A new tool for Drywood Termites: How bistrifluron blocks exoskeleton formation

Localized, or spot, treatments for drywood termites (Incisitermes minor) have become an increasingly popular alternative to whole-structure fumigation. One promising new tool in this approach is the use of chitin synthesis inhibitors (CSIs).

A recent study from the University of California, Riverside, examined the efficacy of bistrifluron, a CSI that disrupts the molting process in termites by inhibiting the formation of chitin, a key component of their exoskeletons.

Image: Termite Alates

How it works

The research team used western drywood termite colonies to test the chemical. For the study, bistrifluron was dissolved in acetone and applied to small blocks of dried Douglas fir sapwood. These treated blocks were then offered to laboratory-reared colonies.

Because bistrifluron is a slow-acting, non-repellent chemical, the termites readily fed on the treated wood and shared it with their nestmates through trophallaxis (the social sharing of food). As the termites attempted to molt, the chemical took effect, preventing the formation of a new exoskeleton and ultimately leading to their death.

Image: Termite Frass

The study’s findings

The results of the study were significant. Colonies that were fed wood treated with bistrifluron at a concentration of 1,000 parts per million (ppm) were completely eliminated in approximately two months. Lower concentrations also showed efficacy, though over a longer period.

The slow-acting nature of the chemical is a key advantage. It ensures that the active ingredient is spread throughout the entire colony, including to the queen and soldiers who may not feed directly on the treated wood. This comprehensive distribution is crucial for achieving total colony collapse.

The future of application

While the study proves the chemical’s efficacy, the next step is to develop a practical method for applying it in the field. The researchers suggest that formulating bistrifluron into a dust or liquid that can be injected directly into termite galleries could be an effective delivery method.

This research represents a promising advancement in localized drywood termite control, offering pest management professionals a potential new tool that is both effective and targeted.

UGA study finds bats can be their own glow sticks

Big brown bats are among the six species found to glow under UV light. PHOTO: BOB HILSCHER/ISTOCK / GETTY IMAGES PLUS/GETTY IMAGES

Every pest management professional (PMP) has, or should have, an ultraviolet (UV) light function on their flashlight for detecting rodent urine and various fungi in the field. However, a surprising new study from the University of Georgia’s (UGA’s) Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources suggests that PMPs can also detect bats this way.

Researchers have confirmed that at least six species of North American bat exhibit photoluminescence, meaning they glow green when exposed to UV light. The green light is emitted specifically from the bats’ wings and hind limbs. Lead author and UGA graduate student Briana Roberson noted that the characteristics found in these species differ from other nocturnal mammals that glow, suggesting a unique biological mechanism at work. To conduct the study, the team examined both male and female adult specimens of the following species:

  • big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus)
  • eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis)
  • Seminole bats (L. seminolus)
  • southeastern myotis (Myotis austroriparius)
  • gray bats (M. grisescens)
  • Brazilian free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis)

The specimens came from the mammal collections of the Georgia Museum of Natural History in Athens, Ga. Per the study, “most specimens were collected in Georgia, USA, but collection localities ranged geographically across the United States, including South Carolina, Tennessee, Illinois, and California. Specimens ranged from 22 to 103 years since collection.”

The green color and its specific location on the body suggest that this trait is likely genetic or inherited, rather than a temporary effect caused by something in the environment the bats ingest or touch. As co-author Dr. Steven Castleberry explained in a news release, this phenomenon is “ultimately some sort of mutation” that gets perpetuated because it is somehow beneficial.

Now that the glow is confirmed, the next question to answer is why. It does not appear to be for camouflage, mating or sex or species recognition, because the color is consistent across both male and female specimens. The current hypothesis suggests the glow may be an inherited trait used for communication, or possibly an “artifact” from an evolutionary purpose that no longer exists.

Skyhawk Trapmate: New Trapmate Enterprise Features

Screenshot of Trapmate Enterprise new features
IMAGE: SKYHAWK TRAPMATE

Pest management professionals (PMPs) are being asked to deliver heightened transparency, more accurate reporting and faster corrective action — all while managing increasingly complex facilities. Trapmate continues to evolve to meet those demands, delivering intelligent software advancements that streamline workflows and elevate the service experience for both technicians and their customers.

The latest upgrade to Trapmate Enterprise introduces two major features: Interactive Floor Plans and Service Mode. Together, these enhancements allow pest control teams to operate with a higher level of service, greater accuracy, clarity and confidence.

Interactive Floor Plans: Precision Placement Meets Visual Intelligence

Deploying remote monitoring technology requires a deep understanding of placement, spacing, and coverage. Until now, identifying where devices were located — and how they performed in relation to their surroundings — often required toggling among lists, notes or static documentation. Interactive Floor Plans completely transform that process.

Users can now upload a locations layout directly into the software and place each Trapmate device in its precise deployed location. This generates an accurate, graphical representation of the environment, allowing technicians and managers to see operational status in a real-world, visual format.

Key benefits include:

  • Color-coded status visualization. Devices clearly display their current state using recognizable traffic-light indicators: red — active capture requiring attention; yellow — service needed (battery replacement, etc.); and green — fully operational.
  • Clearer activity insights. Teams can quickly identify zones where pest activity is more prominent, improving corrective action and trend analysis.
  • Higher deployment accuracy. Visual placement ensures full coverage and simplifies compliance alignment for high-stakes environments such as food producers and handlers, pharmaceutical research and manufacturing, distribution centers and warehousing.
  • Faster on-site navigation for technicians. No more guessing which station corresponds to which alert; everything is visible and mapped.

Interactive Floor Plans ultimately allow pest control teams to maximize efficiency by leveraging location-based data to drive informed decisions.

Service Mode: Maintenance Without the Noise

Service Mode is a major advancement in simplifying device maintenance without disrupting monitoring integrity. While active, sensors continue to detect and record captures in the background — they just won’t trigger notifications until service mode ends. If any captures occur during the maintenance window, technicians are notified the moment the mode is turned off. This eliminates the historical issue where routine service activities generated false alerts and cluttered reporting with noise that required manual cleanup.

With Service Mode, Trapmate has engineered a smarter workflow.

With a single push of a button, technicians can temporarily silence alerts for an entire deployment while maintenance is being performed. All devices enter a designated “service mode state,” preventing unnecessary notifications from being sent to managers or customers.

Operational advantages include:

  • Site-wide control in seconds. Suspend alerts across every device at a location — without toggling settings one by one.
  • Real-time countdown tracking. A visible timer shows how long Service Mode remains active, helping technicians manage headspace and workflow. The mode can be easily extended if needed.
  • Zero reporting interference. Alerts triggered during service do not appear in performance data, ensuring clean, accurate history.
  • Faster execution and fewer manual steps. Technicians focus on service, not software.

Once the service session is complete, notifications automatically return to their previous state with no reconfiguration required.

These updates support what remote monitoring was always meant to deliver: efficiency, accuracy and elevated service for your customers.

Together, Interactive Floor Plans and Service Mode empower PMPs to:

  • Reduce on-site search and investigation time
  • Strengthen communication and transparency with customers
  • Improve reliability and data quality across every account
  • Minimize friction in technician workflow
  • Scale digital pest control confidently

Trapmate remains committed to developing technology that works the way professionals work. With these enhancements, managing digital pest control deployments becomes more intuitive, more visual and more operationally powerful than ever.

Why spiders are allies in pest prevention

Photo: Damián Hagopián
The newly identified jumping spider, Guriurius minuano. Photo: Damián Hagopián

The arthropod order Araneae, or spiders, are often seen as pests that lurk in dark spaces in basements or craft webs in an entryway. But the benefits of these eight-legged friends outweigh the cons. At this time of year, when these arachnids are used as decorations and scare tactics for Halloween, there are key facts pest management professionals (PMPs) need to know for a comprehensive approach to spider management.

Potentially harmful spiders

A common misconception about spiders is that some species have venom, while others do not. Mythbusting time: All spiders have venom; the difference lies in the ability of their fangs to inject venom into humans. For many species, the fangs are too small to pierce human skin. The following spider species are most likely to interact with humans and potentially deliver that venom in the United States:

  1. Northern black widow (Latrodectus variolus): Easily identified by the distinctive hourglass on the ventral abdomen, this spider has the most significant concentration of venom with effects impacting the central nervous system of humans. They are most commonly found outdoors in bushes, underneath fallen leaves or twigs, or in other dark spaces like exterior rodent stations.
  2. Brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa): Mostly found in the Midwest, the venom of the brown recluse can cause necrosis of human skin following a bite. While the bite can be medically dangerous, this species has few interactions with humans due to their reclusive nature. They are most easily identified by the violin shape on their dorsal cephalothorax.
  3. Yellow sac spider (Cheiracanthium spp.): These small, pale, yellowish spiders have a mildly harmful bite that will cause redness and swelling. Found indoors, like most spiders that bite humans, these spiders often react only when trapped against the skin.
  4. Wolf spiders (family Lycosidae): Mostly found outdoors in fields, these ground-hunting spiders use venom to subdue prey. Bites to humans can cause some mild swelling, with minimal likelihood of significant wound damage.

Why spiders are considered helpful ‘pests’

While seeing a spider in the home or office can be jarring to our clients, it’s important to educate consumers that spiders are performing free and natural pest management. All spiders prey on arthropods, which can include flies, wasps, beetles and moths. The presence of spiders in a space reduces the amount of these pests, along with the need for materials to treat said pests.

More spiders reside in the dark corners of many structures, whether it’s an office building or a residential home. Generally, spiders are reclusive and nocturnal, with a preference to hunt prey at night and to be in a protected area during the day.

Key points to share with customers to educate them on the benefits of spiders include:

  1. Natural pest management: Spiders prey on insects, assisting with managing the number of pests that invade homes and urban structures, along with reducing the need for excess chemical pesticides.
  2. Support biodiversity and food webs: Spiders are not only predators, but prey to birds, reptiles and other animals.
  3. Bio-indicators of ecosystem health: The presence of spiders can signify a balanced ecosystem, as they are sensitive to environmental changes. Too few can cause insect populations to bloom.

Why spiders are drawn to a structure

For those who don’t want spiders in their spaces, there are key factors that draw them to a structure. Before looking at ways to eradicate the spiders from a space, first look at these key environmental features that can easily reduce the amount present on a property.

  1. Lighting: The most common trigger for a large spider population is the type of lighting present. White incandescent light with blue wavelengths attracts moths, flies and other arthropods that spiders prey on, therefore attracting the predators themselves.
    • The fix: Switch to yellow bulbs that have a lower likelihood of attracting spider’s prey, as most flying insects do not perceive yellow wavelengths of light. For additional prevention, angle outdoor lights away from doors and shade windows at night to reduce insect (and, therefore, spider) attraction.
  2. Proximity to a water source: Water sources can often lead to higher numbers of aquatic emerging insect pests like mosquitoes, mayflies and midges, all of which are prey for most spiders.
    • The fix: Reducing water sources near office or residential locations will reduce the number of pests and the number of spiders attracted to them.
  3. Landscaping: The more landscaping near a home or office, the more arthropod pests and spiders will be found.
    • The fix: To reduce this, lay a perimeter of pea-sized gravel, ideally 3 inches deep and 3 feet wide, to act as a barrier around exterior perimeters.

Because most spiders and their webs are beneficial for controlling other pests, educating customers to their benefit can actually assist you with doing pest management around their homes and businesses.

About Kness Pest Defense

Per company history, the Ketch-All was invented by a young, widowed father of six, Austin Enos “Brick” Kness, in 1924. Mice were prevalent at the high school in which Kness was a custodian, “and led him to the idea of the ‘box’ trap. He built the first trap from a square oilcan, a Tuxedo Tobacco can, a spring from a curtain rod, and the wood base of a crate. The first night he set his trap, he captured five mice.

“He was elated and showed the teachers and his friends. He was encouraged to build others for his friends and to seek a patent. By 1927, Kness Mfg. Co. was formed to produce the KetchAll Automatic Mousetrap and another of Kness’ inventions, the RotoBow tree saw.”

Brick Kness was inducted into the Pest Management Professional Hall of Fame in 2024.

Callback Cures: How to Use ‘Spooky Safety Month’ to Reinforce Your Protocols

Dr. Michael Bentley, BCE
Dr. Michael Bentley, BCE

Leaves have started to turn and the smell of pumpkin spice lattes fills the air. That means Halloween is right around the corner.

The thought of ghosts and goblins filling the night isn’t the only scary thing about October. Your outdated safety protocols could be the real monster lurking in the shadows. As temperatures start to drop and pest activity declines for some, October is an ideal time to review, reset and reinforce policies and protocols that keep your team safe all year long.

Key Takeaways:

  • Time Your Review: October is the perfect month to conduct a comprehensive, annual review of all your safety plans, procedures and equipment.
  • Outdated is Dangerous: Regulations and equipment evolve. If your safety protocols haven’t been reviewed in the past 12 months, they may be out of compliance and exposing your team to risk.
  • Training is Not Optional: An updated plan is useless if the team isn’t trained on it. Training on new information and processes is just as critical as the plan itself.

The Risks of Outdated Protocols

From the tools you use to the services you provide, nearly every aspect of pest control work involves exposure to potential hazards. Ensuring you have an updated and modernized safety plan is critical to minimizing risk.

If your safety protocols haven’t been reviewed in the past 12 months, they may be more trick than treat. Regulations change and safety equipment evolves. Neglecting your program can expose your business to legal and financial risks as well. A single incident can trigger audits, fines and even damage your company’s reputation.

Training is as Critical as the Plan

Maintaining an updated safety program is critical. But the success of your new program is only guaranteed if your team is properly trained on the new information.

Are your technicians well-versed in the latest personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements? Do your emergency response plans reflect the most current team roles and contact info? Establishing a training plan that in-body outlines new processes and procedures is just as important to the success of your safety program as the written document.

Make it an Annual Event

Proactively reviewing and revising your protocols shows your commitment to your team’s safety and well-being while also avoiding legal and financial pitfalls.

To solidify your company’s commitment, consider making October your official “Spooky Safety Month. Update signage, host a themed training session (with bonus points for costumes) to review new information and invite feedback from the team.

While safety should be a topic of focus every month, scheduling an annual program review every October ensures your protocols are never outdated.

BASF: Selontra Rodent Bait Savings

BASF Selontra beauty shot

“Enough is enough”: With its fast colony kill and impressive labor savings, Selontra Rodent Bait delivers all-around efficiency for your business. The stop-feed action of its active ingredient, cholecalciferol, means rodents only consume enough bait for a lethal dose, leaving more bait for other rodents. It also means technicians spend less time refilling bait boxes. Selontra even provides effective control against anticoagulant-resistant rodents.

Depending on the size of the infestation and the surrounding environment, you can count on controlling a rodent infestation in as few as seven days when using Selontra (U.S. Field Trials: Indiana Grain Farm, 2017; NC Pig Farm, 2016). Now through Dec. 15, 2025, qualified end users can capture significant savings when purchasing Selontra Rodent Bait by the half pallet or by the pallet. Contact your distributor or BASF rep for details.

Microshare: EverSmart Pest

Microshare, makers of the trademarked EverSmart line of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven remote monitoring software, has unveiled an expanded product that monitors and provides field camera images of rodent, flying insect, cockroach, beetle and bed bug activity for the pest control industry. The company is debuting the product at the National Pest Management Association’s PestWorld 2025 in Orlando, Fla., this week.

Building on the success of the EverSmart Rodent remote monitoring product in North America and Europe, Microshare has integrated video, still images and sensor data into its platform to record activity around the traps already used by the industry. In keeping with Microshare’s business-first design approach, all these new capabilities are retrofit-ready, meaning they can be married to the market’s most popular trap, light trap and bait station inventory for all these species, avoiding the expense of replacing existing inventory.

In partnership with Tokyo, Japan-based Ryoden Corp., a major Japanese technology trading company, Microshare has integrated the company’s AI image and video parsing technology into existing EverSmart capabilities, including the ability to ingest and display output from Tactacam devices and other field cameras. Microshare and Tactacam announced an integration partnership earlier this month.

EverSmart Pest provides a centralized platform for organizing and assessing data from a range of pest control efforts that were previously unrelated, requiring technicians to manage multiple apps, scroll through hours of video or images or simply perform manual checks on customer sites where no activity at all may have taken place.

“Not only will all these inputs be filtered and bundled into incidents by the Microshare Platform, but now there is a way to understand exactly what needs to be done across an array of species before the technician’s day begins,” Microshare CEO and Co-Founder Ron Rock, who is leading his team’s efforts at PestWorld 2025, said in a news release. “What do technicians do with all that extra time? They diagnose, they perform value-added services, and above all, they produce new revenue while providing their customers with better outcomes.”

Microshare and Ryoden plan to market EverSmart Pest globally, with Philadelphia, Pa.-based Microshare taking the lead in North America and Europe, and Ryoden spearheading Asia/Pacific, where the company has a decades-old reputation for innovation and reliability.

CSI promotes Pass to head of sales

Sam Pass, CSI
Sam Pass

Control Solutions Inc. (CSI), a Pasadena, Texas-based specialty chemical manufacturer, has appointed industry veteran Sam Pass as its head of sales. In his new role, Pass will oversee sales for the company’s five business units: CSI-Pest, Quali-Pro, Production Animal, Martin’s and Industrial Sales.

“I am fortunate to inherit a strong sales management team. We have five talented and long-tenured business directors that I am excited to work alongside,” Pass, a second-generation pest management professional (PMP), noted in the news release.

Since joining CSI in January 2022, Pass has made a significant impact across multiple business areas. Initially leading the marketing team, he later took on the challenge of heading the Professional Pest Control (PCO) team, driving growth and alignment in both roles. During his tenure, Pass also earned his master’s in business administration (MBA) degree from Carnegie Mellon University, further enhancing his leadership and strategic expertise.

Before joining CSI, Pass served as the pest control and nursery greenhouse market manager for FMC Corp. in Philadelphia, Pa. Among his notable achievements, he successfully led the 2019 launch of a new insecticide product, resulting in strong market adoption and measurable financial success.

Pass’ career in the pest management industry began long before his corporate leadership roles. A graduate of the University of Florida with a bachelor of science degree in entomology and nematology, he spent more than five years as a technician at his family’s company, Action Pest Control in Evansville, Ind.

“Sam’s leadership, strategic vision, and deep understanding of both our markets and our customers make him the perfect choice to lead CSI’s sales organization,” Trey Kendrick, head of Commercial Unit, APS and general manager, CSI said in the release. “We’re excited to see his continued impact as we expand our presence across all business units.”

About Control Solutions Inc.

Control Solutions Inc. (CSI) is a hybrid manufacturer featuring a broad spectrum of post-patent and innovative products. CSI operates through four main divisions: CSI Pest, Quali-Pro, CSI Production Animal and Martin’s, each focusing on different aspects of pest control, turf and ornamental, animal health, and consumer products.
CSI leverages its position as a subsidiary of the ADAMA Group, one of the world’s largest agricultural chemical companies, to access a wide range of active ingredients and offer an extensive product portfolio.

The company can actually trace its roots to 1958, when former president and CEO Mark Boyd’s father, Richard, purchased a small pest control company in Pasadena and founded Ford’s Pest Control. By 1960, Richard Boyd launched Ford’s Chemical to formulate and sell pest control solutions to colleagues and the public. In 1976, he merged the two businesses into Ford’s Chemical and Service.
