Last month, New York City Councilman Mark Levine introduced Bill No. 1289, “A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to inspections for bed bugs in theaters.” Levine also is the Council’s Health Chair.

The bill is summarized as directing “the commissioner of the Department of Consumer Affairs, in coordination with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, to develop a program for movie theaters to annually certify they are free of bed bugs. Failure to so certify would be punishable by a fine of $1,000.”

According to a writeup in Gothamist, “Private inspectors would handle the examinations, while the Department of Consumer Affairs would be responsible for oversight.”
