NEPMA recognizes Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources

LOGO: NEPMA

LOGO: NEPMA

The New England Pest Management Association (NEPMA) has recognized the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) for regulatory improvements to the pesticide program.

The department was presented with a plaque for making significant improvements administering the state’s pesticide program. The award was announced at this month’s pesticide board meeting on March 22 by NEPMA President Tom Drapeau.

Over the past several years, the department has moved away from a paper-based program, which was relying on mailing various forms and applications, to becoming nearly all electronic. The latest digital-friendly improvement was the transfer of the applicator exam processing and tests moving to a 100 percent computer-based process. With that change, applicator and license exams are now available on-demand 24/7.

“No longer are hiring decisions based on fixed exam dates at limited locations around the state. Hiring decisions can now be made based on needs of the business,” Drapeau said in a news release. “As of March, about 400 people have taken the applicator exam online, with few problems reported. These improvements stand to save pest control businesses significant expense.”

The NEPMA represents the pest control industry in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. The association is comprised of more than 140 pest management professionals and affiliated industry suppliers. The MDAR is the state lead agency regulating pesticides in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Pesticide Board creates pesticide public policy, advises the agency and registers pesticides.

Neon hairs on hares? Science says yes

PHOTO: JOSLINP/ISTOCK/GETTY IMAGES PLUS/GETTY IMAGES

PHOTO: JOSLINP/ISTOCK/GETTY IMAGES PLUS/GETTY IMAGES

When the Easter Bunny glows pink and red, you know you either got into a bad batch of jelly beans, or perhaps you’re watching the biofluorescence of the nocturnal springhare (Pedetidae).

Yep, in the Feb. 18 edition of Scientific Reports, distilled for the masses over at LiveScience.com, “researchers are building a growing (and glowing) list of fluorescent mammals, and a new addition, an endearing jumping rodent called the springhare, just leaped into the spotlight, its brown fur lighting up in swirling disco patterns of pink and orange under ultraviolet (UV) rays.”

Biofluorescence is defined as “the absorption of short wavelengths of light and re-emission of longer wavelengths of light.” According to an article in Science News, the team looked at both museum specimens and live captive-bred specimens of Pedeitdates:

All individuals exhibited orange to red biofluorescence, although the scientists did observe variation in the intensity of biofluorescence across individuals.

“We observed fluorescence of individual springhare hair fibers and variation in the presence of fluorescence within individual hair fibers, suggesting that the fluorescence is distributed through the thickness of the cuticle and absent from the core and tips of hair fibers,” they said.

“The fact that biofluorescence was not easily removed via washing and was present on museum specimens from 1905 suggests that the biofluorescence is a part of the physical anatomy of the hair fibers for Pedetidae.”

Now, these hares won’t be crossing paths with your technicians anytime soon, unless you have accounts in southern Africa or in parts of Kenya or Tanzia. Still, researchers were curious about the glow, which is also found in certain species of flying squirrels, opossums and platypi, as well as fish, reptiles, birds and other animals. They are doing more research to build upon the theory that a natural lighting from within could be ecologically helpful for nocturnal animals.

Atlanta, Ga.-based Arrow Exterminators has acquired Tomasello Pest Control, with offices in West Palm Beach, Fla. This merger strengthens Arrow’s presence in West Palm Beach and enables Arrow to service more residential and commercial customers along the coast from Jupiter to Boynton Beach, Fla.

The company was founded in 1928 by Rudy and Blanche Tomasello, and later owned by their daughter Regina Tomasello Doll. Current President Chuck Doll took over as president of Tomasello in 1997. Tomasello has been a full-service company since the early days, offering general pest, lawn and ornamental, termite and fumigation services.

“Tomasello’s history mirrors that of Arrow Exterminators, with both being family companies,” Chuck Doll said in a news release. “When it came time to find a company to acquire our family business, it was an easy decision to select Arrow. The sale of a business is always difficult for company owners. You want the acquiring company to take care of your employees like family. In the era of investment bankers and quick deals, finding a purchaser who has your employee’s best interest in mind is very difficult. Tomasello vetted 32 potential buyers, and no other company gave us the confidence that they would treat our employees as their own.”

About Arrow Exterminators
Family-owned and -operated since 1964, Atlanta-based Arrow Exterminators boasts a modern fleet of more than 2,300 vehicles, 138 service centers and 2,600 team members, with revenues exceeding $285 million. In 2020, it was named the No. 1 Top Workplace in Atlanta by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. With QualityPro Certification by the National Pest Management Association, the company offers environmentally responsible services to protect homes and businesses of customers in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

Feeling Short-Handed? You’re Not Alone

If we’re all honest with ourselves, we have to agree most small businesses are short-handed. In my 30 years of business consulting, I would estimate 40% to 50% of my client/franchisee interactions have something to do with staffing. Short-staffed, as a condition, can be caused by a number of other conditions, and “short-handed” can come in many forms.

Terminix acquires Pest Solutions

Eric Ufer

Eric Ufer has a Tesla in his fleet of Pest Solutions cars. PHOTO: PEST SOLUTONS

Memphis, Tenn.-based Terminix has acquired Pest Solutions, Beaverton, Ore. Terms were not disclosed; The Aust Group, Orlando, Fla., represented Pest Solutions.

As Pest Management Professional magazine reported in a profile in 2019, Pest Solutions Founder Eric Ufer got into the industry after a 17-year career on Wall Street and a few years of owning rental properties. Ufer and his team adopted the slogan “Green As Can Be” to emphasize their eco-friendly approach to pest management.

“When I decided I wanted to explore selling my company, it just made sense for me to utilize The Aust Group,” Ufer said in a news release. “They learned our company inside and out, and were able to tell our story extremely well.”

“It was an honor to represent Eric in the sale of his business, and we are confident that Pest Solutions will be a strong catalyst for growth in the Portland market,” Principal Stuart Aust said in the news release.

ABOUT PEST SOLUTIONS

As noted on its website:

In 2006, Eric Ufer, Pest Solutions LLC’s founder, was hit for the first time with bed bugs on his rental properties. Costs went through the roof and the rental property revenues declined.  This event had a profound effect on how he  looked at pests and the risk they presented to his business. Eric had to look at the traditional pest control services he was paying for, its efficacy, the inconvenience to his tenants, and costs – both in lost revenues and sky high pest control charges.

This led to our developing many additional solutions that are green and have been utilized by us with huge success. We founded Pest Solutions LLC with the focus of resolving and preventing bed bug, cockroaches, ants, bees, fruit flies, fleas, termites, rodents, and other pest issues for both residential and commercial properties.

Money opportunities abound, if you’re willing to work for them

PHOTO: PETE SCHOPEN

By fourth grade, the author was both a groovy dresser and a full-fledged chaw addict. PHOTO: PETE SCHOPEN

When I was 9 years old, I started chewing tobacco.

I know what you’re thinking: “What 9-year-old chooses to dip chaw over Fun Dip?”

The truth is that four decades ago, being a kid was very different. “The Bad News Bears” came out in 1976, showing the coach drinking and his players smoking. Preteens used to jump bikes over their supine-stationed siblings. Kids were able to stay out late playing Ghost in the Graveyard. In June 1978, a month after my 9th birthday, I found a package of Beech-Nut chewing tobacco in the back of the family freezer.

I snuck the pouch out of the house while my parents were at work. I threw up the first time, but after a month I got the hang of it and I was as lethal with my spit as Clint Eastwood. That summer, me and my buddies had marathon sessions with Monopoly, each of us with a spit-cup between our legs.

Chaw is a messy and disgusting habit, and I loved every minute of it, until scary pictures of mouth cancer shown to me by my high school football coach cured me of it. Also, teenage girls tend to be turned off by yellow teeth.

But back to 9-year-old me: I needed to replace the tobacco that I stole from the freezer, and I wanted a stash of my own. So, my friends and I would wake up at 6 a.m. on Saturdays, and ride our bikes to every bar in town. We’d dumpster-dive for bottles and aluminum cans. The recycling center was less than a mile from my house, so we would get there at 8 a.m. to drop off bags of cans. We collected so many recyclables, we needed to tie a red wagon to the back of my bike to haul our booty and get some cash.

From there, we would ride over to the convenience store and buy our tobacco. At first, we told the store owner it was for our dads (another thing from the ’70s), but after a while, he didn’t care and had the Beech-Nut, Happy Days, Skoal and Copenhagen waiting for us.

FOR THE LOVE OF MONEY

I’m telling you this tale from my youth because I’ve always liked making money. I realized at a young age that if I wanted something, I had to have money to get it. I’ve also always understood that there are a million different ways to earn money.

I think in our industry, we worry so much about “packages” and “bundling” that we don’t leave ourselves much room to upsell. That’s a huge mistake that many start-up (and a few established) companies make, because it is like leaving money on the table.

Obviously, we want to turn our new clients into long-lasting quarterlies. And once we have them as quarterly clients, we want to upsell them on our other products. But what about one-and-dones, like wasp jobs? Do you have a follow-up procedure in place to reach out to wasp clients, cockroach clients, bed bug clients? Never let them slip through your fingers without at least attempting to get them signed up for regular treatments.

TARGETING ONE-TIMERS

In October 2020, Schopen Pest Solutions mailed power spray order forms for 2021 to all of our stinging insect clients from the previous summer. In 2020, we serviced 472 stinging insect jobs. Of those 472 clients, 50 accepted our order forms, and signed up for a full summer of exterior treatments in 2021. We will make nearly $15,000 more this year simply by switching more than
10 percent of those one-and-dones to regular-paying clients. Most of them will renew for years to come.

Some other ways we grab additional business include:

  • Sending “welcome” letters to new homeowners who moved into a house that our company had previously serviced.
  • Mapping out communities where we currently have clients with mosquitoes, voles, pavement ants, etc., and hitting them with mailers.
  • Calling rodent clients from the previous year who canceled due to a lack of funds or a lack of a problem, and seeing whether they want a yearly check-up. This is usually done during the winter when it is slow.
  • Mailing “Early Bird Wasp” forms to clients who didn’t respond to our power spray letter in October. In other words, the 422 stinging insect clients who didn’t respond to our initial letter are getting the form as I type this in mid-February.

When our technicians are in need of extra work hours during the winter, we have them call our power spray clients who haven’t renewed yet. In December alone, our techs signed up more than $50,000 worth of exterior treatments for 2021. As a team, we also offer upsells for:

  • Baiting for silverfish in attics.
  • Annual exterior ant treatments.
  • Quarterly, exterior-only rodent services.
  • Exclusion work for rodents.

You may wonder whether I have any addictions since chaw is no longer one of them. Well, I do: the Robinhood phone app. I’m finding new money with crypto!

In praise of NYC PMPs

PHOTO: STOCKPHOTO52/ISTOCK / GETTY IMAGES PLUS/GETTY IMAGES

PHOTO: STOCKPHOTO52/ISTOCK / GETTY IMAGES PLUS/GETTY IMAGES

Throughout the world, pest management professionals (PMPs) battle cockroaches, ants, rodents and a wide variety of other pests. But to do it in New York City, or NYC, requires overcoming a unique set of challenges. As a native New Yorker, I am familiar with the challenges PMPs face when working in the largest city in America. When you hear “You have to be great to make it in the Big Apple,” it’s true.

Here are 15 situations that NYC PMPs deal with on a daily basis:

1. There is no place to park. Most PMPs ride the subway. They pack a complete set of tools and products into a carrying case.

2. More items are locked up than not. There is no master key, because it is too high-risk to have one key that can open everything.

3. Unions are strong. You cannot use your own ladder, open up a locker, or check inside an electrical box without the aid of a union member.

4. Patience is a must. Trying to get maintenance people to meet you in a particular location of a building at a specific time is rare. They are spread thin helping others. You wait and wait. This all eats into the time required for what you can accomplish for the day.

5. Receiving all-access is rare. Within one building, a section may be off-limits because it’s under construction, there is a major break in a sewer line, an elevator is out of order, etc.

6. NYC is not a new city. Oklahoma was not even a state when NYC began crumbling. For instance, old plumbing lines are replaced with new ones, but the old ones remain hidden and open in wall voids.

7. NYC has three sewer systems. There’s the new one being used, an older one no longer in use, and a third one no one knows about until someone hits it during underground construction. Then, hundreds of rats come pouring out.

8. Building design can be an issue. Some restaurants have been redesigned three or four times, with wall voids behind wall voids. PMPs have to drill into these voids to reach rodent and cockroach populations, established for many decades.

9. NYC is a land of many cultures and languages. NYC is near where the Statue of Liberty sits. My own parents came to this city, and had to learn English. Try explaining to someone standing on a piece of raw meat in a commercial kitchen why he cannot do this. He comes from a culture where they are used to doing this.

10. Garbage is a huge issue. We all know about garbage strikes and how plastic bags of garbage pile up in the street. What about a garbage chute that has backed up eight stories high? People empty garbage out the window into alleyways and sidewalks. Papers and pet poop are evident in many areas.

11. New Yorkers are a special breed. Many New Yorkers believe you can never get all the cockroaches or rodents out of their building, so they give up.

12. Customers have high expectations. For those customers who haven’t given up, you must answer an emergency call within the hour — day or night, regardless of weather.

13. The red tape is thick. In addition to federal and state agencies, the local health department and New York City Fire Department mandate a list of regulatory stipulations that are strongly enforced.

14. NYC has a people problem. To feed and shelter 8 million people, think of how many trucks enter the city daily to bring new materials. What about the 1 million-plus people who come to work from Connecticut, New Jersey, Long Island and Pennsylvania? Then there are the tourists — not as many as there were pre-pandemic, but slowly climbing back in number.

15. Pest problems gain traction. When a new or old pest species occurs, it very quickly spreads. In the early 2000s, NYC’s Housing Authority and Transit Authority found this out with bed bugs, for example.

16. NYC becomes an early target. Similarly, when a new disease related to pest control occurs, it likely will arrive in NYC first. Airplanes and ships bring people and supplies from the rest of the world in numbers that cannot be screened. You can be deep in the Amazon on Wednesday and in downtown Manhattan on Thursday. That may be true for any city, of course, but NYC experiences this pressure every day.

NYC PMPS ARE TOUGH

Does this mean that NYC PMPs give up? Nope. The tough get going when the going gets tough. We may never win the war in the end, but we at least win battles and keep the city from becoming completely overrun.

The 7 Ps of evergreen companies

PHOTO: ANNA MUNOZ

From left, the author and his brothers Raleigh and Dennis grew up in an evergreen company owned by their dad, the late PMP Hall of Famer Bob Jenkins Sr. (Class of 2005). PHOTO: ANNA MUNOZ

One of the best things about the pest management industry is that each of us has the opportunity to build the type of business we choose. This industry, and the thousands of companies that are in it, are incredibly innovative and entrepreneurial. We all have the ability to create a business that is a reflection of who we are and the values that are important to each of us.

Many of us are involved in multi-generational family businesses, and our core values generally reflect what is important to the family. We aspire to develop businesses with a deep purpose, that are built to last, and make a significant impact. We want to build companies that can serve our customers, the people we work with, our communities and our families.

The path we have chosen for ABC Home & Commercial Services follows the principles of an evergreen business. Such businesses are built with a long-term outlook and focused on people. Owners have no desire to sell or take outside investments, and measure success on how well they deliver on their mission, not just revenue and profits.

The owners of evergreen companies aspire to make a long-term impact, building companies that will thrive for more than 100 years. The pest management industry is filled with many owners and entrepreneurs who fit this model perfectly.

There are seven defining characteristics of evergreen entrepreneurs and the companies they build. They are referred to as the 7 Ps:

  1. Purpose. Being passionately driven by a compelling vision and mission.
  2. Perseverance. Having the ambition and resilience to overcome obstacles and keep pursuing the mission indefinitely into the future.
  3. People first. Engaging a workforce of talented associates who excel as a team and are motivated by the mission and the culture, as well as the total compensation in the belief that by taking care of them, they will take care of the customers, suppliers, partners, communities and their families.
  4. Profit. Not mistaking profit as the sole purpose of a business, but recognizing it is essential to survival and independence, and the most accurate measure of customer value delivered.
  5. Private. Taking advantage of a closely held private company’s ability to have longer investment horizons, greater confidentiality around strategies, and more operating flexibility than public or exit-oriented businesses.
  6. Paced growth. Having the discipline to focus on long-term strategy, balance short-term and long-term performance, and grow steadily and consistently from year to year.
  7. Pragmatic innovation. Embracing a continuous-improvement process built around taking capital efficient, calculated risk to innovate creatively within constraints.

Each of these principles are inherent in so many pest management companies that I know and admire — companies that are purpose–driven, independent and long-term oriented. I believe these companies are tremendously appealing for many prospective customers, partners and employees. I also believe that a company that is focused on its community and its people is extremely attractive for both potential customers and potential employees.

The opportunity to do what we choose to do, and to build what we want to build, is special and inherent to our industry. We can all build companies that are long-term and evergreen: truly built to last.

JENKINS, who rotates this column with his brothers Raleigh and Dennis, is president of ABC Home & Commercial Services, Austin, Texas. He can be reached at bjenkins@goanteater.com.

SenesTech, Liphatech to develop new ContraPest formulation

ContraPest is currently used in liquid form in bait stations. IMAGE: SENESTECH

SenesTech, a developer of proprietary, next-generation technologies for managing animal pest populations through fertility control, is collaborating with Liphatech, a global leader in the research, manufacturing and distribution of pest control products, to develop a non-liquid formulation of rat “birth control” product ContraPest. Both companies will be contributing resources to the project.

“The ContraPest brand provides proven benefits when incorporated into integrated pest management programs. Its liquid formulation is highly palatable to rats and highly effective. We continually seek to expand our offerings to customers, and an additional formulation such as soft bait is a logical next step,” SenesTech CEO Ken Siegel said in a news release.

Brandy Pyzyna, SenesTech’s VP of Research and Regulatory, noted in the news release that the scope of work “will include all planning, execution and efficacy testing for a non-liquid formulation of ContraPest based on the soft bait matrix developed and marketed by Liphatech. We have a detailed, cooperative work plan that we will initiate immediately.”

ABOUT SENESTECH

Founded in 2003 by two scientists with a deep love for animals, Drs. Loretta Mayer and Pat Hoyer, Flagstaff, Ariz.-based SenesTech has developed an innovative method for managing animal populations through fertility control.

Its lead product, ContraPest, targets the reproductive capabilities of both sexes in rat populations, inducing egg loss in female rats and impairing sperm development in males. Using a proprietary bait delivery method, ContraPest is dispensed in a palatable liquid formulation that promotes sustained consumption by rat communities. It is designed, formulated and dispensed to be low hazard for handlers and non-target species such as wildlife, livestock and pets, where the active ingredients break down rapidly.

ABOUT LIPHATECH

Headquartered in Milwaukee, Wis., Liphatech is a researcher, manufacturer and distributor of several pest control brands, including FirstStrike, Resolv, TakeDown, Generation, BlueMax, Maki and the Aegis line of bait stations. It was founded in France in 1946 as Lipha, to develop anticoagulants for the treatment of heart patients. It developed the first of its active ingredients, chlorophacinone, in the 1960s and branded it as Rozol, a family of products that includes grain and pelleted products for field and structural use and a tracking powder for use in and around structures. In the 1970s, Liphatech developed bromadiolone, a second-generation rodenticide active ingredient.

Reminders for keeping cockroaches away

Noel McCarthy, VP Advertising, Noble Pine Products Co.

Noel McCarthy, Staff Writer, Sterifab

Cockroaches are fast, devious and awfully hard to kill, so be prepared for some frustration as you embark upon your “seek and destroy” mission. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Cockroaches tend to congregate in certain areas, drawn by the odor of their own feces.
  • You can quickly spot cockroach droppings; they look a lot like small specks of spilled pepper.
  • If you want to catch cockroaches “in the act,” be prepared to work at night, when these pests are more active and searching for food.
  • If you have to hunt during the daytime, look in cracks, crevices and other dark, out-of-the-way places, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.

Tell your customers to do the following, to help keep cockroaches at bay:

  • Store food in sealed containers.
  • Wash out all recyclables and remove them frequently.
  • Keep garbage in covered containers, especially if you put it outside.
  • Wipe down your kitchen stovetop, tables and counters every night.
  • Do not leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight.
