Is There Mold in Your Walls?

At some point you may find yourself wondering if you have mold in your walls. Perhaps you have been through a flood or identified a leak in your home that has been there for awhile. Now, as you start the cleanup, you may wonder what the least destructive (and least expensive) method is for determining the extent of the damage and if there is indeed mold in your walls.

Obviously, the sooner you identify any mold in your walls, the easier and more effective the remediation will be. You can, of course, rip out your drywall and replace it as the most conservative option. But there are some less drastic methods of determining the necessity of such actions.

Are your walls wet?

If your home has been through a flood or been exposed such that you can see or feel moisture, then it is merely a matter of time until mold takes hold in your walls. Therefore, the drywall does need to be removed and replaced as soon as possible in order to remove the potential for mold in your walls. Because moisture tends to wick up the drywall, you should always remove enough dry material above the water line to ensure you remove ALL moisture. There are several varying opinions on how much wall to remove. When my house flooded in Hurricane Harvey this year, the contractors removed a full foot above the water line. Of course, this is easily measured when there is a clear water line.

If it isn’t as obvious whether or not you have moisture in your walls or the extent of the moisture, there are moisture meters that can be purchased or rented that can help detect moisture and test kits to test for mold in your walls. You can even take swabs from your walls or cut out a small sample to send them off to be tested for mold. If all of this sounds a little daunting, you may choose to hire a mold remediation company or a mold inspection company to come out and perform a thorough inspection to determine if you have mold in your walls.

Are there visible signs of mold?

Mold leaves behind clues, especially if there is enough of it. One of the clues is the visibility of mold growth. Mold can discolor your walls and spread quickly. Even if the mold has been painted over, it will often show itself over time. If there are visible signs of mold, the chances are good that the mold is deep in your drywall. Some surface mold can be cleaned, but if the mold is inside the wall, it will need to be replaced. Perform a detailed inspection of your home if you suspect mold in your walls. Be sure to look at walls behind furniture and along baseboards.

Many homeowners are worried about the potential of black mold and spend lots of money testing once visible signs of mold are found. However, much of this testing isn’t necessary. While black mold is well known for the damage it can cause, all types of mold can affect your health and should be dealt with promptly and properly. Therefore, if you see visible signs of mold on your walls, you can skip the testing and simply replace and remediate.

Can you smell mold?

Mold tends to leave behind a distinctive smell. While the particular odor can vary with the type of mold you are dealing with, you probably already know what the general smell is and would be able to identify it rather easily. Here are a few different ways that people have described the smell of mold.

  • Have you ever walked through a dense forest? There is a damp and earthy smell that you may recognize when you pass by decaying wood from a tree that has fallen over or a pile of decaying leaves. The smell probably isn’t strong if you keep your distance because you are outdoors. When you smell something similar indoors, the odor will be a lot stronger because there isn’t as much circulation of fresher air.
  • Have you ever forgotten to empty your gym bag after a sweaty cardio session? The smell of dirty or sweaty, wet socks is similar to the smell of mold. So, if you haven’t been to the gym lately this smell may signal mold in your walls.
  • Have you ever been in a really old building such as a library? There is a certain odor that smells aged and old or damp. If you notice this smell in your home, you may have mold in your walls.
  • Some types of mold may smell even worse. They have been described as having a cat urine smell.

If you smell something similar to the above or notice a new smell in your home, you may want to investigate a little further into the potential of mold in your walls. Don’t let your nose become accustomed to the new smell. Be sure to look into it right away.

Hard to Reach Walls

While it may be relatively easy to identify mold in your walls, sometimes it can be rather difficult. There are some walls that are much more difficult to access such as the walls behind your shower or cabinets. If you suspect moisture has reached these walls, it may take a little more work to determine if there is a mold problem or a potential for mold growth. However, if the drywall has been exposed to moisture because of a leak, flood or inadequate ventilation in the room, mold can certainly grow. Because of its hidden location, you may not see or smell it. For these types of location, you will have to get a little more destructive by removing the shower or cabinets for an inspection. Some moisture meters may be able to help pick up the presence of moisture. Unfortunately, oftentimes there aren’t a lot of options outside of removal in these situations.

Conclusion

No one wants to think about sharing a home with mold. Unfortunately, it is a reality for many home owners. Mold loves moisture, and moisture is a part of our daily lives. From leaks to floods to regular old condensation, moisture is everywhere. Mold can start to grow very quickly and become difficult and expensive to remove if left unattended.

If you suspect mold in your home, you have to check for mold in your walls as well. Because mold loves to grow in porous material, mold in your walls is a very common issue. If you can see mold on your walls, there is a good chance it is inside your walls as well. It won’t do you any good to remove the surface mold if there is mold inside.

Mold Proofing Your Home

There may be a million other ways you’d rather spend your money as a homeowner, but mold proofing your home is one of the best investments you can make. Mold can destroy your home and cost you lots of money as well as cost you or a family member your health. There are many preventions you can put into place in order to preserve your home and protect your family.

Reasons Why You Should Invest in Mold Proofing your Home

Mold can be sneaky. It can grow without us ever knowing it is there. Once it takes hold in your home, it can be difficult to remove. Mold remediation can be expensive, and the longer it remains in your home, the more expensive it can be to remove. Here are just a few reasons you should consider mold proofing your home before you get caught in a moldy situation.

Prevention is Cheaper than Remediation

As with most things in life, prevention is a good thing. Mold proofing is a preventative measure that can save you thousands of dollars. By investing in professional mold proofing, you will avoid potential costs down the line. It is a form of insurance that can protect your wallet.

Protect your Home

Once you get mold in your home, you will a lot of potentially expensive remediation to do. On top of that unexpected expense, the value of your home may take a drastic hit. If you choose to sell your home in the future, potential buyers may turn away from it due to the history of mold. Preventing mold is one way to protect the value of your home.

Your Health is at Risk

While dollar signs are important and can impact your life, your health and the health of your family is the most important thing to preserve. Mold can cause serious health issues and even death in certain situations. Depending on the type and severity, it can impact affected people for years or for their entire lives. Mold proofing is a great way to keep your family safe from this silent attacker.

Mold Proofing your Home

Even the cleanest and newest of homes are susceptible to mold growth. Molds reproduce by releasing microspores in the air that eventually settle on surfaces and grow. Sometimes you will be able to see or smell the mold growth, but oftentimes it can go undetected for years. Luckily there are several steps you can take yourself to control the growth of mold in your home. Mold proofing is a great way to protect your money, home and health!

Control the Environment

Molds grow in all different temperatures, but most molds grow best in warm temperatures and high humidity. You can control the environment in your home to help prevent mold growth. Keep the relative humidity low and maintain temperatures in the low 70’s. Close doors and windows during warm weather. Run your air conditioner and/or a dehumidifier to keep humidity low. Add desiccants to areas such as closets and clothing storage to keep moisture out. Resist overfilling storage areas so that air flow is maintained.

Molds also require moisture to grow. A very important part of mold proofing your home includes keeping moisture at bay. Moisture can come from anywhere. From the moisture in the air to water leaks to condensation, even the smallest amount of moisture can help mold grow. While maintaining the temperature and humidity in your house is vital, you must also stay on top of home maintenance and inspection to ensure sources of moisture are dealt with right away.

Control the Cleanliness

By having a weekly cleaning routine set up for your home, you not only keep surfaces clean and mold free, but you also are able to identify any moisture or mold right away (when it is easier to remedy). Mop hard floors. Vaccum carpet with a small particle or HEPA filter. Dust and use a damp cloth to clean windowsills, around doors and window frames. Keep pet bedding clean and fresh by frequently washing it in hot water. Keep houseplants wiped down and use fresh soil. Molds thrive on organic materials so the cleaner your house is, the less the likelihood of mold growth.

Control Natural Disaster Mold Potential

Part of mold proofing your home is dealing with the aftermath of a flood or other event such as a water leak that leaves your home wet for more than a few hours. You must step in quickly and clean, dry and disinfect before mold takes over. If your home flooded, you will have to remove the wet flooring and wall materials and thoroughly dry out your home. You may want to bring in professional mold remediators to inspect your home for mold prior to reinstalling walls and floors.

Discard wet materials that cannot be effectively and quickly dried out. Resist the urge to save items if they cannot be completely sanitized and dried out after getting wet. While your items may be expensive, the cost of mold can cost a lot more.

Perform Inspections

Mold proofing your home can (and should) include periodic inspections of your home. Mold can take hold quickly and go unnoticed in areas that are not frequently visited (attic, basement etc). Save a spot on your calendar to walk through these areas at least monthly. Leave room against walls and ceilings so that you can adequately see cracks and crevices. Inspect your roof at least annually and after any hail or large wind storm. Inspect the insulation around windows and ensure the insulation in your walls is sufficient. Keep a watchful eye for signs of a potential mold problem such as odor or visible discoloration.

Conclusion

Mold is an opportunist, and it will take hold in your house given the slightest opportunity. Don’t give mold the opportunity to affect your house or the lives of those who live in it. Some simple mold proofing can go a long way when it comes to keeping your home mold free. Follow these simple suggestions and keep your family and pocketbook safe.

How to Deal with Attic Mold

How often do you spend time in your attic? Perhaps once a year to retrieve Christmas decorations? If you are like most homeowners, you probably don’t visit this non-living space very often. Because of that, attics are often left out of regular home inspections and maintenance. The bad news is that attic mold (along with a multitude of other issues) can easily be overlooked. It is important that you take the time to periodically visit your attic space and give it a thorough once over. Mold attic can quickly become dangerous because it often goes unnoticed until it begins to penetrate the rest of your house. By the time that happens, there is likely quite a bit of mold and may already be affecting the health of your family.

How Does Attic Mold Get There?

Just because you don’t frequent your attic doesn’t mean that it isn’t susceptible to attic mold. In some ways, this makes the space more susceptible. Mold starts the same way no matter where it grows. If the conditions are right (moisture/humidity levels), mold begins to grow. There are many different ways that moisture and humidity can get out of control in your attic. Here are a few examples.

Roof Leaks

Roofs leak. Whether your roof is aging, you have a build up of debris or it has been damaged by hail or a tree limb, once a roof leak begins moisture will enter your home each and every time it rains. The rainwater will penetrate the roof and cause a build-up of moisture that will sit for several days. Conditions become right for attic mold to begin to grow. You should always inspect your roof after large storms and keep tree limbs cut back to prevent damage and debris build up. If your roof has reached the age where it needs to be replaced, begin to budget for the replacement sooner rather than later. The sooner you can repair a roof leak, the less likely you will end up with attic mold.

Poor Ventilation

Improper ventilation is a common cause of attic mold, especially in the winter months when we run our heaters a lot. Because heat rises, our attics are often warm. If that warm is not properly ventilated, however, it begins a process that begs attic mold to form and grow. The warm air becomes trapped in the attic space and condensation begins causing moisture in your attic. Humidity levels rise and mold begins to grow. Homeowners should inspect their attic spaces to ensure proper ventilation exists so that humidity levels stay low during the winter months.

Moisture Vents Pump to the Attic

All over our homes, we have moisture vents. Our kitchens have them. Our bathrooms have them. Our laundry rooms probably have them. All of these vents should pump to the outside of the house rather than to the attic. However, many homes still have vents that are improperly installed to pump to the attic. If your vents pump to the attic, they will drive up moisture and humidity levels making attic mold a real possibility in your home.

What to do if Attic Mold is Present

If you have recently made your annual trip to the attic and have discovered mold, you need to take action right away. Depending on how much mold is present and how much damage has been caused, your actions may vary a bit. But the process of mold remediation and removal must begin right away to prevent further damage and further growth.

Determine the Moisture Source

You must determine what caused the moisture build up. Otherwise, removing the mold will only be a temporary solution. The moisture will continue, and the mold will regrow fairly quickly. You will waste your time, energy and money if you do not find the source of the moisture. Finding the source of moisture that caused your attic mold will also help you assess how much mold you have in your attic (which may help you determine the best next step).

DIY Mold Removal vs Professional Mold Remediation

You must assess the situation and decide the proper steps. Will you hire a professional mold remediation company or will you attempt to remove the mold yourself? Attic mold is a serious condition just as it would be if you had found it anywhere else in your home. Mold removal can be tricky so do your research and decide the best solution for your home and the attic mold that is present.

Future Prevention

No matter how you choose to deal with the attic mold in your home, you must also determine how to prevent its reoccurrence in the future. How will you prevent moisture buildup? How will you inspect your roof for leaks going forward? How will you perform inspections and walkthroughs to check for attic mold in the future? As part of the mold remediation and recovery process, you must focus on having a prevention mindset. Come up with a plan that will protect you and your family from dangerous mold situations.

Conclusion

Hindsight is always 20-20, and that theory applies to everything – including attic mold. Prevention is always the easiest way to handle situations in your home, but sometimes we overlook the proper prevention activities. That is just human nature. If attic mold is present in your home, you simply need to take the proper steps. Start with a thorough inspection of your attic. Check for mold. Check for ventilation. Check for roof damage. Hire a mold remediation company or remedy the mold yourself if you determine you can handle it. Come up with an inspection plan going forward.

As homeowners, it is important to take responsibility for the maintenance of our homes. Even though we know that as a fact, sometimes we forget the smaller things such as our attics.

So, when is the last time you visited your attic and looked for attic mold? Is it time to reassess the sources of moisture in your home? Is it time to replace your roof?
