The William Blair/PCO M&A Specialists Pest Index is a proprietary index of the monthly sales for 140 different U.S. pest control companies across 30 states. For September 2021, the total U.S. pest index increased 14.3 percent year-over-year.

This marks a slight deceleration from August 2021, which was up 15 percent year-over-year. On a sequential basis, the index decreased 2.6 percent from August 2021.

The performance in September was driven by n acceleration in the residential index, offset by a slowdown in the commercial, termite and bed bug indices, according to William Blair Equity Researcher Tim Mulrooney.

The Residential Pest Index increased 18.9 percent year-over-year and decreased 1.8 percent on a sequential basis. The Commercial Pest Index increased 12.5 percent year-over-year and decreased 2.21 percent on a sequential basis. The Wood Destroying (Termite) Index increased 6.5 percent year-over-year and decreased 6.5 percent on a sequential basis. The Bed Bug Index decreased 1.3 percent year-over-year and 7.6 percent on a sequential basis.

“As the trend to work from home proliferates, so does the need for home services,” said Dan Gordon, managing member of PCO M&A Specialists and PCO Bookkeepers and Pest Management Professional’s financial columnist. “Pest control is right smack in the middle of this demand, leading to a year-over-year increase of residential services of 18.9 percent, which is fantastic growth for the industry.”
