Overcoming the odds: Surviving as a small business in Washington

Did you know, according to Entrepreneur magazine, the state of Washington is the worst state to grow a business? According to an article from June 2024, small businesses in Washington fold quicker than the Seattle SuperSonics. Businesses crash harder in Washington than in any other state. Nearly 25 percent of all small businesses fail in Washington during the first year, 45 percent by the end of the second year and 58 percent after three years. For the record, Massachusetts was the best on the list.

Why do businesses have such a rough time in the Evergreen State? The list is looooong:

▶ For starters, Washington has an awful program called the Business and Occupation tax, a gross receipts tax on jobs performed by businesses in a municipality. Rates can vary per town, city, village or county. Delaware, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee and Texas also levy a form of this tax.

▶ Washington has the fourth-highest sales tax in the country.
▶ Currently at 53 cents a gallon, Washington has the third-highest fuel tax in the country.
▶ Washington has one of the highest estate taxes in the country.
▶ Washington has the fourth-highest capital gains tax in the country.
▶ Washington’s cost of living is 34 percent higher than the national average, while housing is 53 percent higher, according to apartment search website RentCafe.com.
▶ At $16.28 per hour, Washington currently has the highest minimum wage.

Elliott Hahn IMAGE: BIGFOOT PEST
Elliott Hahn IMAGE: BIGFOOT PEST

When you add in these factors — and many more we will talk about later — you have to wonder why Elliott Hahn decided to start Bigfoot Pest Management in Olympia in 2021. “I was a tech for two other companies that got bought out,” Hahn explained. “As a tech, I was tired of doing $300,000 per year for someone else.” He was also tired of missing family dinners and working on Saturdays. “I was sick of other people dictating my hours,” he adds. “Why can’t I work 50 hours per week for myself and double my income?”

So, despite the challenges of running a company in Washington, he says it is still worth it: “One-hundred-and-ten percent! I am very happy I made up my mind to start my own business.”

Changing plans

Hahn is a 41-year-old father of Russell, age 7, and Lucy, age 10. He has been married to Brittanie for over 11 years. Despite the struggles of running a company in Washington, his personal life is pretty sweet. He and his wife were raised in Olympia, and both his parents and in-laws live within a stone’s throw of their home. The bespectacled exterminator takes advantage of Washington’s gorgeous scenery and does a lot of hunting, fishing and baseball coaching.

Fourteen years ago, after graduating with his law degree from Central Washington University, he felt the climate in Washington wasn’t favorable toward the “men in blue.” At the suggestion of a friend, he gave pest control a shot.

Bigfoot offers mostly residential quarterly services. He stays away from mole work, which is usually pretty lucrative in Washington, and he doesn’t do wildlife services. He also shies away from bed bug work, but I am trying to coax him into including this valuable service.

Over the past few months, Hahn and I have been working on pricing, key performance indicators (KPIs) and creative marketing (yard signs and direct-mail postcards). But, each session, he would lament the problems he was having running a business in Washington.

Making it work

While the state of Washington doesn’t have a state income tax (yet), it still has a laundry list of things it taxes on each paycheck, including Federal Income Tax, Social Security, Medicare, Worker’s Comp insurance, Family and Medical Leave insurance, Long-Term Care insurance, Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA), Washington State Unemployment Insurance (WA SUI) and the Washington Employment Administration Fund (WA EAF).

Other roadblocks to running a pest control company in Washington include the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which takes a portion of the employee’s earnings each paycheck (hurting the worker) and up to 12 weeks off (for either parent) for childbirth, which hurts the employer. Washington requires 40 continuing education units (CEUs) that licensed techs must account for every five years. And they have to retest every five years! Compared to other states, like Illinois — which only requires nine CEUs every three years — or Wisconsin — which has no CEUs but requires a mandatory retest every five years — this can be cumbersome for smaller companies.

Then you have to add in the incredibly high sales tax that Hahn has to collect from his clients and the skyrocketing cost of housing. In late July, as I write this, Zillow.com estimates the average price for a home in Seattle is $880,401. The average cost for renting an apartment in Seattle is nearly $2,200. So, you can see why small businesses are being crushed in Washington.

Despite these obstacles, Hahn is making a go of it and is seeing good growth. His revenues were $291,000 in 2023 and $354,000 in 2024. His goal is to hit $400,000 in 2025.

Liphatech: Soft Bait Innovations

Group shot of Liphatech's 2025 lineup of soft bait products
IMAGE: LIPHATECH

Liphatech’s people and products support pest management professionals (PMPs) in delivering results when tackling even the most challenging rodent problems. Liphatech is well known for bringing market-leading soft baits, mini block rodenticides, non-toxic attractants, bait stations and IGI Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Powered by Liphatech.

Liphatech started with rodenticides and continues to offer PMPs a variety of active ingredient rodenticide formulations. All Liphatech soft baits are labeled for the control of Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus), roof rats (R. rattus), house mice (Mus musculus) and other rodent species, and they each offer a palatable formulation that maintains its integrity in hot environments.

Liphatech revolutionized rodenticide technology with the introduction of the first palatable soft bait, FirstStrike. Since then, Liphatech has added Resolv, TakeDown II and Flatline. Now known as The Soft Bait Innovators, Liphatech designs its soft baits to fit different rodent challenges or conditions while maintaining Liphatech’s well-known palatability and performance.

For clean-out, lingering rodents or heavy infestations, PMPs can turn to FirstStrike and its active ingredient difethialone, which was invented by and is exclusively available through Liphatech.

Resolv soft bait is a good choice for routine maintenance and PMPs facing moderate rodent infestations. It contains the active ingredient bromadiolone.

As an acute rodenticide, TakeDown II soft bait provides faster results than anticoagulant rodenticides. It is also effective in fighting anticoagulant-resistant rodent populations, especially those in commercial settings.

As what Liphatech describes as the first and only chlorophacinone soft bait rodenticide for the professional market, Flatline is a palatable, multi-feed solution. It is the best choice for everyday use to help stop damage caused by rodent activity.

If you are looking to monitor rodent activity, NoTox soft baits are formulated with ingredients that rodents can’t resist, contain no rodenticide and are designed to monitor activity.

Liphatech soft baits can be used with the company’s Aegis rat and mouse bait stations, which save PMPs time and are tamper-resistant. Quick-to-service and durable, these stations offer flexibility and a compact design. Rodents can see straight through to the exit before entry, helping to lure them in. The line includes Aegis-RP, Aegis-RP Anchor, Aegis Mouse and Aegis Rat.

The heightened technical expertise of the Liphatech team equates to some of the most elevated product knowledge and customer service found in the pest management industry today. They will help you determine the best soft bait solution for your pest challenges.

Kness Pest Defense: Multiple-catch Mousetraps

Image of Pro-Ketch with logo
IMAGE: KNESS PEST DEFENSE

When it comes to rodent control, Kness leads the industry with innovation and reliability. As the inventor of the first multiple-catch mousetrap — the Ketch-All — Kness continues to set the standard for professional-grade performance that pest management professionals (PMPs) trust.

Following on the heels of the Ketch-All ingenuity, the Pro-Ketch and Pro-Ketch Junior traps are also engineered to catch multiple mice — without the need for resetting. This time-saving design gives PMPs the efficiency they need while ensuring dependable results every time. Built from durable materials, these low-profile traps stand up to the demands of daily use in both residential and commercial environments.

A clear viewing window makes monitoring quick and simple, while the chemical-free design delivers an effective solution for sensitive areas where children and pets are present. With Pro-Ketch, PMPs can rely on the original innovation that continues to deliver unmatched results.

About Kness Pest Defense

Per company history, the Ketch-All was invented by a young, widowed father of six, Austin Enos “Brick” Kness, in 1924. Mice were prevalent at the high school in which Kness was a custodian, “and led him to the idea of the ‘box’ trap. He built the first trap from a square oilcan, a Tuxedo Tobacco can, a spring from a curtain rod, and the wood base of a crate. The first night he set his trap, he captured five mice.

“He was elated and showed the teachers and his friends. He was encouraged to build others for his friends and to seek a patent. By 1927, Kness Mfg. Co. was formed to produce the KetchAll Automatic Mousetrap and another of Kness’ inventions, the RotoBow tree saw.”

Brick Kness was inducted into the Pest Management Professional Hall of Fame in 2024.

Eliminating and reducing the frequency of stink bug encounters

Frishman_Austin300x300
Dr. Austin Frishman, BCE-Emeritus

How often do you deal with stink bugs (Pentatomidae)? Here are two memorable encounters I’ve had with the pest.

The roll with something extra

A consumer purchased a dozen fresh rolls and discovered an intact adult stink bug embedded in one of them. The bread was produced in a local bakery and then purchased in a local grocery store.

An inspection of the bakery revealed no signs of any stink bugs or exterior insects indoors. The exterior parking lot of the bakery was clean.

There was one issue, though. Cigarette butts were near the far edge of the parking lot. The adjacent field had high grass. Using a drop cloth and dragging it along the edge, I was able to catch a few live stink bugs, the same species found in the roll.

Photo: Petra Richli/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images
Photo: Petra Richli/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images

I never was able to prove it, but the following scenario seems logical: Employees not able to smoke indoors walk to the edge of the parking lot and smoke before returning to work. Stink bugs in the nearby grass could crawl onto their shoes or pants legs and be transported into the bakery without detection.

▶ Solution: I suggested the following four-pronged strategy:
⦁ Cut the grass in the field and along the parking lot regularly.
⦁ Create a designated smoking area that is not close to grass.
⦁ Install an insect light trap (ILT) in the front entrance lobby, where employees enter.
⦁ Train employees to check their clothes before entering the building.
⦁ For good measure, ensure all vents are properly screened.

▶ Conclusion: Neglected exterior grounds can result in a contaminated end product. It is not good enough to just identify an insect found in food; you must learn why it is there and what is needed to prevent it from happening again.

This salad stinks

Live stink bugs appeared on lettuce leaves of several salads prepared for children requiring a special diet in a hospital. The kitchen preparation area was in the center of a building in New York City. There were no exterior walls with windows where any insects could fly or crawl in.

An inspection of one of the kitchen ILTs revealed five live stink bugs. An inspection of the fresh lettuce crates revealed a few more.

▶ Solution: I told them to first, stop purchasing contaminated lettuce. Change vendors or have someone inspect where the lettuce is shipped from to ensure it is pest-free.

I then requested that a trustworthy staffer be put in charge of inspecting all incoming fresh produce entering the hospital before it is brought indoors.

▶ Conclusion: We must always expect the unexpected. Sometimes, a routine service can lead to preventing a health problem for vulnerable patients.

Dr. Frishman, a PMP Hall of Famer (Class of 2002), can be reached at PMPEditor@northcoastmedia.net.

Taking culture further than a buzzword

How can pest control company owners ensure ‘culture’ is more than a buzzword?

Dan Baldwin

Dan Baldwin

“Culture isn’t declared; it isn’t something reflected on a poster, newsletter or social media post. It’s demonstrated in how decisions are made when no one’s watching. When owners personally review safety reports, reward technicians for proactive communication, or include field staff in protocol updates, they’re showing that values aren’t just slogans. Posting a mission statement means little if managers ignore toxic behavior or let high performers bend the rules. But when everyone can see that feedback leads to real change, and leaders consistently model respect and accountability, culture becomes a reality, not a laminated catchphrase.”

Kurt Scherzinger

Kurt Scherzinger

“You have to lead by example. And if you ask the employees to act a certain way toward the culture, you’d better be the biggest example.”

Mark Sheperdigian

Mark Sheperdigian

“Participate! And reward employees who do, too. Of course, the culture you are trying to establish should come naturally to you, or you won’t be able to participate without appearing as a phony.”

Greg Baumann

Greg Baumann

“Culture is not handed out to employees; it is the perception of employees and customers. Interview samples of both groups and ask questions about their perceptions. Then adjust if what the owner thought is not reality. Include employees in developing the cornerstones of company values; that way, they all own and embrace it.”

Foster Brusca

IMAGE: Foster Brusca

“You build a strong culture the same way you get better at anything: By doing it consistently, repeating it often, and staying committed. Owners should start with it during onboarding, bring it up in training and point it out during reviews. If culture isn’t part of your team meetings, safety talks or how you approach sales, then it’s not really your culture; it’s just something you say. Make it real by working it into everything you and your employees do every day.”

Sheri Spencer Bachman

Sheri Spencer Bachman

“Owners must live it daily, not just post it on a wall. At Spencer Pest Services, we talked about our core values constantly, used them in hiring and accountability, and built them into how we recognized our team. I now coach clients to involve their team in defining culture by asking, ‘How would you describe the values of this company?’ That conversation builds ownership and clarity. Culture must be reinforced in meetings, performance reviews and decision-making. It starts at the top, but it thrives when the whole team is invested and living it.”

Wildlife Control Supplies: Raptor Edge Magnetic Bait Station

Raptor Edge Magnetic Rat Station
IMAGE: WILDLIFE CONTROL SUPPLIES

Back by popular demand! The Raptor Edge Bait Station is one of the most adaptable and multi-functional bait stations on the market. It features bait pegs for rodenticide, and also includes a Big Snap-E rat trap when capture is the goal. Integral trap brackets will also firmly hold other, simliar-sized rat/chipmunk snap traps.

The exclusive magnetized system allows you to attach the bait station directly to walls or undersides of dumpsters, foodservice equipment or metal doors. Now your bait station doesn’t have to be left sitting on the ground. It can be placed more more discreetly, or located in high-traffic areas for rodents that were previously difficult to maneuver into. Whatever the application, the Raptor Edge is capable of “sticking to” the task. The station is tamper-resistant and instantly locks when closed.

About Wildlife Control Supplies (WCS)

Rentokil Pest Control has won the Innovation of the Year award at the prestigious National Pest Awards 2025 in Manchester, England. The winning entry demonstrated Rentokil’s PestConnect Optix cameras, which use artificial intelligence (AI) for real-time pest detection and identification and comes as Rentokil celebrates its 100th year of operation.

The Innovation of the Year category recognises the vital role that innovation plays in the pest control sector. Entries had to demonstrate a unique and novel method of dealing with a challenging pest, a new business idea or business development concept.

“We are delighted to have won the Innovation of the Year award, which recognizes not only the power behind our unique technology but also the outstanding work of the Rentokil Pest Control team across the UK and globally,” Paul Blackhurst, head of the technical academy at Rentokil Pest Control, said in a news release. “In recent years, we have transformed pest control through digital innovation, embracing internet-connected solutions and AI. Our portfolio now includes advanced remote monitoring systems, data analytics platforms and mobile apps, helping customers stay ahead of pest risks with smarter, more efficient services.”

The win at the industry awards comes as Rentokil Pest Control celebrates its 100th anniversary.

About Rentokil

Rentokil was founded in 1925 after Professor Harold Maxwell-Lefroy’s successful battle to eradicate deathwatch beetles from the medieval roof timbers of Parliament’s Westminster Hall. Each year, the company conducts over 25 million pest control service visits to customer premises, covering over 737 million miles in its fleet of service vehicles, with around 60,000 colleagues operating in 90 countries. Rentokil Pest Control also has a network of connected pest control devices in customers’ premises around the world, generating over 1,000 messages every minute.

Can your business survive without you? Questions to ask yourself

When you’re a runner, injury is inevitable. I’ve had my share of injuries over the years, but until now, all quickly healed with a little rest and rehab.

This one, though, has been very different than anything else I’ve had to deal with. It began when I twisted my ankle on a trip to Florida, a mild sprain that would heal with rest and ice. I tried to be smart and worked with a physical therapist to get me back into shape.

But as my ankle healed, I began to have pain in my opposite knee. I assumed it was just overuse as it compensated for my bad ankle. The pain was manageable and I still had lots of flexibility.

While I wanted to be smart, here’s where I got a little dumb. I was supposed to ease back into running. To run for a few minutes at a time at slow paces and gradually build back. Well, that only lasted for a day. Then, I rushed back to my previous pace or distance and re-injured myself.

I’d like to say I only did this once, but that would be a lie. I ran a few more times and each one set me back even further. Finally, an MRI showed that I tore my meniscus. My doctor felt that everything I should have been doing regarding rest and rehabilitation gave me better chances than surgery. I was on the right path, as long as I didn’t run.

Now I find myself in unfamiliar territory, unable to do something I’ve loved my entire life. And when you’re in the dark moments of injury, your mind sometimes drifts into negativity. What if I can never run again?

One question

It reminded me of decades ago when I began to take over our business from my dad. Like many small family businesses, money was always tight. I was responsible for everything. I did all the training, hiring, sales work, accounting, payroll. You name it and I did it. And we began to grow.

Then one day, my wife asked me a simple question: “What would happen if you couldn’t work?”

Such a simple question, but it hit me like a ton of bricks. We all know bad things could happen, but most times, we don’t think about it. But now I did: What if I became disabled or worse? What would happen to the business? To my family?

I knew without me, the business would fail. And quickly. It would affect both my family and the families of everyone who worked for us.

This is a question that every small business needs to ask itself. Can my business survive without me?

So I knew there was a problem. Now the challenge came in how to fix it.

In a perfect world, I would be able to hire multiple managers who’d be able to take over everything that I do. But there was no way we could afford that in one big step. Just like my rehab process, I couldn’t push and needed to break things down in smaller steps.

Necessary Delegation

First, I needed someone if I wasn’t available, someone who could keep everything running smoothly and our current customers happy. This was the first job opening I ever posted online — and one of the first applicants was the perfect fit.

He’d just graduated from college and had a background in computers and sales. It was hard for me to delegate and watch others handle things. But, when it is with the right person, you figure out how to make it work.

A couple of years later, we were ready to add someone to help with sales. We tried a few salespeople from other industries, but none of them worked out because they didn’t know pest control. But one of our top technicians was also a Pastor at his church. Talk about the perfect combination: he knew all the technical info and had the personality to deal with any customer. He hit the ground running and never looked back.

It took time, but we got there in slow, small steps. I still remember the first time I was able to take a vacation – and actually enjoy the vacation – knowing that everything was running smoothly.

I couldn’t do it alone. Admitting that made my company stronger. Just like my rehab now. I may not be able to hit the road just yet, but soon I will be back even stronger. One small step at a time.

Have a Great Run!

When it comes to tackling serious rodent infestations, size truly matters. The 24XL Jumbo Rodent Glue Tray is the largest addition to the Catchmaster Pro line. Measuring a generous 10.875 x 10.25 inches, this glue tray provides a massive 81 square inches of catching power — more than double the capture area of the Catchmaster Pro 48R Series. J.F. Oakes: Fall Pro-Pest Giveaway

Graphic promoting J.F. Oakes' fall contest
IMAGE: J.F. OAKES

Every year, pest management professionals (PMPs) tell the J.F. Oakes team how Pro-Pest Professional Rodent Lures, made in the USA, have helped them solve the toughest rodent problems. Now, the company wants to hear your best story — and reward you for it.

J.F. Oakes is giving away $6,000 worth of Pro-Pest products this fall to three lucky PMPs who submit their most jaw-dropping, laugh-out-loud or downright brilliant Pro-Pest success stories.

Each winner will receive:

  • A 50-count box of each flavor of Pro-Pest Lures:
    🧀 Original
    🥓 Mouth Waterin’ Bacon
    🍫 Peanut Butter-n-Chocolate
    🌰 Macadamia Nut
  • 5 Pro-Pest UV LED Rodent Tracker Flashlights
  • 100 Minigard Bait Stations

📦 That’s a $2,000 prize package for each of the three winners!

About J.F. Oakes

For 26 years, Jim Oakes worked as a salesman for termite and rodent control products with a major chemical manufacturer, collaborating closely with distributors and pest control companies across the southeast. He identified a specific need for product lines tailored to the pest control industry, and in May 1989, he founded J.F. Oakes Sales & Marketing.

Drawing on his extensive experience with termites and treatment methods, Oakes’ first product lines were drill bits and spray hoses. The Sheffield Masonry Drill Bits were designed with a focus on durability, using high-quality European steel, and offered a full range of shanks, diameters, and lengths commonly used by pest control companies. The Chemtrol spray hose, now known as Chemoak, was developed with consideration for chemical resistance, safety, working pressures, flexibility, and ease of use.

Almost three decades later, the company’s goal remains the same: to provide innovative, reliable products that meet the specific needs of pest control professionals. Today, the product lines have expanded beyond equipment to include a wide range of solutions, such as Advantage Flying Insect and Yellow Jacket Traps, Pro-Pest Professional Lures for Rodents and Nuisance Wildlife, XLure Pheromone Monitoring Traps for stored product and fabric insects, and Pro-Pest and Safestore pheromone traps and kits. The company also offers Pro-Pest Pantry & Clothes Moth traps, Pro-Pest Crawling Insect Traps and Pro-Pest Bedbug monitors.

Thomas Pest joins backpack giveaway for students in need

IMAGE: Thomas Pest
IMAGE: Thomas Pest

Thomas Pest Services joined forces with Hodges T-Shirt & Apparel, Morabito Lawn & Tree Care and the Hudson Elks to support the annual Backpack Giveaway, helping local students in need in the Chatham and Ichabod Crane School Districts start the school year prepared for success.

The Backpack Giveaway, founded last year by Hodges T-Shirt & Apparel, began with a mission to ease the burden of back-to-school costs for local families. In its first year, 80 backpacks were distributed to children in need. Thanks to growing community support, the initiative expanded this year, providing 100 fully stocked backpacks for students. In addition to the main giveaway, the businesses donated 20 backpacks directly to the Chatham and Ichabod Crane School Districts to ensure more students had the tools they need to thrive in the classroom.

Sarah Thomas-Clark, vice president and co-founder of Thomas Pest Services, said in a release, “Supporting our community goes beyond pest protection—it’s about helping local families feel secure, cared for and ready for the future. We’re honored to partner with fellow businesses and give back to students in such a meaningful way.”

The Backpack Giveaway was held prior to the start of the school year at Hodges T-Shirt & Apparel, where families gathered for the first-come, first-serve distribution. Organizers say they hope to see the effort continue to grow each year, with even more local businesses and community members joining in to support area youth.

Sewer Assassin: Pest Strip Holder

Image of Sewer Assassin's Pest Strip holder
IMAGE: SEWER ASSASSIN

The new Sewer Assassin Pest Strip Holder is a groundbreaking add-on for the patented Sewer Assassin bait station, engineered specifically to combat sewer-breeding pests like drain flies (Psychodidae) and American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) directly within the plumbing system. Designed to work seamlessly with the in-ground cleanout installation of the Sewer Assassin device, this upgrade allows pest management professionals to deploy Nuvan ProStrips’ controlled-release vapor action right where these pests live and breed: inside the pipes.

After conventional treatments are performed, hundreds and even thousands of pests can continue to survive undisturbed deep inside plumbing systems, safe from traditional sanitation, foams, sprays and surface applications. The Sewer Assassin Pest Strip Holder changes that. By holding a 16-ounce Nuvan ProStrip securely on the device, it releases a steady stream of vaporized insecticide throughout the interior of the entire plumbing system, controlling hidden infestations at the source.

This approach offers long-lasting residual control and is especially beneficial in situations where plumbing may be cracked, compromised or improperly sealed — conditions that allow pest populations to rebound quickly. With the Sewer Assassin Pest Strip Holder, you can maintain a protective barrier and eliminate pests before they have a chance to re-enter the structure.

Senske Family of Companies acquires Houston-based Green ER

LOGO: Senske Family of Companies
LOGO: Senske Family of Companies

Quick hits

Senske Family of Companies (SFC) based in Kennewick, Wash., acquired Houston, Texas-based Green ER Lawns, Trees & Pest, rebranding it as Emerald Lawns.
• This marks SFC’s 20th acquisition since partnering with private equity firm GTCR.
• The deal strengthens SFC’s presence across 16 U.S. states and continues its aggressive expansion strategy

Acquisition details

SFC added another piece to its growing empire with the acquisition of Houston-based Green ER Lawns, Trees & Pest, Inc. Founded by Luis Martin, Green ER built its reputation on quality service and transparent communication before joining the SFC portfolio.

The transition will see Green ER rebrand as Emerald Lawns, SFC’s established lawn care brand serving Texas markets.

Casey Taylor, CEO of Senske Family of Companies, said in a release, “SFC is thrilled to welcome Green ER to our growing family of companies. Green ER has earned the trust of its customers through consistent results, quality programs and a customer-first approach. We look forward to building on that foundation and welcoming those customers and employees to Emerald Lawns.”

About Senske Family of Companies

Founded in 1947 as Chemical Weed & Pest Control, the company later became known as Senske Services. Following a strategic investment from GTCR in December of 2022, Senske Services became Senske Family of Companies and has expanded its portfolio to include 10 additional brands and now serves customers in 16 U.S. states and Canada.

The bigger picture

The announcement leads to some identifiable trends in the professional pest control industry, including:

  • Market consolidation continues: With 20 acquisitions under its belt since the GTCR partnership, SFC is aggressively consolidating the home services market. If you’re an independent operator in Texas or surrounding states, expect increased competition from well-funded regional players.
  • Private equity pressure: GTCR’s backing means SFC has the capital for acquisitions and can offer competitive packages to quality companies. This suggests higher acquisition prices for pest management professionals (PMPs) looking to sell, but also means more competitive pressure for those staying independent.
  • Integrated service model: This approach combines lawn care, tree care and pest control under one roof. The integrated pest management model is becoming the standard for larger operators, putting pressure on single-service companies to expand or partner.
  • Geographic expansion: SFC now operates across 16 states plus Canada, with international expansion plans. Their systematic approach to brand integration shows they’re building scalable systems, not just “collecting companies.”
