Basic steps in chemical treatment for ticks

Chemical treatments are an important tool in professional tick management. Precise pesticide applications can significantly reduce the number of ticks in an area, making it safer for people and pets. Here are the basic steps involved in a typical chemical treatment for tick control:

  1. Inspection. Examine known areas with tick activity in addition to tick-prone areas, such as tall grasses and shrubs, to determine your treatment site. Questing ticks will favor areas with leafy, brushy overgrowth to increase their chances of finding a host.
  2. Selection. Determine the appropriate pesticide based on the treatment area and the severity of the infestation.
  3. Preparation. Some treatment sites may need to be prepped beforehand to increase application success. This can include mowing tall grasses and removing debris that may harbor ticks.
  4. Application. Apply the pesticide, in accordance with label language, to vegetation and other tick-prone areas using a handheld or backpack sprayer. Apply evenly across the area to ensure maximum exposure.
  5. Post-application. Monitor the area for effectiveness, and repeat treatment if necessary.
