Liphatech: Flatline Soft Bait Pails

Flatline Soft Bait is now available in an expanded package size in both the U.S. and Canada, offering pest management professionals (PMPs) more convenience and flexibility when choosing the product. Flatline, from “The Soft Bait Innovators” at Liphatech Inc., is the first and only chlorophacinone soft bait rodenticide for the professional market, the company says.

In addition to the existing Flatline offering – 4-pound individual bags of 28-gram pouches and eight 4-pound bag cases – the product is now available for purchase in 16-pound pails in the U.S. and 7-kilogram pails in Canada.

Flatline is a palatable, multiple-feed soft bait made to effectively kill rats and mice. It is specifically labeled for Norway rats, roof rats, house mice, deer mice and white-footed mice. Flatline maintains its integrity in hot environments, and is a good option for outdoor or indoor use in light to heavy rodent conditions.

“The larger pail size provides another option for PMPs who use Flatline. Since Flatline is a first-generation anticoagulant rodenticide, it’s also a good option for getting ahead of rodent infestations where the use of second-generation rodenticides is restricted,” said Matt Titshaw, pest management business manager at Liphatech.

Flatline Soft Bait is easy to use and packaged in a conveniently sized 28-gram soft bait pouch, which can be quickly secured with bait rods or feeding devices such as SoftSecure Technology (SST). Flatline is formulated to reduce debris and service time for PMPs. Vitamin K₁ is the antidote for Flatline.

Flatline, along with other Liphatech products, is available in the U.S. and Canada from authorized distributors to PMPs in structural pest control.

Industry up 12 percent in April, per Blair/PCO M&A Specialists index

Logo: PCO Bookkeepers & M&A SpecialistsThe William Blair/PCO M&A Specialists Pest Index is a proprietary compilation of the monthly sales for 158 different U.S. pest control companies across 36 states. The total U.S. William Blair/PCO Bookkeepers & M&A Specialists Pest Index increased 12 percent year-over-year in April 2024, up from 8 percent growth in March. The long-term historical growth rate of the total pest index is 11 percent.

“The pest index rebounded in April,” William Blair Equity Researcher Tim Mulrooney said in a news release. “The residential and commercial pest indices accelerated slightly during the month, but most of the outperformance was driven by the smaller indices, including termite, bed bug and mosquito — all of which rebounded materially in April. Much of this acceleration was driven by the termite index, which increased 10 percent year-over-year in April, up from flat year-over-year performance in March. Although March was weaker than expected, the data suggests that termite-related service revenue caught up in April.”

Dan Gordon, CPA, who is Pest Management Professional’s financial columnist as well as a partner in PCO Bookkeepers & M&A Specialists, added, “The index seems to have snapped back for April with a strong beginning to termite season. March appears to have been an anomaly, most likely created by bad weather.”

The April results by segment include:

  • The Residential Pest Index increased 12 percent year-over-year.
  • The Commercial Pest Index increased 13 percent year-over-year.
  • The Termite Index increased 10 percent year-over-year.
  • The Bed Bug Index increased 10 percent year-over-year.
  • The Mosquito Index increased 27 percent year-over-year.

About the William Blair/PCO M&A Specialists Pest Index

The William Blair/PCO M&A Specialists Pest Index tracks the monthly performance of 158 privately held pest control companies across 36 states with combined annual 2023 revenue of $521
million. The purpose of the report is to track the monthly performance of several different U.S. pest markets. It does not include residential door-to-door companies.

Western drywoods love pinene scent, study says

Scientists from the University of California Riverside (UCR) have discovered a highly effective, nontoxic and inexpensive way to lure hungry termites to their doom.

The method, detailed in the Journal of Economic Entomology, uses pinene, which an article from UCR describes as “a pleasant-smelling chemical” released by forest trees that reminds western drywood termites (Incisitermes minor) of their food. For this study, the affected termites followed the scent to a spot of insecticide injected into wood.

“We saw significant differences in the death rates using insecticide alone versus the insecticide plus pinene,” UCR entomologist Dr. Dong-Hwan Choe, who led the discovery, said in the news release. “Without pinene, we got about 70 percent mortality. When we added it in, it was over 95 percent.”

Native to North America, these termites are “recyclers,” Dr. Choe explained, because they are drawn to dead wood above ground, and consume it with the help of microorganisms in their guts.

That said, the insects are unable to distinguish between dead trees and the wood used to build homes. They are commonly found in both California and Florida, as well as parts of Canada and Mexico. “It’s only a matter of time before termites attack a house, especially in warmer parts of the states,” Dr. Choe said of the distribution areas.

Tent fumigation and localized insecticide injections are currently the Top 2 approaches to controlling drywoods, both of which can be time- and labor-intensive for pest control companies. The pinene discovery might aid in zeroing in on the affected areas only — with fewer resources and in less time than before.

“Even at low concentrations, pinene is good at attracting termites from a distance,” Dr. Choe said in the news release. He said it’s not functioning like a pheromone, which might appeal to the mating desires of the insect. Rather, think of how the smell wafting from a Cinnebon might entice you to immediately walk over and order a cinnamon roll. (That’s no accident, by the way.)

How this new information will be used in new termite control approaches remains to be seen, but Dr. Choe said the end goal is to “use fewer chemicals without compromising efficiency.”

Why recognition is a win-win for everyone

Recognition seems simple enough: “Great job on your work!” However, effective recognition is more than that. It’s what my father, Truly David Nolen, worked to build — a culture of recognition that was deeply ingrained within our company.

In fact, we saw how much this has become a part of our cultural fabric recently during our annual President’s Club cruise, where our top-performing team members were honored and showered with the recognition they deserve and have rightly earned. We introduced a special new award category this year: the Yellow Jacket, honoring the best of the best, which caused emotions to run high in a good way.

It should be noted that while this was a moment to celebrate, there was no tension to grasp tightly onto feelings of recognition like you might see at other award ceremonies. instead, everyone was able to enjoy and relax and celebrate all weekend long. Why? Because recognition is felt year-round, in little moments, consistently. Within our company, as an example, from awards at our annual Manager Meeting and various sales competition awards to “championship belts” for branch sales leaders and our own creation called the Cheesys (for support staff), a little recognition goes a long way!

Recognition is essential to well-being, self-esteem, confidence and preventing burnout, as well as building loyalty and an overall sense of belonging. Progression isn’t always possible in all positions or organizations, nor is it an immediate goal for every team member. However, recognition is a basic, fundamental need that matters more in that regard.

Leaders can be too quick to think about promotions or raises when they should really be thinking daily about how they have given real, true recognition — not only to the work but the value that each and every team member brings to the organization. While they should be thinking beyond the obvious categories — deliverables, sales, etc. — they should also think about things like:

  • Does the team member create a great working environment for everyone else?
  • Do they help motivate others?
  • Do they offer unique ideas or solutions, even if those ideas are not the ones used?

While an employee team member might not be the best performer on standard metrics, they might offer something else that is not measured by those business statistics. A good leader will notice this, and will give recognition, too.

We as human beings crave recognition. The way social media has dominated our lives over the past 20-plus years proves this time and time again. We all want to earn approval from others, whether in the form of likes, awards, gifts, dates, promotions or celebrity. We cannot forget how basic and fundamental this need for recognition is, and how much this drives our motivation.

Recognition in its most basic form provides a nugget of safety, reminding us we belong to a tribe. Indeed, recognition can be stronger than many other traditional motivators, as has been regularly demonstrated in sociological and psychological research. So, as managers and leaders, our job is to hand out as much recognition where it belongs — because unlike other resources, recognition is priceless. It makes us all more confident and happier when there’s more going around.
