Photo Finish: PMPs rally for community causes

It never ceases to amaze the Pest Management Professional staff how readers across the country prove that their dedication to their communities is as strong as their technical expertise. Here is just a sampling of how pest management professionals (PMPs) stepped up to make a difference in 2025.

Helping with hope: Thomas Pest Services

Thomas Pest Services

In March, Thomas Pest Services launched a community fundraising campaign for Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month. The Schenectady, N.Y.-based company matched $1,500 in donations from customers and partners for a total contribution of $3,000 to Jake’s Help From Heaven, a local non-profit supporting individuals with complex medical needs. Then, in September, co-founders Bill Clark and Sarah Thomas-Clark partnered with local businesses to support the second annual Backpack Giveaway, providing 100 stocked backpacks for local students and an additional 20 for local school districts to ensure all students were prepared for the academic year.

Supporting our Veterans: Rose Pest Solutions

As part of an ongoing commitment to U.S. Veterans, employees of Northfield, Ill.-based Rose Pest Solutions and its sister company, Franklin Pest Solutions, donated hundreds of clothing items this winter. The donations benefited Veterans served by the Hines VA Medical Center in Hines, Ill. Pictured from left are Dr. Stan Cope, technical director; Tom Snyder, Louisville branch manager; Dave Sloop, Michigan City branch manager; and Jorge Guerrero, safety coordinator.

The power of song: NC/SC PWIPM

The North Carolina and South Carolina Professional Women in Pest Management (PWIPM) chapters hosted the inaugural “Melodies that Matter: Pest Control Pop Star Edition FUNdraiser.” Held during the 2025 Carolinas/Mid-Atlantic Summer Conference in Savannah, Ga., in August, the event raised $6,937.65 in support of Safe House Project, a national nonprofit dedicated to ending child trafficking. The evening combined karaoke and philanthropy, allowing participants to donate for the chance to sing — or pay a fee to avoid taking the stage. Pictured from left are planning committee members Suzanne VanDerveer, Melanie Matthews, Maria Miller (North Carolina chair), Julie Tesh-Clark and Donna Gross (South Carolina chair). The committee also included Mary Elizabeth Fairfax and Laura Gergle.

10 times the generosity: Pest-End

IMAGE: PEST-END

Plaistow, N.H.-based Pest-End hosted its annual end-of-season event in October, drawing inspiration from the National Pest Management Association’s Academy format. Six color-coded teams competed in spirited challenges, including a community-focused task: donating items to local food pantries. While the initial goal was 150 items, the team’s generosity resulted in more than 1,500 items donated to help neighbors in need.

What it means to be a pest management expert

I recently shared a story in the January 2025 “Callback Cures” column regarding a life lesson I learned while working for the late University of Florida medical entomologist, Dr. Jerry Butler.

The field was Jerry’s favorite classroom, and every day with him was filled with teaching moments that have stayed with me throughout my career. Jerry was my mentor and my inspiration for pursuing entomology. Sadly, he passed away in November. To honor such an incredible entomologist, educator and friend, I’d like to share another foundational moment from that summer.

Key takeaways

  • Observation is the first step: Identifying the “unusual” is more important for an expert than having an immediate answer for every specimen.
  • The humility of expertise: True professionals are comfortable admitting when they don’t know something, using it as a catalyst for scientific investigation.
  • An evolving industry: As pest ranges expand and behaviors evolve, experts must remain ready to encounter and investigate the unknown daily.

The “mystery” mosquito

We were resetting insect collection traps at a local horse farm when a mosquito landed on my arm. It didn’t look like any of our usual suspects, so I asked Jerry to identify it.

To my surprise, he said he didn’t know.

This caught me off guard. Jerry was the preeminent expert; he was supposed to know everything. How could he not know? Still shocked by his admission, I collected the mystery mosquito so we could take a closer look back at the lab.

Western Treehole Mosquito (Aedes sierrensis) PHOTO COURTESY OF INATURALIST

Redefining the “expert”

On the drive back to the lab, curiosity got the best of me. I asked Jerry how often an expert entomologist came across something he couldn’t identify.

“Every day,” he said. “Being an expert doesn’t mean you have all the answers. There’s just too much out there to know everything. That’s what makes all this so fun. You don’t have to know everything to be an expert. You just need to be comfortable spotting the unusual and be ready to investigate. Your mosquito looked unusual, so we’ll have a closer look.”

I’ve since forgotten what that specific mosquito turned out to be. However, Jerry’s view on what it means to be an expert has remained a core tenet of my professional philosophy.

Investigation over rote knowledge

The challenges we face in the pest management industry are ever-changing. Pests expand their geographic range, behaviors evolve and new invasive species are introduced regularly. No matter how many years of experience you have, every day serves up an opportunity to encounter something new.

Being a pest management expert doesn’t mean you have to know it all — because you can’t. You simply need to be comfortable spotting something unusual and possess the technical discipline to investigate it.

Thank you, Jerry, for your eagerness to share a lifetime of knowledge. I am eternally grateful for our time together and for the chance to experience your passion for entomology firsthand.

Dr. Michael Bentley is VP of training and technical services for the National Pest Management Association. You can reach him at mbentley@pestworld.org.

How to keep clients prepared for winter pest encounters

PHOTO: LEONID IKAN/ISTOCK / GETTY IMAGES PLUS/GETTY IMAGES

As a major winter weather system sweeps across the Eastern and Southern U.S. this weekend, keep in mind that pests like rodents and cockroaches are known to seek shelter wherever available. A recent news release by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) warns of just that.

How common are pests in the winter?

Recent online surveys conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of NPMA reveal that 17 percent of Americans encountered rodents in their homes in 2025, and 21 percent have seen a cockroach. These statistics mean that winter encounters are likely to occur and are cause for concern.

“Rodents like mice and rats don’t hibernate. Many pests actively search for warm places to survive. Our homes often provide exactly what they need,” said Dr. Jim Fredericks, PMP contributor and senior vice president of public affairs at the NPMA. “These statistics tell us that winter pest problems are real and concerning. But with the right prevention strategies and professional help, these infestations are manageable.”

Rodents and cockroaches have the remarkable ability to squeeze themselves into the tiniest spaces, and as cold sweeps the nation, homeowners are likely to see them around more often. Once inside, they contaminate food, spread disease, trigger allergies and asthma and cause structural damage.

Advice to give your clients

To help clients pest-proof their homes and businesses this winter, NPMA recommends following these essential tips:

  • Seal entry points with steel wool and caulk
  • Install door sweeps and repair damaged weatherstripping
  • Fix leaky pipes and use dehumidifiers in basements
  • Declutter storage areas where pests can nest

Allergy Technologies hosts ATAHC Learning Symposium for PMPs

IMAGE: ALLERGY TECHNOLOGIES
IMAGE: ALLERGY TECHNOLOGIES

Allergy Technologies (AT) convened approximately 30 pest management professionals (PMPs) for its Jan. 6 ATAHC Learning Symposium, a hands-on educational seminar designed to share best management practices, field insights and updates related to the ATAHC Programs. The event was held near AT headquarters in Fort Washington, Pa. Attendees included existing ATAHC professional pest management partners.

The agenda focused on real-world application, emerging challenges and continuous improvement, ensuring that ATAHC subcontractors remain, as Allergy Technologies President Joseph Latino described it in a news release, “at the tip of the spear of knowledge and field applicability.”

While the symposium provided technical education and operational guidance, it served as a platform to reinforce what sets ATAHC apart from other pest management strategies, which reactively spot treat infestations rather than proactively address issues on a property-wide basis.

By replacing frequent callbacks and crisis-driven treatments with a structured, prevention-based model, PMPs benefit from fewer emergency visits, improved route efficiency, streamlined labor deployment and more predictable workloads.

In addition to operational efficiencies, ATAHC offers PMPs a differentiated service model that strengthens relationships with housing authorities and property managers. The program’s data-driven structure, standardized protocols and measurable outcomes help PMPs demonstrate value, reduce client discontent and secure longer-term partnerships in a sector that has historically been difficult to serve profitably.

While ATAHC’s results have been extraordinary, reducing bed bug reintroductions by greater than 98 percent, Allergy Technologies continues to seek ways to improve and fine-tune the program. “The Learning Symposium gathers together supervisors and technicians to discuss the programs, specifics of the programs and if there are ways to make them better,” says Charles Cerbini, Sr., executive vice president at Corbett Exterminating, and consultant to Allergy Technologies, added in a news release. “We want to hear what everybody has to say.”

Cerbini emphasized the importance of collaboration across companies and roles, noting that shared experiences from the field help refine and strengthen the program. “It’s always better to have everybody together because we feed off each other and give information to each other and see what’s worked in the field for this person, what’s worked in the field for this company and try to consolidate and make it better,” he said.

About the ATAHC

ATAHC (Affordable Housing Control and Prevention), is a comprehensive, property-wide platform developed by Allergy Technologies to address persistent pest challenges in affordable housing. Originally launched to combat bed bugs, the initial Program has since expanded into ATAHC Complete, a fully integrated model that addresses bed bugs alongside other structural public health nuisance pests such as cockroaches and rodents. The approach emphasizes early detection, long-acting preventive measures, collaboration with residents and property management and sustainable cost control.

EPIC: Professional Wild Hog Scram

EPIC Wild Hog Scram
IMAGE: EPIC

Feral hogs are one of the fastest-spreading invasive mammals in the United States. Populations are reported in at least 35 states and continuing to push into new territory. They’ve expanded from a few Southern states decades ago to a near-national presence, thanks to high reproductive rates, adaptable habitat use and human-assisted movements. Their numbers are estimated in the millions nationwide, and they’re causing serious ecological and economic damage while steadily moving into places where they were once rare or absent.

Wild hog facts

Wild hogs and feral pigs reproduce rapidly and adapt to diverse landscapes. Every type of range, woodland and grassland supports — and can be invaded by — wild hogs. Once a reproducing team (or passel) of wild pigs is attracted to a tract of land, their numbers will increase rapidly with a coinciding level of increased damage.

Landscape damage caused by wild hogs is brutal! Wild pigs are opportunistic omnivores that use their snouts to root for a diverse diet of plants (roots, mast, crops, grasses) and animals (insects, worms, eggs, small vertebrates, carrion), consuming up to 5 percent of their body weight daily.

The diet of wild hogs shifts seasonally based on available food. Their need for high-protein sources, like acorns and agricultural crops, leads them everywhere and anywhere, including manicured landscapes. They feed heavily at dawn and dusk, using their excellent sense of smell to “root” food both above and below ground. Afterward, a surface where wild hogs have fed looks as though it has been clumsily and deeply furrowed.

  • Wild hogs cause significant property damage.
  • Wild hogs root and wallow through soil, causing soil erosion.
  • Wild hogs contaminate water resources with their feces.
  • Wild hogs are a threat to human safety.

Wild hog facts

Enviro Protection Industries Co. (EPIC) presents Wild Hog Scram, an animal repellent designed to effectively prevent and train wild hogs and feral pigs from entering landscapes, yards, campuses, golf courses and more. The natural granular formula is a long-lasting repellent that scares feral swine to death. Wild Hog Scram is designed to be risk-free for humans, pets and the environment, while keeping wild hogs from entering treated areas and trains them to stay away. One 10-pound bag protects up to 12,100 square feet.

Navigating in-vehicle phone use: Balancing safety and technology

I’ve just finished a meeting with the ABC Home & Commercial Services of Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) Safety Council, where we reviewed footage from an in-vehicle camera. The employee in question was flagged for looking at their phone, which was in a holder, while driving to follow directions to their destination.

In these formal meetings, we discuss each incident to decide whether to dismiss it as minor or to have the person’s manager discuss it with them and possibly take disciplinary action. We vowed long ago that at our company, bad drivers cannot have a job that involves getting behind the wheel.

Key takeaways

  • Zero tolerance for bad driving: ABC Home & Commercial Services maintains a strict policy that being a safe driver is a prerequisite for employment.
  • Technology is a double-edged sword: While modern GPS is safer than old-school paper maps, it still requires visual attention that can cross the line into distracted driving.
  • The “trusted advisor” standard: Safety isn’t just about compliance; it’s about a moral obligation to ensure every team member returns home to their family.
  • Proactive review: Using in-vehicle cameras allows for lively, formal reviews to determine if driver behavior is genuinely dangerous or a necessary part of navigation.

How technology has evolved

I very much remember the early days of beginning my business in the DFW Metroplex. In those days, the maps were literally spiral books with each page being divided into smaller squares. You might have to navigate from page 32, square M, to a totally different page — sometimes even switching between Dallas and Fort Worth atlases while driving.

In today’s world, you can put the destination into your phone or vehicle’s map system and follow those directions turn-by-turn. Still, it’s not a perfect system, as you regularly need to look at the screen to make sure you do not miss an exit or turn.

Currently, we are using driver safety review meetings to decide whether the actions shown on camera crossed the line into dangerous behavior. Each time, it is a judgment call, one that not everyone immediately agrees on.

The best practices for navigation

In my vehicle, I have a large screen on the dashboard that mirrors my phone. This does a great job of making sure I do not need to touch my phone while driving. If I have the sound turned up, it will even give turn-by-turn directions audibly.

However, even this technology cannot eliminate the need to look at the screen. My personal protocol is as follows:

  1. Look after every turn to see when the next turn is coming.
  2. Count landmarks like stop signs, traffic lights and intersections.
  3. Focus on the road, using the screen only for quick confirmation so eyes remain off the device as much as possible.

Unfortunately, not many vehicles in our fleet currently have those larger screens and mirroring capabilities, though I hope they do in time.

A matter of life and death

Beyond navigation, phones should not be used in our vehicles while the vehicle is in motion. Texting while driving is rampant today and it is a horrible habit that is hard to break. Having cameras in our company vehicles that face forward and backward, combined with a well-written and enforceable policy, helps significantly.

I have said this for many years during my “driving speech” with each driver before they are issued a vehicle:

“The last thing I ever want to do is to be sitting at a funeral with a grieving spouse and say, ‘I knew they were a bad driver, but we just needed them to get their job done, so we didn’t do anything about their driving behavior.’”

Being in the pest control industry is not just about taking care of customers; it is also about taking care of the people we work with — and their families. A large part of that is keeping your eyes solely on the road and driving safely.

Truly Nolen promotes 2 management positions

Truly Nolen recently announced the promotion of two leadership positions for its Florida and Arizona service offices.

Florida lawn and insulation division manager

John Abruzzo

Truly Nolen Pest Control recently announced the promotion of John D’Abruzzo to Florida lawn and insulation division manager. D’Abruzzo will remain based out of the company’s Pompano Beach service office.

D’Abruzzo first joined the company in May 2010 and has held multiple positions, including his most recent role as Area Manager for Broward/Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast. Prior to joining Truly Nolen, he spent 26 years in the food operations industry with companies such as Nabisco and Bay Valley Foods.

He recently earned his Associate in Certified Entomology (ACE) designation and has frequently answered questions for media outlets regarding everything from insects and rodents to lawns and insulation.

“I am most excited about the opportunity of helping to grow the revenue in both of these departments, while facilitating a ‘Yellow Standard’ experience for our customers and expanding the knowledge of our partners,” said D’Abruzzo, in a news release. “My favorite thing about working for Truly Nolen is being able to determine the trajectory of your career and having the support of the company to help you succeed in whatever professional goals that you may have.”

“John has been with Truly Nolen for 15 years and brings a proven track record of operational excellence, strong sales leadership and deep industry expertise. His attainment of his ACE certification, combined with his hands-on operations experience and ability to drive results, makes him an excellent fit for this role,” said Lee Blair, Florida regional manager, Truly Nolen. “I look forward to seeing his continued success in this expanded role and I am glad he is a member of our team.”

National contract and asset manager

James Adams

Truly Nolen also announced the promotion of James Adams to national contract and asset manager. He will remain based at the company’s Chandler, Ariz., service office.

Adams joined Truly Nolen in May 2011 and has held multiple positions within the company. In February 2022, he became the Area Manager overseeing Phoenix, Prescott and Flagstaff. Before joining Truly Nolen, Adams worked in management for Sony as part of a 14-year tenure in retail management with most of his time spent working for Hollywood Video as a store manager, district manager and regional manager. He attended the University of Arizona, where he studied Biology.

Some of Adams’ new responsibilities will include overseeing property and lease management, fleet oversight, customer contract review and customer damage claims.

“I am excited about working closer with our business partners, national vendors and internal team members to ensure those relationships are healthy, productive and mutually beneficial. I am also looking forward to continue working on and implementing efficient processes that protect the organization and give our leadership team peace of mind as we grow,” Adams added in a news release. “My favorite thing about Truly Nolen is the perfect combination of scale and culture. The corporate structure gives us the framework to be efficient and compliant, but the family-owned roots mean we treat people like individuals rather than numbers.”

“James has been the quintessential team player for nearly 15 years, and his work ethic, knowledge of the industry and ability to connect with customers as well as team members is second to none,” said Mark Ringlstetter, VP loss control, safety, insurance, fleet and technical services. “I look forward to his continued growth, leadership and development as he steps into this exciting new role.”

In the field, the pro’s edge comes from equipment that works the same way every time — no surprises, no shortcuts, no wasted effort.

Kness Stick-All traps are engineered for consistent, dependable performance across real-world conditions. The industrial-grade adhesive is designed to hold strong over time, helping maintain effectiveness from placement to service check, even in demanding environments.

Built for professional use, Stick-All traps offer versatility for monitoring and control of rodents and insects in residential, commercial and industrial accounts. Their low-profile design allows for discreet placement in tight or high-traffic areas, while durable construction helps reduce replacements and callbacks.

When your tools perform predictably, your routes stay efficient—and your results stay professional. That’s the pro’s edge: smarter equipment that takes pressure off the job without sacrificing performance.

About Kness Pest Defense

Per company history, the Ketch-All was invented by a young, widowed father of six, Austin Enos “Brick” Kness, in 1924. Mice were prevalent at the high school in which Kness was a custodian, “and led him to the idea of the ‘box’ trap. He built the first trap from a square oilcan, a Tuxedo Tobacco can, a spring from a curtain rod, and the wood base of a crate. The first night he set his trap, he captured five mice.

“He was elated and showed the teachers and his friends. He was encouraged to build others for his friends and to seek a patent. By 1927, Kness Mfg. Co. was formed to produce the KetchAll Automatic Mousetrap and another of Kness’ inventions, the RotoBow tree saw.”

Brick Kness was inducted into the Pest Management Professional Hall of Fame in 2024.

Massey Services sponsors Orlando Economic Partnership’s Public Leadership Institute

Logo: Massey Services

The Orlando Economic Partnership (OEP) recently announced Massey Services, Inc. as the new lead sponsor and supporter of the Partnership’s Public Leadership Institute (PLI), a nonpartisan leadership development program designed to cultivate the next generation of civic, business and nonprofit leaders shaping Central Florida’s future. This announcement coincides with the graduation of a cohort of leaders from the program.

Starting in October 2025, 44 leaders have completed the current program and are equipped with the knowledge, relationships and regional perspective needed to engage effectively in public policy, community development and collaborative problem-solving. Through immersive learning and direct engagement with policymakers and subject-matter experts, participants gain a deeper understanding of how local decisions impact economic growth, workforce development, housing, transportation and quality of life.

“We are proud to partner with the Orlando Economic Partnership and their Public Leadership Institute, which will help build strong leadership for the future of our city,” said Tony Massey, President and CEO of Massey Services, in a release. “Orlando is projected to continue to experience significant growth and we need to have exceptional leaders with forward-thinking vision who are able to guide thoughtful, data-driven decisions for our community.”

The program includes two distinct tracks:

  • Political Leadership Track – Designed for aspiring elected leaders who are exploring candidacy for public office within the next five years.
  • Civic Leadership Track – A new pathway for leaders who want to influence public policy as advocates, board members, or community connectors without pursuing office.

Together, the two tracks create a pipeline of informed, connected leaders prepared to collaborate across industries and jurisdictions, a critical need as the Orlando region continues to grow rapidly. No commitment is required to run for office; rather, the non-partisan program is designed for individuals who are actively exploring opportunities.

“Developing strong, informed and collaborative leaders is essential to delivering on Orlando’s long-term success,” said Tim Giuliani, president and CEO of the Orlando Economic Partnership, in a news release. “The Public Leadership Institute is a cornerstone of our efforts to build civic alignment and equip leaders with the tools to address complex regional challenges. We are grateful to Massey Services for stepping forward as lead sponsor and investing in the leadership capacity that will help drive Orlando’s future.”

Support from Massey Services advances OEP’s broader Orlando Vision 2045, the region’s long-term framework focused on achieving status as a top 10 innovation hub, building a region of 15-minute cities through smart transportation investment and strengthening downtown as one of the best in the nation. Leadership development is a foundational pillar of that vision, enabling sustained collaboration across public, private and nonprofit sectors.

“Our company has been headquartered in Orlando since 1985, and my father, Harvey L. Massey, understood that great cities are built when businesses support the communities they serve,” added Massey. “Our family continues to give back to the Orlando community and in 2014, we created the Harvey and Carol Massey Foundation to help further our mission of community service. It’s important for all of us to create lasting economic and community benefits that will serve our region for future generations.”

Participants in PLI represent a diverse cross-section of the region, including business professionals, nonprofit leaders, educators and public servants. Alumni of the program continue to serve on boards, commissions and community organizations, strengthening civic engagement and regional problem-solving capacity.

About the Public Leadership Institute

The Public Leadership Institute is a unique leadership training initiative through the Orlando Economic Partnership that prepares Central Florida’s business-minded leaders to serve as future public leaders or policy influencers. Participants create powerful connections and draw on their real-world experience, skills and talent to impact and promote policies for regional prosperity.
