventually left our company because he was frustrated with the lack of standard operating procedures (SOPs) regarding sales. Basically, I had told him “if the phone rings, sell them something.” That’s not exactly a great way to train an employee.

Today, our sales team understands the importance of calling our leads back with urgency; following up with the emails and texts; and communicating which sales leads are sold, being sold or not sold. Even our data entry has SOPs to ensure we have the right name, address, email and phone number.

Obviously, training is critical for salespeople. We want our team to have confidence when picking up the phone. We meet once a week to go over procedures and make sure they are being followed. We also have an entomology class each week on a specific pest (yellowjackets in July, stink bugs in October, etc.). Our sales team also learns about the products we use and how they are applied.

Another important item we cover in our sales meetings are real-life pest incidents — phone calls that come into our office that might have been odd or caused us a problem. By breaking down the phone calls, we can all agree on a way to handle that situation better in the future. Note: Whatever we train the salespeople on has to be the same for the billing department, CSAs, managers, technicians, supervisors, etc. Everyone at Schopen Pest Solutions is communicating the same information to our clients.

My sales team likes a challenge, and they can be competitive. To spice things up, I offer daily bonuses if our team members hit their goals. At Schopen Pest Solutions, I expect my sales assassins to hit $1,000 per day. If they do, they get a sales bonus on anything over $1,000. If they hit $2,000, the reward is greater. At our end-of-the-month-meetings, our top salesperson is recognized and gets a chance to win hundreds of dollars in our Queen-of-Hearts Board (if they pull the queen of hearts card, they win).

My inside salespeople are the first line of defense for our company, but they also are the first impression for many new clients.

A smart, articulate, engaging person sets the tone for the rest of the company. For many customers, the person answering the phone is Schopen Pest Solutions.

NPMA hosts Annual Day of Service

NPMAVolunteers from the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) led a number of charitable efforts during its time at PestWorld 2022 in Boston, Mass.

The Annual Day of Service, held Oct. 14, and sponsored by FMC, is a tradition among NPMA’s volunteer councils to give back to local organizations.

This year, the PestVets Council selected the New England Center and Home for Veterans as their charitable organization. With over 50 NPMA veteran members visiting the center, serving meals, delivering care packages, and meeting residents, PestVets raised over $43,000 for the center. The event was also sponsored by FMC.

PHOTO: PMP STAFF

PHOTO: PMP STAFF

The New England Pest Management Association (NEPMA) hosted a dinner reception for its members. Taking place at the Sheraton, event sponsors included Bell Labs, BASF and Evolve YT. During the event, President Tom Drapeau, ACE, of Freedom Pest Control in Merrimac, Mass., announced that Yankee Pest Control’s Galvin Murphy had donated $10,000 to the New England Center & Home for Veterans on behalf of the NPMA’s PestVets, to match the $10,000 donation raised by NEPMA. This donation not only funds 180 “Welcome Aboard” packages for new arrivals, which consists of toiletries and other essentials, but helps bring a bathroom at the Center into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

In addition, NPMA’s Leadership Network Community (LNC) held its annual Pop-a-Shot tournament for United to Beat Malaria. This annual event raises funds to provide bed nets and other life-saving tools in developing countries. This year’s tournament more than doubled last year’s total, with over $7,000 raised for the charity — which PMP columnist Dan Baldwin recently wrote about in the October issue.

The Professional Women in Pest Management (PWIPM) held its 13th 5k Fun Run/Walk. This year, the event raised $6,900 for Comfort Zone Camp and $1,210 for the PWIPM Professional Empowerment Grant. Comfort Zone Camp holds camps throughout the United States for kids ranging in ages 5-24 who have lost a parent, sibling, or guardian. These camps are offered to all kids everywhere and are free of charge. The run was sponsored by Abell Pest Control, Arrow Exterminators, Bell Laboratories, FieldRoutes, Gardex Chemicals, and PestWest.

PWIPM also hosted a Dress for Success (DFS) clothing drive at PestWorld. Attendees brought suits, dresses, shoes and more to a designated area outside the exhibit hall. The mission of DFS is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Each women receives one suit for an interview and once she obtains a job, she receives several more outfits to start her new job.

Each fall, mice and other rodents invade an estimated 21 million homes in the United States. They typically enter homes between October and February looking for food, water and shelter from the cold. And unique to previous years, with the influx of outdoor dining structures brought on by the pandemic, rodents have found the perfect place to dine, live and multiply, so consumers should pay extra attention to the attractants that entice rats and mice.

“Rodent infestations are among the top pest issues of the fall and winter seasons,” said Dr. Ben Hottel, an Orkin entomologist. “Not only are mice and rats a nuisance, but they are known to spread a variety of dangerous diseases, including Salmonella and Hantavirus.”

Make sure to inform customers about potential signs of rodent infestations including:

  • Droppings: Rodent droppings are often left behind in places where food is stored, such as kitchen cabinets or pantries, under sinks, inside chewed cardboard boxes, along baseboards and on top of wall beams
  • Gnaw marks: Mice are known to bite through walls, wood and wires. The damage to wiring within walls can increase the risk for a house fire.
  • Nests: Rodents prefer to nest in dark, secluded areas where there is little chance of disturbance. Be on the lookout for shredded paper products, cotton, packing materials and other fabrics, as house mice like to build nests out of these materials.
  • Rub marks: Rats tend to leave dark grease or dirt marks along walls and floorboards as they follow a trail throughout the home between their nest and food.
  • Strange noises: Scurrying in the walls or in the attic could mean a rodent family is present. Rodents are especially fond of attics as it’s an insulated area for nest building.

Orkin recommends the following tips to tell customers to prevent:

  • Store away food. Small crumbs and garbage are popular food sources, as are dry goods such as grains and cereals. These should be kept in sealed metal or glass containers to prevent contamination.
  • Declutter. Cardboard objects prove attractive to rodents, as they tend to chew them up for use in their nests. Take advantage of your extra time at home to clean and organize crowded spaces around the house.
  • Maintain your landscaping. Tall grass with adequate harborages, such as woodpiles next to the house, can be ideal habitats for rodents. Tree branches in contact with homes can also offer rodents easy access to the upper levels of your home where they may find a way into the attic.
  • Inspect both inside and outside your home. Keep an eye out for rodent droppings, burrows and rub marks along baseboards and walls. The sooner rodents are detected, the better.
  • Look for possible entry points. Seal any holes and cracks that are found around your home. Install weather strips around entryways, especially under doors, to help keep mice out of your home.

Run Your Business: Thank you, Coach!

A runner needs more than just talent and physical abilities to become a professional. It’s not as simple as that. They need to be trained and guided by the right people.

The right coaching staff can make the difference between ongoing success or quick failure.

I recently read about a female professional runner who finally got accepted into a renowned training group in California. She felt this was the gift that would help elevate her to the next level. The training was harder than anything she had ever done, but she pushed through day after day. Instead of seeing incremental improvements, she faced constant injuries and her race times became slower. Finally, she quit the coaching team and assumed her career was over. But then a friend invited her to run with a group in Colorado. The coach’s plans perfectly matched what she needed, and she began to run injury-free. Running was fun again, and she began to win races.

It doesn’t matter how much skill you have, you need the right coach to bring the best out of you.

The same is true with the ways BHB Pest Elimination trains and supervises people at our pest control company. For years, our “coaching” methods were off and not bringing out the best in our technicians. We have always prided ourselves on being customer driven, so we had service managers in charge of accounts rather than technicians. While this helped to keep customers happy, it did not give us proper tools to continue to guide and coach new technicians. It limited ways in which we could see each individual technician’s strengths, progress and weaknesses. Without the right guidance, we saw our employee turnover dramatically increase.

This year, my son Zack joined the company. He knew this was the main area that needed improvement. One of his first tasks was to revise our service manager team from customer driven to employee driven. He called it the Pod System. Instead of a service manager focusing on individual accounts, their focus was on technicians. It was a simple shift, but one that made all the difference.

We were surprised how quickly the small group instantly created a team spirit. Pest control is a solitary job, mainly working on your own. Being part of a small team and sharing experiences helped everyone. Plus, having a team manager working with the same techs daily brought out the best in everyone. Already we are seeing improvements across the board in new technicians and turnover has dramatically fallen.

It is so important to get the best people with the most talent, but we also need the right coach to guide them.

Have a great run!
