5 questions with Jim McHale

Jim McHale

Jim McHale

This month, we check in with Jim McHale, president of JP McHale, an Anticimex company based in Buchanan, N.Y. As an entomologist, McHale has been at the forefront of actively working with the public to banish the invasive spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula). Commonly known as SLF, this pest is native to China and was first detected in Pennsylvania in 2014. As of press time, it has spread to 16 states east of the Mississippi River — thought to be transported mainly by vehicles driving among states.

1. Jim, in a nutshell, what makes SLF a pest?

They are plant parasites that particularly like to feed on grapes, hops and trees, especially trees of heaven (Ailanthus altissima). While feeding, they expel honeydew, a sweet, sticky substance that attracts large numbers of ants and stinging insects. The substance covers all surfaces below it and encourages sooty mold growth. While these true bugs are technically a landscape pest, the pest control industry needs to be aware of just how prevalent and destructive SLF can be for their customers, too.

2. JP McHale’s parent company, Anticimex, has been on the forefront of SLF control since at least 2021, when Viking Pest Control, a sibling company of JP McHale, introduced free, branded scraper cards for customers to use to remove SLF eggs in the New York and Connecticut markets. Do the Anticimex companies still distribute those cards today?

We do. Our Anticimex team of platforms across the U.S. shares best practices and knowledge to continuously refine our offerings. The egg scraping tool started out as a community service and has since evolved into a new market and product line.

3. You launched the JP McHale Spotted Lanternfly Action Prevention (SLAP) Program and Task Force last month in response to the rapid increase in SLF throughout the Greater New York region. How is it being implemented?

The SLAP program is executed out of our Lawn Fertilizer/Plant Healthcare branch. That team is the best equipped and prepared to examine and apply necessary treatment strategies, which includes treating tree trunks and branches with neem oil and other tropical oils. This is combined with a soil treatment that is designed to combat SLF at the source.

Photo: arlutz73/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

4. What is your target market for this service?

Most of our work has been with concerned homeowners, but several businesses, municipalities and community groups also have connected for help.

5. What’s next for JP McHale’s SLAP Program and Task Force?

SLF is spreading rapidly. Awareness and rallying the community are key components to slowing the spread. We will continue to provide commentary, awareness and expertise wherever we can make an impact. I believe that every year, through best practice sharing, we become more efficient.

Preventing animals from entering attics

Chris White

Chris White

Wildlife control in attics is a vital aspect of maintaining a safe and healthy living environment. It is essential to prevent animals from entering homes, particularly the attic space, as it can lead to various issues, including:

  • Structural damage — Squirrels, raccoons, bats and other animals can chew through electrical wires, insulation and wooden beams, compromising the integrity of the structure. This damage can be costly to repair and may pose safety hazards.
  • Unsanitary conditions — Wildlife droppings and urine can contaminate attic insulation, leading to foul odors and potential health risks. Additionally, animals can introduce parasites and diseases into the living space, posing a threat to the occupants.

To control wildlife in attics, take preventive measures whenever possible. For example, regularly inspecting the exterior of the house for any potential entry points and sealing them off is crucial. Installing proper screening on vents and chimney caps also can prevent animals from entering. If an infestation is already present, it is recommended to safely and humanely remove the animals while restoring the attic to a safe and energy-efficient condition.

OPC Pest Services donates 20 Thanksgiving meals to families in need

Employees of Lousiville, Ky.-based OPC Pest Services, a Rollins brand, collected and donated food for Thanksgiving meals for 20 families in the Bowling Green, Ky., area.

Kelsey Gallihugh, office manager of the Bowling Green branch, was interviewed by WNKY on the day the company started collecting donations, which helped spread the word. Each of the families received a three-pound turkey breast, yams, cranberry sauce, carrots, green beans, peas, corn, mashed potatoes, cornbread mix, fried apples, stuffing, and mac and cheese.

The leftover food items were donated to Barren River Area Development District (BRADD), a program that specializes in providing help to elderly and underprivileged families in Warren County and surrounding areas. BRADD provided OPC with the list of the 20 families they knew were in need this year. In addition, the OPC Pest Services Lexington branch was able to help 10 additional families through a sister program similar to BRADD.

“Our branch was acquired by OPC in November of last year. I’ve always wanted to do something to give back to the community, so I thought this would be a great time to do it,” Gallihugh said in the news release. “I had a blast doing it! I’m so proud of our guys for getting into the spirit to deliver the meals. It was an awesome team effort, that’s for sure!”

Get wildlife-certified in structure repair for 2024

PHOTO: CHARLES HOLT

The 2023 NWCOA/NPMA Wildlife Expo took place in Myrtle Beach, S.C. PHOTO: CHARLES HOLT

The National Wildlife Control Operators Association (NWCOA) is a nonprofit trade association for wildlife and pest management professionals that provides training, best practices, political advocacy and more. NWCOA’s certified wildlife control training curriculum includes how to repair structures to stop wildlife entry. This concept is a major priority for NWCOA, to increase the overall professionalism in the wildlife control industry. As a bonus, this training also allows certified owners to increase their revenue considerably.

Understanding wildlife in structures isn’t the issue, but rather a symptom of the real issue: What is allowing wildlife to enter? For example, is the raccoon in the chimney the problem? No, it is a symptom of the real issue: a lack of a chimney cap, which would deter entry.

After the removal of offending wildlife, being able to end future wildlife entry offers clients peace of mind. Plus, quality repair service can offer a high return in increased revenue. Check out this and other upcoming training events — some of which are free for NWCOA members — online at NWCOA.com.

Also among next year’s events is Wildlife Expo 2024. Taking place in Houston, Texas, Feb. 6-8 and jointly hosted by NWCOA and the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), there will be presentations from industry professionals, an exhibition hall with the latest and greatest from industry suppliers, and training opportunities both before and after the event. We hope to see you there!

Predicting pest- or business-related trends in 2024

Photo: miakievy/DigitalVision Vectors/Getty Images

Photo: miakievy/DigitalVision Vectors/Getty Images

We asked Pest Management Professional’s columnists and editorial advisory board members share what they predict will be a pest-or business-related trend in 2024. Here are some of the experts’ responses from our November 2023 print edition.

Please take a minute to answer our latest one-question poll on this topic and let us what you’re bring to the new year: Reader poll: What do you predict will be a pest- or business-related trend in 2024?

PMP’s Editorial Advisory Board and Regular Contributors

Jerry Schappert, ACE: “More pest management professionals (PMPs) will be using smart devices, and there will be new products and equipment as a result.”

Doug Foster

Doug Foster

Doug Foster: “More PMPs will raise their prices. Faced with rising costs from every angle, PMPs really have no choice, but it’s actually going to have a positive impact on our industry.”

Paul Hardy: “We will continue to have a problem with hiring and keeping employees, resulting from government programs, corporate growth, profit-taking and subpar training.”

Kurt Scherzinger, ACE: “We will see another heavy stinging insect year like we did this year. The number of stinging insects we saw — and are still seeing in late 2023 — shows they will be ready again to make an even bigger impact in 2024.”

Sheri Spencer Bachman

Sheri Spencer Bachman

Sheri Spencer Bachman: “Because of the current hiring challenges, more businesses are going to change their pest control service frequency from quarterly to tri-annual. Not only will this allow PMPs to get more production done, requiring fewer team members, it also will increase the profitability of pest control businesses.”

Foster Brusca: “In 2024, I believe artificial intelligence (AI) will become more commonplace as more companies start to integrate the technology for their business needs. AI has some great capabilities for the pest control industry, from marketing to predicting pest trends. It’s not going away, so PMPs are going to need to figure out a way to use it correctly and effectively.”

Mark Sheperdigian, BCE: “Thanks to changes in rodent behavior and the specter of changing regulations, companies will prepare for removing rodent control from regular service in favor of rodent-specific programs.”

FMC: Scion Insecticide with UVX Technology

IMAGE: FMC

IMAGE: FMC

FMC’s Scion insecticide with trademarked UVX technology is the perimeter control product pest management professionals (PMPs) can count on. It is engineered with the active ingredient gamma-cyhalothrin to effectively control tough insect and arachnid pests with a formulation that maintains continuous residual for up to 90 days, even when faced with harsh surfaces, high temperatures and intense sunlight.

This product is particularly beneficial for managing biting pest populations in areas where people tend to spend a lot of time outside. Not only are mosquito and tick bites a nuisance, they can be a major health hazard, spreading illnesses like malaria and Lyme disease. Defending against these dangerous pests requires a product that can deliver both efficacy and efficiency in any environment, a product like Scion.

In addition to providing an industry-leading shield against mosquitoes and ticks, the company says, Scion is designed to save PMPs both money and time. The residual from a single treatment means longer protection and fewer applications, limiting callbacks and saving on the labor and time costs required for each job site.

FMC is so confident that Scion will deliver on all these promises that it offers 75-day assurance programs for both mosquito and tick control. Any FMC True Champions member who uses this product at the listed application rate to control these pests in an exterior perimeter is guaranteed no retreatments within that 75-day window. If a retreatment is required, FMC will supply the quantity of product needed for the service at no additional cost to the PMP.

4 tips to trap stubborn animals

Mark Ebner

Mark Ebner, account development manager at Woodstream

In many cases, a wild animal won’t go in the trap immediately after placement. Here are four tips to help entice a stubborn animal.

  • Get animals acquainted with the trap. Instead of setting the trap right away, give the animal time to get familiar with the trap so it doesn’t view the trap as a threat. After the bait has been disturbed, set the trap.
  • Camouflage the trap. By covering the top with leaves or twigs, you’ll make it look less obtrusive and more like a natural part of the environment. Some animals may even view a well-disguised trap as a potential shelter.
  • Choose the right bait. If the animal won’t go in the trap, you might want to reevaluate the attractiveness of the bait you’re using.
  • Place the trap strategically. Be sure you’re placing the trap in an area the animal frequents. Look for telltale signs like animal droppings or places where animal damage is present.

Pest Control Insulation: The Attic Power Box

IMAGE: PEST CONTROL INSULATION

IMAGE: PEST CONTROL INSULATION

From the makers of TAP Pest Control Insulation comes the Attic Power Box — the ultimate power solution for powering your insulation blowers while working in a residential attic. The box can be plugged in to a dryer or range outlet and adds 48 amps at 120 volts. Don’t worry about finding power or lugging around a bulky generator ever again! The Attic Power Box Package includes a 30-amp power distribution center; a three-wire old dryer adapter; a four-wire new dryer adapter; a three-wire old range adapter; a four-wire new range adapter; a 25-foot, heavy-gauge extension cord; a rolling pack bag; and a three-year warranty.

About Pest Control Insulation

Thermal Acoustical Pest Control (TAP) Insulation was created in 2001 by industry visionaries as the ideal fusion of two value propositions important to homeowners: pest control and energy-efficient insulation. Based on environmentally responsible cellulose insulation, this premium insulation product would save consumers money through superior energy efficiency and help protect their home against a myriad of common pests, including ants, cockroaches and termites.

While energy costs were skyrocketing for consumers, pest management companies were losing employees in the fall and winter due to the seasonality of the industry. Seemingly unrelated, the new TAP Pest Control Insulation represented a major opportunity for household energy efficiency at the consumer level and valued employee retention for pest management companies.

The result would be the “greenest of the green” — an insulation made up of almost 90 percent recycled paper, that would also eliminate pests from gaining access to homes through attics, crawlspaces and wall voids.

Inclusivity is key to successful work culture

PHOTO: ABC HOME & COMMERCIAL SERVICES – HOUSTON

Sharing a post-training meeting meal helps strengthen relationships among employees. PHOTO: ABC HOME & COMMERCIAL SERVICES – HOUSTON

Fostering a family atmosphere within a growing company requires a strategic approach that prioritizes core values, strong leadership, open communication and employee development.

By defining and communicating core values early on, companies establish a framework that guides employee behavior and maintains a sense of purpose as the organization expands. Equally critical is the role of leadership in exemplifying these values and nurturing a cohesive culture. Leaders who actively cultivate a family-like environment set a positive tone for the entire organization and reinforce the values they uphold.

Open communication serves as a linchpin in preserving a family atmosphere as the company grows. Regularly sharing updates on company goals, achievements and challenges ensures employees remain informed and included in the company’s journey. This inclusive approach empowers individuals to align themselves with the broader mission of the organization, fostering a sense of belonging that transcends growth.

Foster the feedback

Feedback, both giving and receiving, is central to maintaining a familial bond among employees. Encouraging a culture of feedback through methods like surveys and one-on-one discussions creates an environment where contributions are valued and collaboration is encouraged. Investing in personal development further solidifies the connection between employees and the company. When organizations prioritize employee growth, they demonstrate a commitment to everyone’s success, enhancing loyalty and engagement.

An inclusive work environment that celebrates diversity strengthens the sense of family within the organization. Recognizing and appreciating the unique backgrounds and perspectives of employees fosters genuine connections and shared experiences. Regular social interactions, both formal and informal, play a pivotal role in strengthening these connections. From team outings to volunteering activities, such events allow employees to interact beyond the confines of their roles, forging deeper relationships.

Give praise where it’s due

The power of recognition and appreciation cannot be underestimated in cultivating a family-like atmosphere. Acknowledging employee achievements, milestones and work anniversaries contributes to a positive emotional connection between employees and the company. Flexible work policies further cement the sense of caring within the company. When employees feel their work-life balance is respected, they reciprocate with increased dedication, loyalty and enthusiasm.

Leadership accessibility is paramount in maintaining a family atmosphere amid expansion. Keeping leadership approachable and available ensures that open dialogue.

Run Your Business: Keep it simple

Photo: Siarhei Khaletski/Stock / Getty Images Plus

Photo: Siarhei Khaletski/Stock / Getty Images Plus

Is it just me, or do you believe that when we’re faced with a difficult issue, we feel there must be a complicated solution to solve it?

But in most situations, that is the furthest from the truth. Sometimes the simplest steps can solve difficult issues.

A while back I was training for a race, and I kept getting painful blisters on my heel after every long run. I tried different running shoes, but the blisters kept returning. The blisters really hurt, and for days after I found myself limping to keep them from rubbing against my shoes.  As the race approached, I found myself dreading it. I knew if the blisters acted up during the run I was done. I knew if I began to limp and change my gait due to the blisters, it was going to be a painful, slow experience. I knew I needed to change something. I’m not one to rush to a doctor, but I was so desperate, I was even willing to make an appointment if it would help.

I decided to try one last step before I saw the doctor. Honestly, I am embarrassed it took me so long to figure it out. The answer was so simple. Rather than put bandages on my heel after the blisters showed up, I put the bandages on first to prevent the blisters in the first place.

I didn’t need new running shoes or see a fancy doctor. All I needed was a few adhesive bandages.

So many times, this occurs in our business as well. We get stuck thinking that solving our difficult issues requires complicated steps. And when we know the solution may be difficult, we tend to avoid the issue and procrastinate trying to solve it — which, of course, makes no sense. The longer we try to avoid it and ignore the issue, the more serious it can become.

Recently, one of our top restaurant accounts began to have a serious mouse issue. What was most frustrating, while this was a very large restaurant, was that there were no issues in the basement or kitchen areas as we would normally expect. All the issues were found in the dining areas. This is a very high-end restaurant, and the last thing they could tolerate were their customers seeing mice running around their dining room during service.

We quickly set up an aggressive program to attack the issue, but the problem persisted.

We knew we had to pull out all the stops. While we had a long relationship with the restaurant, the owners let us know that we were on the clock. If we couldn’t solve the problem, they would have to try another company.

We even brought in a consultant, who was as dumbfounded as we were. We were doing everything right, but still not winning.

Michael Broder

Michael Broder

That’s when my son Zack stepped in. He knew we had to do something different. He decided to sit in the restaurant all night so he could see firsthand where the issues were coming from. That first night showed him everything. It truly was a unique situation. Some of the mice had made a nest in a small gap behind the menu holder, and others were running up the curtains to a small void area in the ceiling.

It wasn’t complicated – it was really quite simple, but it quickly showed huge results. First, the restaurant managers were impressed that he sat there overnight. This showed dedication they would not get from many other companies. Second, it showed us issues we would never have seen otherwise and enabled us to zero in on the difficult areas to finally solve the issues.  Lastly, word of all he did quickly spread from our service managers to our technicians. This not only gave them greater respect for Zack, but for our company as a whole.

This simple act did so much. It helped solve the difficult issue, keep a satisfied customer and increased company morale and dedication across the board. All this by just sitting in a restaurant for a few hours!

What simple things can you do to solve your big problems?

Have a great run!

PestSure hosts Safety and Loss Prevention Conference

PHOTO: PESTSURE

PestSure’s Safety and Loss Prevention Conference had various speakers talk about how to prevent distracted in pest control businesses. PHOTO: PESTSURE

To raise awareness on distracted driving with pest control business owners and managers, PestSure hosted more than 100 of its insureds for its annual Safety and Loss Prevention Conference in Memphis, Tenn., on Sept. 27-28.

The conference was designed to help owners and managers identify strategies to mitigate the number of distracted driving incidents and reduce the financial impact that accompanies it.

Keynoting the event was Dr. Paul Atchley, of the University of South Florida, who discussed “The Science Behind Distracted Driving.”

Dr. Atchley told attendees multitasking while driving — trying to make a phone call, respond to a text, adjust the radio — all the while staying focused on the road is a myth. While many drivers feel they are capable of multitasking while behind the wheel, Dr. Atchley said research and crash statistic data proves otherwise, especially with younger drivers.

“You need your brain to drive safely, and multitasking is an impossible task for the brain and attempting to do it while driving is a recipe for disaster,” Dr. Atchley said.

Supporting Dr. Atchley’s position is research showing that drivers between the ages of 25 and 34 are involved in the most fatal crashes. There are nearly 1,000 more deaths per year among 25- to 34-year-olds than drivers under 25.

Dr. Atchley said to change driver behavior, owners and managers must change attitudes, and that will take work. His recommendations included structuring distracted driving education along the following:

  • Leadership: It starts at the top and filters down — “I can do it/you can do it.”
  • Education: The why of the change, why we want to eliminate distracted driving.
  • Rules: We have rules against driving drunk/alcohol in the work vehicle so why not the same for distracted driving.
  • Monitor for Compliance: Let everyone know phone records will be checked randomly and checked post-accident.
  • Enforcement: Provide training up to and including termination.

“Achieving positive change in safety begins with awareness, and the PestSure Safety and Loss Prevention Conference is not just a gathering—it’s a commitment to safeguarding the shared future of not only our insureds but the industry as a whole,” said Todd Burke, COO of PestSure.  “By actively pursuing the latest information on safety best practices, especially when it comes to distracted driving, our insureds are fortifying their organizations against the challenges they and their employees face when it comes to creating a safer workplace.”

Featured sessions at the two-day event covered a wide array of safety and loss prevention topics impacting pest control professionals. The agenda included:

  • Better Employee Retention: Debbie Taranto, Lloyd Pest Control
  • Managing Your GPS Data: John Judge, Certus Pest
  • Employee: Asset or Liability – Abby Thalachelloor, Tate Eperjesi, and Kim Barrett, PestSure/Sedgwick
  • OSHA Heat Illness: Jay Yarsinske, Terminix
  • Engaging Leadership in the Safety Battle: Richard Spencer, Arrow Exterminators
  • Reasonable Suspicion: Understanding Impairment: Michael Barnes, Unique Background Solutions
  • Situational Awareness: Mark Sheperdigian, Rose Pest Solutions
  • PestSure Nurse Consultation: Carrie Layton, Sedgwick

3 protocols for successful wildlife control

Gregg Schumaker

Gregg Schumaker

While it may not be difficult to catch the occasional wildlife pest, to do so consistently and still be profitable takes skill and discipline. Here are three proven protocols for success:

1. Know the basic biology and behavior of the animals you are trying to control. Diagnosing a wildlife problem begins with the initial phone call and your inspection starts. Question your client for clues that will help you identify the offenders and determine the equipment you will need.

2. When you arrive on-site, take note of overhanging trees and where wildlife may be traveling. Conduct your inspection thoroughly. and always follow the same process — beginning with the attic, ending with the exterior — to ensure nothing is missed.

3. Manage your client expectations as to what is realistic. Put your findings and plan of action into a written document, and discuss with your clients before work begins. Regularly communicating and updating clients as the job progresses helps avoid conflicts and secure a favorable outcome.

PestWest USA: Chameleon 1×2

IMAGE: PESTWEST USA

IMAGE: PESTWEST USA

With the new Chameleon 1×2 fly trap, insects are caught cleanly and securely onto the glue board, the company says — no noise, no smell, no problem. This allows the equipment to be placed closer to sensitive areas, such as steam-cleaned, hosed-down, high-moisture and corrosive environments. The units use interchangeable tubes and sticky boards to minimize stocking requirements.

Attractive, slim, wall-mounted, compact and unobtrusive, this unit is also ideal for use in food preparation areas. A free-standing bracket is an available option. Each unit weighs 11 pounds and measures 12.5 x 3.25 x 19 inches.

The Chameleon 1×2 is equipped with two 15-watt Quantum Shatterproof UV-A lamps for optimal attraction. The Reflector Box, which is fitted as standard behind the UV-A lamp, ensures that the lamps can be positioned closely to the glue board; it also protects the glue board from drying out.

Replacing the glue board and lamps is easy to do without tools, the company says. It is recommended to use the white unit mainly in offices and indoors; the stainless steel with chrome grid or the fully stainless steel units are better suited for outdoors or in stables.

About PestWest USA

Founded in 2001 and based in Sarasota, Fla., PestWest USA is an insect light trap (ILT) manufacturer that is part of the Killgerm group of companies based in Ossett, England. PestWest also offers a full range of Bio-gel+ biological cleaning products and expert training programs for pest management professionals.
PestWest utilizes Dr. Stuart Mitchell, a frequent Pest Management Professional contributor, in close collaboration with the technical teams in the UK, for their in-depth knowledge of the biology and habits of flying insects and electrical engineering expertise to create reliable products for flying insect management.
