Giant termite gets decorated for the holidays

The oversized termite that keeps watch over I-95 in Providence, R.I., is officially donned in his holiday attire.

“Nibbles Woodway” sits on the roof of Big Blue Bug Solutions. The termite now wears his traditional antlers, lights and red nose for the holidays, according to WPRI.com.

The pest control company said this year, Nibbles Woodway was lit for the first time with a little help from some special guests — two penguins from Mystic Aquarium.

Nibbles Woodway has sat atop the pest control company’s building more than 40 years, and changes in appearance for holidays and special occasions to bring attention to important charities, according to WPRI.com.

In October, the termite was dressed like the Hulk for the Rhode Island Comic Con to benefit the Rhode Island Chapter of the ALS Association. The termite was painted like the original Incredible Hulk, Lou Ferrigno. Big Blue Bug Solutions donated to the ALS Association in Ferrigno’s name during a ceremony in November the day before the convention began.

In April 2020, the oversized termite wore a face mask because of the COVID-19 pandemic and to encourage people in Rhode Island to wear a mask. His signature blinking red nose was dark last year and tucked under a mask in “silent recognition of the importance of proper mask-wearing during this pandemic,” according to Big Blue Bug Solutions.

This is the 29th year the Big Blue bug has been lit along the highway.
