Survey: Americans react to pests

TruGreenTruGreen and OnePoll recently conducted a survey to understand how American homeowners’ feelings towards unwanted pests and bugs.

The survey highlighted several primary conclusions, including:

  • Spiders aren’t so scary to homeowners. Whether found inside or outside the home, beetles, centipedes and cockroaches take the top spot as creepiest crawlers to be removed or squished. Surprisingly, spiders are less often subject to the same fate, whether found indoors (16 percent) or outdoors (11 percent).
  • Homeowners’ reactions to pests can evoke a strong, vivid emotional response. A majority of homeowners, specifically 56 percent, express outright frustration, while there’s a close tie among those feeling fear, disgust, and anxiety – each registering at 39 percent.
  • The likelihood of taking action against pests hinges largely on two factors: their appearance and where they are found. More than half of the Americans surveyed (56 percent) make the choice to “squish” based on the pest’s appearance, while an equal percentage consider the potential harm these creatures could inflict on their children, pets and homes.
  • Preparing food = worst scenario for encountering pests. A majority of surveyed Americans agree that discovering an uninvited pest while cooking is the worst-case scenario. A close second is the unsettling scenario of stumbling upon an unexpected pest while on the verge of sleeping (23 percent). On the other hand, some believe that the living room (16 percent) or the shower (12 percent) are the most undesireable spots for such encounters.
  • Social media squashes traditional advice. Americans depend heavily on social media channels like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube for information on pest control with a staggering 97 percent compared to books, home improvement stores, or their family and friends.
  • Professionals are a go-to resource. More than half of the respondents (68 percent) said they would hire a professional for pest issue and concerns, and 20 percent would rather “phone a friend” to squish the pest than do it themselves.

“With the arrival of the spooky season, Americans agree that there’s nothing more unsettling than encountering a pest in your home,” Jeremy McReynolds, TruGreen’s pest control expert, said in the news release. “Between Halloween-themed creepy crawler décor adorning every neighborhood and bracing for the chill of the season that drives pests indoors, it’s no surprise that nearly half (48 percent) of Americans experience the most pests at home during the autumn and winter seasons. To protect your home and the well-being of your family, it’s best to enlist the expertise of a professional to proactively keep unwelcome intruders from gaining entry.”

The random double-opt-in survey of 2,000 American homeowners or renters with a yard or lawn was commissioned by TruGreen between Aug. 11-14, 2023. It was conducted by market research company OnePoll, whose team members are members of the Market Research Society and have corporate membership to the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research (ESOMAR).

About J.T. Eaton

Founded in East Cleveland, Ohio, in 1932 by Jasper T. Eaton as a mail-order house for pest control products for professional use, J.T. Eaton was brought to prominence when Pest Management Professional (PMP) Hall of Famer Stanley Baker (Class of 1999) purchased it in 1949 for $2,500. In the first year, Baker did $35,000 worth of business. And before his death in 2005 at the age of 87, he built it up to a multi-million-dollar company. Baker was a lifelong innovator, and is credited for creating the paraffin rodent bait block in 1962. He is also credited with developing the modern glue board design, in 1980. In 1999, he helped patent an ant and cockroach product that uses just 1 percent boric acid.

Still family-owned and -operated by the Baker family in Twinsburg, Ohio, J.T. Eaton’s product line includes products for rodents, wildlife, bed bugs, mosquitoes and other flying insects and more.

Skyhawk appointment pest control, wildlife control ambassador

James Nase

James Nase

Skyhawk recently appointed James Nase as its ambassador to the pest control and wildlife control industries.

Nase, with 45 years of experience in pest control and wildlife control, was an early advocate for the use of electronic remote monitoring in pest control and wildlife control. In his 25 years as technical service director at Moyer Pest Control, Nase deployed many of the available ERM systems before settling on Skyhawk and the Skyhawk Trapmate ERM product line as his preferred solution.

“We’re delighted to continue working with Jim in a more formal capacity,” said Rich Shevelow, CEO of Skyhawk. “He’s a recognized expert in remote monitoring for animal control who is well known throughout the pest and wildlife control communities.”

In addition to his work at Moyer, Nase also served on the Urban Pest Control Technical Committee and the Copesan Technical Committee and is the owner of Nase Wildlife Removal, a thriving business that is using Trapmate products.

“Skyhawk’s work in making electronic remote monitoring more reliable and easier to deploy stands out in the ERM industry,” said Nase. “I’m proud to be able to help further connect them with leaders in the pest and wildlife control communities.”

About Skyhawk

Skyhawk is a leader in the design, development of manufacturing of remote monitoring systems for challenging applications. An innovator in Internet of Things (IoT) technology, Skyhawk has developed the only IoT systems that run entirely on batteries, enabling new applications and eliminating any reliability on power or connectivity from deployment sites. Skyhawk’s Trapmate product line is the emerging leader in electronic remote monitoring for pest and wildlife control. The company, part of electronic manufacturing conglomerate the PICA Group, is headquartered in Derry, N.H., with offices around the U.S., in Malaysia and in China.

Collect data with SPP monitoring systems

James Miller, ACE

James Miller, ACE

The counts, count!

IPM practitioners know they must employ a means of assessing the level of stored product pests (SPP) infestation in a client’s home or food facility. That means visual inspection, historical references and the use of monitoring systems. SPP monitoring systems are just one way to collect data.

After the data is collected, use it to answer the following:

  • What insect(s) are being found?
  • What are the risk characteristics/biology of said insect(s)?
  • How many are there?
  • What aspects of your IPM program will eliminate and prevent them?

With data, you can begin to predict the next generation of pests and when will be best to apply a product for mitigation. Collecting more data after treatment informs you whether your strategy is working. Collecting monitoring data after the problem is mitigated also can help you predict seasonal activity.

You see, data is king. You can unlock a world of knowledge just by using it. Make the counts matter.

Control Solutions Inc. (CSI): PDS and Doxem Precise

IMAGE: CONTROL SOLUTIONS INC. (CSI)

IMAGE: CONTROL SOLUTIONS INC. (CSI)

In the realm of multi-family housing pest management, a prevalent concern is the presence of cockroaches, known for their potential to spread disease and produce significant allergens. These resilient pests often find their way into multi-family housing, easily moving between different units and posing a significant challenge for property managers.

Acknowledging this issue, CSI developed the Precision Delivery System (PDS), which is an innovative, handheld micro-duster, designed to deliver precise amounts of dry flowable product. Doxem Precise is the dry flowable bait designed for use in the PDS that effectively controls tough cockroach populations.

Key benefits of this system include the ability to place Doxem Precise deep into cracks, voids, and harborages with precise and consistent applications. Moreover, Doxem Plus is easily transferred between nestmates, leading to a second level of control. The dry flowable bait withstands extreme temperatures (won’t freeze or melt) and can be used in and around electrical equipment. Additionally, it can be used in sensitive accounts such as schools, daycares, nursing facilities and hospitals, including kitchens in these facilities. One application remains effective for more than 6 months.

About CSI
For more than 20 years, CSI has been a leader in the development of sustainable pest control formulations, with a wide array of active ingredients. According to its website, CSI is one of the fastest-growing companies in the industry. As one of the 40 subsidiaries that make up ADAMA, the fifth-largest agricultural chemical company in the world, CSI is able to not only offer a large selection of products, but also introduce such innovations as Combination Chemistry, Pressurized Solutions and Encapsulated Solutions.

The company can actually trace its roots to 1958, when President and CEO Mark Boyd’s father, Richard, purchased a small pest control company in Pasadena, Texas, and founded Ford’s Pest Control. By 1960, Richard Boyd launched Ford’s Chemical to formulate and sell pest control solutions to colleagues and the public. In 1976, he merged the two businesses into Ford’s Chemical and Service. Third quarter 2023 reader poll responses

Photo: Olemedia/E+/Getty Images

Photo: Olemedia/E+/Getty Images

Since we last compiled Pest Management Professional (PMP) magazine poll results, we have received some excellent insights from readers in our monthly polls.

We also post the same question to our columnists and PMP Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) members each month in print, to get their responses. The answers that don’t fit on the “Question of the Month” page for the print edition are always included in the online version. For example, what follow are some of our most recent polls, with a link to the contributor/EAB responses and with a few of our favorite reader responses, too.

Here’s just a sampling of the best of the best from the third quarter of 2023:

July: How has your training program changed in recent years?

  • PMP Contributor/EAB responses
  • “Emerging generations of technicians, as well as new technologies, has changed the way that we present training information. We have increased the use of ‘micro-learning’ tools into the continuing education/training processes that we have used over the last two years. This has allowed us to train employees to what is needed and where/how they want it. Five-minute modules on safety, technical and application topics have all been helped by this. We can now train where, when and what is needed in a very timely manner. Add this to a very structured in-class and in-the-field training program that is hands-on and in-person, and our training has become very well rounded and appreciated by all of our teams.”
  • “When I started in 2012, we did not have a dedicated training program. Instead, you were simply given the state books and went with whoever had the hardest day. Now present day, we have a dedicated training department that covers everything from preparing for the state exam to on-the-job training following our company’s standard operating procedures (SOPs).”
  • “It has become more robust.”
  • “We’ve gone from all in-person training meetings to covering the basics in recorded video presentations and holding in-person sessions for discussion topics.”

August: How do you think artificial intelligence (AI) will affect — or is already affecting — the pest management industry?

  • PMP Contributor/EAB responses
  • “I’m not aware of any effect on our industry yet.”
  • “It could help ‘predict’ pest population increases by proactively recommending schedules, frequencies of service, products to use as well as assisting in the scheduling of the affected customers. It could also be developed to provide better inspections up to and including coupling with scanning technologies that utilize various light spectrums.”
  • “AI is and will continue to affect just about every aspect of our lives including our industry. From writing of articles such as this one, to creating prep sheets based on aggregated data, to making decisions about the best course of treatment at a particular type of property. This will continue to evolve and perhaps even get better over time; however, what will never go away is that there will always need to be original thought (people) unique to a situation. The inputs for AI to operate will always need to be present. So, if we focus on what the positive could be: We as pest management professionals need to hone our skills surrounding inspecting, communicating and implementing solutions. AI can help steer us to treatment types, appropriate chemicals, understanding biology, habits, etc. If you want to focus on the negative, you will just fall behind. Yes, there will be inaccurate information that comes from this, especially until all the correct inputs are in place. We need to weed out the bad information on the internet at some point. AI, like the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century, will help us humans be better and more efficient if we let it and make sure the resources it has to help with decision making is accurate.”
  • “Revolution in pest control…
    • Real-time detection — IoT sensors powered by AI swiftly detect pests, identifying species, and sending 24/7 alerts — saving manpower.
    • Predictive insights — AI forecasts infestations by analyzing weather, seasons, and past trends, enabling proactive measures.
    • Drone surveillance — AI-equipped autonomous drones swiftly scan vast areas, collecting crucial data on pest populations for smart interventions.
    • Precision treatments — Autonomous robots offer targeted, eco-friendly, and cost-efficient pest solutions.
    • Enhanced training — AI aids in training through virtual simulations, deepening knowledge on pest ecology and effective practices.
    • Supply chain mastery — AI streamlines the production and distribution of pest management products.
    • Seamless communication — AI updates clients on services and offers valuable pest insights.
    • R&D boost — AI speeds up the evaluation of new pest management innovations.
    • Regulatory adherence — AI ensures adherence to regulations by monitoring pesticide use and sending timely alerts.”

September: How can pest control companies become more eco-friendly?

  • PMP Contributor/EAB responses
  • “Practice integrated pest management, use green products where possible, update fleet to hybrid or electric vehicles (EVs).”
  • “Less product applied and more exclusion. Educate the client about pressure and tolerance.”

Pest Control Insulation: The Attic Power Box

IMAGE: PEST CONTROL INSULATION

IMAGE: PEST CONTROL INSULATION

From the makers of TAP Pest Control Insulation comes the Attic Power Box — the ultimate power solution for powering your insulation blowers while working in a residential attic. The box can be plugged in to a dryer or range outlet and adds 48 amps at 120 volts. Don’t worry about finding power or lugging around a bulky generator ever again! The Attic Power Box Package includes a 30-amp power distribution center; a three-wire old dryer adapter; a four-wire new dryer adapter; a three-wire old range adapter; a four-wire new range adapter; a 25-foot, heavy-gauge extension cord; a rolling pack bag; and a three-year warranty.

About Pest Control Insulation

Thermal Acoustical Pest Control (TAP) Insulation was created in 2001 by industry visionaries as the ideal fusion of two value propositions important to homeowners: pest control and energy-efficient insulation. Based on environmentally responsible cellulose insulation, this premium insulation product would save consumers money through superior energy efficiency and help protect their home against a myriad of common pests, including ants, cockroaches and termites.

While energy costs were skyrocketing for consumers, pest management companies were losing employees in the fall and winter due to the seasonality of the industry. Seemingly unrelated, the new TAP Pest Control Insulation represented a major opportunity for household energy efficiency at the consumer level and valued employee retention for pest management companies.

The result would be the “greenest of the green” — an insulation made up of almost 90 percent recycled paper, that would also eliminate pests from gaining access to homes through attics, crawlspaces and wall voids.

Raising the tide no matter the times

Dennis Jenkins

Dennis Jenkins

I was raised in the pest control industry, starting at the age of 3, thanks to my father, Pest Management Professional (PMP) Hall of Famer (Class of 2005) Bob Jenkins Sr., purchasing what was then known as ABC Pest Control in 1965. I even have vague memories of Dad at the office on Hildebrand Avenue in San Antonio, Texas.

I have more memories from his next office on Austin Highway, but the most memories were from the building he built on IH-35 headed north out of town. This was the office I worked out of and had various jobs.

By the time I had graduated college, Dad already had been approached by Orkin to purchase ABC. I knew he was having conversations with Orkin, and I had a hard time being in the office knowing what was going to happen. Both of my brothers, Bobby and Raleigh, already had started their offices in Austin and Houston, Texas, respectively, but I was still at the home office in San Antonio. I avoided going to our office as much as possible, devoting myself to troubleshooting a particularly difficult rodent account to help keep my mind off what I thought was going to be the inevitable.

I remember the company meeting where Dad was going to announce the sale. At the last moment, he broke down and said he could not do it. I remember a huge feeling of relief.

Forging my own path

Fast forward a few years, and Waste Management entered the pest control market. Dad had served as 1987-88 president of the then-National Pest Control Association (NPCA). They approached several former presidents, knowing each one had a solid business in place, and enticed them with money and the opportunity to help them build “the premier pest control company” in the U.S.

ABC Home & Commercial Services of Austin

At that point, I went to work for Waste Management Pest Control (WMPC) as regional technical director. A few months later, they purchased Simmons Pest Control in Nashville, Tenn., where I relocated with my family.

After one year there, I resigned. My wife, Jennifer, and I packed up the baby, the dog and the belongings and moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, area to start our business there in 1989. We had no customers. Jennifer went to work teaching school, and I hit the streets. Since that time, I’ve worked hard and had some great people join our team.

The pest control industry was and remains a fantastic industry. It is one that those outside of it don’t really understand, and those in it really do. We have been validated in part by the fact that pest control businesses typically are valued much higher than other businesses when divesting companies.

Changing industry

In the almost 40 years I’ve been full-time working in the industry, I’ve seen a lot of change. One thing that has not changed is the overwhelming desire of everyone to “raise the tide” — to elevate the image and professionalism of our industry. The whole industry is one big networking group. People share openly; they are just as interested in your success as their own. This is true even in a local market. I assure you this does not happen in every industry.

Of course, there have been big changes in our industry. Regulation, for example, has taken away some of our materials and changed the way we do business sometimes, but the need for our industry has continued to grow.

For me personally, this industry cannot be beaten. The people, the sharing, the repetitive nature, the changes — it all has made for a great career. As I look to the future, I look forward to retirement. But just like my dad and brothers, I have the next generation involved in our business. They are preparing to kick “the old guys” to the curb and show what they can do. I’m here to help ensure a smooth changing of the guard, to do my part to raise the tide for all for years to come.

Find where SPP originate

Greg Pettis

Greg Pettis

A common “hide-and-seek” game in pest control is finding the source of stored product pests (SPP) and learning what the source actually is. One thing to understand is, although they may be seen in the pantry, that doesn’t mean that’s where they are originating. It may turn out to be the hope chest with stored holiday decorations in the living room next to the kitchen, and the SPP were the IMM in Christmas wreaths.

SPP accounts can be a great situation to use green products that not only kill, but clean without worrying about contaminating anything returned to the hope chest (or other harborage area). Also, you can use certain all-natural insecticides to wipe down shelves in the pantry to prevent secondary infestations.

When it comes to food safety, don’t make the situation worse with an off-label product choice. Look to products that are all-natural and hold U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exempt status thanks to their ingredients being on the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) 25(b) list.

4 predictions for the future of pest management

Judy Black

Judy Black, BCE

2033? It’s difficult to even comprehend how distant that feels — and at the same time, how the time will fly by. Here are some of my predictions on how the industry will have evolved by 2033 — the year the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and Pest Management Professional (PMP) celebrate their 100th anniversaries — based on what I have seen and experienced in my more than three decades in the field:

1. Exterior rodent control programs will become more sustainable after undergoing significant changes in the next 5 to 10 years. Rodenticides still will be available, important and incorporated into rodent management programs, but we will no longer use them as rodent activity indicators. Monitoring lures will be paired with exclusion, habitat reduction, traps, cameras, electronic monitoring and sensing to provide customers with rodent management programs that are not too heavily weighted to rodenticides. What remains to be seen, though, is whether the pest management industry will have control of the steering wheel, or if regulation will be the driver. Simply put, we will not be servicing regularly spaced exterior bait stations with rodenticide in them in 2033. What our programs look like, at this point, are up to us. Let’s not let regulation drive us to sustainability; let’s make it our choice.

2. Remote monitoring and sensing will be practical for many pests, not just rodents. These devices will not completely replace physical visits, but they will decrease the amount of time we spend at each location. Keep in mind our effectiveness is not dependent on the weapons we use; it is dependent on the warrior who wields them. Our service personnel — our warriors — are always going to be crucial.

3. Artificial intelligence (AI) will play a significant role in training, identifying trends, analyzing trends and proposing solutions. It is a big world out there, with a great deal of fantastic information on how to best treat for pests. AI will allow that world to get smaller for our service and sales personnel. This means you won’t have to search through volumes of material to find a description of that one specific task you want to do: AI will find it for you quickly and will be able to comment on its potential effectiveness in your situation.

4. Urban entomology professorship endowments will be primarily funded by the pest management industry. If they aren’t, we will only have ourselves to blame for the disappearance of urban entomology programs. I’m using this column as a call to action for large, medium and small companies and manufacturers to recognize the value these programs bring to us by considering funding endowed professorships in urban entomology. The funding program must include protective language so the monies cannot be assigned to other areas of the university when endowed professors retire.

While I could go on with more process-oriented predictions, I want to switch gears as I get closer to retirement and say how confident I am that the industry is in good hands with technical expertise. I’ve been able to work closely the past few years with Rollins’ Glen Ramsey, BCE; Dr. Ben Hottel, BCE; and Ian Williams, BCE. All three are amazing urban entomologists with bright futures. They make me proud every day and give me confidence that as entomologists of my “era” retire, we are leaving the industry in good hands. (For those of you young urban entomologists I didn’t name, but whom I feel the same way about — I’ll text you a cat meme shortly!)

Kness Pest Defense: Triple Threat Trifecta

IMAGE: KNESS PEST DEFENSE

IMAGE: KNESS PEST DEFENSE

Step up your game with Kness’s Triple Threat Trifecta of mousetraps: Snap-E, Pro-Ketch, and Ketch-All.

The Snap-E combines simplicity with deadly effectiveness. The vertical strike bar travels half the distance to catch a mouse. Its quick response and easy rodent disposal make it a sustainable choice for your toolkit.

Pro-Ketch, designed for versatility, captures both rodents and insects with ease. Its durable construction and multiple entry points ensure you’re always one step ahead of pests. The All-In-One hinged lid makes for easier cleaning, ultimately reducing service time.

Ketch-All, the simple solution, offers humane pest control. The Ketch-All live catch mouse trap uses a mouse’s natural curiosity as bait. It’s ideal for sensitive environments such as public spaces or agricultural settings, delivering impressive results without chemicals.

About Kness Pest Defense

Per company history, the Ketch-All was invented by a young, widowed father of six, Austin Enos “Brick” Kness, in 1924. Mice were prevalent at the high school in which Kness was a custodian, “and led him to the idea of the ‘box’ trap. He built the first trap from a square oilcan, a Tuxedo Tobacco can, a spring from a curtain rod, and the wood base of a crate. The first night he set his trap, he captured five mice.

“He was elated and showed the teachers and his friends. He was encouraged to build others for his friends and to seek a patent. By 1927, Kness Mfg. Co. was formed to produce the KetchAll Automatic Mousetrap and another of Kness’ inventions, the RotoBow tree saw.”

Expanding the team gives Tailor Made room to grow

Tailor Made Pest ControlFor those of you who have been following my antics in this great magazine for the past 17 years, you know I tend to stretch myself too thin sometimes. By my fifth year in business, Schopen Pest Solutions was really taking shape. I had hired two techs and I was starting to form an idea of what my standard operating procedures (SOPs) and key performance indicators (KPIs) would look like.

Everything was going great. I was an elder at my church, I was on a bowling team, I was coaching a travel baseball team, I was writing on a regular basis for this magazine and my company was growing quickly. My only problem was that I was neglecting my wife and “queen,” Tami.

After some soul searching and very grown-up talks with the Queen, I gave up the bowling team, finished my term as an elder and reduced my workload. I promised to be home from work every day by 6 p.m., and we agreed to go on a minimum of two dates per month. Not only did doing all this save my marriage, it gave me perspective on the proper balance for home, work and outside activities.

A man on the go

I’m telling you all this because I see a lot of me in Christian Allan, owner of Tailor Made Pest Control in Louisville, Ky. He can’t sit still. Whether it is working on his business or helping his friend James Shields with the pet business Derby City Poop Scoop, Allan is always on the move.

Despite his additional side hustles, like promoting another friend’s charcuterie food company or being hired as a professional soap foamer for parties (yes, it’s a thing, and is especially a hit with kids), Allan is growing a solid pest control company. As I write this in mid-August, Allan is up 156 percent from this time in 2022. With the help of a full-time tech, Carrie, that he hired this summer, he is on pace to hit $282,000 in revenue.

Christian Allen

Christian Allen

While Tailor Made is growing, so are Allan’s outside interests. Are they too much? His wife, Contea, doesn’t think so.

“I’m very proud of all of the projects Christian is involved in,” the schoolteacher told me. She also added that, “I have an immense amount of respect for the way he shows up for everything he is involved in.”

What I like about Allan is his passion for our industry and the fun he has being a pest pro. He’s constantly learning from his peers and offering advice to other newbies. His Facebook posts are legendary, and there is no denying his love for social media. He works harder at social media than Ryan Reynolds does at selling Wrexham merchandise. He puts out posts faster than Keanu Reeves films movie sequels.

Some people fanatically cheer on the Georgia Bulldogs or New York Yankees; Allan gets goosebumps when someone likes his posts. “Posting is a stress release,” he told me. “I don’t let social media get in the way of my company, and I hope my posts are useful.”

Allan’s content is sometimes controversial, but always funny and intelligent. His wife agrees. “From the day I met him, he has been one of the funniest people I know.” She and I both enjoy his “bug funeral” stories.

Improving customer service

Tailor MadeGetting back to business, Carrie runs the established route with regular clients so Allan is free to handle more jobs that he enjoys, like moles and wildlife. Having a technician has also helped him offer same-day services to his new clients, which has helped Tailor Made’s growth. Another benefit of having a tech is that Allan is now able to sit in the office once a week to catch up on paperwork, sales and customer service.

When we did his SWOT analysis in the spring (see Pest Management Professional’s May issue), Allan stated that two of his weaknesses were answering phone calls and customer service skills. Over the past few months, he has worked very hard with his office employee, Sara, on improving their responsiveness and empathy. One thing he’s done is listen to Sara while she is on the phone, and critique her conversations. A nice twist is that Sara is listening to him as well, and coaching him, too. The results have been fantastic. After working on their customer service and sales skills, they immediately signed up 70 new clients in July.

Winter is quickly approaching, and my bespectacled buddy already is looking ahead at working on a business model for his growing company. He wants to bundle more services, set up simpler pricing, and create SOPs for services. He fully expects to hire another tech next year, so he also wants to polish his managerial skills.

“I hope I’m not a jerk as a boss,” he said. After reflecting for a moment, he added, “I don’t necessarily want to be a ‘boss’; I want to manage my people without micromanaging.”

Allan enthusiastically follows some other “influencers” on Facebook such as Paul Bello (PJB Consulting); Sean Licalzi (Obex Pest Defense); Pest Daily founder Seth Garber; my fellow PMP columnist Jerry Schappert (Pest Cemetery); and the boys at The Pest Posse.

Allan says he learns a lot from these people, but he feels he has something to offer the industry, too. “I think other start-ups can learn from my struggles and hopefully, I’m influencing them through my hard work and humor.”

Don’t be surprised to see this article pop up on his Facebook page. Influence away, my friend!

Rentokil Terminix marks 1 year with $100,000 donations

PHOTO: RENTOKIL TERMINIX

PHOTO: RENTOKIL TERMINIX

Rentokil Terminix donated $70,000 to Feeding America in the U.S. and $30,000 to Second Harvest in Canada as part of the first anniversary of the merger of the two companies.

“We are humbled in making this donation to support the work of feeding thousands of children and families across North America,” John Myers, president and CEO of U.S. pest control for Rentokil Terminix, said in the news release. “This donation is just another example of how our newly combined company has harmonized our mission, vision and values. Our combined organization has a long-standing history of giving back to the communities where we live and work.”

In addition, the company will kick off a month-long food drive to help replenish food donation centers across the continent. Colleague volunteers of technicians, inspection professionals and managers, will collect canned food donations from friends and neighbors throughout October.

At the end of the 30 days, local branch managers will coordinate donation drop offs at hundreds of Feeding America’s and Second Harvest’s donation centers, coinciding with an employee contest for the top branches that will win team meals prepared and served by company executives.

According to the USDA, more than 34 million people, including 9 million children, in the U.S. are food insecure. Every community in the country is home to families who face hunger, but rural communities are especially hard hit by hunger.

In Canada, there are 5.8 million people facing food insecurity and struggling to access nutrition, according to the University of Toronto. At the same time, according to research from Second Harvest, 58 percent of all food produced for Canadians is lost or wasted.

The day of celebration was marked with the theme of “Spirit Day,” where branches across the country were decked out in red and green decorations, and colleagues were encouraged to wear their favorite team’s jerseys or colors. From foam fingers to pom poms, Rentokil Terminix branches looked great as the teams enjoyed outdoor meals together and managers — or, in this case, head coaches — delivered presentations acknowledging national and local victories while applauding top performers and key contributors.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) launched its Key Partner Program at the opening ceremony of the 90th annual PestWorld convention in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The new program redefines corporate responsibility and industry collaboration by fostering an unprecedented level of support, volunteerism, and leadership to benefit the industry as a whole.

“The success of any industry relies on the collective efforts of its key stakeholders,” said NPMA CEO Dominique Stumpf, CAE. “The Key Partners Program is designed to unite leading pest control companies and set a new industry standard for collaboration, innovation, and mutual growth. On behalf of NPMA, it is with deep respect and gratitude that we recognize Arrow Exterminators, Rentokil-Terminix and Rollins, Inc. for stepping into this leadership position and pledging their unwavering support as Key Partners.”

Highlights of the Key Partners Program include:

  1. Sponsorship with purpose: Participating pest management companies are committed to sponsoring NPMA industry events, initiatives, educational programs and other collaborative efforts such as the Industry Issues Fund to drive positive change, advocate for, and defend and advance the industry. This commitment underscores their dedication to fostering growth and innovation and to legal advocacy and acton.
  2. Commitment to volunteerism: Key Partners are actively engaged in the association through volunteerism by participating in industry committees such as Workforce Development, IDEA and the PestVets Council among others, and allied industry groups such as QualityPro, the Professional Pest Management Foundation, and the Professional Pest Management Alliance. This hands-on involvement will empower Key Partners to contribute their expertise and insights to shape the future of the industry.
  3. Leadership and vision: Key Partners are also asked to pursue leadership positions within these committees and boards, leading by example to guide the industry towards greater success and help set strategic directions that benefit both the industry and NPMA’s membership.

NPMA President Marillian Missiti added, “We believe that true progress is achieved when we can all unite for a common cause or vision. The Key Partners Program is our way of amplifying our commitment to our industry and our mission of enabling NPMA members to be more professional, knowledgeable and profitable through education, industry leadership, public policy advocacy and growth of the market.”

The Key Partners program complements the supplier community’s Strategic Partner Program and allows NPMA to provide world-class educational opportunities and professional development to its members.

The merry widows

In the June 2003 issue, Dr. Hanif Gulmahamad wrote an article about brown widow spiders (Latrodectus geometricus) and western black widow spiders (L. hesperus). At the time, he was the integrated pest management (IPM) coordinator for the Los Angeles Unified School District in California. These days, he works as an industry consultant and still writes occasionally for the magazine. The original caption of this photo he submitted with the story states: “Vacuuming is no easy task in a cluttered classroom, but it’s a vital component of a good spider management program.”

Use LED ILTs to treat house flies

Stuart Mitchell

Dr. Stuart Mitchell, BCE, technical director, PestWest USA

The house fly (Musca domestica) is a food-seeking pest that does not rest.

In spills of flour, it will readily infest.

Yet a solution is at hand: LED ILTs across the land.

LED glue boards catch’em, that is the knack. Assess the problem, and then fight back.

Know their location and their trends, then you know where to defend.

It’s never something to dismiss: High numbers mean something is amiss.

Stop house flies and protect the public feast.

Make the facility a no-fly beast!

Rockwell Labs: EcoVia Fly Killer

IMAGE: ROCKWELL LABS

IMAGE: ROCKWELL LABS

Rockwell Labs introduces EcoVia Fly Killer, formulated to kill filth flies at the source and kill all life stages of flies. It also kills odor-causing bacteria. This new research-based, botanical insecticide is registered as a 25(b) category, minimum-risk product through the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). exempt from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It is designed for treating small and large flies, including fruit, phorid, drain, house, lesser house and blow fly species.

EcoVia Fly Killer uses naturally occurring plant oils to kill fly eggs and larvae, and kill and repel adult flies and kill odor-causing bacteria. The thickened formula coats the side of drains when applied directly; penetrates bio-films; and loosens grease and organic debris — assisting with cleanup. EcoVia Fly Killer can also be diluted with water and sprayed, foamed or mopped on larger surfaces.

The label includes broad-use sites indoors and outdoors, and can be applied wherever organic debris accumulates where small and large flies feed and lay eggs. EcoVia Fly Killer can also be applied when the facility is in operation. The product is biodegradable, considered to be safe for pipes and septic systems, and has a natural herbal-lemon scent. It is available in a 1-quart bottle.

About Rockwell Labs
