Preventing termites with preconstruction treatment

Subterranean termites are a pest many homeowners must deal with, either post-treatment or with preventive measures. One of the best ways to prevent termites from attacking a home or building is by applying a preconstruction termite treatment. The good news is that many products are available for these treatments. Most of these products are for soil treatment beneath and around the structure, and they can keep termites out for many years. There are also a few products that can be used for preconstruction wood treatment that directly protect the lumber used in construction from termite attack. There are termite baiting stations that can be used as well, both as a monitor and as a bait station to eliminate the colony. Many of these treatment methods can be used in combination to provide added levels of control.

Regardless of method(s), however, termite technicians should pay close attention to key areas of treatment, such as:

  • Access points such as pipes, conduits, telephone and internet cable lines.
  • Areas with attached porches or patios around the structure.

For horizontal soil treatments, do not walk on or disturb the area after treatment. Use the proper rates and volumes for treatment. Make sure to put enough liquid to penetrate different soil types — sand vs. clay, for example. Space baits properly to ensure more hits per label directions.
