In 1982, then-Pest Control magazine reported on Dr. Joyce Brothers addressing more than 300 women at the Ladies Luncheon during the then-National Pest Control Association’s (NPCA’s) 49th annual convention in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Next month, Pest Management Professional will report on the Professional Women in Pest Management (PWIPM) Networking Breakfast, sponsored by FieldRoutes, during the National Pest Management Association’s (NPMA’s) PestWorld 2023 convention in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Dr. Brothers (1927-2013) was a psychologist who hosted and guested on numerous TV and radio shows. She wrote several books, including What Every Woman Should Know About Men and How to Get Whatever You Want Out of Life. Her celebrity status made her a must-see at the luncheon, where she urged the audience to fall in love again with their husbands.

This year’s PWIPM event, meanwhile, will name its annual Women of Excellence award winners and share successful professional development and networking strategies. The organization, which was officially founded in 1988, also will raise money during PestWorld via the 13th PWIPM 5K Fun Run/Walk, benefiting the Hawaii Food Bank. Learn more at PWIPM.org.

TV news pundit predicts economic recovery under Reaganomics

During the same 1983 convention, then-moderator of TV show “Meet the Press” Marvin Kalb was supposed to deliver the keynote address, but “was unable to attend due to a slipped disc in his lower back.” Instead, NBC-TV news correspondent Irving R. Levine (1922-2009) filled in at the NPCA’s opening ceremonies, predicting that economic recovery would occur by the end of the year. His reasoning was there were several factors to make this happen. Coverage by then-Pest Control Editor — and PMP Hall of Famer (Class of 2005) — Jerry Mix noted these factors included “President [Ronald] Reagan’s tax cut is now pumping $1 billion a week into people’s pockets,” as well as “a lower rate of inflation, a drop in interest rates, defense buildup spending, and businesses working off excess inventories.” Considered to be a pioneer in reporting on economics, Levine was well-known for wearing bow ties and slightly stressing his middle initial when saying his name at the end of each telecast.

Pictured is Levine, left, and NPCA President Jim Jamison, then-president of J-J Pest Control, Little Rock, Ark., during the opening ceremonies.
