Genetically modified mosquito project finally launches in Florida

PHOTO: DR. GERRY WEGNER, BCE

PHOTO: DR. GERRY WEGNER, BCE

Pest Management Professional (PMP) has been following the evolution of British company Oxitec and its pursuit of using gentically modified (GM) male yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) to lower disease, ever since it was announced at the 2015 American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) meeting in New Orleans, La., as a technology to watch. In addition to the illness in their common name, yellow fever mosquitoes can spread dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika fever and more.

This week — “after a decade of planning, public engagement and regulatory approvals,” according to a news release — the  Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) has formally launched the project. “Over the next few months, six locations in the Florida Keys will host Oxitec’s male Aedes aegypti release boxes that will slowly release their self-limiting, male mosquitoes,” the Oxitec news release explains. “Like all male mosquitoes, Oxitec’s mosquitoes do not bite. Oxitec’s males are intended to reduce the number of potentially disease-transmitting female Aedes aegypti.”

As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains:

“GM male mosquito eggs that carry the self-limiting gene are released into an area. Once they have hatched and develop through to the adult stage, they are available to mate with wild females. The genes are passed on to offspring. The female offspring die before they become adults. As a result, the number of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes in the area decreases.”

Oxitec received an Experimental Use Permit (EUP) from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for Florida in May 2020.

The idea of releasing GM mosquitoes has been met with mixed public opinion, as PMP first reported in October. Reactions to this week’s formal launch has been similarly mixed, per coverage from news outlets such as USA Today, The Telegraph and the Miami Herald.

Lexington, Ky.-based MosquitoMate has a similar program, allowing the public to order male yellow fever mosquitoes carrying the Wolbachia bacterium. While the proprietary “ZAP” populations work in a similar manner, the method is not considered genetic modification.

The CDC explains how Wolbachia-carrying mosquitoes work as a control method here, and how the GM mosquitoes, like what Oxitec has developed, here. Yet another method, irradiated mosquitoes, is explained here.

Prevention is key for stinging insects

Dr. Reid Ipser, Director of Technical Services, Nisus Corp.

Dr. Reid Ipser, Director of Technical Services, Nisus Corp.

Stinging insects are a nightmare for the average homeowner. After all, nobody likes to get stung.

In many cases, technicians can simply treat nests with an appropriately labeled wasp and hornet spray. Consider, too, that using a foam solution on nests prevents individuals from flying. Most species will sting when really disturbed, and foaming prevents this, immobilizing the individual stinging insect.

Think of bringing comfort to the customer: Regularly inspect under eaves and other likely nesting areas, and catch nests in their early-construction stage. Most liquid insecticides leave a good residual that will prevent continued nest-building. Prevention, as compared to remediation, usually is more effective.

The birds and the bees, and then some

GRAPHIC: ISTOCK.COM/ERAVAU

GRAPHIC: ISTOCK.COM/ERAVAU

As the busy season for pest management professionals (PMPs) gets under way, so, too, does the busy season for strange pest stories in the news. For example:

  • The dove is a sign of peace: Police officers in Carrollton, Texas, had to take a cruiser out of commission for two weeks when a dove decided to nest and lay eggs on its windshield. The report is per KRLD NewsRadio 1080, an AM station serving Dallas-Forth Worth, Texas. Whether the nesting was done out of protest or opportunity was not determined.
  • Borrowed Buick’s backseat bees: According to NBC’s “The Today Show,” the Las Cruces, N.M., police got a call from a man who returned to his car in a parking lot after grocery shopping, only to encounter an estimated 15,000 honey bees in the back. The car had its back windows down. Luckily, an off-duty firefighter, Jesse Johnson, is also a beekeeper. He was able to safely relocate the bees to his property. A store security guard was stung, but that was the only reported injury.
  • I’m tired of these monkey-fighting snakes on this monkey-fighting shelf (with apologies to Samuel L. Jackson): This headline from WAPT, the ABC-TV affiliate of Jackson, Miss., encapsulates it all: “‘He’s slithering, oh my gosh’: Woman spots snake on shelf at a Target.” The black rat snake was cozied up to some cans of baked beans in Apex, N.C.
  • Protecting the synchronous fireflies: While the previous stories focused on critters that were in places they weren’t supposed to be, this story, from Atlas Obscura, is about protecting Lampyridae beetles in their natural habitat.

Study: Flies can carry coronavirus, but there’s little cause for concern

Photo: Dr. Gerald Wegner, BCE-Emeritus

PHOTO: DR. GERALD WEGNER, BCE-EMERITUS

Two new studies that were recently published in the journal Parasites & Vectors have found that house flies (Musca domestica) can carry SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, for up to 24 hours after exposure.

But before you sound the alarm bells to customers — or technicians, for that matter — the chances of a human contracting the virus from a fly are slim to none, according to the researchers.

The first study’s methodology, as described in Parasites & Vectors, consisted of  testing the infectivity of house flies after exposure to SARS-CoV-2-spiked medium or milk. In the second study, environmental samples were tested for infectivity after contact with the flies exposed to SARS-CoV-2. “During both studies, samples were collected at various time points post-exposure and evaluated by SARS-CoV-2-specific RT-qPCR and virus isolation,” the abstract states, noting:

Under laboratory conditions, house flies acquired and harbored infectious SARS-CoV-2 for up to 24 h post-exposure. In addition, house flies were able to mechanically transmit SARS-CoV-2 genomic RNA to the surrounding environment up to 24 h post-exposure. Further studies are warranted to determine if house fly transmission occurs naturally and the potential public health implications of such events.

The website Verywell Health followed up with two co-authors of both studies, Drs. Jurgen Richt, a professor at Kansas State University and director of the Center on Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, and Dana Nayduch, research leader at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Arthropod-Borne Animal Diseases Research Unit.

Both cautioned that the lab environment is far from real-world conditions. The second study showed that while flies could transmit the virus’ genome, which itself is not infectious, they did not transmit the virus itself.

Two infectious disease experts that Verywell followed up with agreed. Quipped Dr. Amesh Adalja,s enior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, “How often is there milk that has COVID in it sitting out, that a fly bathes itself in, in real life? I wouldn’t worry about this at all.”

Dr. John Sellick, professor of medicine at the University at Buffalo/SUNY, pointed out in the Verywell article that “we went through this with HIV and Ebola. Just because you can show in a laboratory setting that you can get a mosquito or fly to have a virus after feeding on something doesn’t mean the virus spreads that way.”

So, why is this news after all? Dr. Richt told Verywell that “flies could be a source if there is no other explanation for how someone became infected” with COVID-19. In addition, Dr. Nayduch foresees a time where the medical community “could potentially screen flies for traces of the virus and use them as sentinels to detect virus in the environment.”

Learn to identify stinging insect nests quickly

Noel McCarthy, VP Advertising, Noble Pine Products Co.

Noel McCarthy, Staff Writer, Sterifab

The trick to dealing with stinging insects is being able to quickly identify their nests. For example:

  • Paper wasps (Polistes spp.) are troublesome fliers that tend to hang their nests from trees and porches or underneath decks. The nests are often umbrella-shaped, but they can be spherical or just plain oddly shaped.
  • Bald-faced hornets also build their nests in trees, on shrubs, under overhangs and in sheds. The nests can measure as much as 2 feet long and more than 12 inches in diameter. Take great care dealing with these visitors, because their stings are very painful.
  • Mud dauber nests are easy to spot, as they commonly occur underneath porches, building overhangs, eaves, and other sheltered places. Laid side-by-side, these nests are essentially tubes made of wood, which vary in length depending on the species.
  • Cicada killer wasps (Sphecius speciosus) are solitary insects that tend to burrow into soft, well-drained soil. You’ll find them in flower beds, under bushes, along pathways, or dug in under porches.

Regardless of the species, always wear the appropriate PPE when you deal with these creatures.

Feedback analysis can help business success

IMAGE: DJ_AOF/ISTOCK / GETTY IMAGES PLUS/GETTY IMAGES

IMAGE: DJ_AOF/ISTOCK / GETTY IMAGES PLUS/GETTY IMAGES

For pest management firms, there is a sweet spot between the concepts of “you’ll never please everyone all of the time” and “don’t get caught up in the hype.” Just as it’s good to look at negative feedback from customers — taken in context, and what you and your team can learn from it — it’s also good to celebrate the positive feedback, to acknowledge a team member who has made a customer happy, for example. It reaffirms that your company is going in the right direction.

The same is true in the publishing industry, and it’s in that spirit that we have commissioned Accelera Publishing Research to conduct a survey for our “customers,” our readers. We want to know where you turn for information, what we’re doing right, and what we could be doing better. There’s even a chance to win one of five $100 VISA gift cards if you put your name in the drawing. Just click here to take the short survey.

Feedback from your employees is another benchmark you should take very seriously for your business. To that end, Pest Management Professional (PMP) is co-hosting a content marketing webinar with Orem, Utah-based industry communication software supplier Slingshot. Titled “What Your Managers Wish You Knew,” the free, one-hour online event takes place on Thursday, May 13, at 1 p.m. EDT.

Panelists include Farrah Fulps, director of business development, Arrow Exterminators Inc., Broken Arrow, Okla; Evan Unick, VP, customer solutions for Sandy, Utah-based Aptive Environmental; and longtime PMP “Start-Up Diaries” columnist Pete Schopen, founder and president of Schopen Pest Solutions, McHenry, Ill. They will be moderated by Slingshot CMO Chris Brasher.

During this webinar, the panelists will answer these questions:

  • Marketing: What are the most important metrics to show marketing’s contribution to growth and customer response?
  • Finance: What benchmarks from your finance team should you be following?
  • Call Center Operations: How do you get your teams to work together to streamline operations and maximize success?

Learn more and register here. If you cannot attend in person, registering also gets you a link to the archived version to play on-demand after the event.

IMAGE: THE PEST POSSE

Every Monday in May, The Pest Posse will host a “U.S. Armed Forces in Pest Control” YouTube series, sponsored by Catchmaster. The Pest Posse, based in Santa Clara, Calif., is a self-described weekly YouTube series, continuing training solution, and consultant dedicated to pest management professionals (PMPs) and small- to medium-size business owners. Co-owner Foster Brusca is a member of Pest Management Professional’s (PMP’s) editorial advisory board.

The series kicks off with a live episode on Monday, May 3, with special guest Dr. Stan Cope, Catchmaster’s VP, Technical Products and Services, and a past president of the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA). During the National Pest Management Association’s (NPMA’s) Legislative Day event last month, Dr. Cope was announced as the PestVets Veteran of the Year. He will be formally recognized at PestWorld in November.

The Pest Posse chose May for this series because it is Military Appreciation Month. “We wanted to recognize the pest management professionals who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and acknowledge their military service, the sacrifice they have made to protect our nation, and their dedication to the professional pest management industry,” Brusca said in a news release.

ABOUT THE PEST POSSE

The Pest Posse was founded by Culley Christensen in 2017 and helped along in 2018 by industry veteran Foster Brusca. Its mission is to be a trusted resource for training and information that pest management professionals, especially small- to medium-size business owners, need to grow their skills and knowledge in the industry. The Pest Posse currently provides a weekly YouTube series on Mondays, with special episodes on periodic Thursdays. In addition, The Pest Posse Academy is a continuous training solution and The Pest Posse Stampede is a twice-a-month podcast.

LOGO: PESTMASTER SERVICES

Reno, Nev.-based Pestmaster was recently acquired by Riverside Co., a global private investment firm based in New York City. On April 20, Riverside announced that it had launched Threshold Brands, a trade services franchise platform consisting of Pestmaster, MaidPro, FlyFoe, Men in Kilts and USA Insulation. All five businesses had been acquired by Riverside within the last eight months.

Founded in 1979 in Bishop, Calif., Pestmaster has more than 35 franchised locations in 18 states, Washington D.C, and internationally in Lebanon. Its three service categories provide general pest control services to homes and businesses; vegetation management through ground vegetation control and weed control; and  health-related/vector control of mosquitoes, ticks, birds, rodents and fleas, as well as ancillary services such as disaster relief, educational consulting and expert testimony.

MaidPro, based in Boston, Mass., and founded in 1991, is a national provider of residential and light commercial cleaning services through a network of more than 270 franchised locations. MaidPro owns FlyFoe, a Boston-based mosquito and tick control franchise, founded in 2017, and Men in Kilts, a window cleaning, power washing and gutter cleaning franchise founded in Vancouver, Canada in 2002.

USA Insulation, meanwhile provides retrofit insulation services for residential and commercial customers across 50 franchised locations. It was founded in 1985 in Eastlake, Ohio, with headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio.

“We are excited to join these organizations together, building a robust trade services platform that will help more customers across the country,” Riverside Managing Partner Loren Schlachet said in a news release. “During our partnership, we will look to bring additional businesses under the Threshold Brands umbrella, assisting with improvements in technology and innovation, growth-driven sales strategies and development opportunities for franchisees.”

CSI donates $10K to Project EverGreen

LOGO: CSI

Pasadena, Texas-based Control Solutions Inc. (CSI) has committed $10,000 to Project EverGreen, a non-profit organization based in Cleveland, Ohio. According to a news release, the donation will “help expand and diversify a nationwide initiative that has restored more than 1 million square feet of healthy turf and green spaces in urban areas across the United States.”

“CSI is proud to support Project EverGreen and the vital role that their organization plays in communities around the country,” CSI Marketing Director Ty Ferraro said in the news release. “We look forward to developing this partnership and helping to enhance green spaces in urban centers nationwide.”

According to Project EverGreen, research has found that green spaces not only improve air quality, but also reduce heat buildup and lower cooling costs in communities. In addition to fostering closer-knit communities, access to green spaces “has also shown to lower blood pressure, reduce stress, improve attention levels and reduce feelings of fear and anger in both adults and children.”

In 2021, Project EverGreen and its partners have major renovation projects scheduled in Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Mich.; and New York City. There are also several collaborative projects in the planning stages.

“Parks play a vital role in the health and well-being of youth and adults alike; a fact never more evident than during the quarantining and social distancing we experienced the last 12 months. Connecting people to their parks enhances social well-being, relationships, safety and environmental health,” Project EverGreen Executive Director Cindy Code said in the news release. “With CSI’s generous donation, we can expand our GreenCare for Communities initiative to more urban centers.”

Solitary vs. social stinging insects

Dr. Rakim Turnipseed, Product Development Manager, Insecticides, FMC Global Specialty Solutions

Dr. Rakim Turnipseed, Product Development Manager, Insecticides, FMC Global Specialty Solutions

Notorious for their modified, harmful abdomens, stinging pests such as bees, wasps, hornets, scorpions and fire ants can be quite a pain, literally. Anyone who has had the unfortunate experience of being stung by these types of disquieting pests usually wish for a way to not only control, but prevent them.

Knowing the types of stinging pests you’re dealing with can be beneficial in managing their populations. For example:

  • Solitary stinging pests. Humans typically encounter these pests individually rather than in groups. These include mud daubers, cicada killers and scorpions. They tend to not be aggressive, except when provoked. Insecticides are not usually needed to control solitary stinging pests; rather, elimination of breeding sites is recommended.
  • Social stinging pests. Humans typically find these pests in larger groups, or colonies, whose populations support a queen. They will sting, especially in large numbers, if disturbed. Social stinging pests often are found inside homes during the fall to protect themselves from cooling temperatures. Special care must be exercised when controlling bees. which also are beneficial.

Insecticides can be used when social stinging pests are near humans and their homes. Spraying directly into nest openings or treating fire ant mounds with a suitable insecticide, for example, is also recommended.

Suggestions to eliminate stinging insect problems

Joe Barlie

Joe Barlie, BCE, Technical Service Lead, Bayer

Stinging pests cause great anxiety; for people with sensitivities and allergies, a sting may even be life-threatening. There are thousands of species of Hymenoptera, classified as bees and wasps, found throughout the United States. Most of these insects are solitary and perform beneficial behaviors to the ecology, including predation of pest arthropods, pollination and general scavenging of decaying matter.

When stinging insects, especially social species, create colony sites in and around structures, service to eliminate them is required. Direct treatment into the nest/colony site usually is the fastest and most effective method to eliminate the problem. Some tips include:

  • Wasps and bees are public health pests; be sure the product you choose is fully labeled for the pest and site you will be treating.
  • Equip yourself with a complete bee suit, including gloves and helmet, and wear it. And obviously, technicians who have insect venom allergies should not be assigned these services.
  • Choose active ingredients with fast knockdown and formulations that deliver the product deep into the nest. Think dusts, foams and pressurized liquids and aerosols, for example.
  • Treat at night, if possible, to impact all members of the colony.
  • Never block or plug the nest entrance; agitated insects may escape inside. Remove all nesting materials if possible after service.

PCO M&A Specialists, William Blair note yearly 17.3% increase for March

Dan Gordon, CPA

According to PCO M&A Specialists, the Newton, N.J.-based advising firm led by Pest Management Professional’s financial columnist, Dan Gordon, CPA, the total U.S. pest control index increased 17.3 percent year-over-year in March 2021. The firm partners with global banking and asset management company William Blair to determine the monthly sales for 140 different U.S. pest control companies across 30 states.

The March increase marks an acceleration from January and February, which were up 5.1 percent and 6.3 percent respectively year-over-year. The index increased 21.3 percent on a sequential basis, which is higher than normal seasonal trends (up 10 percent in March 2020 and 16 percent in March 2019). This index includes recurring and nonrecurring revenue for the residential pest, commercial pest and termite segments of the industry. It does not include residential door-to-door companies.

Some of this increase can be attributed to an easier comparison with last year, as the last two weeks of March 2020 were disrupted by the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, even after taking the easier comparison into account, the result for March 2021 is very strong and indicative of a healthy pest control market in the U.S., according to the index.

All three pest control markets — residential, commercial, termite — experienced a significant sequential uptick in March. The residential index accelerated to 23 percent growth in March, up from 12 percent growth in February. The commercial pest index accelerated to 17 percent growth in March, up from 6 percent growth in February. The termite index accelerated to 10 percent growth in March, up from flat revenue in February. Furthermore, the strong sequential increase in bed bug revenue may indicate that sales in this market hit a low point in 2020.

A detection dog handler’s point of view

Herbie Yan has worked as a canine handler with M&M Pest Control (MMPC) in Queens, N.Y., for nearly a decade. After a 15-year career with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), Yan got into dog handling with MMPC, he says, for the “love of getting to work with a canine as a profession.”

After working for MMPC part-time as a way to earn extra money for his growing family, he soon quit his USPS position and transitioned to full-time with MMPC because he realized how much he loved his job. “I see growth and a future with the pest control industry,” he says. “From getting to work with a dog, to traveling to different parts of the tri-state area and meeting clients … it’s really the best job. I knew that, with the special bond you share with a working dog, I would be in it for the long haul.”

Yan is pictured on the cover of the April 2021 issue with his first and current canine partner, Dexter. “When I was hired, Dexter was in need of a partner,” Yan recalls. “When I saw his energy, his affection, and his playfulness, I knew we would be a great match.”

Yan and Dexter were certified by the National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association on the first try, and have been a solid team since. But while Dexter is like a family member for Yan, his wife and three children during non-working hours, Yan is keenly aware Dexter is a co-worker.

“I know Dexter is not, and should not be treated as, a regular pet,” he affirms. “Dexter is first and foremost my partner, and we are trained professionals in scent detection. Given the nature of our work, I always make sure Dexter is fit and healthy so we can be at the top of our game.

“Based on my experience, you have to know for sure that this career is suitable for a new handler,” Yan adds. “Trust is very important. As a handler, you will develop a special bond with a canine that is hard to let go. This is a career that is long-term.”

Yan says he feels lucky to have bonded with other MMPC handlers, as well. “We meet and train together regularly. We get together sometimes just talk about our previous jobs or have a few laughs. Management recognizes our hard work, and sponsors group dinners regularly,” he says.

Dexter is 9 years old. Yan expects to provide a good retirement for him by continuing to have him live with his family, and enjoy their big backyard. MMPC will continue to play a role, however, by financially supporting Dexter with what amounts to a retirement pension. “He will be happy for the rest of his life,” Yan promises.

Detector dogs: When the potential outweighs the pitfalls

ILLUSTRATION: LEO MICHAEL

ILLUSTRATION: LEO MICHAEL

When you read our cover story this month, about what M&M Pest Control (MMPC) Founder and President Timothy Wong has gone through this year, you might wonder why he didn’t just walk away from having a canine bed bug scent detection division at all. Could the time, money, effort — and the potential for having what should have been a private personnel matter blow up in media outlets worldwide — be worth it?

In a word, yes. Wong explains his company’s side of an ongoing court case over custody of a working canine, and notes the lessons learned by his team as a result. Wong reports that despite the court case, MMPC’s canine division still brings many benefits to his business, including:

  • Accuracy. “We’re able to offer essential bed bug inspection services that are more accurate and efficient than traditional visual inspections,” he says. “Bed bug dogs can cover large areas in a relatively short amount of time, which allows us to work with larger corporate clients.”
  • Ambassadorship. In addition to boosting an eco- and customer-friendly image, its four-legged employees remove some of the fear and stigma for customers worried about having bed bugs. “Our pups also help generate a lot of positive online reviews for our business, since they’re so friendly and great at their jobs,” he says.
  • ROI. Wong says canine pest scent detection services can yield a profit margin of 25 percent or more, as well as grow treatment revenues.

Getting outside is good for business

Nearly half of the pest management professionals (PMPs) who answered our 2021 Mosquito Management Survey said residential customers account for half of their mosquito control business (check out our 2021 Mosquito Management Supplement here).

The coronavirus pandemic appears to have had a minimal impact on mosquito management revenue for many, because it is performed outdoors. Several survey respondents experienced an uptick in business because homeowners were spending more time in their yards, and even investing in swimming pools and patios.

A few of the PMPs who took our survey reported heavy rains had a bigger impact than COVID-19, and some said fewer customers required one-time mosquito control work as large outdoor gatherings were canceled or put on hold for the foreseeable future. But overall, customers who were spending more time at home than ever before relied on PMPs to banish biting mosquitoes so they could get out of the house.

We also asked PMP’s experts to weigh in on the most challenging aspect of mosquito control. As you will see, it is not the coronavirus pandemic. Read the expert responses now.

The care and feeding of a canine division

PHOTO: ROB TANNENBAUM PHOTOGRAPHY

MMPC working canine Dexter inspects a couch for bed bugs. PHOTO: ROB TANNENBAUM PHOTOGRAPHY

The return on investment for a working canine varies by market, as well as whether your dogs are detecting the scents of termites, bed bugs or rodents. Timothy Wong, president of M&M Environmental Services (doing business as M&M Pest Control, or MMPC) in Queens, N.Y., notes the New York City bed bug scent detection market has become “somewhat saturated” in the past decade. Whereas 10 years ago, the expected annual profit margin was about 55 percent, he says, today it’s closer to 25 percent. The percentage can vary, too, of course, by how much marketing value the division brings.

Robert Gallo

Robert Gallo

Robert Gallo, who has owned Round the Clock Pest Control, Santa Clarita, Calif., for 18 years, says that while marketing is important, the focus should be kept on the technical, and how accurate the working canines can be. Gallo also is on the board of directors for the National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association (NESDCA). He got involved because it is a “third-party certifying organization that helps ensure that the highest of standards for working canines are upheld, and as a pest management professional (PMP), I wanted to help guide and educate people on the importance of third-party certification for the integrity of the industry.”

Gallo became a canine handler 12 years ago, and currently his firm has three handlers and working canines. “Over the years, I have seen a lot of pest control and canine scent detection companies go out of business, and I have rescued some dogs from companies that have gone under, to keep them active and working,” he says. “We have also had much success subcontracting with other PMPs.”

Gallo says PMPs need to keep in mind that starting a canine division isn’t going to bring instant success. “It takes time and patience to get it up and running,” he continues. “Purchasing a dog and going through the training is just the start of the new endeavor. It takes time for the dog to acclimate itself and get comfortable with its handlers, its new environment, and all the overwhelming love and attention they will receive from colleagues and clients once taken out into the field.”

Scott Mullaney

Scott Mullaney

Scott Mullaney agrees. “It took us two years to start up our canine rat scent-detection and abatement service, and about a year for the mouse detection service,” says Mullaney, co-owner of Unique Pest Management, Woodbridge, Va. “We conducted business viability studies to get a bearing on what type of service would be provided on what type of properties. You also need to expect to carry the costs of the program for at least four to six months while it gets up and going.”

Because many working dogs have been rescued from animal shelters, Gallo says, they have a “second chance at life” and excel because they are given a purpose. That said, it’s important to emphasize the reward for a positive scent with food or a toy. “If someone is out sick or quits, or we have to change handlers for any other reason, any of our other certified handlers can pick up the leash and work with that particular dog,” he explains. In addition, a handler can treat his or her partner as a pet — but only to a point.

During training, certified handlers learn of the limitations. Gallo offers hiking trips as an example of something not allowed with a working canine. “Such an activity would take the dog off its regular routines and environment,” he says. “If the dog were to get hurt or bite someone, for example, it would be a huge liability to both the company and the handler. Hiking could also result in the dog getting injured or worse.”

Wong advises PMPs to not underestimate the initial investment. “Although the direct cost of basic bed bug scent detection training at an academy is around $15,000, if you factor in all of the other expenses involved, such as adopting and raising the canine, hiring and training handlers for the canine, getting both the canine and the handlers certified, as well as all of the other necessary expenses relating to training, such as travel, food, lodging, insurance, equipment and so on, that initial investment is actually closer to $30,000,” he says.

In addition, consider ongoing expenses such as handler salaries, medical insurance, vehicle and transportation costs, canine food and supplies, routine training, ongoing certifications and general overhead.

Deanna Kjorlien

Deanna Kjorlien, ACE

Another consideration is whether you will have enough appointments to keep the dog(s) working. Deanna Kjorlien, ACE, co-owner of Green Dog Pest Service in Gig Harbor, Wash., points out that “canine teams maintain their training better when they are in the field working consistently. Make sure you can consistently book a minimum of 20 hours a week of inspections for the dog.” If not, she says, perhaps a canine detection subcontractor is a better bet. Many third-party contractors also are willing to help consult on a division start-up or refresh, too.

“They can help find and evaluate trained detection dogs, structure pricing, train handlers and advise on sales tactics and marketing,” she adds. “I absolutely love helping people with this line of business, it feeds my serial entrepreneurial spirit and my passion for detection dogs and pest control.”

Andy McGinty, CEO of LIPCA Insurance, Baton Rouge, La., notes that if you go the subcontracting route, you still need to check with your insurer first. “Make sure your company is listed as an additional insured under the canine’s insurance policy. That is usually free to request. If you can get listed as a Primary Additional Insured, that is even better. Ask your agent. Sometimes there is a small charge to be listed as the Primary Additional Insured on a certificate, but canine service overall has been a very effective and profitable tool for the pest control industry.”
